The Bangladesh Premier League 2026 continues as Chattogram Royals prepare to face Noakhali Express in Match 25 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Thursday, January 15. The Royals have been in strong form this season, winning five of their seven matches and comfortably holding the second spot on the points table. Coming off consecutive victories, they will be eager to maintain momentum and solidify their position as title contenders. Their balanced squad and consistent performances make them a tough side to beat.

Noakhali Express, in contrast, have struggled to find rhythm this season. With just two wins from eight games, they sit at the bottom of the points table and are desperate for a turnaround. Facing a confident Royals side will be a stern test for their batting and bowling units alike. The upcoming clash provides an opportunity for Noakhali to regroup and make a statement, but they will have to overcome their inconsistent form and the pressure of playing against one of the league’s most in-form teams.

<![CDATA[BPL 2026: Three teams secure playoff spots as one place remains open after the end of the Sylhet phase]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/bpl-2026-three-teams-secure-playoff-spots-as-one-place-remains-open-after-the-end-of-the-sylhet-phase/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/bpl-2026-three-teams-secure-playoff-spots-as-one-place-remains-open-after-the-end-of-the-sylhet-phase/ Tue, 13 Jan 2026 16:15:12 GMT

The Sylhet phase of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) has concluded, and the tournament now shifts to Dhaka. The Dhaka leg will begin on Thursday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, where the final six matches of the 30-game league stage will be played.

Following the end of the Sylhet phase, three teams have already secured qualification for the playoffs, leaving just one remaining spot available. Rajshahi Warriors’ victory over Dhaka Capitals on January 12 confirmed their place, along with Chattogram Royals and Sylhet Titans, as the competition heads into its final league matches.

Rajshahi Warriors currently lead the table with 12 points from eight matches after recording six wins. Chattogram Royals sit second with 10 points from seven games, while Sylhet Titans are third, also on 10 points, having completed nine matches.

Playoff race intensifies as BPL moves to Dhaka

Despite sitting fourth on the points table, former champions Rangpur Riders have yet to confirm their place in the playoffs. They have earned eight points from eight matches, with four wins and four losses, and remain in the hunt for the final spot.

Dhaka Capitals and Noakhali Express are also still mathematically in contention, although their chances are slim. Both teams have played eight matches and managed only two victories each, meaning their qualification hopes depend heavily on other results in the remaining fixtures.

The league stage will conclude with six matches on January 15, 16, and 17. The playoffs are set to begin on January 19, while the final will be played on January 23.

Chattogram Royals have emerged as one of the most balanced sides despite a quiet start to the season. Strong opening partnerships from Naim Sheikh and Adam Rossington have provided momentum, while the bowlers have maintained pressure. Mahedi Hasan, Tanvir Islam, and Shoriful Islam have delivered consistent performances, reflected in the team’s healthy net run rate.

Sylhet Titans continue to stay competitive despite playing more matches than most teams. Their form has been inconsistent at times, but a positive net run rate keeps them in a strong position ahead of the final league games.

Rangpur Riders entered the tournament with high expectations due to their experienced squad. However, inconsistency has prevented them from securing a qualification so far. The Dhaka phase will be crucial if they are to convert potential into results.

Dhaka Capitals have struggled throughout the season, winning only two matches. Mistakes at key moments have cost them dearly, and their negative net run rate highlights issues in both batting and bowling.

As the tournament shifts to Dhaka, net run rate and head-to-head results are expected to play a decisive role in determining the final playoff lineup.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has adopted a strict zero-tolerance policy during this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) to safeguard the tournament’s integrity. While the initiative aims to curb corruption, it has reportedly caused unease among some foreign players, most notably Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who is representing Dhaka Capitals.

Ahead of the tournament, around 10 players were barred from participating in the auction due to suspected involvement in past match-fixing incidents, with Anamul Haque among those named. Despite criticism and complaints from certain quarters, the BCB has remained firm in its stance, stating that these measures are essential to maintaining transparency. According to the board, the stricter monitoring has resulted in an almost 80 percent reduction in suspicious activities in recent times.

Responding to concerns, the BCB clarified that no player’s rights were compromised and emphasised that all actions were taken in accordance with ICC anti-corruption guidelines. However, the issue has continued to generate discussion, particularly after reports suggested that Gurbaz felt uncomfortable under the heightened scrutiny and even considered leaving Bangladesh midway through the tournament.

Growing Tensions in the BPL

Meanwhile, Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir, who was expected to play the full season of this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) for Sylhet Titans, has left the tournament midway and returned to Pakistan. Sylhet Titans confirmed the news in an official statement, without sharing further details.

Mithun Speaks on Gurbaz Situation

Dhaka captain Mohammad Mithun addressed the issue after his team’s defeat to Noakhali Express on January 11. He admitted that off-field matters have affected the squad and said Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been mentally disturbed. Mithun explained that Gurbaz, a player with experience across major leagues, took the situation very seriously, and his mental state has had an impact on the entire team.

Mithun added that while the team has offered emotional support, the matter ultimately depends on the player. He also confirmed that Gurbaz had considered leaving the tournament and was following instructions from his own board before the issue was later settled. A franchise owner also raised concerns, saying financial losses and ongoing off-field pressure are making it difficult to operate. Once again, the Bangladesh Premier League finds itself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.

<![CDATA[Moeen Ali explains why the BPL has lost its spark and what it needs to rise again]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/moeen-ali-explains-why-the-bpl-has-lost-its-spark-and-what-it-needs-to-rise-again/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/moeen-ali-explains-why-the-bpl-has-lost-its-spark-and-what-it-needs-to-rise-again/ Sun, 11 Jan 2026 18:59:20 GMT

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) has faced criticism in recent seasons because of fewer star players and less excitement. Many fans feel the tournament is not as enjoyable as before. During this discussion, England all-rounder Moeen Ali shared his honest opinion on why the league seems to have lost some of its charm.

While speaking to the media, Moeen talked about franchise cricket dressing rooms. He said that every team has a different environment, but the difference is usually not very big. “To be honest, every dressing room is different,” Moeen said. “Whether it’s CSK or RCB, it’s always different, but it’s always good.”

Moeen explained that in franchise cricket, players often play with the same teammates in different leagues. Because of this, the overall atmosphere stays quite similar. However, he said his time at Chennai Super Kings was very special. “CSK was special because we had a strong team and we won two trophies,” he said. “When you win trophies, the dressing room is always a happy place. So overall, there isn’t a big difference.”

BPL Losing Its Spark Due to Scheduling Issues

Moeen Ali admitted that the Bangladesh Premier League does not have the same excitement it once had. When asked about the lack of star players and lower fan interest, he said the main reason is the clash with other cricket tournaments. “Yes, honestly, I think the number one reason is that it clashes with other leagues,” Moeen said.

He explained that the BPL takes place at the same time as big tournaments like South Africa’s SA20, Australia’s Big Bash League, and different international series. At the same time, players are also preparing for major ICC events such as the World Cup. Because of this busy schedule, many top players choose other commitments, which reduces the star presence in the BPL.

Moeen feels the league needs time and changes to become strong again. He said the process would be like starting fresh. “Maybe it will take another season,” he said. “Hopefully, Inshallah, things will be better next season. But it will take some time — almost like a reset.”

Franchise Changes and Hope for the Future

Moeen also pointed out that frequent changes in team ownership and management hurt the league’s stability. “Teams keep changing, and people are not always sure who owns which franchise or who is running the team,” he said. “These things keep changing here. It needs to settle down again.”

He believes this instability makes it hard for teams to plan for the long term and build a strong identity. Still, Moeen is hopeful that things will improve within the next year if the league becomes more stable. He stressed that finding a fixed window in the cricket calendar and keeping franchises consistent are very important for the BPL’s future.

Apart from talking about the league, Moeen also praised his England teammate Ethan Brooks, who is playing with him in Sylhet. He spoke very positively about Brooks’ talent and potential. “He’s a very good cricketer,” Moeen said. “The fans here really like him, and teams rate him highly. His fielding is outstanding, and he is also a very good bowler. He hasn’t bowled much here yet, but skill-wise, he’s excellent. His batting is also very, very good.”

Moeen added that finishing matches is one of the hardest jobs in modern cricket, but Brooks has done well in that role in England over the past two years. “I’m sure he still has a lot more to show here,” Moeen said. “And he’s keen to show it.”

As teams continue to battle for playoff placement in the BPL 2026 season, the Noakhali Express will be looking to break their losing streak when they face off against the Rajshahi Warriors. The Noakhali Express still has not won a match in this tournament. They have lost all five games they played so far, including a loss to the Dhaka Capitals in their last game, where they lost by seven wickets. The Rajshahi Warriors, on the other hand, are doing very well and currently rank fourth overall after winning three of their four games so far this tournament, and their last match was an exciting Super Over win against Rangpur Riders.

This match should provide an opportunity for the Noakhali Express to try and get back into winning ways as they seek out some momentum towards the end of the tournament, while the Rajshahi Warriors will continue to push toward securing playoff placement with a minimum of three more wins in their last four games. Each team will have a different reason for wanting to win the game; for the Noakhali Express, this will be about building on the success they had in their last match against the Dhaka Capitals and trying to turn things around before the end of the tournament. For the Rajshahi Warriors, they want to continue building momentum from their last match before going into the final three weeks of competition.

Run-outs, on most occasions, are results of utter confusion in the middle between two batters, but it can be of the batters’ not being attentive of the ball as such a hilarious incident took place during the ongoing 2025/26 season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) as the captain of the Rajshahi Warriors had to leave the field in a dramatic run-out against the Rangpur Riders.

At the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet, Rajshahi batted first to post 159 runs on the board in their allotted 20 overs for the loss of eight wickets as only three of their batters made it into the double figures. Rajshahi’s Najmul Hossain Shanto guided the short ball from Nahid Rana into the backward region and went for a single.

The fielder had already thrown the ball back to Rana, who fumbled in the first process, standing at the bowler’s mark. But Shanto wasn’t aware of the entire situation and set for a double with Rana, quickly breaking the stumps and dismissing the left-handed batter on 41 runs in 30 balls at a strike rate of 136.67 with the help of five fours and one six.

Najmul Hossain Shanto dismissed for 41 via hilarious run-out

The only bigger contributor than Shanto for the Warriors in the batting department was their opener, Sahibzada Farhan, who smashed a fine knock of 65 runs in 46 balls at a strike rate of more than 140 with the help of eight boundaries and a couple of sixes as they found themselves to 159 in their allotted 20 overs.

Watch the video here:

In reply, Rangpur Riders, despite being ahead in the clash heading into the last over of the chase, leveled the same score with Dawid Malan remaining unbeaten on 63 runs in 50 balls, while Towhid Hridoy drilled 53 runs in 39 balls with the help of seven boundaries.

The game moved to the super over, where Rajshahi Warriors remained calm and completed the victory. Ripon Mondol was adjudged the player of the match for his excellent last over to take the game to the super over.

Brief Scores: Rajshahi Warriors 159/8 (Sahibzada Farhan 65, Najmul Hossain Shanto 41, Faheem Ashraf 3/43) beat Rangpur Riders 159/6 (Dawid Malan 63*, Towhid Hridoy 53, SM Meherob 2/17) in super-over.
