Tempers flared in the Hobart Hurricanes dugout during Friday’s Big Bash League Challenger against the Sydney Sixers, as a heated verbal exchange between Australian internationals caught widespread attention. The incident occurred during a high-pressure knockout clash, when the Hurricanes were trying to control the run flow in the Sixers’ innings. Cameras captured the tense moment, which quickly went viral on social media, showing Test all-rounder Beau Webster visibly frustrated with a fielding decision. The incident highlighted the intensity and pressure of BBL knockout cricket.

Webster directed his frustration toward veteran wicketkeeper Matthew Wade after conceding a boundary off his over. The bowler questioned the positioning of Mitch Owen, who was stationed inside the circle at cover, believing that the field had not been adjusted properly in time. Wade and Owen tried to explain the situation, but Webster’s irritation was apparent, reflecting the high stakes of the match. The clash provided fans with an unfiltered glimpse into the competitive spirit and pressure moments that come with BBL knockout encounters.

“Did you tell him to go?” Webster was heard asking Wade, clearly irritated by the miscommunication.

“I saw you tell him to go. I didn’t tell him to stay in,” Wade replied, attempting to defuse the situation.

Sydney Sixers Dominate to Seal BBL Final Spot

The hasty back-and-forth between the teams portrays the enormous pressure of 'knockout' cricket, where the final place is at stake. In what was an extremely intense few seconds, the Hobart Hurricanes' side was shown to have a brief period of stress, as they were trying to remain in the tournament. However, their hopes were short-lived, due to the Sydney Sixers' commanding and consistent performance throughout the match. Steve Smith set the tone for the Sixers with a steady, composed half-century, while the batting echelons of Moises Henriques, Joel Davies, Lachlan Shaw and Jack Edwards, all helped build total to a daunting score of 199.

Pursuing 200 runs, the Hobart Hurricanes found it very difficult to generate any momentum against the Sixers' highly disciplined bowling unit, as they were limited in the ability to find boundaries, while at the same time faced constant pressure. Veteran left-arm fast-bowler Ben Dwarshius was the star for the Sixers, taking three important wickets to dismantle the Hurricanes' run chase. The outcome was clear as the Sixers claimed the win by a remarkable margin of 57 runs and progressed to yet another BBL final. The Sixers will now face off against the Perth Scorchers for the sixth time in BBL history, strengthening an elite knockout rivalry. Although the dugout confrontation had no impact on the overall results, it did add yet another unexpected element of intensity to what was already a fascinating match.

Pakistan’s Zaman Khan came into the 2025/26 season of the Big Bash League (BBL) for the Brisbane Heat as a replacement bowler and made a massive impact in their vital fixture against Hobart Hurricanes at the Bellerive Oval. He was given the job of defending just six runs in the last over.

The first delivery was a low full-toss on the middle and leg of Nathan Ellis, who pushed the delivery back to the bowler for a dot. The Hobart captain opened the face of the bat and glided the second delivery to the third man region for a single. The equation came down to five runs required in three deliveries as Zaman Khan made some feel adjustments.

The third delivery was full outside off as Nikhil Chaudhary got forward and thrashed it straight to the fielder at cover region. On the fourth delivery, the right-handed batter shuffled across and got low from his batting stance to swing his willow at the yorker, and still couldn’t get a run off the delivery.

The fifth delivery was again full outside of the slot as Nikhil got forward to Loft and lost his bottom to pick out the wide long-on fielder, Michael Neser. The pressure is on both the batter and the bowler with 4 runs required for a super over in one delivery.

The field was set for a wide line yorker as Zaman went for a full when wide outside of delivery to which Rishad Hussain reached for it to drive and picked out the sweeper cover for just one as the throw came from Jimmy Pierson with all the fielders started celebration, rushing up to the bowler, who did his Sajda.

“They probably were in the box seat. Yeah, what was it? Was it 7 off 6? So that's an amazing over. And I'm sort of lost for words. Even Xavier's over before was incredible, taking a few wickets. Such a good game of cricket. The player of the match, Matthew Kuhneann, expressed in the post-match presentation.

Brief Scores: Brisbane Heat 160/8 (Nathan McSweeney 49, Matt Renshaw 37, Riley Meredith 3/40) beat Hobart Hurricanes 157/8 (Ben McDermott 59, Xavier Bartlett 3/44) by 3 runs.

The 29th match in the 2025-26 Big Bash League is a match-up between the Brisbane Heat and the Sydney Thunder on January 10, 2026 at the Gabba in Brisbane. The two teams have already played each other once before, with the Thunder winning that match, which was their only win so far this season. This is an important match for both teams as they are heading into a critical part of the tournament.

Brisbane has had a somewhat inconsistent season thus far, recording three victories and four losses through its first seven matches, and Nathan McSweeney leads the team. They still have a chance to qualify for the playoffs, so they need to perform well in order to solidify their playoff chances. On the flip side, the Thunder have been having an extremely rough season, winning only one game while sitting at the bottom of the table with a poor net run rate. Because they have been eliminated from playoff contention, David Warner's team is looking to finish the season on a positive note.

In his second BBL match, the batter displayed his amazing hitting skills by smashing three sixes and a boundary in a row.

According to the information published in Cricket.com.au, "Hailing from an Indian background, with his parents still living in Mumbai, Jerssis Wadia's story has been one of persistence. Part of the Adelaide Strikers U19s program before Covid struck, he returned to Adelaide once borders reopened and has been biding his time on the South Australian Premier Cricket circuit since the 2022/23 summer, where he has played for Adelaide, East Torrens, and Tea Tree Gully."

The left-handed batter joined the Adelaide Strikers for the BBL 2025-26 season as the replacement for star keeper-batter Alex Carey. He joined the team as a local talent. The batter scored only 7 runs when he made his Big Bash League debut against the Melbourne Stars. In the second game, which was against Brisbane Heat, the 24-year-old showed his true colors.

The left-arm pacer of the Pakistan side, Shaheen Shah Afridi, was expected to be a massive success for the Brisbane Heat in the ongoing season of the Big Bash League 2025-26. But the veteran did not turn up in the first couple of games as he was whacked around the park by the power-hitting batters in the last couple of games in Geelong and Brisbane.

The third game for the Brisbane Heat against the Sydney Thunder at the Manuka Oval in Canberra was another chance for Afridi to show his skills with the ball inside the power play or in the death overs. And he showed it during the clash with the old ball in the death overs.

It was the last ball of Afridi’s four-over spell against Thunder and the last ball of the penultimate over of the first innings. He went for a two, crashing your card as it swung back in sharply to Mattew Gilkes, who was batting in rhythm on 76 runs in 48 deliveries with the help of four boundaries and three sixes.

Shaheen Afridi’s wild appeal in BBL 2025/26 goes viral

The umpire did not raise his finger as Afridi madly appealed before sitting on his hunches and showing the T sign to his captain to ask for the review. The reviews confirm that a ball would have been gone on to smash the leg stump of the left-handed batter.

Watch the video here:

Thunder finished with 193 runs on the board in the allotted 20 overs, with both openers, Sam Konstas and Gilkes, celebrating their respective half-centuries at a strike rate of over 140, thanks to the opening partnership of 127 runs in 13.2 overs. Afridi finished with 1/35 in his four overs at an economy rate of just under nine.

Brisbane could not repeat the same heroics with the bat a couple of nights ago. The highest individual score of the chase came from Matt Renshaw, who smashed 43 runs in 28 deliveries, but that was not enough to make it a successful chase as the home side registered their first victory of the tournament by 34 runs.

Brisbane Heat set a new BBL record after successfully chasing the 258-run target against Perth Scorchers with the help of two centuries.

After the hosts Brisbane Heat chose to field first at Brisbane on Friday (December 19), Perth Scorchers scored 257/6 in 20 overs. In reply, Brisbane Heat chased down the target in 19.5 overs after losing two wickets. While Scorchers recorded the second-highest BBL total at that time, Heat not only broke that record but also set a new record for the highest BBL chase.

Finn Allen and Copper Connolly powered Perth Scorchers innings

In the first innings, opener Finn Allen and Copper Connolly had a 142-run partnership for the second wicket. While Finn scored 79 off 38 balls with three fours and eight sixes, Copper scored 77 off 37 balls with six fours and six sixes. At the late, Aaron Hardie (23 off 12 balls), captain Ashton Turner (12 off five balls), Laurie Evans (16 not out off nine balls), and Nick Hobson (26 off 11 balls) had some useful cameos.

Among the Heat bowlers, only Xavier Bartlett got multiple wickets (2/44), while all other bowlers got one wicket each.

While Hugh Weibgen joined at the non-striker end at Heat needed two runs in the last two balls, Wildermuth finished the game successfully with two runs on the fifth ball of the final over, as Heat created history by winning the match by eight wickets with one ball left.

It was the third-highest successful chase in T20 cricket history. Meanwhile, the fixture experienced 36 sixes in total, which set a new record for most sixes in a BBL match, as it was well ahead of the previous record with 26 sixes in two BBL games.

There was a lot of expectation from Shaheen Shah Afridi, the left-arm pacer of the Pakistan, heading into the 2025/26 season of the Big Bash League (BBL) for the Brisbane Heat. The franchise hired his services to see the veteran picking wickets inside the powerplay with the new ball and continue the same dominance with the old ball during the death overs.

Afridi had a decent start after being smashed for 15 runs in his second over against the Melbourne Renegades at the Simonds Stadium in Geelong. The star left arm pacer came to bowl his third over on the 18th over of the first innings, as the very first ball was a full toss on the stumps, as Oliver Peake whacked it across the line over the square leg for a six.

The third ball of the over was over the shoulder height of Tim Seifert, who celebrated his century. However, the fourth ball of the over was another no-ball, as there were three fielders stationed inside the ring. It was slapped on the deep point region.

The fifth ball was another no-ball as it was the second full toss of the over, and the batter Peake couldn’t do anything on it, and the wicket-keeper fumbled to concede a couple of byes. The umpire had a couple of words with the captain, Nathan McSweeney, and decided to take the bowler out of attack. Afridi ended with figures of 0/43 in 2.4 overs.

For the Renegades, Seifert nailed 102 runs in 56 balls at a strike rate of 182 with the help of nine boundaries and six sixes, while their number five batter, Oliver Peake, smashed 57 runs in 29 balls at a strike rate of 196.55, smashing six boundaries and three sixes.

Melbourne had a decent start to the chase as they found themselves 96/3 in 11 overs. Colin Munro remained undefeated on 54 runs in 26 balls at a strike rate of 186 with the help of three boundaries and five sixes. Their top order of Jack Wildermuth and McSweeney returned with low scores.

Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi is all set to play for Brisbane Heat in the upcoming Big Bash League season (BBL 2025-26). Ahead of the stint with the Aussie franchise, Afridi faced multiple questions related to star Australia pacer Mitchell Starc.

In the ongoing Ashes 2025-26, when Australia and England were engaged in a pink ball Test, Starc created history. As a left-arm pacer, he became the most successful pacer of Test cricket, surpassing Pakistan legend Wasim Akram. Despite the historic feat, Starc said that Akram still is the best.

While speaking with Kayo Sports, Afridi claimed that they had conversations when Pakistan faced Australia in the past. According to him, Starc is a legend as well as a role model for young cricketers.

Shaheen Afridi reveals how Mitchell Starc helped him to improve his bowling

"Whenever we played against Australia, we had a very good chat. He is a legend, and last time when we met, I told him that I watched your 2015 World Cup bowling spell. He is a world-class bowler. He is a role model for any youngster. He still bowls in the 140+ range; he recently crossed Wasim Akram's record. He has been the best for Australia for many years," Afridi said.

After that, the pacer said how the experienced Aussie seamer influenced him in the past. Influenced by Starc, Afridi started to bowl fuller against the batters.

"When Mitchell Starc played that 2015 World Cup, I played Under-16 cricket for Pakistan. I follow him and try to bowl like him many times," he further added.

India’s middle-order batter, Jemimah Rodrigues, will not return to Australia for the rest of the 2025 season of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). Her franchise, Brisbane Heat, has agreed to the request and gave her permission to stay back in India in the tough times of her national team-mate, Smriti Mandhana, whose wedding has been postponed due to various reasons.

Rodrigues had returned home after playing three games for the Heat, the last of which was against the Hobart Hurricanes on November 15, as part of their pre-arranged commitment. She was set to be part of Indian opening batter, Smriti Mandhana’s wedding last weekend. But the event was delayed at the last minute because of her father’s health issue on the wedding day.

“It has obviously been a challenging time for Jemi, so while it is unfortunate that she will take no further part in the WBBL, we were more than willing to agree to her request to remain in India. The Heat club obviously wishes her and Smriti Mandhana's family all the best for the future. The Brisbane Heat dropped the official statement.

Rodrigues, who scored only 37 runs in three outings for the Heat at an average of 12.33 and a strike rate of 102.77, helped India qualify for the final of the recently concluded Women’s World Cup 2025 against Australia, where the 25-year-old contributed with a famous unbeaten half-century to clinch the game.

“Jemi told us she was disappointed not to be coming back and has passed on her appreciation to the club and the Heat fans for being so understanding of the circumstances. She has been in touch with the players and wishes them all the best for the rest of their games.Heat addressed in the statement.

Heat will be bolstered with the comeback of all-rounder Grace Harris for the match against the Sydney Sixers on November 28. She will replace seamers Lily Bassingthwaighte after she missed the last game as part of her workload management plan. The Heat continues to search for its first win, having lost all six of its games so far.
