Jasprit Bumrah is a world-class bowler with a myriad of tricks up his sleeve. When times are hard and the captain throws the ball to him, Bumrah often rises up to the occasion to take the attack to the opposition. A mere mention of his name is enough to make the batters tremble in fear across all formats. But Bumrah, just like all of us, is no godly creature. Being a mortal being, he is also entitled to make mistakes, and there are often times when he misses his mark in pivotal moments.

In this article, we shed light on the top five moments when Bumrah his no-ball turned out to be a costly miss for his side.

Fakhar Zaman (Champions Trophy 2017, Final)

This is probably the costliest no-ball Bumrah has ever bowled in his international career. Facing up to Pakistan in an all-important Champions Trophy Final, India couldn't have afforded a defeat against their arch-rivals. But Bumrah gave Fakhar Zaman a huge let-off early on in the innings, which probably decided the game in Pakistan's favor. Bumrah had Zaman caught behind when Pakistan's score read 17-0. The entire team started celebrating, and Zaman was already on his way back. But soon enough, it all came crashing down once it was later revealed in a no-ball check that Bumrah had overstepped by some distance while delivering the ball. Zaman was called back, and he went on a rampage, smashing 114 (106). As a result of this swashbuckling onslaught from the Zaman, Pakistan were able to score big and dismantle India cheaply in the second innings, winning the game by 180 runs.

Nathan Lyon (Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series, Fourth Test)

This will probably not go down as the costliest miss, but it will remind the fans how India struggled to dismiss the last wicket Aussie stand. In the fourth Test of the BGT 2024-25 Series, India had Australia reeling at 91-7. After a bit of resistance from the lower order, India needed one wicket to wrap up the tail. But much to their frustration, Lyon and Bolan made India toil hard. Even with Bumrah at the helm, India struggled to break the last wicket stand. During the last over of the day, Bumrah had Lyon caught at gully, where Rahul pouched the catch safely. The Indians seemed relieved at that point, knowing that the agony had just come to an end. As they began walking off the field, the late signal of a no-ball was issued by the on-field umpire, thus denying him a wicket. The two Aussie tailenders returned the next day and added a total of 63 runs for the last wicket to give India a hefty target of 340, which at the end turned out to be way beyond their reach.

Harry Brook (Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, First Test)

In the ongoing Headingly Test, India had the opportunity to put a tight squeeze on England and achieve a sizeable first-innings lead. But that opportunity went begging as Bumrah once again got too tight on the popping crease. Bumrah bowled an exceptional short-pitched delivery to surprise Harry Brook. Given the English batter's natural instinct, Brook tried to take a swipe at it but instead got a genuine top edge. He never had any timing on that, and the catch was comfortably taken by the fielder near mid-on. At the time, Brook was batting on a duck, and much to his delight, Brook was called back as Bumrah's front foot went over the line by some distance. From that point onwards, Brook never looked back and scored at an alarming rate to punish the Indian bowlers. He survived further close calls along the way, but his luck ran out when he was caught at deep fine leg on 99. By that time, England managed to wipe out a major chunk of the deficit thanks to Brook's electrifying onslaught. In the end, India could only secure a narrow lead of six runs, but the case would have been a lot different had Bumrah not bowled a no-ball earlier.

Upul Tharanga (Home ODI series 2017, First ODI)

It was the first ODI of the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. India were skittled cheaply in front of their home crowd for 117 on a juicy wicket. With such a low total to defend, wickets were the need of the hour for India if they had to make a game out of it. They had their moment when Bumrah dismissed Tharanga off a catch. But the no‑ball negated it, and Tharanga got off the hook. It was also a time Sri Lanka found themselves in a tricky situation, and that wicket could have possibly changed the complexion of the game. However, much to the despair of the home side, Tharana took full advantage of the reprieve and made India pay. In that run chase, Tharanga went on to score 49 and stayed unbeaten to steer Sri Lanka to a comfortable win.

Ollie Pope and Alex Lees (Pataudi Trophy 2021-2022, Fifth Test)

This match marked a rare instance when Bumrah committed a double no-ball blunder. In the fifth test, India needed a draw to win the series and had England with their backs against the wall. Bumrah dismissed two batters in the same match after bowling no‑balls—first Lees, then Pope. He famously laughed after the wicket, acknowledging the irony. Although the two batters did not go on to make a significant contribution in that Test, Lees still managed to chip in with a healthy 56 in the fourth innings to give England a reasonable platform to chase down a mammoth 378 and level the series 2-2.

ENG vs IND: Ravi Shastri Gets Real About Bumrah Being Left Alone on Day 2

Day 2 of the Test match between England and India had one hero for India is Jasprit Bumrah. The pace spearhead was once again at his best, picking up three wickets and constantly troubling the English batters. But while Bumrah delivered with fire and focus, what caught everyone's attention was how alone he looked out there. Former coach Ravi Shastri noticed it too, and he didn’t hold back.

Shastri, who knows Bumrah well from his time as India’s head coach, was full of praise for the fast bowler. But his praise quickly turned into concern.
Bumrah finished with impressive figures, but none of the other bowlers offered any real support. England’s batters found it much easier to handle the rest of the attack, and the pressure Bumrah built seemed to disappear from the other end.

That’s what prompted Shastri to speak out during commentary. He said watching Bumrah fight alone reminded him how important it is to have a bowling unit, not just a star player. If India continues to lean so heavily on Bumrah, it could hurt them, not just in this match, but throughout the series.
And that’s exactly what Shastri is worried about.

"There's a big difference in levels. The concern is Bumrah and what his workload will be as the series progresses, because he is the one man who is expected to pick wickets every spell he bowls," Shastri said. "I just hope someone at the other end puts their hands up."

"I Just Hope Someone Steps Up"
Shastri’s words were simple but powerful: “I just hope someone at the other end puts their hand up.” It wasn’t a criticism just for the sake to wake-up call.
Bumrah can’t do it all by himself, and India can’t afford to overuse him, especially with more matches still to come.

He also stressed that bowlers need to work in partnerships. When Bumrah builds pressure, someone else needs to strike. That’s how successful Test teams operate. Otherwise, all that brilliant bowling from Bumrah goes to waste. Shastri’s message is clear: it’s time for the rest of the attack to rise to the occasion.

ENG vs IND: Ben Duckett Opens Up About Facing Jasprit Bumrah

In the latest Test match between England and India, one moment really stood out: Jasprit Bumrah charging in with fire and focus, making life tough for the English batters. After the match, England opener Ben Duckett didn’t hold back in praising him. Speaking honestly, he described what it really feels like to face someone as sharp and unpredictable as Bumrah.

Duckett called him the best fast bowler in the world right now, and it wasn’t just a casual compliment. He explained how Bumrah mixes up his deliveries so well that batters hardly get a chance to settle.
Whether it's a yorker, a bouncer, or a swinging delivery, you never know what's coming next. Duckett admitted that every ball from Bumrah feels like a new problem to solve.

One moment that stuck with him was a brutal over where Bumrah was at his absolute best.
Duckett described it as “a hell of an over,” saying it pushed him to stay focused just to survive. It was one of those spells where you’re not even thinking about scoring — just getting through it feels like a win. That’s the kind of impact Bumrah has.

Bumrah Is a Mind Game Too

Duckett also talked about the mental side of things. He said when you're facing someone like Bumrah, it’s not just about your technique — your mindset matters just as much. You can’t switch off, not even for a split second, because a small mistake can lead to your wicket.

Bumrah has you hanging on the edge of your seat all the time. It is his body language, his smooth run-up, and then the blast of speed — it all combines for unrelenting pressure. Duckett’s honest words go to show the high regard that international players have for Bumrah, and why he’s an indispensable part of India’s bowling lineup.

<![CDATA[HUGE! India claim an embarrassing record in the Headingly Test]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/huge-india-claim-an-embarrassing-record-in-the-headingly-test/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/huge-india-claim-an-embarrassing-record-in-the-headingly-test/ Sun, 22 Jun 2025 09:18:17 GMT

During the ongoing first Test at Headingly, India has bagged an unwanted record in the history of Test cricket. As embarrassing as it may sound, India's 471 in the first innings has gone into the record books for being the lowest score ever achieved by a team after recording three centuries. By doing so, India has now eclipsed South Africa's total of 475, which they achieved at Centurion in 2016.

So how did India experience such a shocker?

India started their innings on day one on a confident note. They made the English bowler work tirelessly hard and ended day one with an imposing score of 368/3. Gill starred in his captaincy debut for India and made an immediate impact with the bat, plundering 147 of 227. Jaiswal continued his sublime form against England in the whites, scoring 101 off 159. Pant was the third centurion for India, who dominated the English bowlers to amass 134 off 178.

Despite a dominant finish on day one, India's batting faltered immensely on day two, and the English bowlers used the overhead conditions wisely to their advantage to trigger a batting collapse. As soon as Gill was dismissed by Bashir, the wheels started coming off. Wickets tumbled at an alarming rate, and as a result, India saw themselves seven down at the stroke of lunch.

There was no respite after the lunch interval as the carnage continued from the English bowlers. India lost a shocking seven wickets for the last 41 runs and failed to surpass even the 500-run mark, which many analysts at the time believed would have been a walk in the park for the visitors.

Despite being bundled out for 471, India did well to exceed the average first innings score at Headingly, which is generally around 300. The visitors seemed to have the advantage by their side when Jasprit Bumrah managed to send Crawley packing inside the first over. However, a dominant 122-run stand between Duckett and Pope put England back in control. With seven wickets in the bank, England have wiped out the major chunk of the deficit before the call of stumps on day two as they now trail by only 262 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah has shared that he turned down the chance to become India’s Test captain because of fitness and workload concerns. Even though he was vice-captain and one of the top choices to take over after Rohit Sharma stepped down in May, Bumrah said it wouldn’t be right to lead the team if he couldn’t play all five matches in the upcoming Test series against England, which begins on June 20 in Leeds.

“I Can’t Play All Tests”: Jasprit Bumrah Shares Why He Said No to Captaincy

Speaking to Sky Sports, Bumrah said, “During the IPL, I had a chat with the BCCI. I spoke to my doctors and physios about the five-match Test series. We all agreed it’s better to be careful. So, I told BCCI not to consider me for the captain’s role because I may not be able to play every Test.”

Bumrah added that he didn’t want to start the series as captain and then miss games in between, as it wouldn’t be fair to the team. “I wanted to do what’s best for the team,” he said. After his decision, the BCCI named Shubman Gill as India’s new Test captain. This will be Gill’s first time leading the team in a Test series.

<![CDATA[Top 5 talking points from BCCI’s New Annual contract list]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/top-5-talking-points-from-bcci-s-new-contract/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/top-5-talking-points-from-bcci-s-new-contract/ Mon, 21 Apr 2025 18:59:00 GMT

The BCCI has officially released the central contracts for the 2024–25 season, effective from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025. These contracts are categorized into four distinct grades—A+, A, B, and C—based on a player’s consistency, performance, and overall value to the team across formats. This classification system helps identify top-tier talent and recognizes the importance of players in shaping India’s cricketing future.

Among the most significant highlights of the announcement are the shifts in player placements across the contract grades. Promotions, omissions, and surprising inclusions have sparked widespread discussions among fans and analysts. The list not only reflects current form but also hints at the selectors’ long-term vision. These changes are expected to influence team dynamics and individual player motivation moving forward into a crucial year of Indian cricket.

1. Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan Return to Central Contracts

Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan are back on the BCCI’s central contracts after missing out last year because of a lack of commitment to domestic cricket, instead having chosen to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Iyer, who is the leading run-scorer in India's Champions Trophy-winning run, has been handed a Grade B contract with ₹ 3 crore in annual retainers. With the likes of Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik firmly setting themselves up as India's wicket-keepers, Kishan has been handed a Grade C contract worth ₹ 1 crore, quite rightly, in this author's opinion. Both players will now be pleased to have been rewarded in the BCCI's contracts, and again, as demonstrated by Iyer's example, will surely be further incentivized to better balance the potential commitments of the IPL vs. IPL.

2. Rishabh Pant Promoted to Grade A

Due to Rishabh Pant’s continued success in all three formats of the game, he upgraded from a Grade B Contract to a Grade A Contract worth ₹ 5 crore in annual retainers. He now sits in category A with the likes of Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj. Pant’s aggressive batting and sharp glovework, especially after his remarkable recovery from a life-threatening car accident in 2022, have solidified his position as a key asset for India.

3. Elite Players Remain in Grade A+

The upper echelon remains the same, Grade A+, as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja are all still in Grade A+ at ₹7 crore a year. Bumrah is the only player in this group that plays all three formats, as Sharma, Kohli, and Jadeja are on a retirement spree following India's T20 World Cup victory in 2024. But the fact that they are retained highlights their undeniable role in Indian cricket.

4. Introduction of New Faces in Grade C

The BCCI has included a few young talents in the central contracts, which included Dhruv Jurel, Varun Chakaravarthy, Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Abhishek Sharma. All of these players have impressed in their domestic circuits and the IPL, so each of them has a central contract at Grade C (₹1 crore). I view this as an important step forward for the BCCI, for all of these players have obtained their first contracts with the national board, and it shows India is investing in its players as it seeks to fill the talent pool with a healthy crop of players for the future.

5. Discontinuation of Fast-Bowling Contracts and Questions on A+ Relevance:

The BCCI has withdrawn its fast bowling contracts (not just Bumrah, but Akash Deep and Umran Malik, etc.), and Akash Deep is the only player in Grade C. There should be some concern over the depth of India's fast bowling stocks. Also, there is a discussion on the relevance of the A+ itself, with three of the four (Rohit, Kohli, Jadeja) no longer playing T20I's.

These talking points highlight the BCCI’s balance between rewarding established stars, reintegrating disciplined players, and investing in emerging talent while addressing structural questions about contract categories.

As “Super Over” trends on social media once again, cricket fans are taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane, recalling Jasprit Bumrah’s legendary Super Over performance in the 2017 IPL match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Lions (GL). The high-pressure encounter, held on April 29, 2017, at Rajkot, ended in a tie after both teams finished their 20 overs with 153 runs, leading to one of the most thrilling finishes in IPL history.

Mumbai Indians batted first in the Super Over, scoring 11 runs. Defending just 12 runs against two of the most explosive batters in the world — Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch — Bumrah showed nerves of steel. Despite starting the over with a wide and a no-ball, the MI pacer bounced back with precision yorkers and deceptive slower balls that left the Gujarat batsmen stunned.

In what became a defining moment of his T20 career, Bumrah conceded just six runs in that Super Over, sealing victory for Mumbai Indians. His calm demeanor and skill execution under extreme pressure were lauded by fans and cricket experts alike.

A Moment That Defined Bumrah’s Death Bowling Legacy

This performance not only underlined Bumrah's brilliance in death overs but also established him as one of the finest T20 bowlers of his generation. Fans continue to relive this iconic over, especially as similar nail-biting finishes trend in current IPL discussions. Even years later, Bumrah’s Super Over heroics remain etched in IPL folklore, a testament to his composure and mastery under pressure.
