Punjab Kings (PBKS) secured a four-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in an exhilarating IPL 2025 Match 49 on April 30, 2025, at MA Chidambaram Stadium. After CSK posted a total of 190, PBKS managed to knock together 192 with two balls to spare - and did so under serious bowling pressure from CSK. Let’s take a look at the reasons CSK lost this match.

The over-the-top total for one reason was that CSK could not defend 190 because of poor bowling and inability to take a wicket. In particular, Shreyas Iyer (72) and Prabhsimran Singh (54) were a little too good for the CSK bowling attack of Matheesha Pathirana (2/45) and Khaleel Ahmed (2/28)—even after Sam Curran scored 88 off only 47 to give CSK a good platform. The CSK bowlers were either too consistent with their bowling or swung too wide in a manner not conducive to defending the target, despite impressive contributions by Pathirana and Ahmed. Under pressure from aggressive powerplay and middle-overs play from Iyer and Singh, CSK looked incapable of responding in their mode.

This was clearly a very interesting contest. There were some quick runs from Shashank Singh (23 off 12) in an effort to fire the team home in the end, but the real responsibility lay with CSK's death bowling led by Ravindra Jadeja (1/32) and Pathirana.

1. Inadequate Death Bowling

First of all, CSK put up a competitive score of 190 runs but could not defend it in the death overs! Punjab chased it down with 2 balls to spare following a brutal finish from Shashank Singh after steady contributions throughout the innings, despite Matheesha Pathirana and Khaleel Ahmed being expensive and conceding a combined 73 runs in 7.4 overs, which hurt CSK's chances in the death.

2. Lack of bowling support for Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja bowled economically and got a wicket for 32 runs in 3 overs, but the remaining CSK bowlers did not have the penetration or control required. Yes, Jadeja did his job, but when the other bowlers cannot assert control, apply pressure, or take crucial wickets to break up partnerships, then the required run rate can remain manageable.

3. Over-reliance on Sam Curran

Sam Curran played an incredible innings of 88 runs off 47 balls; however, he got little to no support from the remaining batsmen. Dewald Brevis and Jadeja produced only insignificant contributions, and there were no strong partnerships down through the middle order, which left CSK just short of a formidable total of 200 runs that they might have been able to defend given the conditions.

In Match 49 of IPL 2025, Punjab Kings (PBKS) managed to beat riding-high Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 4 wickets in a gripping contest, chasing down a target of 191 in 19.4 overs, finishing at 194/6. CSK made a daring 190/6 in 19.2 overs, which was a challenging run chase that left gleeful, luckless fans on a rollercoaster ride!

Chennai Super Kings Innings

CSK started positively while batting first in their innings despite losing Yuzvendra Chahal (4 off 32 balls), Arshdeep Singh (2 off 25 balls), and Marco Jansen (2 off 30 balls) early, but watch as Sam Curran changes the tide of the match with a sensational 88 off 47 balls Anchored the innings with a blend of aggression and calmness, Dewald Brevis scoring 32 off 26 and Ravindra Jadeja 17 off 12 gave easy runs in late overs. PBKS's bowlers, with Khaleel Ahmed (3/4) and Matheesha Pathirana (4/5), took wickets at regular intervals to ensure that CSK wouldn't run away. CSK finished up at 190/6 in 19.2 overs, which was a decently competitive target and a chaseable score on a convincing batting track.

Punjab Kings Innings

PBKS began their chase positively with openers Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh putting runs on the board early. Iyer led from the front with a match-defining 72 off 41 balls, his class showing with solid pathing off the right shots. Prabhsimran played a complimentary role, scoring a well-made 54 off 36 balls, which kept the required rate on par throughout the innings. Shashank Singh's late blitz of 23 off 12 balls gave the impetus needed to hurry up the chase. CSK’s bowlers fought back in that phase of the innings, led by Yuzvendra Chahal (4/32) and Arshdeep Singh (3/2), taking a total of 6 wickets. It is to say that it wasn’t enough to stop PBKS. Contributions from Khaleel Ahmed (2 off 28), Matheesha Pathirana (2 off 45), and Ravindra Jadeja (1 off 32) were minimal, and PBKS sealed the chase in 19.4 overs, finishing at 194/6.

CSK vs PBKS: Post Match Reactions

Prabhsimran Singh (PBKS): Talked about the opening partnership with Arya; they started at camps in pre-season and said all the timing and the trust were with Shreyas Iyer (72 off 41) in the chase. Said he was pleased to contribute with 54 off 36 for the win; gave a lot of credit to the coach, Ricky Ponting, for building a supportive environment where the captain and the coach lift players up (after poor performances). Said the team wanted to focus on making the playoffs, which is not something PBKS has accomplished for a while. clapping and cheering for as much as possible.

MS Dhoni (CSK Captain): Dhoni said 190/6 was 15 runs short, despite the Curran's 88 off 47 and Brevis's 32 off 26, and said Brevis was full of energy. Dhoni said the catching needs to be better and that they lost 4 wickets in the 19th over, leaving 7 balls left on the best home wicket of IPL 2025, and was frustrated to get that wrong.

Shreyas Iyer (PBKS captain and Player of the match): Iyer said that he always enjoys chasing big totals, plays with instinct, and backs himself. He stated that due to net practices with fast bowlers, he was very confident. Although it was humid and it was a tough fielding condition, Iyer was tactical as captain in leading the required over-rate. He said coach Ricky Ponting pushed the players to be aggressive early against good bowlers. Iyer, together with Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, played the innings smart and aggressively, which got PBKS over the line and kept Punjab winning.

In what could be a defining moment for Chennai Super Kings fans, MS Dhoni dropped a surprising statement during the toss ahead of CSK’s match against Punjab Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Speaking with Danny Morrison, Dhoni left fans emotional by joking, "I don't know if I'm coming for the next game (laughs)." His light-hearted comment quickly sparked massive speculation about his retirement from the IPL.

While Dhoni laughed it off, the hint was enough to send the cricket world into a frenzy. Fans present at Chepauk and millions watching from home couldn’t help but wonder, Is this the end of an era?

Dhoni’s Stunning Comment at Toss

When Danny Morrison cheekily asked if fans could expect Dhoni back next year, the CSK captain replied with his signature smile, “Currently, I don’t know if I’m playing the next game or not (laughs).”

Dhoni elaborated on CSK’s season struggles, emphasizing the importance of home advantage, pride in performance, and the challenges of team consistency after a fresh auction:

“Home advantage is very important, which we haven’t been able to capitalise on. We’ve been on the side where we don’t make many changes. But this season, it hasn’t worked for us. If most players are doing well, you chop and change just 1-2 players. But this year, we’ve had to make more changes.”

Last year, Dhoni had openly expressed his wish to play his final IPL match at Chepauk in front of his beloved home crowd. CSK’s final home game this season is against Rajasthan Royals on May 12, and fans are now wondering if that will be Dhoni’s grand farewell.

Although Dhoni has not officially announced his retirement, today’s remarks only fuelled the emotional anticipation. After leading CSK with unmatched pride and passion for so many years, could we be just days away from witnessing the end of an unforgettable chapter?

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will encounter  Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the 49th match of IPL 2025 at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium - actually known as Chepauk - on April 30, 2025, at 7:30 PM IST. MS Dhoni will be taking over captain responsibilities due to Ruturaj Gaikwad's injury, while Shreyas Iyer will be in charge of PBKS. Both teams see this match as crucial in terms of playoff qualification.

Head-to-Head Record

CSK and PBKS have clashed 31 times in the IPL since PBKS’s inception as Kings XI Punjab in 2008.

  • CSK Wins: 16
  • PBKS Wins: 15
  • No Result: 0
  • Win Percentage: CSK holds a narrow edge with a 51.61% win rate.
  • At Chepauk, CSK leads with a 7-2 record against PBKS in 9 matches at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.

While this is a fierce rivalry, PBKS has made strides in closing the gap over the last few seasons. In fact, they have won the last five of the last six matches, including their most recent match in IPL 2025 in Match 22, when they won by 18 runs. CSK prefers spin-heavy bowling and well-balanced batting on the slow pitch at Chepauk, as it lends itself well to telling stories to the opposition batsmen. PBKS relies on aggressive batting, which has been the Achilles' heel of CSK in the past and has tested their more traditional bowling approach.

Weather & Pitch Report

On April 30, 2025, the weather in Chennai will be hot and humid, with the temperature varying from 35–40°C (95–104°F) and humidity between 70–80% in the evening. The M.A. Chidambaram Stadium would tend to be dry, and the conditions would favor spinners later in the match. The pitch would slow down with time, and batting becomes tough later in the day, particularly in the second innings. Dew could also come into play during the second innings, which might help the chasing side by making batting conditions better.

CSK vs PBKS: Match Preview

Chennai Super Kings, led by MS Dhoni, hope to bank upon their solid home record at Chepauk despite a poor IPL 2025 season. CSK has not been consistent, with only two wins from nine games, and is returning after a four-match losing streak, including an 18-run loss to PBKS in Match 22. Their batting depends on old hands Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, and Shivam Dube, with depth coming from all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. CSK's spin-prone bowling setup comprising Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Noor Ahmad is apt to suit Chepauk's conditions, while pacers Matheesha Pathirana and Khaleel Ahmed aim to exploit early movement.

Punjab Kings, under Shreyas Iyer, have had a patchy season so far with five wins, three defeats, and one no-result from nine matches, making them playoff contenders. PBKS have a high-scoring batting unit comprising explosive batsmen Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Shashank Singh, and Glenn Maxwell. Their bowling squad, featuring pacers Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, and Lockie Ferguson, and spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, must fit into Chepauk's spin-friendly surroundings. PBKS have beaten CSK in their last five games, including the rout in Mullanpur, so they go in with good confidence.

In the ongoing IPL 2025 match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, a surprising incident unfolded as Ravindra Jadeja was forced to swap his bat. Jadeja came in to bat during the powerplay after CSK lost two quick wickets in the opening overs. The hosts had a poor start, with Mohammed Shami dismissing Shaik Rasheed for a golden duck off the first ball, and Sam Curran was dismissed for just 9 runs by Harshal Patel.

As Jadeja prepared to take the strike, the on-field umpire checked his bat and found it did not pass the gauge test. This led to Jadeja being asked to replace the bat before taking his turn. The incident drew attention from the cameras, and the focus shifted to the CSK dressing room. There, MS Dhoni, known for his meticulousness, was seen inspecting his own bat with a gauge to ensure it met the required standards.

CSK virtually out of IPL 2025

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) achieved a convincing 5-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 45 of IPL 2025. CSK, batting first, only put 154 on the board in their home ground before being all out in 19.5 overs. Dewald Brevis led the way for CSK with a 42 off 25 balls, and Ayush Mhatre chipped in 30. Regular wickets and a lack of partnerships limited their scoring opportunities. It was Harshal Patel who did the damage for SRH with 4 wickets for 28 runs, and Pat Cummins was economical and took 2 wickets for 20 runs in 4 overs.

SRH chased the target with authority, finishing on 155 in 18.4 overs with the loss of 5 wickets early on, with Khaleel Ahmed doing early damage with the wicket of Abhishek Sharma. The run chase was well handled behind Ishan Kishan's calm inning of 44 off 34 balls, supported by a match-winning inning of 32 not out from Kamindu Mendis. Heinrich Klaasen was out for a quick 10 to Ravindra Jadeja, and even though Noor Ahmad was able to claim 2 wickets for CSK, the score was too much to take on. As SRH aided their chase with performances from multiple players and with the ball from the bowling side, CSK has become ill-fated with their batting and fielding, which prevented them from pushing to an IPL playoff position. With this loss, it is almost certain that CSK is out of the playoff race.

Weather & Pitch Report

The weather in Chennai on April 25 is expected to be hot and humid, with temperatures ranging broadly between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius (95 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit), with humidity expected to be 70–80% during the evening. The pitch at the MA Chidambaram Stadium is dry, which would help spinners. However, the pitch slows down as the match progresses, and batting becomes difficult for any batsman in the later stage. Dew has more of an effect later in the second innings, which may be seen to help the team batting second.

CSK vs SRH: Match Preview

Chennai Super Kings, under the captaincy of MS Dhoni for IPL 2025, after the injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad, will look to continue their perfect record against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk. CSK includes a veteran batting group, and Shivam Dube, with Rachin Ravindra, Sam Curran, and Jadeja, provides extra all-round depth. Their spin-heavy bowling attack with Jadeja, Ashwin, and Noor Ahmed helps take advantage of Chennai's conditions. Their pace attack, which includes Pathirana and Kahleel Ahmed, will be looking to attack the Sunrisers Hyderabad batting unit. Although they have a great head-to-head record (15 wins, 21), Chennai Super Kings are not in great form lately. Sunrisers Hyderabad, led by Pat Cummins, has a plethora of explosive players, including Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Heinrich Klaasen. Sunrisers Hyderabad's pace attack includes Cummins, M. Shami, and Harshal Patel, alongside Zeeshan Ansari's spin group, and will need to adapt to the turn at Chepauk.

In IPL 2025 match 25, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a challenging performance against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Chennai Super Kings Innings

CSK had a forgettable day with the bat at Chepauk. Having decided to bat first, their innings never took any sort of momentum, and they were limited to 103/9 in 20 overs. The only partnership of any merit was between Vijay Shankar and Rahul Tripathi, who compiled 43 runs for the third wicket. Shivam Dube was the highest scorer, finishing not out on 20 from 16 deliveries. But a collapse in the middle order left them from 59/2 to 75/8, with spinners of Kolkata gaining control. Sunil Narine stood out with the ball with a tight 2 for 9, supported by Varun Chakravarthy (2/22) and Moeen Ali (2/24). The score of 103 proved to be CSK's lowest-ever home score in IPL history.

Kolkata Knight Riders Innings

KKR made the pursuit look easy. Openers Sunil Narine and Ajinkya Rahane gave a fast start, with Narine making a swift 31. Rahane added 16, and Rinku Singh ended the match in style, hitting a six to win the game. KKR reached 107/2 in 10.1 overs, winning the match by a comprehensive 8-wicket margin. Their overall endeavor, particularly their bowling attack, arranged a simple chase, thus making this one of their most clinical performances so far this season.

Post-Match Reactions

  • MS Dhoni (Captain CSK): "We've had a couple of hard nights. We need to return to basics and work on developing partnerships. Losing too many wickets in the early stages made it hard. There are positives — we've played good games, and our openers are quality batsmen. We just need to play to our strengths and not get desperate."
  • Sunil Narine (Player of the Match): "It was near-perfect game. I work on my strengths and adjust according to conditions, particularly in powerplay. My job is to provide the team with a rapid start — it works sometimes, sometimes not, but that is the strategy.

  • Moeen Ali (KKR): "Bowling against two left-handers was a bonus. The pitch was sticky, so I tried to concentrate on spin and control. Sunil's been marvelous, and I just try and bowl tight to help the other spinners. It was a fantastic team effort."
  • Ajinkya Rahane (KKR Captain): "We had our plans you know. I've played here for more than 2 years, Moeen knows the conditions and DJ (Bravo) knows it too. Frankly, I thought the wicket would play better but it didn't play the way we thought. We had our plans and it worked really well for us tonight. Still a long way to go in the tournament. So, I don't want to share too many things.
