The Pakistan Super League 2026 has suffered another setback because an experienced overseas player withdrew from the tournament. The defending champions Lahore Qalandars announced on February 2 that Namibia all-rounder David Wiese will not take part in the upcoming season because of personal commitments.

Wiese has been a central figure in Lahore Qalandars’ journey over the years because he has been associated with the franchise since 2019. The veteran all-rounder played a key role in the team’s most successful period which saw him win the PSL trophy three times in 2022 2023 and 2025.

David Wiese withdraws from PSL 2026

Wiese announced his news through social media when he explained that he withdrew because of unexpected events and vital family obligations. The 40-year-old player who has an emotional connection with the Qalandars told fans that he intends to come back to the team next year. He also confirmed that he would remain a supporter of the team while watching PSL 2026 from a distance.

The Lahore Qalandars management fully supported Wiese’s choice. Sameen Rana the franchise owner recognized Wiese’s extended service to the team because he helped develop younger athletes while competing on the field.

International players keep withdrawing from the PSL 2026 competition

Wiese's withdrawal from the competition marks another addition to the increasing roster of absent international players for this season. England batter Harry Brook recently withdrew from the tournament, while former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis was ruled out after suffering a thumb ligament injury during SA20 2026. Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has also reportedly pulled out, choosing to prioritise fitness ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

A look at Wiese’s PSL legacy

Wiese’s absence will be a significant blow for Lahore. He played 54 PSL matches for the Qalandars where he scored 629 runs with a strike rate of 161.69 and took 38 wickets. He first appeared in PSL matches with Karachi Kings during 2018 before establishing himself as a key player for Lahore's championship-winning teams. The Lahore Qalandars must now adjust their overseas player strategy because PSL 2026 approaches and they lost one of their key players.

The Saint Lucia Kings, the defending champions of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), have unveiled their retained core and newly signed players for the 2025 season, signaling their intent to defend the title with a balanced mix of international experience and Caribbean flair. The squad was officially announced during the CPL draft held on 18 June, and fans are eagerly looking forward to seeing how the Kings are looking with a new campaign.

Saint Lucia created history last season by securing their maiden-ever CPL title. They beat the Amazon Warriors by 6 wickets with 11 balls remaining in the final on 7 October 2024, chasing a total of 139 successfully. That moment not only marked a breakthrough win for the Kings but also completed the unique record of every CPL franchise having lifted the trophy at least once.

They've maintained a strong core of players from the earlier seasons, with perennial performers such as Roston Chase and Alzarri Joseph, with new additions of an assortment of foreign stars that are set to bring in quality and depth in all departments. With the season for CPL 2025 set to begin on 14 August and end with the grand finale in Guyana on 21 September, the Kings are looking to reach the ultimate stage once again.

The franchise has also embraced the CPL's developmental initiative, drafting emerging West Indies talent in the final rounds. These young guns will be integral to team dynamics since each team will be required to have at least one player from the Breakout League in every fixture—a step towards strengthening Caribbean cricket's grass roots.

In a thrilling encounter at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, Namibia triumphed over Oman by 11 runs in a Super Over, setting a new record for the most runs scored in a Super Over in T20 World Cup history. The hero of the match, David Wiese, showcased his all-round brilliance to secure the win for Namibia.

The heroic performance of David Wiese

David Wiese was the standout performer, both with the bat and the ball, in the nerve-wracking Super Over. With the bat, Wiese hammered 4, 6, 2, and 1 to propel Namibia to a formidable total. His aggressive batting ensured that Namibia posted a challenging score, putting immense pressure on Oman.

The last over drama

In a dramatic turn of events during the third game of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Namibia’s chase culminated in a thrilling tie against Oman. The 17th over saw Mehran Khan bowling a wicket maiden, including Smit’s edge boundary and dismissal, leaving Namibia needing 14 runs off 12 balls. Bilal Khan’s 18th over had Frylinck struggling, but Wiese’s six over wide long-on kept hopes alive, reducing the target to 5 runs for victory. In the final over, Mehran Khan struck again, dismissing Frylinck, and the match ended in a tie, leading to a super over to decide the winner.

Super over brings win for Namibia

The drama intensified as Wiese took the ball to defend Namibia’s total. He bowled a stellar Super Over, conceding just 2 runs off the first ball, followed by a dot, and then took a crucial wicket. Despite conceding a six off the last ball, his disciplined bowling restricted Oman to 11 runs, sealing the victory. The match concluded with Namibia celebrating a historic win, thanks to the champion, the hero, David Wiese.

<![CDATA[2022 PSL Finals, Players who can make a Massive Impact]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/2022-psl-finals-players-who-can-make-a-massive-impact/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/2022-psl-finals-players-who-can-make-a-massive-impact/ Sat, 26 Feb 2022 15:28:08 GMT

The PSL Finals are here and two teams who have made strong strides in the tournament take each other on. A final needs just small moments to sway a teams way, and each side has the quality to win those mini-battles and take the momentum. Coming into the PSL Finals let us look at some players who can make a statement with ease on the PSL Finals.

Mohammad Rizwan

Mohammad Rizwan is the second-highest run-getter this season and has been the most influential captain so far. He is setting strong platforms, allowing others to bat with freedom. Openers generally have a large say on the proceedings of a match as they help set up or dismantle the batting side’s momentum. Even a solid 30 from Rizwan will be helpful as he will be able to neutralize Shaheen Shah Afridi in the process and make things easier for the other batters.

Tim David

Tim David is striking at 199 and can be monstrous when he gets going. He hits big sixers and a couple in the PSL Finals will put Sultans in a dangerous position. With the ability to strike from ball one, Tim David will be a target for Qalandars as he can take the game away in the flash of a second.

Fakhar Zaman

Fakhar Zaman is another opener who will have a large say on how the game goes. He knows how to handle pressure better than anyone else. His century in the Champions Trophy finals against India was top quality and a clear example of his ability and influence in the game. He is the leading run-scorer in the tournament, and can get quick starts to demoralize the opposition. If Zaman manages an innings longer than 20 balls the game will definitely run away from the Sultans.

Shaheen Shah Afridi

While opening batters have a huge say on the momentum of the game, the bowlers can do just as well to dictate the motion. Shaheen Shah Afridi is among the top bowlers in Pakistan now and can change the game in an over. With his pace an talent he can easily bowl game changing overs, and if he manages to pull out such an over in the PSL Finals his team will be in a strong position.

David Wiese

David Wiese is a big name in the franchise circuit and he showed why he is such a big name in the second qualifier. He punished the bowlers in the death, and bowled a clean and neat over to help defend a score that looked like it would easily be chased down. He can make an impact with both bat and ball, and through the game there will be a lot of eyes on David Wiese.

Imran Tahir

The oldest player in the finals, and probably the most experienced along with Mohammad Hafeez, Imran Tahir, comes into yet another Final. He is an aggressive leg-spin bowler and knows how to take wickets in the middle-overs as well as his abilities are known to the world. Nearly 43, Imran Tahir is among the top wicket takers this season, and his middle over wickets can help choke oppositions with ease. His middle over spell will be important and can easily determine the course of the PSL Finals.
