The Indian spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, was responsible for taking out Devon Conway at a crucial moment during India’s fourth T20I against New Zealand in 2026, getting rid of a potentially dangerous partnership when Conway was batting on 44 runs and New Zealand was building up some momentum and looking as if they could achieve a large total. Conway was in great form, having batted well through the first 10 overs of the innings, but his inside-out shot attempt created the chance for Yadav to break through.

Conway’s dismissal also came at an important time for New Zealand, as they had just achieved a 100-run partnership for the first wicket of the innings, further adding to the significance of the moment for the home side. The left-arm wrist-spinner (Yadav) floated the ball around the fifth stump and drew Conway forward, but the batter mistimed his attempt to hit the ball and sliced it off the toe of his bat, and as it ballooned into the air towards deep extra cover, Rinku Singh made an easy catch.

Conway's departure for 44 runs stopped New Zealand's momentum and allowed India to get back into the match. Until that point in the match, Conway had looked to be batting well with a mix of being cautious but also taking calculated risks. Yadav's ability to change his speed and how high he was throwing the ball was yet again critical to his role in India's T20 team structure.

Kuldeep’s Magical Turning Point Changes the Balance of the Match

With the breaking of the opening partnership, India was able to take control of the game with the wicket of the dangerous Devon Conway. From the point of losing Conway, New Zealand had to rethink their approach and change their strategy for batting, while the Indian bowlers began to tighten their action and length in order to build pressure on the New Zealand batsmen.

Kuldeep has a great record for taking wickets and being able to produce great performances in big games. His ability to bowl with flight and use variation by bowling slower balls has consistently caused problems for the best batsmen in the world, and his recent wicket is a clear illustration of Kuldeep’s continued importance to India in limited-overs cricket, especially during high-pressure situations like this T20I series.

Just before the start of the third T20I of the five-match series between India and New Zealand at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, Harshit Rana and Devon Conway shared a friendly pat and chat between them, with the former dismissing him four times in the series, including thrice in the ODI leg.

And it suddenly became five times on the third ball of the first over. The southpaw used his feet to move leg side and take the aerial route against Rana to beat the mid-on fielder. But he failed to get the right elevation as Hardik Pandya jumped at the right time to grab a fine catch in the air to send the left-handed opening batter back in the hut.

Conway has now managed only 19 runs in five innings of 27 deliveries against Rana at an average of 3.80. His false shot percentage goes up to 28.5 in the face-off, as the left-handed batter averages 0.5 with two dismissals for one run against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) fast bowler.

Harshit Rana dismisses Devon Conway for fifth time in this tour

In the absence of Arshdeep Singh, who was given a break for the contest along with Varun Chakravarthy ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 to keep them fresh in the bowling department, Hardik Pandya shared the new ball from the other end, and he earned the success with the wicket of Rachin Ravindra.

Watch the video here:

Ravindra took the short ball on with a pull shot and picked the lone man in the deep on the leg side, where Ravi Bishnoi went forward and moved to his left in the process at the deep square leg. New Zealand found themselves under tremendous pressure, two down in two overs with 17 runs on the board.

New Zealand lost the toss and had to field first in the game, where dew would play a massive role late in the fixture. They decided to make only one change by bringing Kyle Jamieson into the eleven in place of Zakary Foulkes.

Brief Scores: New Zealand 33/2 (Glenn Phillips 17*, Harshit Rana 1/15) vs India.

Harshit Rana, who dismissed Devon Conway, in all three ODIs of the three-match series against New Zealand before the five match T20I series, marked his return to the playing 11 of the 20-over format, during the second clash against the opponent at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur as the management decided to give a break to their premier pacer, Jasprit Bumrah.

It continued to the opening T20 game as Rana dismissed Conway for the fourth time in the white-ball series, as he also gave a send-off to the wicket-keeper left-handed opening batter as he made his way back to the dressing room. As of now, Conway has an average of 4.50 in eight runs of 25 balls against the Indian pacer in this tour.

On the second wall of the fourth over of the innings, Conway did not spot the slower delivery from Rana as he was deceived by the pace and went for the shot early. He too ended the ball towards mid-off, where Hardik Pandya moved to his right and made a juggling catch comfortably.

New Zealand, who are down by a 0-1 margin in the second T20I of the series, followed the approach of the Indian side and kept on going against the bowlers from the start despite losing wickets at regular intervals.

Watch the video here:

Ratin Ravindra contributed 44 runs at number three in just twenty-six deliveries at a strike rate of 170, thanks to a couple of boundaries and four sixes, while the rest of the batter also batted at a strike rate of over 150. But, they needed someone to flourish in the late batting order, as it was provided by their captain, Mitchell Santner, who remained unbeaten on 47 runs in 27 balls.

The 47-run partnership in 19 balls for the seventh wicket carried the Black Caps to over 200-run mark as they finished with 208 for the loss of six wickets in their allotted twenty overs of the first innings.

Brief Scores: New Zealand 208/6 (Mitchell Santner 47*, Rachin Ravindra 44, Kuldeep Yadav 2/35) vs India.

India and New Zealand will meet again in the second T20I of the five-match series at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, Raipur, on Friday, January 23.

India take confidence from a dominant win in the first T20I at Nagpur. Batting first, the hosts piled up a massive total, powered by an explosive innings from Abhishek Sharma. The middle order also played useful roles before the bowlers kept New Zealand under pressure throughout the chase. With that win, India now lead the series 1–0.

New Zealand will be keen to bounce back quickly. They struggled early in the chase after losing key wickets, and although Glenn Phillips showed resistance, the target proved too steep. The visitors will look for a stronger start with the bat and a better showing from their bowlers to level the series.

IND vs NZ: Pitch Report

The Raipur pitch usually plays on the slower side. Bowlers varying their pace might find success here, especially in the middle overs. If the batsmen get set early on, big scores are still possible. Winning the toss and choosing to bat first may be a good strategy.

New Zealand batter Devon Conway acknowledged loud chants of “CSK, CSK” from the crowd at the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) Stadium in Vadodara during the first ODI against India on Sunday, January 11. Conway had played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) from 2022 to 2025 before being released ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction.

Conway played a crucial role for CSK during his tenure with the team. He was part of the title-winning squad in the 2023 season and also won the Player of the Match award in the final. In 29 matches for CSK, he scored 1,080 runs at an average of 43.20 and a strike rate of 139.72.

The left-handed batter impressed in the series opener against India, scoring 56 runs off 67 balls in the first innings before being bowled by Harshit Rana. Later in the match, while fielding near the boundary, Conway heard the crowd chanting “CSK, CSK.” He responded with a thumbs-up to the fans before turning his focus back to the game.

Conway’s recent form and IPL future

Ahead of the India tour, Devon Conway had faced CSK’s sister franchise, the Joburg Super Kings, twice during the 2026 SA20 season. Playing for the Durban Super Giants, he scored 4 and 19 in those matches as the Faf du Plessis-led side completed a double over his team.

Devon Conway goes unsold in IPL 2026 auction

The New Zealand opener entered the IPL 2026 mini auction with a base price of INR 2 crore but did not receive any bids and went unsold. He had a decent 2025 season, scoring 922 runs at an average of 31.79 and a strike rate of 126.99. However, franchises chose to invest in younger talents instead.

Despite this, New Zealand have named Conway in their squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. He is expected to continue his opening partnership with Finn Allen in the tournament.

New Zealand started the India tour with a great opening partnership in the three-match ODI series opener, where both the Blackcaps' openers scored half-centuries, but the Indian pacer Harshit Rana dismissed both the set openers brilliantly in his fruitful middle overs spell.

Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara is hosting the ODI series opener on Sunday (January 11), where the hosts India chose to field first after winning the toss.

New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls set a strong partnership after getting some lives. They set a 117-run partnership for the first wicket, which was New Zealand's second-highest ODI partnership for the first wicket against India in India. Both openers completed their half-centuries in the 20th over.

Harshit Rana dismissed Henry Nicholls with slower

In the 22nd over, while Harshit Rana returned for a new spell, he was punished for two back-to-back fours by Nicholls before Rana's change of pace did the trick for the hosts to pick up a key wicket. After conceding two consecutive fours, Rana delivered a full wide slower with the pace around 113 kmph, and Nicholls, surprised, went for a shot that travelled low to the keeper KL Rahul, who dived to take a good catch to bring that wicket for the hosts.

Harshit Rana bowled Devon Conway with faster

In his next over, Rana's pace change brought another wicket with the set opener Conway, and this time the wicket came with the pace of 140+ kmph. In that over, the right-arm fast bowler continuously tested the opposition batters with his pace and slower deliveries. After delivering a slower ball, Rana ended that over with a 140+ kmph, where Conway had an inside edge that dragged on the leg stump to uproot the bails.

While Nicholls was out for 62 off 69 balls with eight fours, Conway was dismissed for 56 off 67 balls with six fours and one six.

New Zealand completed a dominant Test match with a strong all-round performance, outplaying West Indies in every department to secure a big win. The hosts stayed in control throughout the match, from long batting efforts to sharp bowling on a tiring pitch.

Fast bowler Jacob Duffy led the attack with an excellent 5/42. He finished the series as the standout player and showed New Zealand’s depth despite a weakened pace attack.

Duffy’s five-wicket haul helped him break Sir Richard Hadlee’s New Zealand record of 80 wickets in a calendar year. It was a major achievement in a season where he carried a heavy workload.

The right-arm seamer ended the series with 23 wickets at an average of 15.4. He took three five-wicket hauls and bowled more than 154 overs across the three Tests as New Zealand’s main fast bowler.

“I saw that list at lunchtime, and there were some great names on it. To be on any list with those names was special,” said Duffy, who was later named Player of the Series.

West Indies Collapses in the Chase

Chasing survival on the final day, the West Indies started well. The openers looked confident and moved to 87 without losing a wicket. For a short time, it seemed they could fight back.

However, the dismissal of Brandon King changed the match. West Indies quickly fell from 87/0 to 98/5 and lost control. Jacob Duffy struck again by dismissing Roston Chase, and New Zealand tightened the pressure.

After lunch, Shai Hope tried to resist. He played patiently on a difficult pitch and stayed at the crease for a long time. But his effort ended when Ajaz Patel trapped him lbw. Joshua Imlach showed some fight, but once the lower-order batters came in, the end came quickly. Duffy finished the innings by dismissing Jayden Seales to complete a deserved five-wicket haul and seal the win.

New Zealand’s Complete Dominance

New Zealand had taken control of the match earlier with a huge first-innings total of 575. Devon Conway led the way with a brilliant double century, while Tom Latham supported him with a fine hundred. West Indies replied with a strong century from Kavem Hodge but still fell 155 runs behind.

In the second innings, New Zealand batted freely and with confidence. Latham and Conway once again gave a strong start and scored quick centuries. With enough runs and time, New Zealand declared again and set West Indies a tough target of 462.

By Day 5, the pitch had become difficult, with uneven bounce and movement. West Indies struggled to handle the conditions, while New Zealand’s bowlers used them well. Declaring twice in the match showed how strong New Zealand were with both bat and ball.

Jacob Duffy was named Player of the Series after a memorable campaign. He called it a special year and one of the best periods of his career. Devon Conway, named Player of the Match, said the achievement had not fully sunk in yet. He thanked the good batting conditions and said his simple and positive approach helped him succeed.

In the end, New Zealand played with discipline and confidence throughout the series. West Indies fought at times but were hurt by key mistakes and a final-day collapse that decided the match.
