South Africa and West Indies are set to clash in the opening T20I of their three-match series on Tuesday, January 27, with Boland Park in Paarl hosting the contest. The Proteas come into the series after a challenging five-match T20I assignment against India, where they lost 1-3, with one game abandoned due to rain. Led by Aiden Markram, South Africa will be keen to bounce back strongly and build momentum, especially with the T20 World Cup drawing closer.

The West Indies, meanwhile, arrive after a narrow 1-2 defeat in a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan held in Dubai earlier this month. Their campaign in that series was hampered by the absence of key players, including regular skipper Shai Hope and in-form batter Sherfane Rutherford, who were engaged in the SA20 league. With more of their senior players now available, the Caribbean side will aim to put up a stronger challenge against the hosts.

Dewald Brevis]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/top-5-ipl-2026-stars-who-shined-in-sa20-2025-26-ft-dewald-brevis/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/top-5-ipl-2026-stars-who-shined-in-sa20-2025-26-ft-dewald-brevis/ Mon, 26 Jan 2026 21:39:56 GMT

The SA20 2025-26 ended when Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) defeated Pretoria Capitals (PC) in the final played at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on Sunday, January 25. In the first innings, PC batted first, scoring 158 runs for 7 wickets in their full quota of twenty overs, with Dewald Brevis contributing a sensational 101 runs scored off of 56 balls, including 8 fours and 7 sixes. Despite this impressive effort from this young man, he could not guide Pretoria to a huge total. His innings not only showcased his ability to hit the cricket ball long distances but also demonstrated his ability to maintain composure under pressure; the T20 scouts, as well as fans, are excited about Dewald's potential ability, and rightfully so.

After losing four wickets within 48 runs, SEC was also in early trouble. Matthew Breetzke and Captain Tristan Stubbs came together to form an unbroken partnership of 114 runs off of 64 balls, leading the way for SEC to win the match. Stubbs scored 63 not out off of 41 balls while Breetzke made 68 not out off of 49 balls. After the tremendous effort of the pair, SEC was victorious by 6 wickets with 4 balls remaining, winning SEC’s third SA20 title in four years. Now that the tournament is over, we are excited about the performance of several of the players that stood out during this tournament when they play in the IPL in 2026.

1. Dewald Brevis

Dewald Brevis

Dewald Brevis has emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in global T20 cricket, and his performances in the SA20 2025‑26 have catapulted him into the spotlight ahead of IPL 2026. Nicknamed “Baby AB” for his elegant stroke play reminiscent of AB de Villiers, Brevis dominated bowling attacks throughout the SA20 season with brutal hitting, impeccable timing, and fearless intent. His ability to maintain a strike rate well above 150 made him invaluable to Pretoria Capitals, and his batting exploits caught the attention of IPL scouts and franchises alike.

See Also: Shai Hope named captain as West Indies announces squad for T20 World Cup 2026

Brevis didn’t just score runs in the SA20 — he did so with consistency and impact. Whether it was setting the tone at the top of the innings or accelerating in the death overs, he showed a complete range of T20 batting skills. The aura he generated in SA20 is a strong indicator of how he could flourish in the IPL’s electrifying atmosphere. His power hitting, innovation against all types of bowling, and comfort in high‑pressure situations make him one of the most intriguing prospects for IPL 2026. Expect teams to rely on his bat for quick starts and explosive middle‑overs fireworks.

2. Aiden Markram

Aiden Markram

Another SA20 star turning heads ahead of IPL 2026 is Aiden Markram. A seasoned campaigner who led Sunrisers Eastern Cape with authority, Markram blends tactical maturity with batting dynamism. In SA20 2025‑26, he was among the top run‑contributors and provided crucial innings at key moments. His capability to build innings while maintaining a healthy strike rate makes him particularly suited for IPL conditions, where balance and adaptability are vital.

Markram’s credentials go beyond runs; he’s a proven leader with experience in various T20 leagues around the world. This leadership facet enhances his value in the IPL, where teams constantly seek players who can marshal resources and guide younger talents. With solid technique and experience handling pace and spin alike, Markram’s confidence and consistency will make him a key IPL performer. His all‑around game has the potential to influence matches, making him a player to watch once franchises kick off their 2026 campaigns.

3. Marco Jansen

Marco Jansen

Marco Jansen has proven that his SA20 success translates to IPL value. Known for his tall, intimidating presence and ability to extract bounce, Jansen was a standout with both bat and ball, making him a genuine all‑round asset. Across the SA20 2025‑26 season, he delivered breakthroughs with disciplined seam bowling, and also contributed runs when needed — a rare combination that IPL franchises gold‑rush for.

In a league where bowlers who can keep the runs down and still chip in with bat form the backbone of balanced sides, Jansen ticks both boxes. His left‑arm pace offers variety, and his knack for picking up crucial wickets at pivotal moments boosts any side’s bowling depth. Moreover, a lower‑order batting capability gives teams flexibility, making him a standout SA20 performer ready to tackle the rigours of IPL competition. Jansen’s continued development could make him a game‑changer in the 2026 season.

4. Anrich Nortje

Anrich Nortje

Anrich Nortje’s SA20 2025‑26 campaign showcased his return to peak rhythm after battling injuries. With raw speed consistently flirting with the upper limits of pace bowling, Nortje terrorised batsmen and claimed a clutch of wickets that proved decisive for his team. His ballistic bowling style — hitting hardest at the start and during death overs — is something IPL franchises value immensely.

Nortje’s ability to run through strong batting lineups in SA20 signals he can do exactly that in IPL 2026. Fast bowlers who can deliver in crunch moments and sustain pressure are often IPL match‑winners, and Nortje’s rhythm and aggression make him a potent weapon. If he stays fit and maintains his lethal form, Nortje will likely bolster any IPL bowling attack, bringing speed, skill, and menace to the crease — especially on batting‑friendly Indian pitches.

5. Sherfane Rutherford

Sherfane Rutherford

Sherfane Rutherford enjoyed an impressive SA20 2025-26 campaign, emerging as one of Pretoria Capitals’ most consistent batters. The West Indies left-hander featured in 11 matches and scored 334 runs across 10 innings, averaging a remarkable 66.80. His attacking intent stood out, reflected in a strike rate of 165.34, while two fluent half-centuries underlined his ability to combine power with control. Time and again, Rutherford provided stability in the middle order and accelerated when required, making him a vital contributor to Pretoria’s run to the latter stages of the tournament.

Rutherford’s strong showing in South Africa has set the stage for an exciting IPL 2026 season. The Caribbean batter will turn out for five-time champions Mumbai Indians, adding depth and firepower to their batting unit. He previously represented Gujarat Titans during the 2025 IPL season but was traded to MI ahead of the 2026 auction. With his recent form and growing experience in global T20 leagues, Rutherford will be eager to make a significant impact in Mumbai’s star-studded lineup.

Since his introduction into international cricket, Dewald Brevis has made his no-look six the most famous around the world, especially in the shortest format of the game. And playing for the Pretoria Capitals, against the MI Cape Towns in the ongoing 2024/26 season of the SA20, he displayed the special shot against the country’s premier pacer, Kagiso Rabada.

The Capitals were 121 for the loss of four wickets in 16 overs when Kagiso Rabada came to bowl his last over of the spell, having already taken two wickets for 19 runs in his three overs. The first ball was flicked in deep into the stands, that backward square leg putting his head into the ground by Brevis. He threw his hand on the cut and got the top of the bounds to smash the second shot over deep backward point for the same result.

On the first ball of the 19th over, it was an easy pick for Brevis, who hammered the drive high over long gone for another massive 6th before being dismissed on the very next ball for 34 runs in 19 balls with the help of one boundary and three sixes.

Along with him, Sherfane Rutherford played a sensational knock of 53 runs in 27 balls with the help of three boundaries and five sixes at a strike rate of nearly 200, which helped the Capitals finish on 185 in their allotted 20 overs for the loss of six wickets.

Reza Hendricks finished with 68 runs; most of his sixes came when the game was already done and dusted for the visitors, who are now inches away from officially getting disqualified from the tournament. Meanwhile, the Capitals earned the top spot thanks to the bonus point.

Brief Scores: Pretoria Capitals 185/6 (Sherfane Rutherford 53, Dewald Brevis 34, Kagiso Rabada 2/33) beat MI Cape Town 132/7 (Reeza Hendricks 68*, Gideon Peters 3/32) by 53 runs.

South Africa is pushing hard to challenge Team India (IND vs SA 1st ODI) in the second innings at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi while chasing a target of 350 in 50 overs. After sustaining 3 early blows, the visiting team looked promising for their middle-order batting line-up.

Harshit Rana was brilliant with the new ball in hand. He took the wickets of Ryan Rickelton and Quinton de Kock in the second over of the second innings. Arshdeep Singh got the wicket of captain Aiden Markram; South Africa lost 3 wickets for 11 runs only on the scoreboard. The three early departures gave India an instant boost, and South Africa took a wallop. Three middle-order batters—Matthew Breetzke and Tony de Zorzi—provided South Africa some much-needed stability in the middle.

Dewald Brevis walked into the ground with the bat as Zorzi departed for 39 off 35. With the appearance of Brevis, the X-factor of the South African batting lineup came into the contest. As long as the partnership of Breetzke and Brevis remained on the pitch, the crowd at the JSCA International Stadium got multiple moments to be excited as the young South African batter on multiple occasions sent the ball into the gallery for maximums.

Harshit Rana took Dewald Brevis' wicket

The entertaining innings of Brevis stopped because of Harshit Rana. The pitcher sent off the aggressive batter with a brilliantly planned delivery. On the 4th delivery of the 22nd over of the second innings, Rana delivered a full, outside-off delivery. Brevis hit the ball towards the deep point cordon.

He got the height; the ball went miles into the sky but did not get the required distance to clear the rope. Near the rope, Ruturaj Gaikwad waited for a long time and grabbed the ball safely into his palms. Dewald departs for a breezy 37 off 28 balls.

Dewald Brevis missed the previous three-match ODI series for the South Africa side against Pakistan due to a shoulder injury. But he returned to the eleven during the opening ODI against India at the JSCA Cricket Complex in Ranchi and showed his impact from the very first ball of the tiny knock in the 350-run chase.

Brevis started his windy knock with a massive six straight down the ground against Ravindra Jadeja. It was a tossed-up delivery from the left-arm spinner as the right-handed batter used his power to crack it straight down the ground. On the fourth delivery of the same over, he went forward and lofted Jadeja for another massive over boundary.

Harshit Rana came into the attack as Brevis played the cut shot to see the ball fly wide of the backward point region to the fence. On the fourth ball of the same over, he managed his special no-look six. It was a length delivery, and the batter flicked it with swag over the deep mid-wicket region for a massive over boundary.

Despite Brevis’ big shots, Rana had the last laugh as the SA batter couldn’t smash another big shot with the batter turning on his hands. He didn’t get the right elevation on the delivery and sliced it into the hands of the sweeper in the cover region. He got a send-off by the KKR bowler after scoring 37 runs in 28 balls at a strike rate of just over 100.

Earlier in the game, Virat Kohli’s special 52nd century of the game, a knock of 135 runs in 120 balls, before KL Rahul smashed 60 runs in 56 balls, along with Ravindra Jadeja’s 32 runs in 20 balls, fired the Blue Brigade to 349/8 in their allotted 50 overs of the first inning.

In reply, SA lost three wickets early in the chase for 11 runs in the fifth over before recovering to 190/5 in 28 overs, thanks to major contributions through the partnerships.

With the dismissal of Rohit Sharma, Ruturaj Gaikwad came into the middle at number four to meet Virat Kohli during the opening ODI of the three-match series between India and South Africa at the JSCA Cricket Stadium in Ranchi. It was a golden chance for the Maharashtra batter to celebrate a fine knock with the bat and stretch his good knock.

Ruturaj Gaikwad took his time in the middle and smashed eight runs off 14 deliveries before going back in the pavilion, thanks to a superb catch from Dewald Brevis. It was a good length delivery in the channel, which was driven firmly on the up, and it went quickly to the right backward point where the fielder was active.

Brevis stood a few yards inside the circle and was closer than usual as the ball kept travelling around the region before he stretched his hands and showed outstanding reflexes to grab the fine catch. Brevis was excellent in that region, stopping some fabulous balls to put pressure on the batters.

Winning the toss, the visiting side decided to send the hosts in the middle with the bat as Yashasvi Jaiswal gave them a cracking, tiny start of 18 runs at a strike rate of 100 with the help of two boundaries and one six. Rohit smashed a fine knock of 57 runs in 51 balls with the help of five boundaries and three sixes at a strike rate of 111.76.

India’s middle order struggled to find rhythm with the bat as Gaikwad got eight runs in 14 balls before Washington Sundar made his way to 13 runs in 19 balls with the help of one six at a strike rate of around 70. Virat Kohli smashed his fine century.

In South Africa, only Ottneil Baartman found success with the ball as he picked up two wickets for 37 runs in seven overs at an economy rate of 5.30. Marco Jansen and Nandre Burger also picked up one wicket each.

India and South Africa (IND vs SA) are preparing their best for the important 2-match Test series of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) circle. Ahead of the first match of the series, which is scheduled to start on November 14, there are some interesting updates about the South Africa Test squad.

South Africa named their full-strength squad for the Test series against India. Their skipper Temba Bavuma is also with the team and likely to play the first match as well. But some of their key players, as of now, are not certain to play at the first match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Surprisingly, ace South African pacer Kagiso Rabada did not bowl during the practice season on November 12. Why he did not go up for bowling in the nets is not clear. Another SA player who is uncertain for the IND vs. SA 1st Test is Dewald Brevis. He practiced on the ground with heavy taping on the upper part of his body. The 22-year-old batter played a couple of tests against Pakistan but never looked too comfortable against the spinners. In three innings, he scored a half-century and returned twice with ducks.

The IPL trade of Ravindra Jadeja for Sanju Samson that was once considered impossible has now progressed to the stage of serious negotiations. As per the reports available from Cricbuzz, both the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have gone so far as to hold discussions regarding what one day could be the most remarkable player swap in the history of the IPL.

Both ₹18 crore players are significant parts of their teams and franchises, Jadeja, as the all-rounder powerhouse of CSK, and Samson, as the captain who motivates the team of RR. However, reports indicate that the bargaining process is not an easy one. Sources claim that the Rajasthan Royals do not want to simply trade one player for the other and are demanding that another player from CSK be included in the negotiations, they are totally afraid of giving up their position, so that has very much contributed to the delay.

RR want Brevis in Jadeja–Samson trade, but CSK not agreeing yet

It seems that RR’s desire to have South African superstar Dewald Brevis in their team is what is causing the delay in the deal. The young player was transferred to CSK during the season's mid-point and gradually became one of the greatest prospects in the world cricket scenario. His firework-like batting displays coupled with an ever-increasing recognition witnessed him gaining a colossal bid from Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 auction held earlier in the year. However, CSK that identifies Brevis as a core player of their future, is not ready to trade him off, and thus is very clear that the player will not be included in any deal.

Confidential sources additionally disclose that Manoj Badale, the lead owner of RR based in the UK, is already in Mumbai and is personally taking charge of the negotiations. On the other hand, CSK has already interacted with Jadeja prior to commencing talks, which is an indicator of the level of respect they provide to the experienced player.

At the moment, the decision is up to the Rajasthan Royals. Chennai Super Kings consider giving up Jadeja, one of the best all-rounders in the world, a big concession already and are not prepared to include any more players in the deal.

Curiously, Rajasthan Royals have also contacted other franchises such as Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants, and Kolkata Knight Riders. Sunrisers, however, are reportedly not interested as they already have a strong batting core consisting of Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Heinrich Klaasen. For the time being, the question remains whether Rajasthan Royals will lower their expectations or if the trade, despite all the excitement around it, will turn out to be one that nearly occurred.
