Gujarat Titans (GT) achieved a dramatic 3-wicket victory (DLS method) over Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 56 of IPL 2025. MI, batting first, put up a fighting 155/8, fueled by Will Jacks' rapid 53 off 35 and useful inputs from Suryakumar Yadav (35) and Corbin Bosch (27). MI, though, were unable to muster a final burst in the death overs and fell short of what skipper Hardik Pandya afterwards confessed was a par score.

GT’s chase got off to a cautious start, but frequent rain interruptions and a revised DLS target of 148 in 19 overs complicated things.
Shubman Gill anchored the innings with a composed 43, while Sherfane Rutherford (28 off 15) applied late fireworks to seal the win on the last ball. Despite a strong bowling effort by MI’s Jasprit Bumrah (2/19) and Trent Boult (2/22), GT held their nerve.

Pandya lamented that he lost his team the match through a few costly no-balls, and Gill was reflective on how his side had shown greater fortitude and flexibility in high-pressure situations than MI. GT's win leaves their playoff hopes very much intact, while MI's playoff hopes were damaged further.

1. Subpar Batting Performance—20-30 Runs Short

Mumbai Indians never really got going with the bat. Although Will Jacks (53 off 35) and Suryakumar Yadav (35 off 24) built some momentum, the middle order fell flat. Corbin Bosch added a useful 27, but nobody had the urgency to push the run rate higher in the death overs. Hardik Pandya was right that the total was below par on that pitch - MI was at least 175-180. They did not find the boundary in the final overs, which left them potentially 20-30 runs short, and in a tight finish, these runs were costly.

2. No-Balls at Crucial Moments

Having discipline and control with the ball is key in T20 cricket, and MI threw that away badly. Hardik Pandya bowled multiple no-balls, including one with a few balls left, and granted GT a free hit. These extras not only added runs but also broke the rhythm and created pressure. As the match was decided on the last ball, these small margins had a sizeable impact, and it effectively drove the game in GT's favor.

3. Momentum Shift After Rain Break

Rain was a critical factor in shifting the game's course. MI were going along nicely with their control of GT's innings when they stopped for the rain break to enforce DLS, but after the break, GT's revised target became 148 in 19 overs. The ball became wet, the field was slow, and the bowlers found it hard to grip the ball. This hurt the MI bowlers' plans and put GT's batters—especially Rutherford—on their front foot. There was a momentum shift after the break that MI did not recover from.

In IPL 2025 Match 56, Gujarat Titans (GT) pulled off a nail-biting victory against Mumbai Indians (MI), winning by 3 wickets in a DLS target adjustment with a target of 147 runs in 19 overs as they finished with 147/7. MI scored 155/8 in 20 overs and set a competitive score with the DLS now in favor of the Gujarat Titans as rain altered the game’s dynamics.

Mumbai Indians Innings

Mumbai Indians finished with a respectable total of 155/8 in 20 overs. The top score was by Will Jacks with 53 off 35 balls—good stroke play from him. Suryakumar Yadav contributed an important 35 off 24 balls, and Corbin Bosch played helpful innings to score 27 off 22 balls. At times they appeared to add some momentum with the bat, but rain during MI's innings and tidy bowling from Gujarat held their innings in check. Sai Kishore took 2/34, but Gerald Coetzee (1/10) and Arshad Khan (1/18) from the MI bowlers really scraped by. Just as MI was trying to accelerate during the middle overs, conditioning stopped play & their rhythm was interrupted briefly.

Gujarat Titans Innings

Gujarat Titans looked to chase their rain-adjusted target of 148 in 19 overs and were pushed to the edge in a thrilling but dramatic finish. Shubman Gill batted sensibly to score 43 off 46 balls, while Jos Buttler contributed a handy 30 off 27. The difference in the last few overs appeared to be Sherfane Rutherford, who threw the bat at the ball to score 28 off 15. MI bowlers fought for breakthroughs—Jasprit Bumrah (2/19), Trent Boult (2/22), and Ashwani Kumar (2/28) all took minor breakthroughs, but the rain-adjusted target meant GT had considerably less pressure, and they held their nerves to cross the line off the final delivery, winning by 3 wickets (DLS method).

MI vs GT: Post Match Reactions

Shubman Gill (GT Captain & Player of the Match): Gill conceded there was "a little bit of chaos" after the rain break but was pleased with how things turned out. He said the pitch was slow, which made stroke play difficult at times, and described the first half of the innings like a Test match. There were some frustrating moments, particularly when losing four wickets in quick succession, but he ended by stating he was just happy his team got a chance again and made the most of it.

Gerald Coetzee (GT): Coetzee kept it pretty simple: "See it, hit it." He was preparing for yorkers from Deepak Chahar and was surprised by a bouncer. Coetzee noted he loves to celebrate and reiterated the team wasn’t too serious but was very competitive.

Hardik Pandya (MI Captain) Pandya said it was a hard loss but was proud of the way his team fought. He felt they fell short by 20-30 runs and noted the bowlers did their job. However, Pandya admitted their no-balls - including his - hurt them badly. The wet state of the ground and all the rain breaks made it difficult to find any rhythm.
