Durban Super Giants are set to host Paarl Royals in Match 27 of the SA20 2025–26 at Kingsmead, Durban, on Saturday, January 17. The Aiden Markram-led Super Giants have endured a tough season, struggling to find consistency. Despite managing only two wins from nine matches, they remain mathematically alive in the playoff race. However, their margin for error is extremely slim. Adding to their concerns, Durban enter this contest after suffering a six-wicket defeat against the same opponents, making this fixture a crucial opportunity for redemption.

Paarl Royals, in stark contrast, have enjoyed a dominant campaign and currently sit comfortably at the top of the points table. With five victories, just two losses, and one no-result, the Royals have already secured qualification for the playoffs. Led by David Miller, the side has found momentum at the right time, winning their last two matches against Durban Super Giants and Pretoria Capitals. Brimming with confidence, the Royals will aim to complete a season double over Durban and further solidify their supremacy.

Durban Super Giants will face Pretoria Capitals in Match 16 of the SA20 2025–26 at Kingsmead, Durban, on Wednesday, January 7. This will be the second meeting between the two sides this season, after their earlier encounter was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain following the toss. Both teams will be eager to finally take the field against each other and gain valuable points as the tournament enters a crucial phase.

The Super Giants have endured a slow start, managing just one win from five matches and currently sitting fourth on the points table, with two of their fixtures washed out. Pretoria Capitals have experienced a similarly challenging run, also securing only one victory from five games and occupying fifth place. With both teams closely placed in the standings, this contest could play a key role in shaping their playoff ambitions.

The SA20 2025-26 season is going to be thrilling, with an opening match between MI Cape Town (MICT) and Durban's Super Giants (DSG) on Friday, December 26, at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town.

MI Cape Town head into the tournament as defending champions and will be keen to get off to a winning start. Under the leadership of Rashid Khan, there is much depth to each department in the team. A nice mix of experienced international stars and local talent makes MICT keen on continuing their dominance from last season.

Durban’s Super Giants, on the other hand, will be led by Aiden Markram this season. They finished at the bottom of the table last year and will be keen to turn things around. With several quality players added to their squad, DSG will look to start the new season on a positive note and forget their poor run from the previous edition.

The SA20 is scheduled to start on December 26, and South Africa’s festive cricket season will not only be lit, but it is also going to be a major clash with the Boxing Day Ashes Test. The country has a buzzing franchise cricket atmosphere and the Durban Super Giants are among the first teams to reinforce their squads for the tournament’s initial stage.

Simon Harmer’s brilliant Test performance gives a very welcome boost as Narine is out for the first few SA20 games

Durban have reported the acquisition of the veteran Proteas off-spinner Simon Harmer, who will stand in short term for Sunil Narine. Narine is presently in UAE for ILT20 which runs until January 4, 2026. This means Narine will not participate in the initial five SA20 matches, which is the time Harmer is expected to have a big impact during his tenure.

Harmer comes back to Kingsmead in fantastic form. It is true that his SA20 stats so far aren’t that impressive, he has taken only 9 wickets in 23 matches, but his recent red-ball performances testify to his talent. The 36-year-old was remarkable during South Africa’s recent Test trip, first he made 6/50 against Pakistan in Rawalpindi to complete a historic Proteas’ victory and he also reached the milestone of 1,000 first-class wickets.

ALSO SEE: Major setback for RCB as Jaipur POCSO court rejects star pacer’s bail plea ahead of IPL 2026

He then went a step further in India, showing the world his best cricket. He got 17 wickets and took them at an unbelievable **Dale Steyn’s 8.94 average during the two Tests; thus he broke the record for most wickets by a South African in a Test series in India. He was the star of the match for South Africa with his 6/37 in Guwahati that made the series 2-0 in their favor - thus marking their first Test series win in India after a long gap of 25 years.

Harmer's and the batting strength of Durban keep Super Giants at the right place even early in Season 4

The team of Durban still stays quite strong in terms of balance. The batting unit, which is headed by Aiden Markram and Jos Buttler, with Heinrich Klaasen and David Wiese in the middle, offers quite a lot of firepower even when Narine is not playing.

Narine is anticipated to come to the squad after he is back from his overseas duties; this will be his first SA20 appearance for the Super Giants. Until then, the firepower of Harmer's experience, control, and super-hot form gives Durban a dependable option as they look for a strong beginning in Season 4.

The Lucknow Super Giants have begun early preparations for the IPL 2026 season by sending a group of domestic fast bowlers to South Africa for a focused training stint during the upcoming SA20.

The 2025–26 edition of the SA20 is scheduled to begin on December 26 and conclude on January 25, offering LSG a valuable opportunity to prepare their pace unit in overseas conditions. As per reports, Avesh Khan, Mohsin Khan, and young left-arm pacer Naman Tiwari are set to travel to Durban next week. One or two additional players may also join the group.

The bowlers will train with Durban Super Giants, LSG’s sister franchise, allowing seamless coordination between the two setups. Permission for the training stint has already been granted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, as none of the players are currently involved in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

South Africa stint key to recovery and long-term pace planning

For Avesh and Mohsin, the South Africa trip is especially significant. Both pacers are recovering from knee surgeries they underwent in July and have been out of competitive cricket for several months. Avesh last played for LSG earlier this year, while Mohsin’s most recent appearance came in December 2024. The SA20 environment will help them gradually regain match rhythm and fitness ahead of IPL 2026.

Naman Tiwari, meanwhile, is seen as a long-term prospect. The 20-year-old left-armer, who can consistently clock speeds above 140 kmph, was bought by LSG for ₹1 crore at the IPL 2026 auction despite interest from Rajasthan Royals. Though yet to make his domestic debut, the stint in South Africa is expected to accelerate his development.

The pacers will work under the supervision of Lance Klusener, Tom Moody, Bharat Arun, and Carl Crowe, all part of the LSG support structure. With fitness, form, and depth in focus, this overseas training block marks an important step in LSG’s build-up to IPL 2026.

The two-time SA20-winning captain, Aiden Markram, headlined the auction for the Durban Super Giants as their highest-paid player in history. The T20I captain of the South Africa side, who is already part of the Super Giants family in Lucknow of the Indian Premier League (IPL), fetched R14 million at the paddle bidding war.

The Durban side made a unique post of a ship going towards their new mission for the 2025/26 season, as they named Aiden Markram as their new leader of the side. It was given after they didn’t retain or get back their former leader, the left-arm spinner of the side, Keshav Maharaj. After the last season’s poor performance, a change was expected anyway.

Markram, the 30-year-old, has smashed 4950 T20 runs in 190 innings at an average of 30.74 and a strike rate of 133.67 with 32 fifties and one century. The Centurion-born has clubbed 967runs overall in SA20 at a strike rate of more than 130 with five fifties and one century.

Durban Super Giants name Aiden Markram their new captain for SA20 2025/26

With a huge superstar of the shortest format, Heinrich Klassen, in the side, the speculation was whether Markram would get the responsibility of leadership, but his fine CV of two titles for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape has perhaps pushed him to the position. He is expected to open with Davon Conway in the format.

In the spin department, they will have to seriously great spinners, Noor Ahmed and Sunil Narine. Jos Buttler is expected to bat at the number three position as they will have the mixture of youth and experience of Kwena Maphaka and Gerald Coetzee in the pace bowling department.

Durban will begin their campaign against the MI Cape Town on December 26 through the curtain raiser at Newlands before their first home clash two days later against the same side at Kingsmead.

Durban Super Giants ended the previous season of the SA20 with the wooden spoon at the bottom of the points table with two victories in 10 encounters at a net run rate of -1.272. The two wins came on the opening and the very last game of the group stage of the season against the Pretoria Capitals and the Johannesburg Super Kings, respectively, as they aim for a far better season.

Durban came into the auction with the second-biggest purse of R29.5 million with the requirement of signing 15 players, including four overseas and two Under-23 players. Their first signing of the auction came in the form of left-arm pacer, Kwena Maphaka, for R2.30 million before making the second most expensive buy of Aiden Markram for R14 million.

In the opening position, they got the New Zealand opening batter, Devon Conway, for R325k besides signing another player from the Johannesburg Super Kings in the form of the right-arm Protea pacer, Gerald Coetzee, for R7.40 million in an intense bidding war with the Pretoria Capitals.

Durban was already incredibly strong before coming into the auction, having made the pre-signing of Jos Buttler and Sunil Narine. In the spin department, they also added Bangladesh’s left-arm spinner, Taijul Islam, perhaps as the potential replacement of the West Indies veteran. Noor Ahmed will always start in the eleven along with the wild-card of Heinrich Klassen.

Eathan Bosch will be another good player for the Super Giants as they also brought back the left-handed batter, Tony de Zorzi. In the all-rounder’s department, they got another Joburg player, David Wiese, who can play the role of the lower-order batter and provide four overs of pace.

The SA20 Season 4 Auction promises to be an exciting event as all six franchises have already made strong statements by revealing their list of retained and pre-signed players ahead of the auction.

Each team was allowed to keep up to six players, with a limit of three South African and three overseas cricketers. This player retention window concluded on July 18, giving teams a solid foundation to build upon for the upcoming season. Additionally, all franchises have secured their six Wildcard picks. These Wildcards could include either overseas stars or local players who were part of the franchise's squad in Season 3.

Attention now shifts to the auction scheduled for September 9 in Johannesburg, where teams will compete for the remaining 84 spots. With a total auction purse of USD 7.4 million, the bidding is expected to be intense as teams look to complete their squads for Season 4.
