The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has commented on the controversy about Joe Root being dismissed during the second Test against India at Edgbaston. The dismissal divided opinion among fans and analysts, many of whom thought that the delivery from India pacer Akash Deep had been a no-ball. Observers pointed out that Deep’s back foot appeared to touch the return crease while delivering the ball that clean bowled Root.

However, the MCC has now clarified that the delivery was legal and upheld the on-field and third umpire’s decision.
In a statement, the MCC said, “On Day four of India's Test against England last week, there were questions raised about the delivery from Akash Deep, which bowled Joe Root, with some fans and commentators believing it to be a no-ball. While Deep landed unusually wide on the crease, and some of his back foot appeared to touch the ground outside the return crease, the third umpire did not call a no ball. MCC is happy to clarify that this was a correct decision in Law.”

The MCC explained the specifics of the law concerning back-foot no-balls.
“For a delivery to be fair in respect of the feet, in the delivery stride the bowler's back foot must land within and not touching the return crease appertaining to his/her stated mode of delivery,” the statement added. “MCC has always defined the moment that the back foot lands as the first point of contact with the ground. As soon as there is any part of the foot touching the ground, that foot has landed, and it is the foot's position at that time that is to be considered for a back foot no-ball."

Akash Deep's Dream Spell Ends Edgbaston Drought

The incident came during a historic match for India, as the team broke a 58-year winless streak at Edgbaston, leveling the five-Test series 1–1 with a thumping 336-run victory. In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, it was debutant Akash Deep who took center stage with a total of 10 wickets in the Test match.

The 28-year-old fast bowler from Sasaram, Bihar, also recorded his first five-wicket haul, including 6/99 in England's second innings while England were bowled out for 271, chasing an asking target of 608. His performance received major acclaim and was crucial to India's emphatic victory.

India's dominating 336-run victory over England at Edgbaston not only drew the five-match series level at 1-1 but also carved out a special niche in Mohammed Siraj's heart. The fast bowler, whose career best was a key to India's historic first-ever Test triumph at the ground, said the match was the third-best Test of his life, after two unforgettable affairs in 2021.

Talking in a video uploaded by the BCCI, Siraj stated, "This is the third-best match of my life. First was Gabba (2021), second was Lord's (2021), and now this. I can't tell you the feeling."

Siraj played a crucial role in the first innings of Edgbaston, taking six wickets, one of which was the key scalp of Zak Crawley in the second. But it was the combined excellence of the Indian bowling department that shone through. On debut, Akash Deep took 10 wickets from the match and helped England never get going after initial shocks. Siraj disclosed how he continued to mentor the young pacer throughout the match, frequently urging him from mid-off to work on consistent zones instead of hunting for wickets.

From Gabba Glory to Edgbaston Excellence: Siraj Names His Top Three Tests

Shubman Gill's 430-run stand across both innings was the other major highlight, with the captain leading by example in what Siraj described as a "special and historic win". Siraj's number one selections the Gabba and Lord's Tests of 2021 are already legendary. The Gabba saw India stage one of the greatest Test victories ever, chasing down 328 on the last day to break Australia's 32-year winning streak at the ground. At Lord's, Siraj himself shone with eight wickets as India scripted a thrilling comeback to beat England by 151 runs.

Though Edgbaston did not share the same thrilling conclusion, the scale of the victory and the series context are enough to give it a place in Siraj's top three. It was a match that was all about camaraderie, milestones, and the feeling of Indian dominance overseas, and for Siraj, that is more than enough to render it unforgettable.

Akash Deep's sister, Akhand Jyoti Singh, offered an emotional reaction to her brother's stellar performance at Edgbaston. The pacer donated his match-winning spell against England to Jyoti, who is currently fighting cancer. In an interview with Aajtak, Jyoti said she was happy, proud and also noted Akash’s hard work and effort since it has brought joy and happiness to the family when they need it most. She mentioned that his dedication and success on the field meant the world to her and uplifted everyone at home.

Jyoti also revealed that her cancer is at stage three and she requires at least six more months of treatment. She called Akash before the England series and told him not to lose sight of representing the country, and also not to worry too much about her health condition. Her words were a source of strength for Akash and he took that strength with him to the field. The heartwarming bond between the siblings has touched fans across the cricketing community.

"It is a matter of pride for India - he has taken 10 wickets. Before the England tour, we went to meet him at the airport. I told him, 'I’m absolutely fine, don’t worry about me, just do well for the country.' I am in the third stage (of cancer), and the doctor has said the treatment will go on for six more months, after which we’ll see. It makes me very happy when Akash takes wickets. Whenever he gets a wicket, all of us start clapping and cheering so loudly that the neighbours in the colony ask what has happened!," Akash Deep's sister said in an exclusive interview to India Today.

He would come meet me in hospital: Akhand Jyoti

During the 2025 Indian Premier League season, Akash Deep’s sister, Akhand Jyoti Singh, was admitted to the hospital for cancer treatment. Despite his demanding schedule with the Lucknow Super Giants, Akash made it a priority to visit her regularly and support her through the tough times. Jyoti shared that her brother’s presence brought her comfort, even as he balanced professional commitments. Akash featured in six matches during the season, managing to pick up three wickets while juggling cricket and his sister’s health battle.

“When the IPL was going on and he was playing for the Lucknow team, I was admitted to the hospital for cancer treatment. Even then, he would come meet me either before or after the matches,” Akash Deep's sister said.

Akash Deep's sister revealed that she broke into tears after speaking to him on a video call following India’s historic first-ever Test win at Edgbaston. She shared that they had spoken twice on video call and once again at 5 a.m. the next morning. During their conversation, Akash reassured her not to worry, saying that the entire country stood with them. He also admitted that he could no longer hold back his emotions and had finally let them out after the match.

She expressed how emotional and proud she felt during their interaction, calling her brother a rare gem. She added that Akash always keeps the family involved in every decision and constantly offers his support. With their father and eldest brother no longer alive, Akash has taken over the responsibility of managing the household. His success on the field, despite personal challenges, has brought strength and pride to the entire family.

“After the match ended, we spoke twice over video call, and again at 5 a.m. in the morning. Akash told me, ‘Don’t worry, the whole country is with us.’ He said, ‘I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I had been trying to, but yesterday I just couldn’t stop myself. Such a brother is rare. He helps us a lot and doesn’t do anything without talking to us. He shares everything with the family. Since our father and eldest brother are no longer with us, he is the one now managing the whole household,” she added.

Shubman Gill was brimming with confidence after leading India to a historic Test victory at Edgbaston, Birmingham, the team's first-ever win at the venue. India had previously lost seven and drawn one of their eight Tests at the iconic ground, making this 336-run win even more special. Gill played a captain’s knock in both innings, scoring 269 and 161, setting the tone for the memorable result.

After the win, during the post-match press conference, Shubman lightheartedly looked around the media room, searching for a particular face. “I can't see my favorite journalist. Where is he? I wanted to see him,” he said with a smile. The journalist had reminded him before the match about India’s poor record at Edgbaston, something Gill clearly used as motivation.

The young skipper reiterated that he doesn't believe in history or statistics. Instead, he spoke with belief and pride about the team’s potential. “I even said before the Test match that I don't really believe in history and stats. Over the last 56 years or so, we've played nine matches; different teams have come here. I believe we are the best team to have come here to England, and we have the capability to beat them, to win the series from here,” he said confidently.

"This Indian Team Is One of the Best to Tour England."

Shubman went on to praise the balance and strength of his side, especially the bowling attack. “I think I said this before the match as well: this Indian team is one of the best to have toured England. The best 16 are chosen to play for the country,” he added.

He also stressed that India’s bowling unit can take 20 wickets, with or without star pacer Jasprit Bumrah. “I believe all our bowlers have the ability to chip in at any time and help us take 20 wickets. Definitely, Jasprit bhai is one of the best bowlers in the world. But regardless of that, any bowling unit of ours can take 20 wickets anywhere, and this was an example of that.” The five-match series is currently tied 1-1, with the third Test set to begin at Lord’s on Thursday, July 10.

Australia captain Pat Cummins took a cheeky dig at the flat pitches being used in the ongoing India vs. England Test series. In the first two games of the five-match series, only one team has been bowled out for under 300, with batters largely dominating proceedings. In contrast, Australia's tour of the Caribbean has been a bowler’s paradise, with fiery pitches offering plenty of assistance. Australia bowled out West Indies for just 143 in Grenada to seal a 2-0 series win, with only one total above 300 across the series.

Cummins, speaking after the 133-run victory in Grenada, admitted he hadn't been watching much of the India-England series but didn't hold back in his assessment. "I wasn't (watching India vs. England); probably Marnus (Labuschagne) was, we'll keep an eye on it.
Who'd want to be a bowler over there?" Cummins said, poking fun at the lifeless surfaces. "Looking at Test cricket this week over here compared to that, it looks like two different sports. It looks like it is going to be a good series, 1-1 now."

The Edgbaston pitch, in particular, has come under scrutiny. It was even labelled a "subcontinent pitch" by England skipper Ben Stokes after his side lost seven wickets on the final day to allow India to level the series. The flat nature of the surface has made life difficult for the bowlers, drawing criticism from several quarters.

Shubman Gill Wants Better Balance Between Bat and Ball

India’s captain Shubman Gill also expressed his frustration over the lack of support for bowlers. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Gill pointed out how hard his bowlers had to work just to get any help from the surface. “It gets very difficult for the bowlers. Even more than the wicket, the ball is going soft and out of shape very quickly. I don't know what it is—weather, wickets, or whatever—but it gets very difficult for the bowlers to get wickets in these conditions,” he said.

He further added, “I think there should be a little help at least. If the ball is doing something, you enjoy playing. If you know there are only 20 overs of any help and then you have to spend the rest of the day on the defensive, thinking how to stop runs, then the game loses its essence.” With the ENG vs. IND series now level at 1-1, the all-important third Test will be played at Lord’s from Thursday, July 10.

India’s thumping 336-run win over England at Edgbaston has made a strong statement, with former England spinner Monty Panesar saying that the visitors have shown they are not afraid of England’s aggressive ‘Bazball’ approach. This victory was not only India’s first-ever Test win at Edgbaston but also their biggest away win in terms of runs. With the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series now level at 1-1, India will head into the third Test at Lord’s with great momentum.

Speaking to IANS, Panesar said, “India will gain a lot of confidence from this. It shows they're not afraid of England's Bazball approach. There's a great deal of excitement and belief in the team. Shubman Gill has shown exceptional leadership; also, he has batted really well.” India was under pressure after a five-wicket loss in Leeds and entered the game without Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav. But Akash Deep stepped up in a big way to fill the gap.

The fast bowler produced a remarkable spell on a flat pitch, taking 10 wickets in the match to become only the second Indian bowler after Chetan Sharma to claim a ten-wicket haul in England. He got great support from Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Jadeja, and Washington Sundar, who each chipped in with a wicket in England’s second innings.

Shubman Gill's Captaincy and Akash Deep's Brilliance Stand Out

The win was also a big personal achievement for Shubman Gill, who led the team to victory in his first Test as captain. With scores of 269 and 161, Gill ended the match with 430 runs—the second-highest in Test history behind Graham Gooch’s 456, which also came against India in 1990.

Panesar praised India’s bowling unit for taking all 20 wickets, saying it’s a big achievement. He added, “They've found a solid bowling combination, and with Jasprit Bumrah likely to return for the next match, the bowling attack will only get stronger. Akash Deep has an excellent average with the new ball. He's a genuine new-ball bowler, and he bowled really well—a remarkable comeback for him.”

Panesar also highlighted England’s problems, especially the performance of Shoaib Bashir, who gave away 286 runs in the match. “It’s troubling for England that their spinner can’t even deliver maiden overs consistently,” he said. The two teams now move to London for the third Test at Lord’s starting July 10, with the series finely balanced.

A dream bowling spell in England for Akash Deep. A 10-wicket figure for the pacer. After taking 4 wickets in the 2nd Test at Edgbaston, which is known as the fortress of the England cricket team, the Indian seamer claimed another 6 in the second Test to complete his 10-wicket haul in the Whites.

England cricket fans, famously known for their love for Test cricket, celebrating the achievement of the rival team bowler. After the conclusion of the match, where Shubman Gill and Co. outclassed the home team by a 336-run margin, crazy scenes were captured outside the stadium.

A cricket fan in England created and sang a song to pay tribute to the 10-wicket achiever Akash Deep. The song, "Akash Deep, Akash Deep, Akash Deep, Akash Deep, Bowling England Out Akash Deep," attracted attention from cricket fans across the social media platforms.

India set a near impossible target for England to get a win in the second Test match. The creator of Bazball was forced to play with a defensive mindset, at least to end the match in a draw. But, when a bowler like Akash Deep was in fiery form, the mammoth 608-run target looked even bigger to hold. The fast bowler took the wickets of Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith, and Brydon Carse in the second essay to complete his 10-wicket mark.

Gavaskar Calypso

The song outside Edgbaston remembered another historical achievement of India. When India, led by Ajit Wadekar, won a Test series against the mighty West Indies back in 1971, a track was invented. The song was inspired by Sunil Gavaskar's iconic 117 not-out knock. The song, titled 'Gavaskar Calypso,' was written and sung by Trinidadian calypso artist Lord Relator (Willard Harris).

Akash Deep's fiery spell of fast bowling was the most significant of several notable performances in India's decisive 336-run victory over England in the second Test at Edgbaston. The 28-year-old pacer, who was playing in just his second Test match, finished with career-best figures of 6 for 99 and a ten-wicket match haul after rattling England's batting with unrelenting accuracy.

Among those impressed was England captain Ben Stokes, who didn’t hold back in acknowledging Deep’s skill after the match. “Akash Deep used his angles well and was very accurate. He was zoning in on that crack. Very skillful,” Stokes said at the post-match press conference.

The right-arm seamer exploited the surface expertly on Day 5, dismantling England’s top order in a decisive morning spell. He dismissed Ollie Pope with a sharp delivery that ricocheted onto the stumps, then trapped Harry Brook lbw with a vicious nip-backer both within the first five overs of the day.

India’s clinical performance helped them secure their first-ever Test win at Edgbaston and level the five-match series 1-1. Deep’s contributions came in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for the game, making the effort even more impressive. “Akash bowled with so much heart,” said India captain Shubman Gill, who was named Player of the Match for scores of 269 and 161. “He hit the right lengths, moved the ball both ways and was magnificent for us.

Stokes also reflected on key moments that hurt England’s chances. “We had them at 200-5 in the first innings and just couldn’t finish them off. That was a turning point.” With Bumrah returning for the third Test and Deep now firmly in the mix, India’s pace attack looks formidable heading into Lord’s, where the series will resume on July 10 For now, though, it’s Akash Deep who walks away with the headlines and the respect of one of the game’s top leaders.

ENG vs IND 2nd Test final result:

  • IND: 587 and 427/6d
  • ENG: 407 and 271
  • India won the match by 336 runs.

What a stunning performance by Team India. Shubman Gill and his boys hoisted the victory flag on the fortress of the England cricket team's fortress, Edgbaston. After winning the second Test, the Blue Brigade squares the ongoing 5-match series 1-1. India won the second match by a 336-run margin.

India pacer Akash Deep was at the peak of his form and claimed a total of 10 wickets in the match. It was a rare achievement by an Indian pacer in a Test match in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). After taking 4 wickets in the first innings, the seamer claimed 6 in the next phase of the game.

England was under huge pressure as they had to chase a target of 608 runs to win the contest. If they were able to hold their wickets in the crease, then they could've ended the match with a draw. But India was in a mood to clinch the match, especially after a record-breaking 269-run knock by the skipper Shubman Gill, followed by another ton in the second innings. Gill's captain's knock was well complemented by the bowling department. Akash took a total of 10, and Mohammed Siraj bagged a total of 7 scalps, including a 6-wicket spell in the first essay.

Key factors:

  • Team India's huge lead
  • Steller performance from captain Shubman Gill
  • Historic spell by Akash Deep

England started Day 5 with 7 wickets in hand after a heavy rain spell in Birmingham. Akash Deep did not take too much time to dispatch Ollie and drew the first blood of the morning. Within minutes after the departure of Pope, Akash, this time, took on Harry Brook, another set batsman. Jamie Smith tried to pull out an incredible knock, but he couldn't overcome the barrier set by Akash and lost his wicket for 88.

Indian captain Shubman Gill has all but confirmed that ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah will be back in the playing XI for the third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series against England. After India’s dominant 336-run win in the second Test at Edgbaston, which leveled the series 1-1, Gill was asked about Bumrah’s availability for the Lord’s Test, and his answer was both short and significant. "Definitely," Gill replied with a smile, sending a strong signal that the team’s premier fast bowler is set to return.

Bumrah was rested for the second Test as part of workload management after playing the series opener. In his absence, debutant Akash Deep made the most of the opportunity, delivering a sensational performance with match figures of 10 for 167, including 6-99 in the second innings. His fiery spells, particularly on a batting-friendly Edgbaston pitch, were key to India’s first-ever Test win at the venue.

Gill Confirms Bumrah’s Return as India Gears Up for Crucial Third Test at Lord’s

Reflecting on India’s turnaround after the Leeds heartbreak, Gill credited the bowling and fielding unit. “We knew if we got 400-500 on this kind of wicket, we’d be in the game. Our bowling and fielding were tremendous,” he said. He also praised Akash Deep, saying, “He bowled with heart, hit the right areas, and moved the ball both ways not easy on this surface.”

With Bumrah expected to return and Akash Deep’s emergence, India suddenly finds itself with a rich pace arsenal heading into the third Test at Lord’s. Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Ravindra Jadeja also played supporting roles in the second Test win, while Gill starred with the bat, scoring a historic 269 and 161 in the two innings.

With confidence, form, and the probable return of their pace spearhead, India is now carrying momentum into the third Test. With both teams level and the pressure building, all eyes will be on Lord's when the series resumes.
