Former South African cricket captain Faf du Plessis has expressed his grief and shock following the tragic death of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The 31-year-old co-founder of Turning Point USA was shot dead while speaking at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University in Orem. Nearly 3,000 people were in attendance when the incident occurred, sending the gathering into chaos.

According to authorities, Kirk was struck in the neck by a single bullet fired from a rooftop some distance away. The shooting took place while he was answering questions under a tent as part of his American Comeback Tour. The crowd quickly descended into panic, with many fleeing the venue, while others ducked for cover amid the confusion.

News of Kirk's assassination travelled fast and a storm of outrage and grief meant that condolences and condemnation were coming in from America, Europe and Africa as public figures and world leaders reacted quickly and vocally to an abhorrent act of violence.

Faf du Plessis’ Strong Words on Gun Laws

Among those who responded was Faf du Plessis, who took to social media with a short but powerful message. He condoled Kirk’s death and questioned America’s gun culture, wondering why firearm access is so easy in the country. “RIP Charlie Kirk. I’ll never understand America and why everyone can just have a gun.🙏,” the former cricketer tweeted, sparking widespread discussion.

Meanwhile, authorities continue to investigate the assassination. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that a suspect initially detained was later released, leaving the case open. U.S. President Donald Trump also mourned Kirk, calling him a “great and even legendary” figure while vowing that those behind the attack would face justice.

Johannesburg Super Kings, under the leadership of Faf du Plessis, finished in the fourth position in the points table of the 2024/25 season of the SA20 as they earned four victories in 10 encounters at a net run rate of -0.330. They lost the eliminator against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape at the SuperSport Park in Centurion by 32 runs to be eliminated from the event.

Super Kings came into the auction with R21.5 million (INR 10.72 crore) as they had 14 slots remaining to get ahead of the new season, among which they had four overseas and two Under-23 slots available. They started the opening bidding for the upcoming right-handed superstar batter, Dewald Brevis, and stretched it to R16 million before backing out.

Super Kings’ first successfully signed player of the evening was the international all-rounder, Wiaan Mulder, who was sold to the Wanderers side for R9 million as Durban Super Giants decided to go against exercising their RTM.

The left-arm fast bowler of the side, Nandre Burger, was up for R2 million as there was an intense bidding between Johannesburg and Pretoria Capitals. But Durban made their presence in the bidding and bagged the pacer for R6.1 million. JSK used the right to match card to retain their pace bowler for R6.3 million. Late in the evening, they also got back their veteran leg spinner, Imran Tahir, but had to leave out Gerald Coetzee and David Wiese.

They lost the services of Jonny Bairstow from the previous season, which pushed them to buy Brandon King and Rilee Rossouw as the two opening options with pre-signed James Vince. Reece Tropley could perhaps be the replacement for Burger if the latter picks up an injury. Donovan Ferreira is already part of the wild-card entry.

<![CDATA[Three players who can replace Axar Patel as DC captain ahead of IPL 2026]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-stats/three-players-who-can-replace-axar-patel-as-dc-captain-ahead-of-ipl-2026/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-stats/three-players-who-can-replace-axar-patel-as-dc-captain-ahead-of-ipl-2026/ Sun, 31 Aug 2025 11:44:54 GMT

The internet has been buzzing with the news of Axar Patel, who is likely to be sacked as the captain of the Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Although the franchise has shown signs of retaining the spin bowling all-rounder, the possibility of him continuing as the DC skipper appears slim.

In such a scenario, the Delhi-based outfit may be compelled to explore alternative captaincy options in the form of Faf du Plessis, KL Rahul, and Tristan Stubbs. In this article, we will look at the top three captaincy candidates who are likely to fill Axar's shoes ahead of the next IPL season.

Faf du Plessis

The veteran Proteas batter has a wealth of experience in competing in various franchise leagues around the world. In addition, the 41-year-old has led several notable franchises to success. He was appointed as RCB's skipper in 2022 and captained them for two years before stepping down. Under him, the Bangalore-based outfit made it to the 2024 playoffs. Elsewhere outside the IPL, Faf also endured a successful stint in the CPL by taking St Lucia Kings to their maiden CPL title win in 2024. Apart from CPL, the South African veteran also experienced a stellar run in MLC 2025. Leading the Texas Super Kings, Faf powdered the opposition with multiple centuries and took his side to a commanding position in the league.

Add to that, the South African southpaw has also captained the Proteas at the international level, leading his side in all three formats. Earlier in the IPL 2024 season, Faf served as a deputy to Axar. Faf's experience will be quite invaluable, and being the vice-captain of the team, he looks like the strongest contender to become the next captain of the Delhi Capitals ahead of the upcoming IPL season.

KL Rahul

Indian all-format specialist batter KL Rahul is another formidable cricketing personality who can take over the captaincy baton from Axar ahead of the 19th IPL edition. Rahul is blessed with some strong captaincy credentials at his disposal. The Bangalore-based batter has so far captained two IPL franchises to this day—PBKS & LSG. His captaincy journey in the IPL began in 2020 with PBKS. Though PBKS struggled to make it to the top four, Rahul did not allow the burden of captaincy to affect his natural game. He finished the 2020 season as the highest run scorer with 670 runs to his name and slammed his best score of 132*, which was, at that time, the highest by an Indian in the IPL.

Then, in 2022, he switched his allegiance to LSG. Although he was ruled out midway through the 2023 season, Rahul was able to make a comeback a year later. However, LSG failed to deliver a promising performance under his leadership and crashed out prematurely from IPL 2024. Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of LSG, was visibly vexed to see the results, and Rahul was eventually sidelined from the squad ahead of IPL 2025. Although at first, Rahul declined to take over DC's captaincy ahead of the 2025 season, experts suggest he could change his mind as the next season looms large.

Tristan Stubbs

Tristan Stubbs, unlike his earlier predecessors, has age on his side. The South African batting all-rounder is currently in the midst of navigating the early phase of his IPL career. Although Stubbs has no credible captaincy experience under his belt, he is well known for being a key performer and a highly versatile player. Moreover, the Delhi Capitals assistant coach even went as far as describing him as a “player for the next five years”, thereby underscoring his growing importance to the team. His adaptability, backing himself in high-pressure moments, and tactical awareness have drawn praise, though always as a player and not as a leader.

At age 25, and with growing visibility, leadership opportunities might not be far off if he continues on this trajectory. The combination of explosive batting, athleticism, and significant on-field contributions that he consistently showcases during crucial moments of a match may entice the DC management to move away from seasoned players and invest in the promising young all-rounder.

<![CDATA[Watch: Mankad out in MLC 2025? Former MI Player warns Ex-CSK player]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/watch-mankad-out-in-mlc-2025-former-mi-player-warns-ex-csk-player/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/watch-mankad-out-in-mlc-2025-former-mi-player-warns-ex-csk-player/ Sat, 12 Jul 2025 09:36:08 GMT

Mankad dismissals have always been a talking point in the game for the last few years, especially in the shortest format of the game. Since Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Jos Buttler during the IPL 2018 clash between Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings, it has taken a new route in the game. In MLC 2025, two former CSK and MI players got engaged in the same fashion.

It was the second qualifier contest between the Texas Super Kings and the MI New York at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, where both teams were fighting hard to get themselves into the final spot. Mumbai came behind the points table and displayed some crazy performances towards the end of the season to get themselves in that scenario.

The incident happened on the third ball of the eighth over in the first innings. Kieron Pollard, the former MI player, was about to deliver his ball. But on his run-up, he stopped before delivering the ball and gave a warning to the Texas captain, Faf du Plessis, who was coming out of his crease.

Watch; Kieron Pollard warns Faf du Plessis of a Mankad dismissal in MLC 2025

Faf was not taking any benefit of the game, given that he was always going to come out of the crease with the momentum of the bowler delivering the ball. But Pollard, the former West Indies, alerted him perhaps to break his rhythm in the contest. And it worked as the batter eventually got dismissed four overs later for 59 runs in 42 balls.

Winning the toss, the New York captain, Nicholas Pooran decided to bowl first on a surface which helps the batting in the second innings under the lights. Apart from du Plessis, no one got the momentum in the batting order. At one point, they were 85/5 in the 13th over, before Akeal Hosein smashed a fine 55 runs in just 32 balls, besides Donovan Ferreira’s 32 unbeaten runs in 20 balls to take them to 166/5 in their 20 overs.

Mumbai was in the chase from the beginning. Monark Patel drilled 49 runs in 39 balls, while the match turning point was the undefeated 89-run stand between Pollard, who smashed 47 unbeaten runs in 22 balls, and the captain Pooran, who nailed 52* runs in just 36 balls. MI will now face the Washington Freedom in the final of the MLC 2025 on July 14.
