Jemimah Rodrigues (captain of Delhi Capitals) received an INR 12 lakh fine due to a slow-over rate violation following her team's 2026 WPL match vs. Gujarat Giants. As a result of failing to complete their overs in a timely manner, the league held her responsible for the infraction.

It was quite a tense match; the Gujarat Giants scored 174 in the allotted 20 overs and thus finished with a total of 9 runs. The highlights were a cool-headed 58 runs scored by Australian Beth Mooney off 46 balls, and additional runs were provided by Anushka Sharma, who scored 39 off 28. On behalf of Delhi Capitals, the mighty Sree Charani was able to wreak havoc with his impressive bowling, with 4 wickets taken for 31 runs. Leading the charge with a 70-run partnership were Niki Prasad (47 not out) and Sneh Rana (29 not out); however, the Delhi Capitals found themselves needing to score on the last ball of the game in order to win the match.

In the end, Delhi fell just three runs short of victory, thanks to two extraordinary performances by Sophie Devine and Rajeshwari Gayakwad. Devine took 4 wickets for 37 runs, while Rajeshwari Gayakwad added 3 wickets for 20 runs, securing victory for the Gujarat Giants in the final over of play. With this victory over Delhi, the Gujarat Giants moved into second position on the WPL 2026 standings, and Delhi will look to regroup before playing their next match.

Over-Rate Penalty Overshadows Delhi’s Hard-Fought Battle

Gujarat Giants were well prepared for the challenges they faced with their lineup consisting of players with the ability to play at the highest level. During the final overs of the match, the Giants managed to stop the Capitals from getting close to their run total, as all four of their players took individual responsibility for the match, with each of them making a meaningful contribution. While many teams are just starting to find their rhythm, the Giants' performance showcased how advanced the formation of their players is.

Despite their problems in this match, the Capitals are looking forward to a fresh start against UP Warriorz in Vadodara on February 1st. The Capitals have been without their star players in this series, so this match may be a good opportunity for them to regain some confidence and make a return to the upper tier of the WPL 2026 points table for the remainder of the series.

While WPL 2026 is less than a week away to begin, Gujarat Giants have appointed a new fielding coach, who was a legend for England Women.

WPL 2026: Sarah Taylor becomes new fielding coach for Gujarat Giants

The 36-year-old former English wicketkeeper-batter Sarah Taylor has been appointed as the new fielding coach for the Gujarat Giants for the WPL 2026.

Before the beginning of the fourth season of the Women's Premier League, Gujarat Giants' coaching staff seems very promising, as Michael Klinger is the head coach, Pravin Tambe is the bowling coach, and Saurabh Walker is the analyst.

Sarah Taylor was known as one of the best wicketkeepers in international cricket history, as her wicketkeeping style was also compared with top men's international wicketkeepers.

From 2006 to 2019, Sarah played 10 Women's Tests, 126 Women's ODIs, and 90 Women's T20Is. The right-handed batter scored 300 Women's Test runs, 4056 Women's ODI runs, and 2177 Women's T20I runs. While she recorded seven centuries and 20 half-centuries in WODI career, she also recorded 16 half-centuries in WT20I career.

Sarah Taylor coaching career

After retiring from professional cricket in 2019, Sarah has become busy with coaching. She was the wicketkeeping coach of the Sussex men's cricket team, while she also returned to the game by featuring in the Women's Hundred 2021 and Women's T20 Cup 2021.

Later, Sarah became the assistant coach for Team Abu Dhabi and Manchester Originals (both men's and women's). She was also the wicketkeeping coach for England Lions during their South Africa tour in 2024.

The WPL 2026 will run between January 9 and February 5, 2026, while Gujarat Giants will play their first match of the season on January 10, when they will face UP Warriorz in the second game of the tournament. After finishing in the last or fifth positions in the first two seasons, they reached the Playoffs last season after finishing in the third position in the points table, as they lost the Eliminator against Mumbai Indians.

<![CDATA[Gujarat Giants SWOT Analysis for WPL 2026: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/gujarat-giants-swot-analysis-for-wpl-2026-strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/gujarat-giants-swot-analysis-for-wpl-2026-strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats/ Thu, 01 Jan 2026 15:46:38 GMT

The Gujarat Giants are entering the WPL 2026 season with a clearly delineated strategy that relies on creating a team around elite international players, hoping that their combined experience will be enough to propel the Giants deep into the tournament. With Ashleigh Gardner, Beth Mooney, Sophie Devine and Georgia Wareham, the Giants have assembled the most expensive overseas group of players in WPL history, providing them with amazing star power.

However, there remain questions about the depth of the Giants' Indian batting line-up and how balanced their overall squad is. This SWOT analysis takes a closer look at whether the Overseas-first approach taken by the Gujarat Giants can finally produce the level of success that the team has long sought. Let us look SWOT analysis;

Strengths

While the Gujarat Giants have assembled a world-class overseas core, perhaps their strongest asset is their very strong overseas players. The contributions to the team from Ashleigh Gardner and Beth Mooney can both carry a match for the team; Gardner has shown himself to be a tremendous power hitter and Mooney has proven to be one of the most consistent players in the WPL from the very start. The addition of Sophie Devine to this mix makes the overseas core even more powerful and gives the Giants a very strong top three that can chase down any score in the league.

The value of Devine goes well beyond her batting. While 2025 was certainly not the best year for her, she is still a reliable 4 over option and a natural leader. She makes for a "set and forget" captaincy option when planning tactically (across multiple formats) and in regard to Fantasy Cricket. With Georgia Wareham providing additional balance, due to her leg-spin and finishing skills, GG have enough flexibility throughout all conditions to allow the team to maintain this strength. The combination of the experience and match-winning potential of the entire overseas group gives Gujarat Giants a unique advantage.

Weaknesses

Although Gujarat Giants have a large number of star overseas players, they are at risk due to a lack of Indian batting depth. Of the Indian batters, other than Bharti Fulmali and Kanika Ahuja, very few have had any consistent exposure at the highest level of the game. Yastika Bhatia is likely unavailable due to injury. This further reduces the strength of the domestic core and adds additional pressure to the overseas batters, who will need to perform in every match.

The Indian fast-bowling unit is also of concern, as Renuka Singh is the only proven bowler; the rest of the pace bowlers are largely untested and very promising, but inexperienced. In high-scoring matches, this lack of identified/proven Indian support could lead to excessive reliance on the overseas stars of GG.

Opportunities

Gujarat Giants' young Indian talent could use WPL 2026 as a platform to showcase their skills at the highest level. For instance, if given the opportunity and communication about his position in the batting order, Bharti Fulmali may establish himself as a long-term option for a top-order batting position. Furthermore, young bowlers such as Titas Sadhu and Kashvee Gautam have shown potential. If properly developed over time, they may become long-term assets to the franchise.

The next area of opportunity for Gujarat Giants is the ability to take advantage of playing conditions in India. If Renuka Singh, who was acquired at a bargain price, has the ability to move the ball early in her spell at venues such as Vadodara or Navi Mumbai, she could be highly effective if given proper support throughout her spell. Therefore, if Gujarat Giants can maximise her early wickets, while also supporting her with a well-rounded bowling attack, they may exceed expectations with their bowling unit.

Threats

The largest risk for Gujarat Giants would be to depend too heavily on their overseas players. If one or both of Gardner, Mooney, or Devine become injured or out of form, the team could struggle to fill the void. Opposing teams will most likely attack GG's Indian batsmen and force them into high-pressure situations. Finally, the Giants have historically been inconsistent in their performance.

While they may have an array of talented players on paper, if they cannot generate enough early momentum, their chances for success are significantly diminished. It will be imperative for GG to balance the expectations surrounding their star players and create an atmosphere that fosters team unity.

Conclusion

The Gujarat Giants are entering the Women’s Premier League (WPL) for 2026 with an arguably the strongest overseas contingent in the tournament. With that said, the team's success largely hinges upon whether or not their domestic WPL players are able to support each other and relieve some of the pressure off of their global players, so that they continue to perform at their best. If young Indian talent can break into the team and support Renuka Singh as the lead bowler, Gujarat Giants could potentially be strong contenders for a playoff berth, and possibly have an opportunity to advance even further.

Australia’s all-rounder, Ashleigh Garner, has been appointed as the new leader for the Gujarat Ginats ahead of the upcoming edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), as the franchise declared on December 29. The 28-year-old has featured in 25 games for the franchise, having earned decent success with the bat.

Ashleigh Gardner has overall smashed 567 runs in 25 innings of the WPL at an average of over 30 and a strike rate of 141.75 with the help of five half-centuries at the best score of unbeaten 79 runs. In the previous edition of the event, the right-handed batter nailed 243 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 164.18 with three fifties. With the ball, he bagged eight wickets in nine innings at an economy rate of just over eight.

Gadner is a special player for Australia, having experienced an enormous success with the bat in the 50-over format as he clubbed 1654 ODI runs in 62 innings at an average of 33.08 and a strike rate of 111 with the help of three centuries and eight half-centuries at the best score of 115 runs.

Gujarat Giants appoint Ashleigh Gardner as new captain for WPL 2026

Gardner is one of the two players to be retained by the franchise for a price of INR 3.5 crore, while the opening batter, Beth Mooney, was also kept by the side for a price of INR 2.5 crore. The Giants expressed on social media, “Experience in her stride. Belief in her voice. Ash Gardner steps up once more as our CAPTAIN, primed to take us to glory.”

Gardner has been a three-time T20 Women’s World Cup winner and has been with the franchise since its inception in 2023. She helped the team to finish in third position in the previous edition, losing to eventual champion Mumbai Indians by 47 runs. They will hope for a better campaign next year.

The fourth edition of the WPL will be played across two legs, in Navi Mumbai and Vadodara, with the opening match set to be played at the D.Y. Patil Stadium. The Giants will start their journey against UP Warriorz in Navi Mumbai on January 10.

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 is going to kick off on January 9, and the first match will feature the current titleholders Mumbai Indians against the previous winners Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The tournament that lasts for 28 days will end on February 5, with the final taking place on a weekday for the first time at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.

This year’s edition is full of firsts including a January–February window instead of the traditional February–March slot, which the league takes to avoid clashes with major international cricket events. The two-venue format is back, with Navi Mumbai having the first 11 matches including two Saturday double-headers, after which the final 11 league games and the playoffs will be at Vadodara.

Mumbai Indians are the most successful team by far in the league's short history, having won two titles in three seasons, and are entering WPL 2026 as the defending champions. RCB are the only other winners, while Delhi Capitals can lay claim to the unique (and unwanted) record of being also-rans in all three seasons. Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz are still whispering their dreams aloud for a maiden finals appearance.

After the final on February 5, India's women cricketers will directly head out for a full-fledged tour of Australia starting on February 15.

Gujarat Giants (GG), semifinalist of the previous Women's Premier League (WPL), steal most of the limelight in the auction room, which was held on the afternoon of November 27. GG has the reputation of putting up the paddle aggressively; he did the same during the WPL 2026 auction.

The Gujarat-based franchise came into the auction with only two retained players—Ashleigh Gardner and Beth Mooney—and a hefty moneybag. They did not hesitate to invest Rs 2.00 crore for the explosive batter Sophie Devine, which made their intention clear during the initial stage of the auction. Gujarat Giants franchise officials were there to reshape their squad, and they did that with precision.

After the auction, their squad on paper looks well-balanced and a serious contender for the upcoming title. The team management created the new-look setup with a blend of internationally reputed players and domestic talents. Bharti Fulmali (Rs 70 lakh), multi-talented all-rounder Kashvee Gautam (Rs 65 lakh), and India’s pace hope Renuka Singh (Rs 60 lakh) were some of their smart domestic picks.

The BCCI is expected to hold the WPL 2026 mega auction at the end of November. The Women’s Premier League, which started two years ago, has never had a mega auction before. Franchises have been informally informed about the board’s plan for this year.

WPL 2026: Mega Auction Likely in November as Teams Plan Retentions

The five WPL teams Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, and Gujarat Giants are waiting for details such as how many players they can retain, whether the Right to Match (RTM) rule will be used, the auction budget, and other rules. These decisions will be finalized in the upcoming WPL committee meeting.

The third season of the WPL is expected to start from January-February 2026, though exact dates are not confirmed yet. RCB, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals are reportedly not in favor of the mega auction. They feel breaking up teams that took years to build could hurt the league.

On the other hand, Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz want to refresh their squads and support the idea of a mega auction. A WPL official said it’s important for all teams to stay competitive, and each team will likely be allowed to retain up to five key players. RCB captain Smriti Mandhana, who was the first player bought in the 2023 WPL auction, remains the most expensive player at ₹3.2 crore (around $415,000).

The match starts at 7:30 PM IST, in a potential playoff match-up, as we have GT under the captaincy of Shubman Gill playing SRH under the captaincy of Pat Cummins!

Weather & Pitch Report

Ahmedabad's weather on May 2, 2025, will likely be warm, with temperatures between 33–37°C (91–99°F) and humidity around 50–60% in the evening. The pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium could possibly be a good batting surface in the beginning but may assist spinners as the match moves out of the powerplay phase. Dew could also be a factor in the second innings, potentially making the batting conditions easier for the chasing side.

GT vs SRH: Match Preview

The Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, just won their last match, Match 19 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, by 7 wickets, thanks to wickets from Mohammed Siraj (4/17) and a score of 61* from Gill. In total, GT has 6 wins from their 9 matches to date and is reliant on their batters (Sai Sudharsan, Jos Buttler, and Shubman Gill) and their bowling (Rashid Khan, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna) being suited to the conditions in Ahmedabad. In their return match, Pat Cummins is leading Sunrisers Hyderabad on a tough stretch, with 3 wins from 9 matches. SRH relied on players Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Heinrich Klaasen for runs, and Harshal Patel and Shami led a dangerous bowling group. SRH’s recent form is shaky, but their desire for retribution could make this a tight contest against GT’s home advantage.
