Sri Lanka Women won their maiden match of the 2025 ICC Women's World Cup with a seven-run victory over Bangladesh Women during Match 21 at the DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai. Full of drama, the match saw captain Chamari Athapaththu take charge from the front with both her bat and ball, steering her team to the narrow victory. The game became a nail-biting finish as Bangladesh, though dominant for the better part of the chase, spectacularly collapsed in the last overs.

Electing to bat first, Sri Lanka lost opener Vishmi Gunaratne on the very first ball to Marufa Akter, putting pressure on their innings early on. Chamari Athapaththu (46 from 43) and Hasini Perera (85), however, rescued the innings with a 72-run partnership, which was pivotal in placing the innings in good stead. Together, they provided a strong platform to Sri Lanka, but once they were dismissed, the middle order was unable to keep the momentum going. The team, which had been cruising at 155-4, were bowled out for 202 off 48.4 overs eventually. Shorna Akter was the star for Bangladesh with 3-27, while Rabeya Khan and Marufa Akter got important wickets.

In reply, Bangladesh's chase began on a poor note as they stumbled to 44-3 in 16 overs. But skipper Nigar Sultana Joty (77 off 98) and Sharmin Akhter (53) stemmed the flow and pulled the innings back with patience and discipline. Their stand placed Bangladesh in a commanding position at 176-3 with only 27 runs from the last 30 balls required for victory. But Sri Lanka's bowlers, led by Chamari Athapaththu, again flip the match dramatically towards the end to record a thrilling victory. Below are the top reasons for the Bangladesh Women defeat:

1. Collapse of Batting in the End

Bangladesh was sailing toward victory before collapsing to five wickets in eight balls. They went from 176-3 to 195-9, unable to cope with increasing pressure. The batters lost focus in the final moments of the inning which allowed Sri Lanka to reinforce their position in the game. The collapse was ultimately the biggest reason Bangladesh lost in a heartbreaking defeat.

2. Poor Start to the Top Order

Bangladesh's top order struggled to create momentum at the start of the innings, with Rubya Haider going for a duck and Sobhana Mostary just adding eight runs. After 24 runs during the Powerplay, Bangladesh were quickly put on the back foot. With a lack of early partnerships, there was a lot of work for the middle order to do.

3. Nigar Sultana's Injury Issues

Captain Nigar Sultana Joty's hamstring pull was a huge setback for Bangladesh. While she could manage only a gritty knock of 77, her restricted movement spoiled her run and shot choice towards the last overs. Her wicket was at a timing when Sri Lanka could capitalize on it, and once she was dismissed, Bangladesh's chase lost direction, handing Sri Lanka a deserving win.

Match summary

Northern Superchargers Women claimed the title of The Hundred Women’s Competition 2025, with a thoroughly convincing 7-wicket victory over Southern Brave Women at Lord’s. Batting first, Southern Brave found it difficult to build momentum at the crease and managed only 115/6 in 100 balls. With Sophie Devine (23 off 28), Freya Kemp (26 off 17), and Maia Bouchier (13 off 11) trying their best, their innings simply never really took off, particularly thanks to the pressure imposed by Northern Superchargers bowlers throughout, specifically Kate Cross (2/8) and Annabel Sutherland (1/23).

When it was time for the Superchargers to bat, they made light work of the chase. Opening bat, Phoebe Litchfield gave Northern Superchargers an explosive start, playing a thrilling innings of 26 off 13. Annabel Sutherland (28* off 25) and Nicola Carey (35* off 25) carried on from there, making sure their innings flowed courtesy of the controlled captaincy. Before we knew it, the target was chased down in just 88 balls with 7 wickets in hand, crowning them champions.

Southern Brave Women Innings – 115/6 (100 balls)

The batters for the Braves never really built a big partnership. A couple of reasonable middle-order cameos were not enough, as the Superchargers bowled very disciplined and kept the Brave quiet.

West Delhi Lions scored a comprehensive 8-wicket win over East Delhi Riders to qualify for the Delhi Premier League Final at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. East Delhi Riders set a target of 140 after batting first and finished on 139/8 in 20 overs, with only Arpit Rana’s (50 runs off 38 balls) effort putting up any significant runs on the board. Manan Bhardwaj (3/22) and Tishant Dabla (2/18) helped to make sure there was little chance for the Riders to put together anything near a competitive total.

The lions circled the target in a clinical but efficient chase. Captain Nitish Rana (45 off 26)* and Ayush Doseja (54 off 49)* controlled the innings and built the structure of the chase, never letting it be in doubt. Good early momentum from Krish Yadav (37 runs off 25 balls) saw the WDL comfortably achieve their target in 17.3 overs for a loss of only 2 wickets.

East Delhi Riders did not have great starts, as they were bowled out for just 90 runs in 14.5 overs, with Simarjeet Singh with a dazzling spell of 5 wickets providing no respite for the top and middle order batting line-up for the Riders. While Sujal Singh put up some resistance with a solid 39 runs, the rest of his batting order all failed to perform. Central Delhi Kings had a very comfortable chase and achieved 92/4 in only 11.3 overs with top scoring from Aditya Bhandari (33 runs off 19*) and captain Jonty Sidhu (26 off 15).

East Delhi Riders Innings - 90/10 (14.5 overs)

The Riders were totally beaten up at the start, losing their first three wickets in 6 runs. Capt. Welsh Fire Women Innings – 77/9 (100 Balls)

Facing a modest target of 107, Welsh Fire faltered from the very first ball and never recovered. Captain Tammy Beaumont top-scored for her side with 28 from 33 balls, but she could not gain any momentum, having only Sophia Dunkley (9) and Hayley Matthews (16) supporting her with any kind of effort. When the top three fell cheaply, the middle and lower order succumbed to pressure, with Lauren Bell picking them apart for a brilliant and deserved 4-wicket haul. Welsh Fire finished all out for 77/9, well short of Gauls of the season with plenty still to play for.
