The ICC Women's ODI World Cup begins with the India vs Sri Lanka match. Ahead of the match, when two teams were on the ground for the national anthem, it was Shreya Ghoshal who took the spotlight. 

The elite league of the International Cricket Council (ICC) commenced today at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. BCCI women shared a special video of Shreyas arriving in the dressing room of the Indian cricket team. Before the tournament opener clash, she visited the dressing room to motivate the players. India and Sri Lanka are the joint hosts of the tournament. The post, shared by BCCI Women's, captioned the photos and videos, "Starting our campaign with melodious vibes. When Shreya Ghoshal visited the #TeamIndia dressing room. 

Clips of her rehearsals and performances had already been shared before the grand entry into the stadium. Before the match, she paid a tribute to the late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg by singing 'Mayabini.'

But the main attraction came when she performed the national anthems of the two nations—India and Sri Lanka. When she visited the India dressing room, she was in a brown tracksuit. But when she stepped into the field for the national anthems, she was in a traditional dress—a red and white saree. Ghoshal's video of singing the Indian national song quickly went viral on the internet. 

Sri Lanka Women won the toss and decided to bowl first. The 50-over match was cut short to 48-over, and India went to bat first.

India kept their unbeaten streak alive in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025 with an exciting Super Over triumph against Sri Lanka in Dubai. The game acted as a dead rubber before the final but turned out to be a thriller after Pathum Nissanka’s stunning century nearly spoiled India’s streak. 

India batted first and made 202/5 which is their highest total of the tournament thus far. Abhishek Sharma gave India a blazing start, scoring 61 runs off 31 balls and hitting seven fours and two sixes. Tilak Varma anchored the middle overs with an unbeaten 49 off 34, while Sanju Samson contributed 24. Sri Lanka picked wickets at regular intervals but could not stop India from crossing the 200-run mark comfortably.

Sri Lanka’s chase was led by Nissanka, who scored his maiden T20I century, and Kusal Perera, who added 54 off 27. Together, they stitched a record 127-run partnership and kept Sri Lanka in the game. However, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy slowed the scoring in the middle overs, triggering a mini-collapse. The game went down to the final ball, with three runs needed. Nissanka was dismissed first ball of the last over, and Dasun Shanaka managed only two, tying the match at 202. In the Super Over, Arshdeep Singh bowled superbly, dismissing both Perera and Shanaka for just two runs, allowing India to win off the first ball through Suryakumar Yadav’s three-run strike.

We are already in the finals, but have your own plans and execute it. I have seen him execute his plans, do really well for India and his IPL franchise. His confidence says it all and no one but Arshdeep for that Super Over. Let's have a good recovery tonight. Let us not think about that (the final) right now. Few boys had a lot of cramps today. Have a good recovery day tomorrow and we will turn up the same way we did today. "It was a fabulous game and we were in the game until Varun and Kuldeep bowled those middle overs. It was unbelievable batting (from Nissanka), they have some extremely good bowlers and it was really good to see him bat with that attacking approach. Lots of positives from the Asia Cup. We have been playing good cricket and unfortunately we couldn't win in the last 2 games. As a captain, there are a lot of positives to take."

During the final Super 4 match of the 2025 Asia Cup on September 26, India ultimately won against Sri Lanka in a thrilling Super Over after the match ended in a tie. India set a good target after scoring 202/5, with Abhishek Sharma scoring 61 and Tilak Varma scoring 49. 3. Arshdeep Singh had a significant Super Over.

 India put its trust into Arshdeep Singh to bowl in the Super Over, and he proved himself under pressure, taking the wickets of Kusal Perera and Dasun Shanaka for only two runs to confirm India's win.

The last Super 4 match of the 2025 Asia Cup between India and Sri Lanka has been staged as a thriller in Dubai, looking to go to the wire. India posed a challenging target of 202/5, although Sri Lanka, riding on a brilliant century from Pathum Nissanka, gave a robust chase. With just 12 runs needed off the last over, the stage was set for a dramatic finish.

India’s young pacer Harshit Rana was given the task of bowling in the final over. He immediately struck gold by removing Nissanka on the very first delivery for a superb 107, leaving Sri Lanka with a mountain to climb. Debutant Janith Liyanage then joined Dasun Shanaka in the middle with Sri Lanka needing 12 from 5 balls.

The crowd was kept anxious as the runs came in ones, twos, and even a leg-bye, and Shanaka converted on an error in the field to add two big runs, depositing the pressure right back on India. There was tension in the crowd as Sri Lanka needed 3 runs off the final ball to win the match.

Super Over to Decide the Outcome

On the final ball Rana kept his nerve and prevented the runs that had to be scored thereby ending the match in a tie. This result led to the first Super Over of the Asia Cup 2025 being staged, turning the already fantastic contest into one with even more excitement.

However, India won the Super Over. Sri Lanka batted first but could only muster 2 runs while losing 2 wickets to Arshdeep Singh. Suryakumar Yadav scored the winning runs for India, and they easily chased the target of 3 runs to win the match and stay undefeated in the tournament.

India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson shows his frustration after he was dismissed against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 match at the Dubai International Stadium. Samson had some inconsistency recently and was upset about not capitalizing after a solid start.

The Kerala batter has not looked at his best since losing his place as an opener to India’s vice-captain Shubman Gill. Samson’s finest performances in T20Is have usually come while opening, where he scored several centuries. However, since Gill’s return to the top of the order, Samson has been pushed down the batting lineup, and his rhythm has suffered.

In recent matches, Samson has been slotted in the middle order, including as low as No. 8 against Bangladesh. Against Sri Lanka, however, he looked more comfortable batting at No.5, playing some impressive strokes and appearing set for a half-century before falling short.

Samson’s Dismissal and Expert Opinion

Samson scored 39 runs off 23 balls, including one four and three sixes. On the third ball of the 16th over, he walked down the track to hit a full delivery from Dasun Shanaka but mistimed his shot. The ball flew towards extra cover, where Sri Lankan skipper Charith Asalanka backtracked and took a stunning reverse-cup catch. Samson, visibly angry with himself, screamed in frustration as he walked off.

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo before the match, former India pacer Varun Aaron suggested that Samson should be consistently used in the middle order. “He's not getting much batting time, and when he does get batting, he's obviously batting way outside his position. So Samson is one of those batters who they would want to give him some game time, but then again, there's no point of batting Samson in a game like this at number three when he's not going to bat at number three in a final. So you rather bat Sanju Samson at his place, and I would say don't chop and change the batting lineup too much. Just make sure your batting lineup stays the same as they would in a final against maybe Pakistan,” he said.

Aaron also predicted India’s smooth progress, adding: “Absolutely, it has to be a straightforward one. India going through, sailing through, just like the way they've been doing in the whole tournament.”

Indian bowlers were frustrated with the dominant second wicket partnership for Sri Lanka, as the Lankans were seemed to be comfortably snatching the win in the dead rubber Super Fours match in the Asia Cup 2025. Finally, the Indian spinner Varun Chakaravarthy brought the crucial breakthrough for the Men in Blues by dismissing one of the dangerous batters, experienced Kusal Perera.

Sri Lanka are chasing the 203-run target in the last game of the Super Fours in the Asia Cup 2025. Although India got an early wicket, as the opener Kusal Mendis was dismissed for a golden duck in the first over of the innings after Hardik Pandya took that wicket, another opener Pathum Nissanka and the no.3 batter Kusal Perera changed the atmosphere of the game with their powerful second-wicket partnership. These two Lankan batters spared none of the Indian bowlers.

In less than 12 overs of the second wicket partnership between Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera, they added 127 runs. Varun Chakaravarthy broke the dangerous partnership

While Nissanka and Perera were both charging against the Indian bowlers, Kuldeep Yadav suddenly put a break in the 12th over, as the required run rate pressured the set Lankan partnership. It ultimately worked for the Indian team, as Varun Chakaravarthy produced the key wicket for India by dismissing Perera. Under pressure Perera went to attack the Indian spinner and came down the pitch, while the Lankan batter completely missed that ball, and the Indian keeper Sanju Samson comfortably stumped out Perera. Perera left the ground after scoring 58 runs off 32 balls with eight fours and one six, while Nissanka's presence still put the Lankan team in the upper hand in the game.

India suffered an early blow in Match 6 of Super 4 in Asia Cup 2025 against Sri Lanka, as Shubman Gill was dismissed cheaply by Maheesh Theekshana. The wicket fell in the 1.3 over at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Gill, who has been India's consistent performer in this tournament, has only added 4 runs off 3 balls and a boundary before having to make his back to the pavilion.

Theekshana bowled a 96 kmph delivery that drifted in around the fifth stump. Gill attempted a straight drive but could not keep the ball down and Theekshana quickly reacted by diving to his left to take an excellent caught and bowled to give Sri Lanka the first breakthrough. this brilliant piece of fielding put India under early pressure and got Sri Lanka on the front foot in just the opening overs.

However, India have already qualified for the Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan on September 28. The team will face their arch-rivals after a strong Super 4 performance. This match against Sri Lanka is now more about momentum and practice for the big final clash.

Gill’s dismissal was significant, as he has scored a total of 115 runs in 6 innings in the Asia Cup 2025 with an average of 23.00 and a strike rate of 155.41. His highest score is only 47 runs. With Gill back in the pavilion early, India’s middle order will have to step up and build partnerships to steady the innings and chase what is likely to be a competitive total.
