Joe Root played another brilliant innings, scoring his 39th Test hundred and proving once again why he’s one of the best in the modern game. On Day 4 of the fifth and final Test against India at The Oval, he reached the milestone in 137 balls, guiding England closer to a big series win.

It was a special moment. With “Rooooooot” echoing around the ground, the 34‑year‑old tucked the ball towards long leg, ran two, lifted his bat to the dressing room, then pulled out a headband and pointed to the sky in tribute to Graham Thorpe.

His proud parents stood in the stands, applauding their son. This was Root’s 13th hundred against India the most by any batter going past Steve Smith’s 11. He also overtook Kumar Sangakkara’s tally of 38 Test centuries, now standing behind only Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45), and Ricky Ponting (41). Root also became the first player to score more than 6,000 runs in the World Test Championship. In his 69 WTC matches, he has 21 hundreds and 23 fifties, showing unmatched consistency.

Chasing 374 to win the series 3‑1, Root took charge after Harry Brook’s quick 111. He reached his fifty with a neat push to deep backward square leg and kept finding the gaps, frustrating India’s bowlers. His calm approach and smart batting kept England in control. His hundred put him level with Sunil Gavaskar for most Test hundreds against one team (13), with only Don Bradman’s 19 against England ahead. In all formats, it was his 16th century against India, matching Steve Smith.

Root’s knock also added to the record for most hundreds in a five‑Test series 21 in total equalling the 1955 Australia vs West Indies series. It was not just another century; it showed once again his ability to shine in big moments and take the game away from the opposition. He finally fell to Prasidh Krishna for 105 in the last ball of the 73rd over, but by then, England were well on their way to sealing the series.

<![CDATA[ENG vs IND: Ravindra Jadeja Hits Crucial Fifty in 5th Test at The Oval]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/eng-vs-ind-ravindra-jadeja-hits-crucial-fifty-in-5th-test-at-the-oval/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/eng-vs-ind-ravindra-jadeja-hits-crucial-fifty-in-5th-test-at-the-oval/ Sat, 02 Aug 2025 22:17:17 GMT

Ravindra Jadeja is showing no signs of slowing down. While teammates Rohit Sharm and Virat Kohli have retired from Test cricket after a dip in form, Jadeja is enjoying one of the best batting runs of his career. Once known mainly as a bowling all‑rounder, he has now proved himself as a complete batter.

His latest fifty at The Oval is his fifth of the England tour, along with a fine hundred. This makes him the first Indian to score over 500 runs in a Test series while batting at No.6 or lower. He has scored runs in almost every match, missing a fifty only once at Leeds where he was still unbeaten on 25.

At Edgbaston and Lord’s, he made twin fifties, at Old Trafford he hit a century, and now he ends the tour with another important half‑century. Coming in at 229/5 in the final Test, Jadeja steadied the innings and then played his shots. On a tough second‑innings pitch, he once again proved why he’s been India’s most reliable player this series.

Team India’s batting line-up Creacted a remarkable performance in the ongoing Test series against England. They scored 300 runs or more in an innings eight times, matching the record for the most 300+ totals in a single Test series in cricket history.

This is the first time since 1993 that a visiting team has scored to post seven or more 300+ scores in a bilateral Test series in England. India went one step further to make it eight, joining an elite list of teams to achieve this milestone.

The series saw great contributions from all players. Shubman Gill led the way with four centuries, including a superb double hundred. KL Rahul was solid at the top, scoring over 500 runs in the series. Ravindra Jadeja also made history by becoming the first Indian batting at No. 6 or lower to score more than 500 runs in this Test series.

Scoring consistently over 300 runs in every innings showed India’s depth and resilience in this young team. Against tough English conditions and quality bowling, this batting display will be remembered as one of India’s best overseas Test series performances.

<![CDATA[[Watch]: English captain Ben Stokes refuses shaking hands with Ravindra Jadeja]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/videos/english-captain-ben-stokes-refuses-shaking-hands-with-ravindra-jadeja/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/videos/english-captain-ben-stokes-refuses-shaking-hands-with-ravindra-jadeja/ Sun, 27 Jul 2025 23:25:04 GMT

The England vs India 2025 Manchester Test ended on a sour note due to the last-hour handshake drama, and it stretched to the end of the match as the English Test captain Ben Stokes refused to shake his hand with the Indian cricketer Ravindra Jadeja, who played an important role for India to save the Test match.

Before the Manchester Test, which was the fourth game of the five-match Test series between the hosts England and the visitors India (Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025), India were trailing the series by 2-1. So, the visitors can't afford any more defeats in this Test series, while they still need one win to save the Test series.

While the hosts England got a 311-run lead at the end of both teams' first innings of the Manchester Test, India were in danger of losing the Test series before the last game of the Test series. The situation became more complex for the visitors, after they were 0/2 in the first over. However, opener KL Rahul, skipper Shubman Gill first controlled the early situation with a strong 188-run partnership for the third wicket. While Rahul scored 90 runs, the Indian captain scored 103 runs.

Manchester Test ended with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar's centuries

Later, the middle-order batters Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja saved India with the 203-run partnership for the unbroken fifth wicket, as India finished the match with their second innings total of 425/4. Both Sundar (101*) and Jadeja (107*) completed their centuries, which were their maiden and fifth Test centuries, respectively. However, their centuries happened after the final hour handshake drama on the field.

As per the rules, the on-field umpires called the start of the last hour, which meant 15 overs left for the match. As the match had a dead end, English captain Ben Stokes called the Indian batters to shake hands to officially draw the Test match. At that time, Jadeja was at 89 not out, while Sundar was batting on 80 not out, who was looking at his maiden international century. Both batters clearly wanted to play to complete their centuries, but the English cricketers were unhappy with that decision.

While both batters completed their respective centuries, the match officially ended after Sundar's maiden Test hundred. At the end of the match, the English Test captain Ben Stokes didn't shake hands with both the Indian cricketers, while it also seemed that Jadeja wanted handshaking, but the opponent skipper had no interest.

Jofra Archer is expected to make his long-awaited comeback for England in the third Test against India this week at Lord’s. England’s head coach, Brendon McCullum, has asked for a pitch with good pace, bounce and movement to help the fast bowlers. Archer, who is 30 now, was with the team at Edgbaston last week but didn’t play in England’s heavy 336-run loss to India. With the series tied at 1-1, McCullum hinted that they will freshen up the bowling attack, making room for Archer to return.

Jofra Archer set for Test return at Lord’s

“He will definitely be available for selection,” McCullum said. “Our fast bowlers have played two Tests in a row with little rest before we head to Lord’s. We’ll see how things settle, but Jofra is looking fit, strong and ready to play.” Lord’s is a special place for Archer. It’s where he made his memorable Test debut in the 2019 Ashes, taking five wickets and delivering that famous bouncer that forced Australia’s Steve Smith to retire with concussion.

But Archer has been out of Test cricket for four years because of elbow and back injuries.
Since his last Test in 2021, he has mostly played limited-overs cricket and only managed one first-class match for Sussex this season. “We all know what he can do in Tests,” McCullum said. “We hope that when he gets his chance, he can find that form again and maybe do even better.”

England will also have to decide which bowler to rest if Archer comes in.
Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue have all bowled two tough Tests and looked tired in the last match, where India’s Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj bowled much better. India have also confirmed that their star bowler Jasprit Bumrah will definitely return for the Lord’s Test, making it even tougher for England.

Mohammed Siraj had a rough start on Day 3 of the second Test at Edgbaston. He couldn’t get his run-up right twice in a row. The second time, the English crowd booed him. When he finally bowled his first ball, they clapped sarcastically. That sort of start can shake any bowler’s confidence. But not Siraj.

Just two balls later, he turned it around completely. He got Joe Root out down the leg side. It wasn’t even a great ball just on the pads.
Root moved too much towards the stumps and fell over a bit. He couldn’t get the full face of the bat on it. The ball brushed the inside edge and Rishabh Pant took a sharp catch to his left.

“Joe Root is devastated,” said Dinesh Karthik on commentary.
Root looked heartbroken. On a pitch good for batting, with England chasing India’s huge 587, he was their biggest hope. But he was out for just 22 in a surprising way. Then Ben Stokes walked in at No.5. He hadn’t scored well in the series so far but looked confident. Siraj ran in and bowled a nasty ball that rose from a good length. Stokes had no time to react. It hit the top of his bat and went straight to Pant. He was out for a golden duck.

Siraj had turned a shaky start into a dream over in just three balls getting Root and Stokes in back-to-back deliveries.
Don’t forget, he had also dismissed Zak Crawley late on Day 1. England had started Day 3 at 77 for 3, still 510 runs behind. By the second over of the day, they were 83 for 5. “It’s the moving day and India are moving in the right direction,” said Karthik on commentary.

<![CDATA["My Responsibility to Improve" : Prasidh Krishna Aims to Bounce Back After 1st Test Struggles]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/my-responsibility-to-improve-prasidh-krishna-aims-to-bounce-back-after-1st-test-struggles/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/my-responsibility-to-improve-prasidh-krishna-aims-to-bounce-back-after-1st-test-struggles/ Sat, 28 Jun 2025 22:40:33 GMT

Prasidh Krishna opened up about his performance in the first Test against England, he said that he didn’t bowl as well as he would have liked, especially on the final day at Edgbaston.

Though he took five wickets across both innings, his short-ball tactic ended up costing India.
While it worked briefly in the first innings, it was only when he started bowling fuller on Day 5 that he began troubling the batters. But by then, England were well on their way to chasing down a big target of 371 runs, winning the match by five wickets. This came even after four Indian batters hit centuries one scoring hundreds in both innings and Jasprit Bumrah picked up a five-wicket haul.

Reflecting on the game, Prasidh said, “In the first innings, I bowled shorter than I should have.
In the second, I improved a bit because the pitch was slower. I had to go a bit fuller to look for wickets.”

His second innings figures read 2 for 92 in 15 overs, with an economy rate of 6.13 the highest among Indian bowlers.
In the first innings, he gave away 128 runs in 20 overs.

“I didn’t bowl the lengths I wanted to. It took me some time to adjust to the slope on that side. But there’s no excuse as a professional, I should have done better.
I take full responsibility and hope to improve next time,” he said.

Talking about Day 5, Prasidh also mentioned his mindset while bowling. “Every time I came on to bowl, I was trying to bowl a maiden over. I wasn’t trying to leak runs.
But the outfield was quick, and honestly, my lines and lengths weren’t perfect. A few edges flew past the slips, some fell short. I tried some bouncers too, but they went for runs. Still, my aim was always to keep the run rate down and build pressure,” he added. Prasidh’s honest words show he’s ready to learn from his mistakes and come back stronger in the next match.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has said that Shreyas Iyer may not get a place in the Test team anytime soon, even though he’s been in great form across formats lately.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra explained, “Shreyas Iyer won’t get a chance right now.
There are many players still waiting. Karun Nair just got his opportunity, Sarfaraz Khan hasn’t had a proper run, and Dhruv Jurel is also waiting. If Iyer isn’t even ahead in the queue, how can he be picked?”

Sarfaraz Khan Keeps Pressure On with Consistent Red-Ball Performances

Chopra admitted that Iyer has been doing well he had a strong first-class season, played brilliantly in the IPL by leading Punjab Kings to the final, and was India’s top scorer in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. But Chopra believes that Test cricket demands patience. “He’s doing everything right, but in red-ball cricket, chances take time. His turn will come, he just has to wait a little,” he said.

At the same time, Sarfaraz Khan is making the most of his chances.
After scoring three fifties and a 150 in just six Tests, he impressed with a 92 for India A against the England Lions.

Gautam Gambhir Under Pressure After Poor Test Results, Given Final Warning

Head coach Gautam Gambhir is facing serious questions after his team suffered yet another Test defeat. Former cricketer Aakash Chopra has said clearly it’s time to show results, no more excuses.

The team recently lost the first match of the five-Test series against England at Headingley, even after scoring over 800 runs and getting five players to hit centuries. It was a close game, but things fell apart on the last day, adding to a worrying pattern.
That makes it seven losses in the last nine Test matches with Gambhir in charge.

Chopra didn’t hold back. “There’s a lot of pressure on him. He’s not winning enough matches. Just two wins against Bangladesh and one against Australia but three losses each to New Zealand and Australia, and now another one to England,” he said.

He warned that if things don’t improve in this series, Gambhir’s job could be on the line. “If the team keeps losing, there will be tough questions. The selectors have given him everything the players he wanted, the support staff, all the tools.
Now it’s time to show results. No excuses,” Chopra added.

Gambhir, on the other hand, still believes in his young bowling group. Even after a tough outing at Headingley, he said the plan is still to rest Jasprit Bumrah for two games in this five-match series, to protect him after his back injury. With the next match coming up at Edgbaston, the team needs to bounce back quickly. The pressure is rising, and all eyes are now on how Gambhir and his players respond.

<![CDATA[ Jadeja Drops Out of ICC Top 10 After Leeds Flop — Time for a Wake-Up Call?]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/jadeja-drops-out-of-icc-top-10-after-leeds-flop-time-for-a-wake-up-call/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/jadeja-drops-out-of-icc-top-10-after-leeds-flop-time-for-a-wake-up-call/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 20:12:55 GMT

Ravindra Jadeja has slipped out of the top 10 in the latest ICC Test bowler rankings following a quiet outing in the Leeds Test against England. His performance — just one wicket for 172 runs across 27 overs didn’t help India’s cause as the visitors fell to a five-wicket defeat on Day 5. For someone expected to lead the spin attack, especially in English conditions with no other frontline spinner in the XI, the numbers were underwhelming.

Prior to the rankings update on June 25, Jadeja held the No.10 spot among Test bowlers. However, the lack of impact in Leeds saw him drop three places to 13th. While that’s a setback, the left-arm all-rounder continues to hold onto the No.1 position in the Test all-rounder rankings a title he’s retained through consistent performances over time. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah remains India’s bowling spearhead, climbing higher thanks to his first-innings five-wicket haul.

The game at Headingley highlighted not just England’s smart batting but also India’s missed opportunities with the ball and Jadeja’s lack of penetration was a major talking point. On a Day 5 pitch that was offering rough patches tailor-made for a left-arm spinner, Jadeja struggled to extract bite or control, leading to criticism from former cricketers and analysts alike.

Missed Opportunity in Leeds as Jadeja Fails to Capitalise on Conditions

Former India cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar didn’t hold back in his assessment of Jadeja’s effort. He pointed out that while the pitch wasn’t classic English seamer-friendly territory, it did offer something for the spinner especially the rough areas outside the right-hander’s off stump. Jadeja, according to Manjrekar, failed to target that consistently, particularly against Ben Duckett, who batted freely through the final session.

Manjrekar noted that Jadeja did eventually make some adjustments against Ben Stokes but felt it came too late. In high-pressure games and on final-day pitches, experience is expected to shine and that, many felt, was missing. With the second Test starting July 2 in Birmingham, all eyes will be on how Jadeja responds to the criticism and whether he can bounce back with a performance more worthy of his reputation.
