On this day (November 13, 2014), Rohit Sharma encrypted history by smashing 264 runs against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. It was the fourth ODI of the series and a stage for Rohit Sharma to come back after sustaining a finger injury. After the injury layoff, Sharma himself was gasping for some extra oxygen to breathe. How could he mark the comeback? That was the question.

The way he replied was mind-blowing. His innings could have ended only for 4 but carried a long, long way because of a routine drop catch by Thisara Perera at the third man region. As the innings progressed, the young opener, Rohit Sharma, pushed the paddles hard to increase the striking rate. He scored 264 runs in just 173 deliveries. The innings was laced with 33 boundaries and 9 over boundaries, with a strike rate of 152.60.

During this innings, he touched the first 100-run mark at a run a ball, but the remaining 164 needed just 73 deliveries. With the record-breaking knock, India, as a team, posted 404 runs in exchange for 5 wickets, batting first. In reply, Sri Lanka was able to gather only 251 runs; India won the contest by a big margin of 153 runs. With the double hundred, Rohit became the first to score two double centuries in the format. His third double century came in 2017.

Record-breaking 264-run knock by Rohit Sharma vs Sri Lanka

"I have been working on it. To bat as long as possible. Finally I managed that. That run-out of Virat was my mistake. Things like that happened, but no hard feelings there. It was a crucial partnership we were building, and to lose him then was quite frustrating," Sharma said after the match.

"But I kept telling myself to keep on going. It's going to be difficult to pick out one shot that stands out. I really cannot pick out one. I will try my best to get to 300, but as of now I will take 264. A lot of memories at Eden Gardens that will remain close to me. This one was really special."

<![CDATA[Sri Lanka’s opener Nissanka scores maiden T20I hundred vs India]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/sri-lanka-s-opener-nissanka-scores-maiden-t20i-hundred-vs-india/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/sri-lanka-s-opener-nissanka-scores-maiden-t20i-hundred-vs-india/ Sat, 27 Sep 2025 00:44:23 GMT

In the Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 match against India, Pathum Nissanka, a right-handed opener for Sri Lanka, accomplished a remarkable milestone by scoring his maiden T20I century. After setting a demanding goal of 203 runs to chase in Dubai on Friday, Nissanka displayed a masterful and composed innings to keep Sri Lanka in the game throughout the edgy run chase.

The opener built a match-high value partnership with a veteran, Kusal Perera, for the second wicket that was 127. The partnership is now also the third-highest partnership for Sri Lanka for any wicket in T20Is, ranking behind the celebrated partnerships of Jayawardene-Sangakkara and Dilshan-Jayawardene in World Cups. Nissanka lost his partner early, due to a dismissal at the behest of Kusal Mendis, but he was able to steady the ship and score 47 runs in the powerplay single-handedly.

Nissanka scores maiden T20I century for Sri Lanka

Nissanka first reached fifty from 25 balls, while dominating the Indian bowlers, and continued onwards to a quick century after the wicket of Perera in the thirteenth over. Even as India picked up regular wickets to narrow the match swing to their advantage, Nissanka was not deterred after scoring his century in only 52 balls. Moreover, the innings secured Nissanka as the very first batter from Sri Lanka to score a T20I hundred against India, while exceeding the record from the overall position of 79 set in 2024.

Nissanka's century was a lesson in timing and technique. He took control of a wayward yorker from Arshdeep Singh, moving across his stumps with balance and striking with power straight down the ground over the bowler's head. It was neither over the top nor underwhelming as he celebrated, taking off his helmet and acknowledging the applause from the crowd.

Before Nissanka's exploits, India had set a target of 202/5 after opting to bat first. Minibus Abhishek Sharma led the way with 61 runs off 31 balls, while Tilak Varma finished with a useful 49 runs off 34 balls. Sharma's knock would also lead him to become the leading run-scorer in an Asia Cup T20I edition ahead of seniors Virat Kohli and Mohammad Rizwan. Sanju Samson added 39 useful runs, providing a total that India would be able to defend at the back of their 3-pronged pace attack.

While Nissanka created his own piece of T20I history, what he also demonstrated, aside from showing power and timing, was the ability to not lose your composure and play in the temperament in a big run chase. The century was reflective of who Nissanka is as a captain and batter. While Sri Lanka had to chase a big total on arrival, it showcased that Nissanka can rise with the pressure of having to anchor and lead his team on the run chase.

When Pakistan qualified to face India in the final of the Asia Cup 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, the India vs Sri Lanka clash of the Super 4 stage was supposed to be a dead rubber. No one had much interest in the game. However, nobody knew that it would turn out to be a classic between the two sides as the game progressed to a super-over.

Batting first, India smashed 202/5 in their allotted 20 overs of the innings, thanks to Abhishek Sharma’s fine knock of 61 runs in 31 balls with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes at a strike rate of nearly 200. Tilak Verma remained unbeaten on 49 runs. Sri Lanka, in reply, despite Pathum Nissanka’s 107 runs in 58 deliveries, finished on the same score.

The game moved into a super-over. Arshdeep Singh was shouldered for the responsibility as Sri Lanka sent Kusal Perera and Dasun Shanaka for the batting job. On the very first ball, the left-handed batter was dismissed after he was caught by the sweeper cover.

In the second ball of the super-over, Kamindu Mendis took a single to bring Shanaka on strike. The right-handed batter missed the third legal delivery of the over before the fourth ball was called a wide. There was drama around the fourth legal ball of the over.

Arshdeep bowled a superb ball, which Shanaka missed. But the wicket-keeper, Saju Samson, was able to send the batter back through a run-out. However, because the bowling-end umpire raised his finger to Arshdeep’s appeal, and later it was changed due to the DRS decision, the run-out didn’t happen because the ball was already dead by then. However, it didn’t matter because the fifth ball saw Shanaka getting dismissed.

It took India only one delivery against Wanindu Hasaranga. The T20I captain of the Indian side, Suryakumar Yadav, punched it through the wide cover and came back for three runs to complete the chase and collect the nervy win in the super-over.

Indian bowlers were frustrated with the dominant second wicket partnership for Sri Lanka, as the Lankans were seemed to be comfortably snatching the win in the dead rubber Super Fours match in the Asia Cup 2025. Finally, the Indian spinner Varun Chakaravarthy brought the crucial breakthrough for the Men in Blues by dismissing one of the dangerous batters, experienced Kusal Perera.

Asia Cup 2025 (Super Fours), India vs Sri Lanka: Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera thrashed all Indian bowlers

Sri Lanka are chasing the 203-run target in the last game of the Super Fours in the Asia Cup 2025. Although India got an early wicket, as the opener Kusal Mendis was dismissed for a golden duck in the first over of the innings after Hardik Pandya took that wicket, another opener Pathum Nissanka and the no.3 batter Kusal Perera changed the atmosphere of the game with their powerful second-wicket partnership. These two Lankan batters spared none of the Indian bowlers.

In less than 12 overs of the second wicket partnership between Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera, they added 127 runs. It was the record T20I partnership for Sri Lanka for any wicket against India, while their previous record against India was the 109-run second wicket partnership between Kusal Perera and Upul Tharanga during the 2017 Indore T20I.

Varun Chakaravarthy broke the dangerous partnership

While Nissanka and Perera were both charging against the Indian bowlers, Kuldeep Yadav suddenly put a break in the 12th over, as the required run rate pressured the set Lankan partnership. It ultimately worked for the Indian team, as Varun Chakaravarthy produced the key wicket for India by dismissing Perera. Under pressure Perera went to attack the Indian spinner and came down the pitch, while the Lankan batter completely missed that ball, and the Indian keeper Sanju Samson comfortably stumped out Perera. Perera left the ground after scoring 58 runs off 32 balls with eight fours and one six, while Nissanka's presence still put the Lankan team in the upper hand in the game.

In-form opener Abhishek Sharma continued his terrific form with the bat in the Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 match against Sri Lanka on Friday, September 26, in Dubai. The left-hander maintained his reputation as the tournament's most consistent batter, cutting up the Lankan bowlers with his aggressive batting.

Abhishek's most brilliant shot came without long to wait in the innings. Before long, he welcomed offspinner Maheesh Theekshana with an 88-metre six in the second over. Theekshana sent an inviting delivery into the slot just outside leg stump, and the southpaw made a small backward step before launching the ball into the second tier into the mid-wicket boundary for a monster six. Here was yet another sign of his confidence and form.

Abhishek Sharma shines as India stay unbeaten

With this effort, Abhishek has now made over 250 runs in the tournament in only 6 innings, making him the tournament's leading scorer in the Asia Cup 2025. The 25-year-old already has two innings of 74 (39) against Pakistan and 75 (37) against Bangladesh that were key in winning those contests for India in the Super 4 match wins. Not done there, in a match earlier this year against England, Abhishek blasted 135 runs off 54 balls, showing that he is simply one of the most dangerous opening batters in world cricket.

Watch the video:

Despite India suffering an early blow in the match with Shubman Gill going cheaply for just four runs, the right-handed opener being caught and bowled by Theekshana and showcasing a rather muted performance compared to his partner, at the time of writing, India was well placed, at 59/1 in the first five overs, Abhishek batting on 41 off 19 balls and skipper Suryakumar Yadav on 10 runs.

India has gone unbeaten in the competition so far this year, under Suryakumar's captaincy, and looks to make it six in a row against Pakistan on September 28 at the same venue, in the final repeat in an attempt to claim a record-extending ninth Asia Cup title against its historical rival.

In contrast to India's impressive showing thus far, Sri Lanka's campaign has come to an unfortunate and disappointing end in their losses against Bangladesh and Pakistan, leading Charith Asalanka's squad to the headline on account of not being competitive any longer in the tournament, with the final being strictly between India and Pakistan.

Before the first India vs Pakistan Asia Cup Final, which will be played on this Sunday (September 28) at Dubai in the Asia Cup 2025 Final, India and Sri Lanka are facing off each other at Dubai in the last game of the Super Fours in the tournament on Friday (September 26). In this dead rubber fixture, as the defending champions India have already qualified for the Final and the T20 Asia Cup defending champions Sri Lanka have already been eliminated, India have made two changes, as Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dube are not in the squad.

Asia Cup 2025, Super Fours: India vs Sri Lanka - Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dube rested

At the toss, Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka chose to bowl first after winning the toss. While Sri Lanka made a single change, as Janith Liyanage has been included as the replacement of Charith Asalanka, India made two changes. While the right-arm fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and pace-bowling all-rounder Shivam Dube have been rested from the playing XI, the left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh and right-arm fast bowler Harshit Rana have returned to the playing XI. While it is a good opportunity for both pacers to produce their top performances before the India vs Pakistan match in the Final, Bumrah and Dube have gotten crucial rest before the tournament Final.

Both Bumrah and Dube have taken five wickets each in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, as they are India's joint second leading wicket-taker in the tournament. In three innings of this tournament, Dube scored 17 runs.

On Friday, September 26, India will play Sri Lanka in the last match in the Super Four of the Asia Cup 2025 tournament, which will take place at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. This match has no meaning, as India already qualified for finals while Sri Lanka was eliminated; in the previous match, India secured an easy 41-run victory against Bangladesh. Abhishek Sharma scored an outstanding 75 off just 37 balls for India, while Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Axar Patel bowled consistently.

With two wins and outstanding net run rate, India will come into this match unbeaten and will try to use this as their final practice game for the finals. Suryakumar Yadav's team might try different batting combinations and assess match strategies before their title match-up in the final. Sri Lanka's matches were frustrating; they lost closely contested matches to Bangladesh and Pakistan and did not win a match. However, they will try to finish strong and position themselves well to find some positives if possible.

India's vice-captain overtakes legend Mithali Raj to top India's century-makers in ODIs. Smriti Mandhana has marked her name deeper into the records of Indian cricket history as she became India's leading ODI hundred-maker batter in women's cricket. By virtue of her latest masterclass at the crease, Mandhana achieved her 11th ODI century, surpassing erstwhile India captain and legend Mithali Raj, who had registered 7 centuries during her storied 211-match career. What adds more glory to Mandhana's achievement is the speed at which she has achieved this feat — within a mere 102 innings.

Popular for her poise and timing, Mandhana has been the pillar of India's leading order for almost a decade now.
Since making her debut in 2013, she has demonstrated an unbelievable capacity to change her game according to conditions and opposition. Her recent century not only guided India to a dominant position in the current ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka but also reaffirmed her standing as one of the best batters in the contemporary game. The left-hander's aggressive-but-controlled approach has been compared to some of the greatest players to have ever played the sport.

Mithali Raj, the trailblazer of Indian women's cricket, dominated the record for the most centuries for more than a decade. Consistency and leadership by Raj constructed a platform for the present generation, but now it's Mandhana who is moving forward with the baton in style. The changeover from Raj to Mandhana reflects a change in strategy — from constructing long innings to playing more aggressively and with intent, an image of the change in women's cricket around the world.

A New Era of Indian Batting Supremacy

Mandhana's record-breaking achievement is greater than a personal milestone — it marks a change of guard. Her centuries frequently arrive in make-or-break games, under duress, and with panache.

With years on her side, she can be expected to extend this margin further and provide a template for generations to follow. As women's cricket draws more international focus, Mandhana remains the face of India's charge, bringing inspiration to tens of thousands of young girls right across the country.

On May 27, the final match will be held. India can face a serious threat from South Africa. Sri Lanka must pull itself out of their recent bad patch.

Sri Lanka, despite being the host nation, is currently on the backfoot as they were recently defeated by New Zealand and Ireland. Sri Lanka, led by Chamari Athapaththu, would like to regroup in the tournament.

The India Women's team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, is set to face Sri Lanka on Sunday as a part of a tri-series (Servo Cup 2025) between the host Sri Lanka, India, and South Africa. The tournament is considered to be an important stage prior to the ICC World Cup, only 5 months away.

India is the utmost favorite to win the series, but Kaur has to closely monitor her bowling line-up. On pen and paper, India's batting line-up is looking very stable, but bowlers need to prove themselves. From the tri-nation series, Kaur and Co. can measure their team's performance, which can prove helpful during the grand stage. Team India was on song in the ODI format in the recent past.

Sri Lanka, despite being the host nation, is currently on the back foot as they were recently defeated by New Zealand and Ireland. Sri Lanka, led by Chamari Athapaththu, will like to regroup themselves in the tournament. And South Africa, with all the elements to become a champion, needs to perform under pressure.
