The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially postponed the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) for a week amid growing tensions at the India-Pakistan border. BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla confirmed the decision, asserting that the board is fully with the Indian government and military at this juncture. "IPL 2025 has been suspended for one week in consideration of the situation. The revised schedule will be notified after consultations with the government, stakeholders, and broadcasters. We are proud of the Indian Army. BCCI stands by our Armed Forces and the government," Shukla stated.

The move followed the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala being suddenly abandoned halfway through the first innings on May 8. Fans were ordered out of the ground at once, and players were escorted out of harm's way. The fact that Dharamsala is located near the north border, only 85-90 km away, was the reason behind immediate safety actions.

Match Called Off for Safety, BCCI Plans Revised IPL Schedule Amid Uncertainty

Interestingly, IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal later disclosed that the stadium blackout was deliberately blamed on a floodlight malfunction to prevent crowd panic. The board has since explained that the actual reason for the abandonment was the worsening border situation.

Sanjay Sharma, a member of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA), has confirmed that the local administration, the Punjab Kings franchise, and HPCA personnel were all in close communication in expectation of possible disruptions. The BCCI has even scheduled a special Vande Bharat train to transport Delhi Capitals players, Punjab Kings players, and the broadcast team safely back to Delhi.

In terms of foreign players' participation in the future, Rajeev Shukla said that it will be up to individual franchises and the players themselves. Though the tournament itself is suspended for only a short time, there is doubt about what happens to the remaining schedule. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has now officially declared the postponement of Match No. 19 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The originally scheduled match on Sunday, April 6 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, will be held on Tuesday, April 8 at 3:30 PM IST at the same ground.

The alteration is in response to a plea by Kolkata Police to Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for deploying large numbers of personnel across the city for the celebration of Ram Navami on April 6. The IPL committee, acting on it, had initially thought of moving the match to Guwahati for one day. But KKR were adamant about keeping their home game at Eden Gardens.

After negotiations, the match has now been officially confirmed to stay in Kolkata, but with a new date and start time. The game will now be the opener of a double-header on April 8, when Punjab Kings play Chennai Super Kings in the evening at New Chandigarh, as was originally scheduled.

Due to this change, there will be a single match on April 6, with the Gujarat Titans visiting Sunrisers Hyderabad at 7:30 PM IST in Hyderabad.

The remainder of the IPL 2025 schedule is unaffected.

The tenth edition of the tournament starts on March 22, 2025, with ten teams playing 74 matches at 13 different venues. The honour of playing the first match of the season belongs to Eden Gardens as Kolkata Knight Riders face Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Commenting on the playoff fixtures, Qualifier 1 & Eliminator to be held at Rajiv International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad and Qualifier 2 and the Final at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

The IPL 2025 playoffs are the most critical stage of the tournament where the best teams are competing for the ultimate title. This round consists of four matches of high stakes: Qualifier 1, the Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final. The top four teams in the league stage qualify for the right to compete in these playoffs.
