While the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 is less than two weeks away from beginning, Italy created history after beating Ireland in the dramatic third and last game of the T20I series. 

On Monday (January 26), Italy chose to field first after winning the toss at Dubai. While Ireland scored 154 all out in 19.4 overs, Italy chased down the target in 19.3 overs after six wickets, as they ended the game with three consecutive sixes. It was Italy's first international victory against any ICC Full Member (Test-playing nations). However, Ireland already secured the series by winning the first two games by three wickets and 24 runs, and won the series 2-1.

Paul Stirling and late batting guided Ireland to 150+

In Ireland's innings, captain and opener Paul Stirling scored a crucial 45 runs off 38 balls with two fours and three sixes, but most of their batters failed to score 20s. Only two middle-order batters managed 20+ scores, who were Ben Calitz (22) and Mark Adair (25). 

Among the Italian bowlers, Crishan Kalugamage (3/28) picked up three wickets, while former South African JJ Smuts (2/18) and Grant Stewart (2/27) got two wickets each.

In reply, Italy were losing wickets at regular intervals, but some crucial knocks from the middle orders helped them to create history just before the T20 World Cup. Wayne Madsen (39), Grant Stewart (33 not out off 19 balls with one four and four sixes), and Gian-Piero Meade (22) managed the 20-run mark in the chase. 

The 46-run unbroken partnership between Grant Stewart and Marcus Campopiano (8 not out) for the seventh wicket successfully finished the game for Italy. In the final over, Italy needed 16 runs, where Grant smashed three successive sixes to Barry McCarthy to stun the cricket world. 

Among the Irish bowlers, Matthew Humphreys (2/23) and Mark Adair (2/23) got two wickets each, but they just failed to save the match.

Ireland are in Group B along with the hosts Sri Lanka, who also won the title in 2014, 2021 champions Australia, Zimbabwe, and Oman. The top two teams of the final points table will advance to the Super 8 stage of the tournament. 

Ireland will play all their group stage fixture in Sri Lanka. They will start the tournament with the match against Sri Lanka on February 8, while they will then face Australia, Oman, and Zimbabwe on February 11, 14, and 17, respectively.

Ireland and Italy have faced each other only once before in a T20I – during the 2023 European Qualifier in Edinburgh, where Ireland secured a tight seven-run win. The sides also met in a non-T20I Twenty20 match in Abu Dhabi back in 2012, which Ireland won by two wickets.

The upcoming fixtures will be historic for Italy, marking their first-ever three-match bilateral series against an ICC Full Member. For Ireland, the games come immediately after the announcement of two additional T20Is against the UAE, forming a full preparatory block in Dubai before the World Cup.

The third day’s play during the second Test between Bangladesh and Ireland at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka, was briefly halted after an earthquake was felt at the ground. Ireland was 165/5 in their first innings just after the completion of the 55th over of the second innings when the tremors caused a short interruption.

The Irish players and the Bangladesh support staff, including their coaches, who were sitting under the stands during that over, came outside while some of the spectators also stood in the stadium. The umpires stopped the game for a moment while a few Bangladesh player sat on their haunches to feel the earthquake.

“Goodness. Play has stopped here due to a minor tremor/earthquake.” Cricket Ireland wrote on their X handled, which was formerly known as Twitter, while the Bangladesh Meteorological Department stated, “A 5.7-magnitude earthquake has been felt in Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh today at 10:38 am.”

Bangladesh won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first in the game as they posted a huge total of 476 runs in the first innings. Mushfiqur Rahim, in his 100th Test match, celebrated a fine knock of 106 runs, while Mominul Haque nailed a fine knock of 63 runs. Meanwhile, Litton Das also scored 128 runs in just 192 balls at a strike rate of 66.67.

With the ball, Andy McBrine picked up his second six-wicket haul at the ground, joining the likes of Muttiah Murlitharan, Daniel Vettori, and Nathan Lyon among the visiting bowlers. McBrine ended with very good figures of 6/109 in his 33.1 overs at an economy rate of 3.30. The two other spinners, Matthew Humphreys and Gavin Hoey, also collected two wickets each.

Ireland were strolling at 94/5 towards the end of the second day before they showed great fight back in the third day. Doheny bagged 46 runs while the current stand between Jordan Neil, who nailed 49 runs, and Lorcan Tucker, added 74 runs for the eighth wicket. Ireland were trailing by 225 runs at 251/8 in 83 overs.

Bangladesh won the first Test against Ireland on Friday, November 14, in a commanding way. They achieved an innings and 47-run victory on the second session of day 4 in Sylhet. This win gives Bangladesh a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series.

Ireland started the morning at 86 for 5 and were under pressure from the start. Bangladesh’s bowlers kept control and took two wickets in the first session, dismissing Matthew Humphreys and captain Andrew Balbirnie. Ireland tried to fight back through Jordan Neill and Barry McCarthy. They hit well and scored runs quickly, keeping hope alive to avoid an innings defeat. But Hasan Murad, who bowled brilliantly all match, broke the partnership by dismissing Neill for 36 off 53 balls when the score was 252. In the next over, Taijul Islam removed McCarthy for 25, ending Ireland’s resistance as they folded for 254.

Bangladesh’s bowlers shared the wickets. Murad was the star with 4 wickets, Taijul took 3, and Nahid Rana picked 2 important wickets. Ireland could not challenge Bangladesh at any point. From the start, Bangladesh controlled the match and won easily.

Before July 10, 2025, there were six instances of a bowler picking up four wickets in four balls, with the latest coming last year by Herman Fernell for Argentina. But that was the second occasion of a bowler picking five wickets in five deliveries. Quite interestingly, Curtis Campher is the common link of both the records, as he got the first record in 2021 against the Netherlands in Abu Dhabi. 

The Ireland all-rounder got five wickets in five balls for the Munster Reds against North-West Warriors in the Inter-Provincial T20 trophy and ended with magical figures of 5/16 in 2.3 overs. ‘Because of the change of overs, I wasn't really sure what was happening.
