Australia, champions of the 2021 edition, were knocked out of the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 after Zimbabwe secured a vital point when their fixture against Ireland was abandoned on Tuesday, February 17. The impact of the washout on the group standings would prove significant, confirming an early exit from the tournament for the previous victors. Zimbabwe had already solidified their qualifications with one of their earlier tournament wins and the shared points from the rain-interrupted match between Afghanistan and Zimbabwe allowed them to finish strongly in the hunt to qualify for the Super 8 at the end of the day.

By defeating Australia, Zimbabwe put themselves in a much better position prior to this fixture, by giving them much needed momentum in the group. Additionally, the previous day's result between Sri Lanka and Australia allowed Zimbabwe to advance with at least one win going into the next match. Now fully confident and with momentum on their side, they could look forward to progressing to the next round of the tournament as long as the day's results were as expected. Ultimately, everything went to plan.

Fans packed the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium for what was expected to be an entertaining day of cricket as they watched the Zimbabweans compete against Whitney Anderson to earn a spot at the next T20 World Cup. Unfortunately due to consistent rain throughout the day and delays in getting onto the field after numerous delays in the toss, both teams were unable to play, leading to both teams having four points each, putting Zimbabwe in fifth place overall with a total of five points total whilst Zimbabwe still only had two points. Even if Zimbabwe were able to defeat quote-unquote "Oman" in their final match, it wouldn't have changed their underlying ranking once the tournament ended.

Australia have now missed the semi-finals for a third consecutive edition

After winning their first title in 2021, Australia has now missed out on getting into the semi-finals three times in a row; which is very surprising given Australia's past success as a cricketing nation. Due to injuries to their star players such as Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood being out before the tournament even started and having their regular captain not able to play until after the first two games; hope for a positive result remained strong amongst fans who expected more from a cricketing powerhouse and want to see Australia's dominance continue on a global stage in 2021.

While that was happening down under, Zimbabwe had an amazing time as they confirmed their place in the Super 8; singing and also dancing with players and supporters alike. They will be joining India, South Africa, and West Indies in Group 1 of the next stage, which begins next week, but will first finish up their first-round matches versus Sri Lanka on Thursday before trying to build on their incredible momentum and continue their positive run throughout this tournament. There is an awful lot of optimism from supporters that this kiyumeng squad can take on teams ranked higher than Zimbabwe and continue to make history by advancing further into this competition over the course of the week.

In Match 22 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, Ireland delivered a commanding performance to defeat Oman by 96 runs in Group B. Batting first, Ireland amassed a formidable 235/5 in their 20 overs, showcasing aggressive stroke play and dominant middle-order partnerships. Oman, tasked with chasing a daunting target, faltered under consistent pressure and were bowled out for 139 in 18 overs. The emphatic victory provided Ireland with crucial points and a significant boost to their net run rate.

Ireland’s innings was anchored by captain Lorcan Tucker, who produced a scintillating unbeaten 94 from 51 deliveries, blending timing and power throughout his knock. Gareth Delany injected further momentum with a rapid 56 off 30 balls, while George Dockrell’s explosive 35 from just nine deliveries ensured a massive finish. Despite Shakeel Ahmed’s three early wickets, Ireland rebuilt confidently, highlighted by a decisive 101-run partnership that shifted control firmly in their favor.

Oman began their reply with intent, as Aamir Kaleem struck a brisk 50 and Hammad Mirza added 46 to keep hopes alive. However, Ireland’s bowlers maintained discipline and struck regularly to halt any sustained resistance. Joshua Little led the charge with three key wickets, supported by Matthew Humphreys and Barry McCarthy. As the required rate climbed steeply, Oman’s lower order succumbed to mounting pressure, sealing a comprehensive and well-earned triumph for Ireland.

In Match 22 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, Ireland produced a dominant batting display to defeat Oman by 96 runs in Group B. After being put in to bat, Ireland piled up a massive 235/5 in their 20 overs, registering one of the highest totals of the tournament. Oman, in response, struggled to maintain the required momentum and were bowled out for 139 in 18 overs. The comprehensive victory significantly improved Ireland’s net run rate and revived their campaign.

Ireland’s innings was headlined by a sensational unbeaten 94 from captain Lorcan Tucker, who blended power and precision throughout his 51-ball stay. Gareth Delany provided explosive support with a blistering 56 off 30 deliveries, while George Dockrell added a remarkable late cameo, smashing 35 off just nine balls. Despite early setbacks, Ireland recovered swiftly through strong partnerships, particularly the 101-run stand between Tucker and Delany that shifted the match decisively in their favor.

Although Shakeel Ahmed claimed three early wickets for Oman, Ireland’s middle order counterattacked effectively. Tucker’s calculated aggression ensured the scoring rate remained high, and Dockrell’s late onslaught propelled the total beyond the 230-mark. Oman’s bowlers struggled to contain the flow of runs, conceding heavily in the death overs. By the innings break, Ireland had firmly seized control, setting Oman an imposing target that demanded a near-perfect chase under mounting scoreboard pressure.

Ireland’s Bowlers Seal a Convincing Win

Oman began their chase positively, with Aamir Kaleem scoring a brisk 50 and Hammad Mirza contributing 46 to keep hopes alive. However, Ireland’s bowlers maintained discipline and struck at regular intervals to prevent any sustained partnership. Joshua Little led the attack brilliantly with three wickets, while Matthew Humphreys and Barry McCarthy chipped in with crucial breakthroughs to dismantle the middle order.

As wickets tumbled in clusters, Oman’s required rate spiraled beyond reach. Tight spells from George Dockrell and Gareth Delany added further pressure, and the lower order failed to mount a recovery. Oman were eventually bowled out for 139 in 18 overs, sealing Ireland’s emphatic 96-run triumph. The win showcased Ireland’s batting firepower and balanced bowling unit, reinforcing their credentials as serious contenders in the group stage.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 continues as Ireland prepare to take on Oman in Match 22 at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on Saturday, February 14. Ireland have had a tough beginning to their campaign, losing both of their opening matches and slipping to fourth place without a point. With their tournament hopes already under pressure, this fixture presents a crucial chance to bounce back. Relying on their experience and squad depth, Ireland will be determined to deliver a strong performance and revive their qualification ambitions.

Oman, captained by Jatinder Singh, are also searching for their first win after consecutive defeats in the competition. Although they have displayed competitive moments, they have struggled to maintain consistency across all departments. This encounter offers Oman an opportunity to regroup and produce a more disciplined, balanced effort. With both teams eager to open their account, the match carries high stakes, as a victory could restore confidence and keep their hopes of progressing in the tournament firmly alive.

In the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, Australia finally started their campaign against Ireland on February 11 at the R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. They are one of the favorites in the tournament and will have their eyes on the trophy this time.

Before entering the marquee event, Australia received a huge blow as skipper Mitchell Marsh was ruled out of the first game due to a testicular injury. Instead of him, Travis Head led the team against Ireland.

Meanwhile, the Aussies won the toss, batted first, and put up 182 runs on the board for Ireland to chase. In the absence of prime bowlers like Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, many had thought that the Australian bowling attack might suffer.

On the contrary, Nathan Ellis proved everyone wrong with his terrific spell in the ongoing match against Ireland. As we write, the right-arm pace has bowled four overs and has conceded just 12 runs, picking up four wickets.

Along with Ellis, Adam Zampa bowled brilliantly. In his quota of four overs, he conceded 23 runs and claimed four wickets. These two bowlers wreaked havoc on Ireland's batters, preventing them from settling at all.

Nathan Ellis dismisses Ross Adair, leaving the player in confusion

In the second over of the game, Ellis got his first wicket. Opening batter Ross Adair, who looked extremely confused as he couldn't read the ball, headed back to the pavilion with a faint smile. Ellis tricked him with a slower delivery as Adair tried to play it towards the onside.

Watch the video here:

However, to his surprise, the ball hits the pads and then the middle-stumps, sending the batter back to the pavilion. After Paul Stirling was retired hurt, Ireland were definitely counting on Adair to stay back and head the run chase. Soon after his dismissal, the batting lineup fell like a pack of cards. Adair was dismissed on 12 off 9 balls.

Chasing 184 runs, Ireland's batters failed to stitch partnerships, which is where they almost lost the game. While playing against a strong team like Australia, it's always important to spend some time on the crease and understand the bowlers.

George Dockrell did try to save the team down the order, but didn't get the support from the other end. With this loss, Ireland will be almost eliminated from the tournament.

Brief Scores: Australia 182/6 (Marcus Stoinis 45, Josh Inglis 37, Mark Adair 2/44) vs Ireland 115 (George Dockrell 41, Nathan Ellis 4/12)

Australia, the champions of the 2021 edition, will kick off their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 journey with a Group B clash against Ireland at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday, February 10. The encounter marks Australia’s first appearance in the tournament and offers them an early opportunity to set the tone. Ireland, meanwhile, will be eager to test themselves against one of the strongest sides in world cricket on a venue known to assist both batters and spinners as the match progresses. Led by Mitchell Marsh, Australia enter the tournament with a few notable challenges. The team will be without their famed pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood, a significant absence in any major competition. The legendary pacer Mitchell Starc has stepped away from the T20 format, while Cummins and Hazlewood were ruled out after failing to regain full fitness in time. Adding to their concerns, Australia are coming off a disappointing 0–3 series defeat against Pakistan, making a strong start in the World Cup even more crucial.

Ireland, meanwhile, will be featuring in their second outing of the tournament after suffering a defeat against Sri Lanka on February 8. With points already dropped, this encounter takes on added significance for them, as another setback could seriously dent their chances of advancing to the Super Eights in the expanded twenty-team competition.

Sri Lanka and Ireland will clash in ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 Match 6 on 8th February, as they each look to achieve an early foothold in their respective group stage. Sri Lanka have the advantage of having played many times in these types of pitches and will look to blend experienced players with other types of players in their team. Their strongest batters are likely to be Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis and Dasun Shanaka who should all have good runs throughout the series. Wanindu Hasaranga has a number of spinners on his team to give Sri Lanka some excellent options in late innings while Matheesha Pathirana possesses a lot of speed as an option to have later on in the innings.

Ireland will enter the match confident due to their aggressive play and the improved quality of their previous major tournament performances. Paul Stirling leads a number of impact players on Ireland's team who can quickly turn a game in Ireland's favour. Josh Little could make an early impact with the new ball, while Curtis Campher's value will be as an all-rounder who can contribute with his seam bowling. Because the pitches are likely to support batting and bowling, this match should be closely contested as both Sri Lanka and Ireland try to establish themselves in Group B.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Ireland (IRE) are all set to kick off their two-match T20I series, with the first game scheduled at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday, January 29. The two teams last faced each other in a T20I back in February 2022. The UAE will aim to make the most of their time in the middle ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. Captain Muhammad Waseem is expected to play a crucial role with the bat while leading the team tactically.

Ireland comes into the series with confidence after winning a three-match T20I series against Italy in Dubai, taking the contest 2-1. The side has used the preparation period effectively, giving players valuable match practice ahead of the World Cup. Ireland will aim to build on that momentum, experimenting with strategies and combinations to fine-tune their team. Both encounters will serve as a key opportunity for the Irish squad to assess conditions and sharpen skills ahead of the mega tournament starting February 7.

<![CDATA[Harry Tector reaches 1500 T20I runs as Ireland post record total against England]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/harry-tector-reaches-1500-t20i-runs-as-ireland-post-record-total-against-england/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/harry-tector-reaches-1500-t20i-runs-as-ireland-post-record-total-against-england/ Wed, 17 Sep 2025 19:53:46 GMT

In the rapid T20 International (T20I) arena, a place where consistency is as hard to achieve as a perfectly-timed switch hit, Harry Tector has been one of Ireland's few true dependable players. The 25-year-old middle-order batsman has recently surpassed 1500 runs in T20Is, reflecting his growing stature in the format.

This milestone not only emphasizes Tector's calmness and skill under pressure in T20 cricket, but it also differentiates him as one of the small group of established Irish players who seem to have consistently large returns in the short international format. As Ireland continues to exceed true meritocracies at the highest level, Tector's experience represents the balance of Irish cricket culture–the resilience, creativity, and competitiveness that now defines cricket in Ireland.

Tector's Journey to 1500: A Combination of Determination and Elegance

Coming from a cricketing family in Dublin (his brothers Jack and Tim have both captained Ireland represented the country at Under 19 level), Tector made his T20I debut in 2019 during the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier in the UAE. Although his appearances were limited at first, he soon secured a role in the middle order for Ireland.

In 2022, Tector's coming-of-age innings was an unbeaten 64 from 33 balls against India, which again showed his ability to accelerate under pressure during a rain-shortened match. As of September 2025, Tector has played roughly 70 T20Is and scored over 1500 runs with an average in the mid-20s and strike-rate above 120.

Highlights of Tector's Career

 • March 2024 vs Afghanistan - Unbeaten 56 (34); he led Ireland to victory.
 • June 2022 - Destructive 74 (42); displayed stylish shot-making along with brute power-hitting.
 • Franchise cricket - Played for Dublin Chiefs in the Euro T20 Slam (and other leagues), has a List A average over 40 that has translated into T20 performance.

Record Stand at Malahide: Ireland Hammer 196/3

Tector’s milestone coincided with another landmark today at Malahide, as Ireland posted their third-highest total against a Full-Member side:

After being asked to bat first by England’s youngest-ever captain Jacob Bethell, Ireland got off to a flying start. Paul Stirling (28) and Ross Adair (26) added 49 in the powerplay, but both fell trying to clear the ropes.

At 67/2 in the ninth over, Ireland looked vulnerable. But then came the defining stand,Harry Tector (61 off 43) and Lorcan Tucker (55 off 38)* stitched a 123-run partnership, Ireland’s highest-ever 3rd wicket stand in T20Is.

 • Lorcan Tucker – Passed 3000 international runs combined across formats.
 • Tector & Tucker – Produced a new Ireland record partnership for the 3rd wicket in T20I.

The Finance Critically Important Tector's milestone is timely for Irish cricket as with Paul Stirling nearing 3500 runs; and younger players like Tucker and Tector, Irish batting is beginning to have depth. Globally only 37 batters have scored in excess of 2000 T20I runs, so for 1500 runs, for full members Ireland to have four men is exceptional.

The question now is - will Harry Tector be the first of the new generation of players to score a hundred in T20I? If he continues his current form, it could be down the road.

Kevin O'Brien, who is also a former cricketer for the Irish national team, has condemned the recent racist assaults against Indians in Ireland, labelling them as hate-filled and a misrepresentation of the Irish people. He said that the attacks were sad because they don't reflect the core values and principles of this nation. He reiterated that acts like this breed hate and division to our identity and need to be condemned universally. O'Brien called for unity and respect while asking people to unite against racism and intolerance.

O'Brien made an emotional post on social media on Tuesday, August 12, thanking the Indian community in Ireland for making Ireland a better place socially and economically. The former all-rounder, who retired from International Cricket in 2022, advised Indians in Ireland that they are "valued and respected." He insisted that these hate-filled acts, are in no way indicative of how the Irish as a people are, and insisted on coming together for the respect, understanding and respect for all communities.

“I want to say how deeply saddened I am by the recent racist and hateful acts against Indians in Ireland. These attacks do not represent who we are as a people. Your contribution to Irish society is immense, and we deeply value everything you do," O’Brien said on X.

Irish Embasy in India reposted the video of Kevin O Brian

Kevin O’Brien’s video message was reshared by the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi, alongside a note reaffirming that the relationship between India and Ireland would remain strong despite the actions of a small minority. His remarks, along with the Embassy’s statement, come in the wake of several recent attacks on Indian nationals in different parts of Ireland. Both emphasised that these incidents, while concerning, do not define the true character or values of the Irish nation.

On Friday, the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi reiterated that racism and xenophobia have no place in Irish society. It assured that authorities would not tolerate such attacks and that measures would be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of the Indian community in Ireland. The Embassy also stressed that the actions of a few misguided individuals cannot undermine the deep friendship and mutual respect shared between the people of India and Ireland.

“A special message from Irish cricketer @KevinOBrien113. The bond between our countries will remain unshaken by the actions of a small few," the tweet reads.
