The Delhi Capitals (DC) narrowly missed out on a playoff spot in this year's Indian Premier League (IPL) competition, securing a commendable fifth position. The franchise finished their campaign on a high, on the back of an impressive six-wicket win over Punjab Kings in Jaipur. The Capitals emerged victorious in a high-voltage run-chase as Sameer Rizvi played a fighting quickfire cameo of 58 off 25 balls and remained unbeaten till the end to steer the team to a stiff target of 207 runs.

But despite kicking off their campaign with four wins on the trot, the team experienced a downward trend during the middle of the season and faced defeats in crucial fixtures, which significantly hampered their playoff chances. In a bid to revive their fortunes ahead of the upcoming season, the Capitals plan to implement a slew of changes. As many as seven players are set to be released from next year's auction as the franchise prepares to rope in some fresh faces to push their case for a maiden IPL title win.

Harry Brook and Jake Fraser McGurk are some of the big names set to be released

It is estimated that DC will enter the auction with a pursue value of INR 30 crore. Moreover, they are willing to let go of some of the big names who haven't quite performed up to their expectations. England's Harry Brook and Australia's Jake Fraser McGurk are some of the big names that the franchise is considering to axe. Furthermore, Afghanistan's Sediqullah Atal and India's Border Gavaskar Trophy warrior from the 2021-22 series, T Natarajan, are also likely to be released.

Other players that are set to be released are Mustafizur Rahman, Dushmantha Chameera, and South Africa's T20 batting icon, Faf du Plessis. While the sources say that FAF's case is still pending, the other six players are on DC's wishlist to be released prior to the next auction. The franchise will be assessing FAF's overall performance in other leagues around the world before making that call.

Looking back at DC's recent IPL campaign, the team finished with 15 points from 14 matches, with seven wins, six losses, and one match abandoned due to rain. Despite a disappointing exit from the IPL 2025, the team demonstrated resilience and potential throughout the season. The team's ability to compete against top-tier opponents and the emergence of young talents like Sameer Rizvi offer hope for future seasons.

The Delhi Capitals' (DC) IPL 2025 campaign could be heading for serious turbulence. At least three of their six available overseas players are unlikely to return for the remainder of the tournament, with Australian sensation Jake Fraser-M cGurkofficially opting out.

Fraser-McGurk, who lit up the first half of the IPL with explosive batting performances, has told the franchise that he will not be returning to India. The update came after DC contacted all their overseas players on May 13 to check availability from May 17 onwards.

According to a report from ESPNcricinfo, the young opener has decided to stay back in Australia following the disturbing events that occurred in Dharamshala earlier this month. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held discussions with Cricket Australia (CA) in an attempt to facilitate the return of Australian players, the emotional impact appears to have outweighed cricketing commitments.

DC face uncertainty as key foreign players may miss rest of IPL 2025

Mitchell Starc, another big-ticket Australian name, is also reportedly reluctant to rejoin his IPL franchise. While he hasn’t officially pulled out, sources suggest he is "highly unlikely" to return. Starc’s wife and Australian women’s team captain Alyssa Healy recently detailed the harrowing experiences in Dharamshala, providing insight into why some players are choosing not to return.

Meanwhile, South African batter Tristan Stubbs may also leave the IPL early. With the World Test Championship (WTC) Final scheduled for early June, Cricket South Africa (CSA) could recall Stubbs by May 26, in accordance with the original No Objection Certificate (NOC) terms.

There’s still some hope for DC, as veteran Faf du Plessis, who is not bound by any NOC constraints due to his international retirement, might make a return. However, he hasn’t provided a final word yet.

Among the remaining overseas players, Donovan Ferreira, Dushmantha Chameera, and Afghanistan’s Sediqullah Atal are expected to rejoin the squad and be available for selection.

With playoff hopes on the line, DC will need quick clarityand possibly reinforcements if they are to stay competitive in the business end of the tournament.

<![CDATA[IPL 2025: Why is Jake Fraser-McGurk not playing in starting XI in GT vs DC Match 35?]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ipl-2025-why-is-jake-fraser-mcgurk-not-playing-in-starting-xi-in-gt-vs-dc-match-35/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ipl-2025-why-is-jake-fraser-mcgurk-not-playing-in-starting-xi-in-gt-vs-dc-match-35/ Sat, 19 Apr 2025 18:26:58 GMT

In a high-voltage encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Delhi Capitals made a bold move by excluding Jake Fraser-McGurk from their starting XI for Match 35 of IPL 2025 against Gujarat Titans. The decision comes after the explosive Australian batter struggled to make an impact in the tournament so far.

Delhi Capitals, riding high after a thrilling Super Over win against Rajasthan Royals, currently sit at the top of the table with five wins from six games. Their solid run has been a mix of strong leadership, clinical bowling, and key contributions from both experienced and young players. Meanwhile, the Gujarat Titans are looking to bounce back after their four-match winning streak was halted by a defeat to the Lucknow Super Giants.

Changes in the Lineup

With Fraser-McGurk sidelined, Delhi has reshuffled their combination, bringing in a more balanced mix of local talent and seasoned names. In contrast, Gujarat have brought back experienced pacer Ishant Sharma, strengthening their bowling unit. The decision to bench Fraser-McGurk underlines Delhi’s push for consistency as they look to maintain momentum in the business end of the season.

The Arun Jaitley Stadium saw a dramatic moment during the 29th match of IPL 2025 as the Mumbai Indians traveled to play the Delhi Capitals in a tight fight. Delhi chose to bowl and Mumbai openers started aggressively, being headed by Ryan Rickelton's 41 from 25 deliveries. The South African left-handed batsman played the ball sweetly, setting the pace early on, before being foxed by a traditional Kuldeep Yadav googly.

As the innings went on, Mumbai appeared to be in command. Tilak Varma, who walked in after the loss of a few wickets, stole the initiative with a positive mindset. He attacked the DC bowlers and started to pick up steam when the turning point of the innings almost came in the 13th over.

Costly Confusion in the Outfield

Vipraj Nigam, the left-arm bowler, floated one away outside off to Varma, who tried to slog it out over long-on. What ought to have been a routine catch was turned into a comic-tragic situation. Tristan Stubbs and Jake Fraser-McGurk were rushing in towards the ball, Stubbs from long-on and McGurk coming from deep midwicket. The South African slowed down because he was nervous about colliding with his Aussie mate mid-pitch. That moment’s delay left him mispositioned, and despite stretching for the catch, he spilled it. To make matters worse, the ball trickled over the ropes for four, rubbing salt into Delhi’s wounds. While DC’s fielding faltered, their spin duo held firm. Kuldeep Yadav was impressive again, dismissing both Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav (40 off 28), while Nigam accounted for key wickets of former skipper Rohit Sharma and current skipper Hardik Pandya.

Even with their batting depth, MI are struggling in IPL 2025. With just one win from five matches and being ninth in the table, each match is a do-or-die encounter. DC, by contrast, have four wins and are as close to unbeaten as anyone can possibly be and look like a serious title contender.

Stubbs' missed chance may not hurt DC on the scoreboard today, but these moments tend to swing momentum in T20 cricket, and Delhi will hope it does not come back to bite them.

Jake Fraser McGurk was stunned after experiencing the madness of craze for the former Indian captain MS Dhoni on the field.

The 22-year-old right-handed Australian batter Jake Fraser McGurk made his IPL debut in the 2024 edition. He finished the tournament as the third-leading run-scorer for Delhi Capitals in the season with 330 runs in nine innings with an average of 36.66 and a strike rate of incredible 234.04. He scored four half-centuries in that innings.

I couldn't believe that it was for one guy: Jake Fraser McGurk

In a recent podcast, Jake revealed his special experience during the Delhi Capitals’ match against the defending champions Chennai Super Kings. It was the 13th game of the IPL 2024 at Visakhapatnam, where Delhi Capitals won by 20 runs.

Jake Fraser McGurk said via Unplayable Podcast, "The first ball MS Dhoni hit for a six, it was louder than when he walked in - Whole 30 minutes period was one of the loudest noises I have ever heard. I couldn't believe that it was for one guy."

MS Dhoni scored 20 runs in the last over

While Delhi Capitals scored 191/5 in 20 overs, Chennai Super Kings only scored 171/6.

Coming to bat at no.8, former CSK captain Dhoni started with a four. In fact, he hit three fours of that over. In the final over, while CSK required almost impossible 41 runs, Dhoni slammed two fours and two sixes. Spending just the last 22 minutes of the match as a batter, Dhoni scored 37 not out off 16 balls with the help of four fours and three sixes.

Jake wasn’t in the playing XI for the game as he made his IPL debut later.

Jake made his international cricket debut this year as he has played three ODIs and four T20Is. The youngster holds the record for the fastest century in the List A cricket format scoring a 29-ball century for South Australia against Tasmania at the Marsh Cup.
