In IPL 2025 Match 40, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), led by Rishabh Pant, fell by eight wickets to Delhi Capitals (DC) at Ekana Cricket Stadium on 22 April, 2025. DC chased LSG's 160/8 after 20 overs in just 17.5 overs, finishing at 161/2. Below are the main reasons for LSG's defeat:

1. Poor Batting Performance and Early Collapse:

The Lucknow Supergiants collapsed with the bat against the Delhi Capitals, only posting a total of 160/8 in their 20-over innings on a red-soil pitch, which turned out to be highly spin-friendly. Several early wickets put Lucknow behind the eight-ball, and key players like Pant failed to produce results (106 runs in seven innings). Delhi Capitals Mukesh Kumar took the most advantage, obtaining 4 wickets and removing multiple framers and batsmen who contributed heavily to the Lucknow Supergiants’ innings.

2. Ineffective Bowling Strategy Against DC's Chase:

The bowling effort by Lucknow Supergiants was ineffective and failed to restrict a total of 160. Their opposition scored 161.5 in 17.5 overs. Even though Aiden Markram obtained two wickets, their entire pace and spin attack, which consisted of Ravi Bishnoi and Avesh Khan, was off-target and unthreatening. In the end, Lucknow's captain Pant was unable to enable his team to enact better strategies against the run-scoring duo of DC’s Abishek Porel and KL Rahul, who both scored 50+ runs.

3. Questionable Team Selection and Tactical Decisions:

Certain line-up and planning decisions made by Lucknow lead to them not winning the match. A lack of use of Ayush Badoni, who can be decisive in the role of impact substitute and is reliable as a finisher. Various batting orders with Pant free-falling to the bottom of the order also reduced Lucknow’s chance for success. Contrastingly, any lull in action or pace from their own bowlers was made worse by Lucknow never adapting to the bowling strategies of Delhi, matching the performance of Mukesh Kumar over his two spells, or whether that changing pace/missing the pace of Mayank Yadav from injury/location even when well-planned in strategist plans.

In a riveting encounter in IPL 2025 Match 40, Delhi Capitals (DC) showed a complete performance to defeat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 8 wickets with 13 balls to spare. From disciplined bowling to clinical batting, the Capitals were in control throughout the game, and with the emphatic win, they rose further up the tournament table.

Lucknow Super Giants Innings

Batting first, the Super Giants collected 159 runs for 6 wickets off 20 overs. Aiden Markram scored 52 runs off 33 balls while playing some consummate shots. He had the able support of Mitchell Marsh with 45 runs off 36 balls, and then Ayush Badoni contributed a handy 36 runs off 21 balls at the end to build their total. The Capitals' bowlers stuck to their guns, though, with Mukesh Kumar being the best of the lot with his excellent bowling spell of 4 wickets for 33 runs from 4 overs. Mitchell Starc and Dushmantha Chameera were the others with 1 wicket.

Delhi Capitals Innings

In reply, the Capitals chased down the score without too much drama, finishing 161/2 in just 17.5 overs. KL Rahul's innings of 57* off 42 balls was calm and composed. He saw a good batting performance from Abishek Porel, who aggressively scored 51 runs from just 36 balls. Axar Patel finished in style with a blazing score of 34* runs off 20 balls. The Capitals' top order demolished the LSG bowlers, Aiden Markram being the only one who made an impact with the ball at two wickets for 30 runs off three overs. The rest of the bowlers bowled poorly and failed to get a wicket.

LSG vs DC: Post Match Reactions

Mukesh Kumar (Player of the Match): Mukesh Kumar received Player of the Match due to his excellent bowling performance. He went on to say about his process, saying that talking to Chameera and Starc before the game to understand how the pitch behaved was really important for him. He said the ball stopped a bit, so he focused on what lengths to hit and how to mix the variations up, which worked for him. He thinks his best ball was getting the wicket of Mitchell Marsh, a really big wicket for him and his team. Mukesh said he was really happy with the performance, especially due to struggling earlier in the season, and hoped to keep this momentum going.

Axar Patel (Delhi Capitals Captain): Axar Patel said it was an up-and-down game. He said the team did not take wickets in the powerplay but managed to pull it back due to all bowlers chipping in. Axar said he had a finger injury, but he felt better for this game, and he joined back for the power play. He emphasized how important fielding is and that dropped catches have been an issue. On batting at number 4, he said he played to his strengths and tried to hit some specific bowlers.

Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants Captain): Rishabh Pant said they were 20 runs short and that the toss and pitch conditions in Lucknow are always a factor. He said it took too long to get 30/31 runs, as it allows the bowlers to settle and find rhythm. Pant said the loss was tough, but they regrouped for their next match, but he emphasized that if they can find their potential, everything else will be taken care of. He added when their top 3 batsmen score, teams are always pressured.

Before the Indian Premier League fixture between the Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals, the spotlight was on KL Rahul and Sanjiv Goenka, who had made headlines for the wrong reasons in the previous seasons.

Talking about KL Rahul, it was a special night for him as the DC star was playing against his former side and also scored the winning runs by hitting a six. Meanwhile, KL Rahul also hogged the internet for his post-match antics as he ignored LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka.

But Rahul, in his new home with the Capitals, proved to be the difference as he scored a measured half-century, helped DC get a dominant win over LSG, that too at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. After the game, whilst everyone was shaking hands, a moment between Rahul and the LSG owner was seen on video on social media, which went viral.

Watch video:-

What had happened between Rahul & Goenka?

The feud between KL Rahul and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) management, headed by owner Sanjiv Goenka, intensified after the team's poor performance in the last IPL season. After their crushing loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Goenka was visibly upset and had a heated argument with Rahul, which was recorded and widely shared on social media. The exchange brought out the increasing tension between the two, and it soon became apparent that their relationship had turned sour. The open conflict between the LSG administration and Rahul led to questions regarding the captaincy of the team and its future. Rahul, who had captained LSG, had struggled with erratic performances throughout the season, resulting in mounting pressure from both the media and supporters. Goenka, who was known for his no-nonsense attitude, made it clear that he was disappointed with the team's performances under Rahul's command, particularly during important phases of the tournament.

During the post-season, Rahul was decided not to be kept for the season of IPL 2025, a decision that surprised people as he was among the top players in the league. This was the end of his connection with LSG. The team instead went in a different direction, with leadership changes and a new vision for the team. But Rahul's career was far from over. His potential and value in the market were something to be reckoned with, and before long, Delhi Capitals stepped in and paid a premium ₹14 crore for him during the IPL 2025 auction. The switch provided Rahul the opportunity to go on with his IPL career but ended an experience with LSG as well.Though the division between Rahul and Goenka was a prominent subject of discourse, it was also a reminder of the strains and intricacies of IPL management. Players and franchises are constantly under scrutiny, and even a minor misstep can result in dramatic changes to team dynamics. As Rahul continues with Delhi Capitals, most will want to know how he will get along with his new team and if the change in surroundings will assist him in regaining his best form.

KL Rahul claimed a rare achievement at the Ekana Cricket Stadium during the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) vs. Delhi Capitals (DC) clash on April 22. LSG started the match with fluid motion but lost their momentum when Mukesh Kumar struck 4 scalps. LSG was restricted to only 159 in 20 overs; DC chased down the total with 8 wickets in hand and 13 balls to spare.

During the toss, both skippers— Rishabh Pant from LSG and Axar Patel from DC—shared the same thoughts about the surface. Both the captains wanted to chase in the second innings. Patel, with the better luck, won the toss and elected to field first.

As predicted, the pitch of Ekana Cricket Stadium was getting more batting-friendly as the second innings approached. Abishek Porel, as an opener, did his job in the top batting order of Delhi Capitals with 51 runs. His opening partner, Karun Nair, with only 15, departed early, but that did not help LSG bowlers enough to shift the flow of the match. KL Rahul and Axer Patel safely drive their team to the right destination.

Cricket fans were curious to see how Rahul performed against his former franchise. Tonight, he was unstoppable against Rishabh Pant's Lucknow Super Giants. Sanjiv Goenka was present in the gallery to witness his team falling apart in front of an in-form Lokesh Rahul.

Rahul, with his 42-ball 57* run innings, achieved an epic record at the Ekana Stadium. The star batter becomes the fastest batter to complete 5000 runs in Indian Premier League history.

The 40th match of IPL 2025 was played between Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. In this match, Delhi Capitals defeated Lucknow Supergiants by 8 wickets and achieved their sixth win of the season. Lucknow had set a target of 160 runs in front of Delhi Capitals. In response, Delhi Capitals achieved the target at the loss of two wickets.

Talking about this match, Lucknow Supergiants batted first in this match. Batting first, the start of the Lucknow Supergiants team was very good. The pair of Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh made a brilliant partnership of 87 runs in 60 balls for the first wicket. In which Markram played an innings of 52 runs in 33 balls with the help of two fours and three sixes. Apart from this, Mitchell Marsh scored 45 runs in 36 balls which included 3 fours and 1 six. But after this, Nicholas Pooran, who came to bat at number three, was bowled by Starc after scoring 9 runs in five balls.

After this, Abdul Samad, who was promoted to bat, was also out after scoring two runs. David Miller scored 14 and Ayush Badoni scored 36 runs. Rishabh Pant came to bat quite low in this match and returned to the pavilion without opening the account in two balls. Mukesh Kumar took four wickets for 33 runs in four overs from the Delhi Capitals team. Apart from this, Starc and Chameera also got one wicket each.

KL Rahul played a brilliant innings while chasing the target

Chasing the target of 160 runs, Delhi Capitals team opener Abhishek Porel scored 51 runs in this match. Karun Nair scored 15 runs in 9 balls. KL Rahul also played an innings of 57 runs in 42 balls in this match. Aiden Markram took two wickets in this match.

Rishabh Pant left fans scratching their heads during Lucknow Super Giant's innings against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025. The match is being played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. LSG had a solid start with the bat. Openers Mitchell Marsh (45) and Aiden Markram (52) gave the team a flying start, adding 87 runs and putting Delhi under pressure early on. Nicholas Pooran came in at No.3, and everyone expected Pant to walk in next. After all, he usually bats at No.4.

But to everyone’s surprise, Abdul Samad came in at four. That move didn’t work out. Even after that, Pant didn’t come in. David Miller and Ayush Badoni were sent ahead of him. The LSG captain finally walked out to bat in the last over when only two balls were left in the innings.
Unfortunately, it didn’t go well.

Pant missed the first ball while trying to charge down the pitch. On the second, he tried a reverse scoop, but the ball hit his pads and rolled onto the stumps. He was bowled for a two-ball duck.
It was the first time in 113 IPL innings that Pant batted as low as No.7. The last time he batted that low was way back in his debut season in 2016.

LSG ended up scoring 159 runs. After the blazing start from the openers, they couldn’t keep the momentum going. Ayush Badoni’s unbeaten 36 helped them post a fighting total, but the middle-order slump and Pant’s late entry raised quite a few eyebrows.

A total of beyond 200 was looking within the range of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) when openers Aiden Markram (52) and Mitchell Marsh (45) were well settled on Ekana Cricket Ground, toying with Delhi Capitals (DC) bowlers for fun until Mukesh Kumar pulled out his IPL career-best performance.

Mukesh Kumar's 138 case pinpoint yorker fooled Marsh and scattered the bails as well as the LSG's entire batting unit; that was the moment when the first innings of LSG vs. DC took an unpredictable turn. Marsh was batting at 45 of 36 balls, and LSG was on 87 when the Indian pace bowler dared to speed in maximum impact.

Lucknow Super Giants went from 87 for 1 in 10 overs to 159/6 in 20 overs, depicting the brilliant bowling performance of the right-arm medium pacer. After departing Marsh, Mukesh nailed it again against Abdul Samad, Ayush Badoni, and LSG skipper Rishabh Pant.

Like Marsh, Badoni (36) also was exchanging with boundaries when Kumar made him dismantle. All over against LSG tonight (April 22), Mukesh Kumar rounded up his 4-over bowling spell for 4 wickets in exchange for 33 runs and an 8.33 economy rate.

Watch the wicket-taking delivery here:

A pure example of a classic yorker form a fast bowler

The way Kumar knocked down Marsh's wicket was an example of true craftsmanship from a pace bowler. The delivery was slightly over 138 km/h, swinging in, and at the last combed the off stump. The Australian batter had nothing to do but to observe the wheel of events.

<![CDATA[Why DC drop Mohit Sharma for Dushmantha Chameera in the IPL 2025 LSG vs DC match?]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/why-dc-drop-mohit-sharma-for-dushmantha-chameera-in-the-ipl-2025-dc-vs-lsg-match/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/why-dc-drop-mohit-sharma-for-dushmantha-chameera-in-the-ipl-2025-dc-vs-lsg-match/ Tue, 22 Apr 2025 14:14:54 GMT

In the 40th match of the IPL 2025 season, the Delhi Capitals (DC) are playing against the Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG) at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. DC's captain, Axar Patel, won the toss and decided to bowl first. Along with this announcement, he also announced a change in the playing 11; Dushmantha Chameera has replaced Mohit Sharma. On the contrary, LSG decided to stay with the same winning team that won their last match, keeping to a similar lineup.

The change to bring Chameera into the playing XI may have raised some eyebrows in the first place, but this was clearly a tactical choice made by the DC management. It appears that after assessing the conditions of the game, the type of pitch, and analyses of the opposition, Chameera's entry into the playing XI makes sense.

Why Dushmantha Chameera Was Picked Over Mohit Sharma

The main reason for this change is the pitch at the Ekana Stadium. The pitch we have seen has supported fast bowlers throughout the season. The pitch has a lot of bounce and pace, and fast bowlers who can bowl fast have had some success. We could see Chameera's pace and bounce make this pitch a better fit for the playing XI and give some more firepower to DC's bowling lineup.

Also Read: IPL 2025: SRH vs MI Match 41 - A Head to Head breakdown

Another significant element was, in addition to Chameera's fine form, his strong record against LSG opener Nicholas Pooran. Chameera has dismissed Pooran three times in four innings in previous IPL encounters. Pooran has always struggled against fast bowlers bowling 140 km/h+ pretty comfortably, which Chameera most certainly does. With Delhi's profile against Pooran, they had an upper hand facilitating Chameera's addition. Moreover, Chameera has played at the Ekana Stadium, where he played for LSG in the 2022 season. Having played at home previously, Chameera will have a good sense of the pitch conditions and the environment in which he will be needing to execute his bowling plans.

Altogether, it was a logical and well-thought-out decision by Axar Patel and the Delhi Capitals to bring Chameera in for this match to give themselves the best chance to counter LSG's superb batting depth.

LSG vs DC Probable Winners:

Lucknow Super Giants have had a patchy season, relying heavily on Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran to carry them through with their bats. Nonetheless, they've found ways to stay in the game, including victories in difficult situations, such as their most recent against Rajasthan. In contrast, the Delhi Capitals appear to be more settled in the IPL 2025. Despite their recent defeat, they have the advantage going into this match. They've already defeated LSG once and appear more organized overall. However, Lucknow has the home advantage, and if Marsh, Markram, and Pooran get going, their attack should be able to compete. Even so, Delhi appears to be the better choice right now. Considering the team combination, Delhi Capitals is expected to win this match.
