When India’s left-handed opening batter, Yashasvi Jaiswal, celebrates a half-century during the second Test against South Africa at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, India was in a strong position of around 100 runs for the loss of one wicket. But they perhaps didn’t expect the turn of the tables in the next few overs of the game.

There were a few nonsense shots from the India batters including the one from Sai Sudharsan, who pulled the short ball from Simon Harmer into the hands of the leg sided fielder, who grabbed a fine catch to send India’s number three back into the hut or the one from Dhurv Jurel, who was bounced out by Marco Jansen at the stroke of the tea break.

And the same trend continued even after the break as India’s stand-in captain for the contest, Rishabh Pant, looked to charge down the ground against Jansen at the start of the second session. But the ball moved a little and took the feather of his blade as the wicket-keeper, Kyle Verryenne, grabbed an easy catch.

Watch: Rishabh Pant dismissed on 7 to Marco Jansen during IND vs SA 2nd Test in Guwahati

India made a solid start with the bat, thanks to the 65-run opening stand with Jaiswal collecting a fine knock of 58 runs in 97 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries and one six at a strike rate of nearly 60, while KL Rahul, on 22, got an outside edge into the hands of the slip fielder against the left-arm spinner, Keshav Maharaj.

After Pant’s dismissal, Nitish Kumar Reddy also took the path back to the pavilion on 10 runs, while Ravindra Jadeja couldn’t handle the short ball on six and went back to the dressing room.

SA had already posted 489 runs on the board in the first innings thanks to Senuran Muthusamy, who clubbed a fine century, while Jansen nailed a fine knock of 93 runs off 91 deliveries at a strike rate of 102.20 with the help of six boundaries and seven sixes. Their top order also got starts, even though they couldn’t get a big score.

South Africa is facing two injury concerns before they travel to Guwahati for the second Test against India at the Barsapara Stadium. News18 CricketNext has learned that off-spinner Simon Harmer has a shoulder injury, and left-arm seamer Marco Jansen is also carrying a niggle. Both players went for check-ups at Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata, the same hospital where Shubman Gill was treated.

It is still not clear if these injuries will affect their participation in the Guwahati Test, starting on November 22. Harmer and Jansen were two of South Africa’s best performers in their historic 30-run win over India at the Eden Gardens. Harmer took 4/30 and 4/21, while Jansen picked up 3/25 and 2/15 in the two innings as they bowled India out for 189 and 93.

Harmer bowled almost 30 overs in the match, the most by any player from both teams. South Africa hope his injury is not serious and that he will be fit for the Guwahati Test, which is expected to help spinners again. The 36-year-old off-spinner is important because India may once more play a batting lineup with many left-handers.

If Harmer is ruled out, South Africa can bring in left-arm spin all-rounder Senuran Muthuswamy. Kagiso Rabada can replace Jansen if needed.

India is facing the Gill Injury Issue

India also has their own injury concern. Shubman Gill suffered a neck problem in Kolkata and was in the hospital for several hours. At first, it looked like a small sprain, but it turned out to be more serious and needed specialist care.

Gill has been discharged but has not joined the team yet. The team continues to practice at Eden Gardens. As per reports, all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has joined the squad

During India’s previous Test trip to England for five Tests, it was Mohammad Siraj who strapped his shoes on every single day of the game and kept running in with a lot of energy. When Jasprit Bumrah wasn’t around during the fifth game in South London, he inspired the Blue Brigade to victory. And he aimed to continue the same success during the home Protea series.

However, it was a wayward start for Bumrah, whose first leg-side delivery was tucked into the leg side by Ryan Rickelton. Since then, both the opening batters- including Aiden Markram- cracked several boundaries against Siraj to take them to a flying start with the bat. Mohammad Siraj left the field in anger.

But in the second spell of the Hyderabad-born, there was a massive difference in the performance of the bowler, who found the right line and length to channel India’s brutal comeback into the clash. He changed the direction of the contest with the double-wicket over of Marco Jansen and Kyle Verreyne.

On the first ball of the 45th over of the first innings, Siraj trapped the Protea wicket-keeper batter, Verreynne, for 16 runs before the stumps. The right-handed batter was late to bring his bat down as the ball brushed the back of the bat with the angle into the off-side. The impact was in front of the stumps as ball-tracing confirmed it would have crashed into the middle stump.

Two balls later, Marco Janse was late on the shot. The lanky batter covered the stumps, but it wasn’t enough to stop the ball from Siraj's jag ball, and it sneaked through the bat-pad gap to hit the top of the stump.

The Proteas suddenly found themselves seven down for 150-odd runs. Earlier in the morning, Jasprit Bumrah was on fire with the wickets of Markram and Rickelton, while the left-arm wrist spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, also collected two vital wickets in the innings so far.

Lord's, London, June 11, 2025 – The World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025 saw a game-changing moment at 41.6 overs when Marco Jansen’s spectacular reflex catch at first slip ended Steve Smith’s gritty 66. South Africa, opting to bowl under overcast conditions, pounced early through Kagiso Rabada, dismissing Usman Khawaja (0) and Cameron Green (4) in the seventh over, reducing Australia to 12/2. Jansen then dented Australia, getting rid of Marnus Labuschagne (17) and Travis Head (11) before lunch, with Kyle Verreynne's diving catch sending Head packing, leaving Australia at 67/4.

After lunch, Smith and Beau Webster formed a vital 79-run partnership, with Smith's 42nd Test fifty grounding Australia's innings. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma’s tactical genius shone through when he introduced part-timer Aiden Markram in the 42nd over. Markram tossed up a tempting ball outside off, inviting Smith to play an expansive cover drive. The above-the-eyeline delivery saw Smith get a thick outside edge, soaring to first slip from where Jansen clutched it tight after a double juggle on the third attempt, an act of brilliance that left Smith regretting a century gone astray.

Jansen's catch ended a perilous stand, restoring the balance in favor of South Africa. Australia, 146/5, relied on Webster's unscathed 55 to stage a comeback, but Rabada and Jansen-led South African pace attack kept the pressure relentless. The Lord's pitch supporting seamers promised an enthralling encounter.

Following tea, South Africa struck once more, with Keshav Maharaj getting Alex Carey (23) through a mistimed reverse sweep, leaving Australia at 194/6. Rabada then got rid of Pat Cummins for 1, further denting Australia at 199/7. Webster, rock-steady at 55*, and Mitchell Starc were left with a formidable task. With Rabada (3/35) and Jansen (2/49) spearheading the attack, South Africa is in control of this electrifying WTC Final, with Australia struggling to remain in the hunt.

Current Score: Australia 199/7 (52.4 overs)—Beau Webster 55*, Mitchell Starc 0*; Kagiso Rabada 3/35, Marco Jansen 2/49.

Punjab Kings has to overcome multiple hurdles before they set a playing XI to face Mumbai Indians in a crucial match that can decide the top 2 teams. While their prime spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is uncertain about the MI clash today due to a possible wrist injury, Marco Jansen has already left India to join South Africa's national camp.

South Africa is scheduled to face Australia for the World Test Championship Final (WTC final) on June 11. Prior to that high-voltage match, the cricket governing body of South Africa asked their squad players to join the camp, including Marco Jansen, for preparations.

Behind the recent dominating performance of Shreyas Iyer's Punjab Kings, Marco Jansen is one of the main reasons. The tall South African pacer was a constant performer for the team. The left-arm fast bowler played 13 IPL 2025 matches and took 14 wickets with a 9.26 economy rate; in the last 5 matches, 6 batters fell short against Jansen.

Punjab Kings already has someone who can take the place

With out the service of the pacer, Iyer and Ricky Ponting have to revise their strategy for the Mumbai Indians match. Kyle Jamieson can be the best man in the squad to replace Jansen. Jamieson signed in for Punjab Kings for IPL 2025 as a replacement for Lockie Ferguson at his reserve price of INR 2 crore.

The right-arm pacer from New Zealand can generate extra pace using his height and has previous experience playing in the Indian Premier League. He was bought by Royal Challengers Bengaluru at INR 15 crore in the 2021 IPL auction and has also been a part of the Chennai Super Kings setup. So far he has played 9 matches to take 9 wickets with a 9.60 economy rate.

<![CDATA[South Africa vs Pakistan:South Africa Clinches Dominant 10-Wicket Victory Over Pakistan]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/south-africa-clinches-dominant-10-wicket-victory-over-pakistan-south-africa-vs-pakistan/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/south-africa-clinches-dominant-10-wicket-victory-over-pakistan-south-africa-vs-pakistan/ Mon, 06 Jan 2025 22:27:19 GMT

South Africa 615 (Rickelton, Bavuma 106, Verreynne 100; Abbas 3-94) and 61 for no loss (Bedingham 47*) defeated Pakistan 194 (Babar 58; Rabada 3-55) and 478 (Masood 145, Babar 81; Rabada 3-115) by ten wickets.

South Africa moved to the WTC final after an easy ten-wicket win against Pakistan, which was their seventh win in a row. The win took about two and a half days, mainly because of good ball throwing, finally getting Pakistan out for 478 in their third round of hitting. Pakistan's leader, Shan Masood, hit 145 runs, helped by Babar Azam's 81, but even with several good hits, they had to bat again after being down by a large amount. South Africa needed just 58 runs to win and easily obtained those in 7.1 rounds.

However, Pakistan made South Africa wait longer than imagined. When South Africa made Pakistan bat again, being ahead by 421 on Sunday, they thought they would not have to throw many more balls. Instead they threw for 122.1 more rounds. Masood, with 102 overnight, kept hitting well with Babar for a 205 run start.

South Africa felt annoyance that day, particularly with an 88-run partnership. But Keshav Maharaj found a way to break through and South Africa kept taking players out for the rest of the evening. Earlier, Marco Jansen got the night hitter, Khurram Shahzad, out soon and Kagiso Rabada took out Kamran Ghulam. Maharaj threw the ball for almost the entire session, with a break when he changed which side he threw from.

His different speeds and throwing styles, along with a spinning ball, were tough for the hitters to successfully deal with. In theory but not necessarily in fact the ways Maharaj bowled made sense but the wickets came from fast throwing. Let us engage in observing that this outcome, like the next final result, is possibly, but by no means probably, due to Maharaj. Shahzad finished his part but wasn't proficient at staying at the plate for long. A throw from Jansen became higher than he expected, and Shahzad weakly hit the ball to Maharaj who was near third base. Ghulam, not calm, made the men in close look nervous during his time batting. He was actually lucky to still be batting, since he swung hard at a faraway throw from Rabada and the ball flew right through the hands of David Bedingham who was near first base.

The wicket was always imminent. Kagiso Rabada's growing frustration from his lack of wickets and general indiscipline—having bowled another four no-balls this morning—was evident. Just after overstepping, he bowled a beauty that nipped back off the seam into Kamran Ghulam, cleanly bowled him out off middle and off stumps. It was a fitting way to bring up his 50th Test wicket at Newlands, and the roar that followed highlighted how much it meant to him. Saud Shakeel and Shan Masood made South Africa work hard for every wicket, but the hosts could have had one more before lunch. Kwena Maphaka bowled a lovely delivery that squared up Shakeel and hit his pad, but South Africa chose not to review it. Hawk-Eye later revealed the ball would have hit leg stump.

Maphaka then ended Masood's long vigil at the crease with a delivery that shaped away off the seam and kept low, hitting the batter's front pad. Umpire Nitin Menon thought it was missing off stump, but when South Africa reviewed, Hawk-Eye confirmed it was hitting, leading to a furious response from Masood. His protests continued as he slowly walked off the field and into the dressing room. This marked a strong start for South Africa after lunch. Shakeel was dismissed shortly after the resumption in similar fashion to the first innings: caught in the slips off a drive at Rabada. With Masood gone, there was a looming threat that Pakistan might collapse, as they have done recently.

Six years ago, at the same ground, Pakistan's third innings ended on the third evening, with South Africa needing just 41 runs to secure the series victory. The game concluded on the fourth morning after stumps were called.

Player of the match: Ryan Rickelton

Player of the series: Marco Jansen

This time, however, the South African openers ensured the match didn’t stretch into the next day. David Bedingham provided a quick boost with a scintillating unbeaten knock of 47 off 30 balls. His efforts helped South Africa wrap up the win in just 43 balls, making what had been a long wait in the field culminate in a routine and efficient victory.

South Africa delivered a commanding performance at Kingsmead, Durban, to secure a massive 233-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test of the series. Despite losing the toss and being put under early pressure by Sri Lanka’s seamers, the Proteas rallied through skipper Temba Bavuma's gritty 70 and valuable lower-order contributions, posting a modest first-innings total of 191. Sri Lanka seemed poised to capitalize but crumbled spectacularly, recording their lowest-ever Test score of just 42, thanks to Marco Jansen’s devastating 7/13. This collapse handed South Africa a significant lead, setting the stage for a dominant second innings.

In their second essay, South Africa piled on the runs with centuries from Tristan Stubbs (122) and Bavuma (113), amassing a daunting lead of 515. Despite resilient efforts from Dhananjaya de Silva and Dinesh Chandimal in the fourth innings, Sri Lanka fell well short, bowled out for 282 as Jansen’s career-best 11/86 stole the spotlight. The victory not only gave the Proteas a 1-0 series lead but also showcased their ability to dominate in challenging conditions, leaving Sri Lanka with much to ponder ahead of the decider in Gqeberha.

Breakdown of Macro Jansen match winning spells against SriLanka

Marco Jansen etched his name into the annals of cricketing glory with a stunning 11-wicket haul against Sri Lanka at Kingsmead, Durban, during the first Test. The left-arm pacer, known for his height and ability to generate awkward bounce, dismantled the Sri Lankan batting line-up with precision and skill. His career-best figures of 11/86 were the cornerstone of South Africa's emphatic 233-run victory, showcasing his ability to thrive under pressure and exploit the conditions to perfection.

In the first innings, Jansen unleashed his brilliance with the ball, claiming an extraordinary 7/13, a performance that will be remembered for ages. His wickets came at key intervals, as he consistently found the perfect lengths to trouble the batters. The Sri Lankan batters struggled against his variations and steep bounce, as Jansen orchestrated their historic collapse for a mere 42 runs, Sri Lanka’s lowest-ever Test total.

Jansen’s skill set as a left-arm pacer makes him a unique weapon in the Proteas’ arsenal. His ability to angle the ball across the right-handers and swing it back in creates endless dilemmas for batters. Additionally, his pinpoint accuracy and clever use of the crease were evident during his second-innings spell. Jansen’s dismissal of set batters like Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis highlighted his knack for breaking partnerships and turning the game in his team’s favor.

What set Jansen apart in this match was his relentless aggression coupled with tactical acumen. As Sri Lanka attempted to mount a fightback in the fourth innings, Jansen struck repeatedly to derail their chase. His ability to generate reverse swing on a deteriorating pitch and consistently attack the stumps left the visitors with no answers. He brought variety and adaptability to his spells, ensuring that every delivery tested the batter’s technique.

This performance not only reinforced Jansen’s status as one of the most exciting young talents in international cricket but also underscored the critical role of a left-arm seamer in modern Test cricket. His mastery of the art and ability to adapt to conditions have made him a linchpin in South Africa’s bowling attack. As he continues to evolve, performances like this ensure his name will remain synonymous with dominance and excellence for years to come.

South African left-arm fast bowler Marco Jansen bagged seven wickets as Sri Lanka were bundled out for only 42 runs. While Sri Lanka scored their lowest completed total in Test cricket, South Africa and Marco Jansen created history.

After South Africa were all out for 191 runs in the first innings of the Test series opener at Durban, Sri Lanka recorded their lowest completed Test innings total of 42 all out. Their previous lowest Test innings total record was 71 all out against Pakistan in the 1994 Kandy Test.

Meanwhile, it was also the lowest completed Test innings total for a team against South Africa. The previous record was 45 all out for New Zealand during the 2013 Cape Town Test.

On the other hand, Marco Jansen recorded the second-best bowling figures by a left-handed pacer in a Test innings. The record is 24-4-61-8 by former Australian left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Johnson against South Africa during the 2008 WACA Test.

In a thrilling T20I encounter at Centurion, India clinched a narrow victory over South Africa to take a 2-1 lead in the four-match series. After being put in to bat, India posted an imposing total of 220, thanks largely to Tilak Varma’s maiden T20I century. Coming in at number three, Tilak played an extraordinary knock, remaining unbeaten with 107 runs off just 56 balls. He, along with Abhishek Sharma, who contributed to a rapid 107-run partnership, set the tone for India’s innings. Ramandeep Singh also made a memorable impact on debut, hitting a six off the first ball he faced to push India’s total beyond the 210-run mark.

South Africa, faced with a daunting chase, kept themselves in contention through brisk contributions from Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller. However, it was Marco Jansen who almost pulled off a miraculous comeback for the Proteas. Coming in lower down the order, Jansen blasted a stunning 54 off just 16 balls, registering the fastest half-century ever against India. His power-hitting took the game down to the wire and created tense moments for the Indian side. Ultimately, Arshdeep Singh held his nerve in the final over, taking a crucial wicket to seal India’s victory by a slender margin, securing a 2-1 series lead with one match left to play.

Breakdown of Macro Jansen's 54 runs

In an electrifying performance during the third T20I between India and South Africa, Marco Jansen delivered a clutch batting display that almost swung the match in South Africa’s favor. Chasing a massive target of 220, Jansen walked in with the required rate climbing, but his aggressive intent was evident from the very first ball. Known more for his left-arm pace bowling, Jansen showcased his batting prowess, launching an incredible counter-attack that saw him scoring at a blistering strike rate. His innings was instrumental in keeping South Africa in the game, as he scored 85% of his runs in boundaries, showcasing his power-hitting abilities.

Jansen’s control at the crease was impressive, with a 71% success rate in managing his shots effectively. His power was especially evident in the middle of the bat, where he middled 31% of his shots, sending the ball racing to the boundary. He showed a strong ability to pick his shots, even though a significant portion (31.25%) of his shots were mistimed, reflecting his all-or-nothing approach to the high-stakes chase. Despite the pressure, Jansen kept up the aggression, maintaining his intent to score quickly and bring the Proteas closer to the daunting target.

Throughout his innings, Jansen maintained a highly fluctuating strike rate, averaging around 317 across his four-ball cycles. His strike rate shot up to a high of 450 during crucial phases of the game, as he capitalized on loose deliveries and punished any errors in the Indian bowling. This fluctuating strike rate highlighted Jansen’s adaptability and awareness of the game situation, as he balanced boundary-hitting with moments where he took calculated risks to avoid losing his wicket.

Despite his boundary-hitting focus, Jansen managed a modest strike rotation of 14%, a reflection of the relentless pressure he faced to keep up with the climbing required rate. His innings underscored the fine line between aggressive shot-making and managing the strike, as he balanced big shots with the occasional single. His ability to find the gaps was crucial in ensuring that he was not bogged down, and his boundary-heavy approach kept the scoreboard ticking rapidly.

Ultimately, Jansen’s valiant 54 off just 16 balls was not enough to clinch the win for South Africa, but his heroic effort left a lasting impression. His remarkable innings, combining immense power with a controlled aggression, brought South Africa tantalizingly close to the target, giving the Indian bowlers a real scare. Jansen’s performance demonstrated his potential as an all-rounder capable of turning games with the bat as well as with the ball, adding a new dimension to his skillset and raising hopes for the Proteas in future contests.
