Defending champions MI Cape Town will start their title defence with a big Boxing Day clash against Durban’s Super Giants on Friday, December 26, 2025, at the beautiful Newlands in Cape Town. South Africa’s T20 league, SA20, is back for its fourth season, bringing fans a summer full of exciting cricket matches.

The fourth season starts with a special Boxing Day match, following the 3rd successful season of SA20 as it enters the 4th season with full excitement. The opening game is expected to garner significant attention from fans worldwide, particularly in South Africa and India.
The first game of 2026 will be between Joburg Super Kings and Durban’s Super Giants at the Wanderers on New Year’s Day, giving fans a perfect start to the year.

Graeme Smith said: “Releasing the fixtures is always a big moment. We have planned the schedule to match school holidays and festive celebrations. For the first time, we will have matches on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, which is very special. The support from Indian fans has been amazing, and we are excited to welcome even more fans to South Africa.”

SA20 2026 Schedule

Under the leadership of Rashid Khan, the MI Cape Town went through a dream campaign during the 2024/25 season of the SA20. They finished the group stage of the points table at the top of the ladder with seven victories in 10 games at the net run rate of +2.446. After winning the first qualifier against Paarl Royals, they got the better of Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the final to lift the title.

Mumbai Indians’ franchise came to the fourth season’s auction with the lowest purse of R11.5 million as they still had 12 slots to fill, including four overseas and a couple of Under-23 slots. There was incredible silence on their table for the first 10 players before they raised their paddles for the first time for Rassie van der Dussen.

Cape Town had a bidding war with Johannesburg Super Kings for the opening batter; they doubled the batter’s price of R1 million. Paarl Royals joined the party and increased the rate before finally Cape Town got their opening batter back for a price of R5.2 million, which was half of their purse.

They also got back another opening batting option. Reeza Hendricks for a steal price of R500k and held on to Dane Piedt and Tristan Luss for a squad that resembles their previous editions. This player retention window concluded on July 18, giving teams a solid foundation to build upon for the upcoming season. Additionally, all franchises have secured their six Wildcard picks. These Wildcards could include either overseas stars or local players who were part of the franchise's squad in Season 3. 

Attention now shifts to the auction scheduled for September 9 in Johannesburg, where teams will compete for the remaining 84 spots. With a total auction purse of USD 7.4 million, the bidding is expected to be intense as teams look to complete their squads for Season 4.

There’s now a strong balance between pre-signed and retained international and Proteas players, alongside a significant purse available for the auction.”

He further said, “ After three seasons, the franchises have developed a good understanding of the South Africa cricket ecosystem and adopted a distinct strategy, which sets the stage for the most exciting auction yet.”

MI Cape Town, the defending champions, will start their title defence against Durban’s Super Giants on Friday, December 26, 2025. SA20 Season 4 Schedule Is Out – Opener at Newlands

On Saturday, December 27, there will be the first double-header of the season. Centurion will see Pretoria Capitals play Joburg Super Kings, while Paarl Royals face Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Boland Park in Paarl. Durban’s Kingsmead Stadium will be busy just before New Year’s. It will host MI Cape Town on December 28 and Joburg Super Kings on December 30. New Year’s Eve, December 31, will have two big games. Sunrisers Eastern Cape will play Paarl Royals at St. George’s Park in Gqeberha. Later, MI Cape Town will face Pretoria Capitals at Newlands. This match will start at 9 PM IST.

The fun continues on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2026. Joburg Super Kings will take on Durban’s Super Giants at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. League boss Graeme Smith said announcing the fixtures is a big step. “We’ve planned it so families can enjoy cricket during the holidays. We’re also really happy to have New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day matches for the first time,” he said.

Smith also talked about the support from India. “It’s been amazing to see how many Indian fans follow SA20. Players like Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Wiaan Mulder have become popular. India is very important to us, and we hope more fans come to South Africa for the games they won’t regret it.” The teams will pick their squads at the auction on September 9.

The action keeps going in January. On January 2, Boland Park will see a Cape derby between Paarl Royals and MI Cape Town. Both teams won all their home games last season. On January 3, there will be another double-header. Joburg Super Kings will play Sunrisers Eastern Cape at the Wanderers. Pretoria Capitals will take on Durban’s Super Giants at Centurion. The playoffs start with Qualifier 1 on January 21, the Eliminator on January 22, and Qualifier 2 on January 23. The Final will be on January 25. Venues for these matches will be announced later.

SA20 2025–26 Schedule

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd came into T20 franchise cricket in 2008 by launching the Mumbai Indians. Over the years, MI has grown into one of the most successful teams in IPL history. Their early seasons were tough, but they finally got their trophy in 2011 by winning the now-discontinued Champions League T20. The real breakthrough came in 2013 when they not only clinched their first IPL title but also added another CLT20 trophy to their cabinet.

Since then, Mumbai Indians have gone on to become the most successful team in the league with five IPL titles. The owners of MI have now also entered in the England and Wales Cricket Board's The Hundred competition by buying 49 percent stake in the Oval Invincibles, two-time champions already. MI will hope to add The Hundred also to their franchise soon. 

In 2022, Mumbai Indians introduced two new teams MI Emirates in Abu Dhabi for the ILT20 and MI Cape Town in South Africa for the SA20. A year later, they expanded further by joining the newly started Women’s Premier League (WPL) and Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA. While they won the inaugural title of the WPL as Mumbai Indians, and MLC as MI New York, the MI franchise had to waited long time for titles in the ILT20 and the SA20 leagues. MI landed the ILT20 trophy in 2024, and completed their trophy with the SA20 title in 2025.
