Corbin Bosch stunned after Mitchell Owen's bizarre bowled-rescue

When Australia were struggling despite scoring close to 10 runs per over, that shocking incident stunned everyone. It was the second ball of the 13th over, when Corbin Bosch was bowling to Mitchell Owen. It was a full-length delivery angling into the off stump, which Owen tried to smash hard but completely missed, and the ball kissed the off-stump. As the ball hit the off-stump, the off-stump bail lit up, but the bail didn't fall, and Owen was very lucky to remain not out. 

South African pacer Corbin Bosch and his colleagues were all in shock in that incident, as they couldn't believe that unlucky moment. Even the commentators had the same reactions as the Proteas camp. Proteas cricketer Rassie van der Dussen checked the stumps and gently hit the bail twice, while it only fell during the second time. It was the time when Owen was batting on 6 runs, who only added two more runs before getting out.

Visitors were strong enough during AUS vs SA 2nd T20I

Although it was a very unlucky moment for the Proteas, the visitors comfortably leveled the series, as the hosts couldn't put up any strong fightback in that big T20I chase. South Africa scored their record T20I total against Australia and also clinched their record T20I victory margin (by runs) against Australia. 

The new sensational batter of the shortest format, Mitchell Owen, has reckoned that he would carry the same T20 approach to the 50-over format during the upcoming series at home against South Africa. In his debut series in the T20Is, the right-handed batter drilled 125 runs at a strike rate of over 192 at number six, thanks to the best score of 50 in the opening game. 

In the Big Bash League, the Punjab Kings’ all-rounder has shown his power and poise in the opening position. However, Australia has used him in the middle order, perhaps building him as the replacement of Marcus Stonis and Glenn Maxwell, who have retired from ODIs after the Champions Trophy 2025.

‘If I am opening the batting or if I'm batting down the order, not much will change. Not much has changed in any form of my cricket. I just try and hit the ball, and I feel like if I sort of think 'defend', I go into my shell a little bit, and it just doesn't work. Mitchell Owen eyes to use T20 approach in ODIs during home series against South Africa

The 23-year-old has smashed 326 runs in 15 innings of the List A format at an average of 25.07 and a strike rate of nearly 145 with one century. In his previous fixture for Tasmania against South Africa at the Adelaide Oval, he smacked 149 runs in just 69 runs, smashing 14 boundaries and 10 sixes at a strike rate of over 215.

‘What I learned was that I have to find my process and my training methods to get ready for each game, because you don't have those chunks of training time to upskill your game, or try new things. You've got to be ready to play every couple of days. So for me, I learned a lot about that and a lot about what I need to get ready.’ Owen shed light.

He will join the squad in Darwin on August 06 after a few days at home to put his feet up. Since April, he has played 26 T20s in five different countries across the PSL, IPL, MLC, and his international debut.

The former New Zealand pacer showed excellent bowling performances under pressure, taking key wickets at regular intervals with his swing and pace. His ability to swing the ball both ways is amazing.

A dream international debut for Micthell Owen. When he came to bat at Sabina Park as the number 6 batsman of Australia, they needed 113 runs to win the match off 70. Owen, under pressure, on his debut match in Australia colors, showed no sing of rust.

He did his job so precisely that Australia touched the desired mark before the end of 19th over. As a deserving candidate, Mitchell Owen got the man of the match award for his allround performance. Against West Indies, in the 1st of the 5-match T20I series, the emerging cricketer not only did wonders with the bat, also took the wicket of dengerous looking West Indies skipper Shai Hope.

Because of his 50 off 27 on his career's first international match, Owen became the only third Australia player to smacked half century on a debuted match after Ricky Ponting and David Warner. The 23-year-old in his innings chose to hit only over boundaries to match the required run rate. He touched the milestone with six 6s, without any boundaries.

Three sixes in an over

Akeal Hosein, one of the most effective bowlers for West Indies in the game, conceded three sixes in an over when he went against the young Aussie gun. Andre Russell, verge of retiring from international cricket, leaked 18.50 runs on average in his 2-over spell. Experienced West Indies allrounder Jason Holder also proved ineffective when he stepped up to counter the right-handed player.

Owen's blazing innings came when Australia was chasing a target of 190, loosing multiple top order batters cheaply. Then, Cameron Green (51) and Micthell Owen played the much required hands Australia required the most.

The veteran Australia opening batter, Matthew Short, has been ruled out of the Caribbean tour as the management has recalled Jake-Fraser McGurk for the opening clash of the five-match series. Short pulled up the injury during a training session ahead of the Jamaica game and was sent home with a minor side strain. 

Mitchell Owen, the Punjab Kings’ opener, who helped the Hobart Hurricanes win the last summer during the Big Bash League (BBL), is set to make his T20I debut. The right-handed batter has smashed 960 runs in 43 innings at an average of 25.26 and a strike rate of nearly 186, thanks to two centuries and two half-centuries at the best score of 108 runs.

Cooper Connolly will bat at seven after Tim David, who was recovering from a hamstring injury playing for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, has been given a break. Jake Fraser-McGurk will now have a golden opportunity to develop his national career of 113 runs in seven T20Is with a strike rate of 143.03. He had a fabulous 2023-24 summer when he celebrated a List A century in just 29 balls in the domestic One-day Cup.

With just nine days for five encounters across Jamaica and St Kitts, the selectors were cautious with Short, who is likely to make a return for the home white-ball internationals against South Africa in Darwin on August 10.
