Pakistan chase down target with three ball to spare

In response, Pakistan successfully chased down the target set by Netherlands scoring 148 runs for the loss of 7 wickets off a total of 19.3 overs to win the game and thereby take the first match of the tournament. Sahibzada Farhan anchored the innings at the beginning, scoring an impressive total of 47 runs off 4 boundaries and 2 sixes, allowing the team to remain on course during the majority of the tournament. Even though wickets kept falling at regular intervals, Farhan's steady hand made sure that Pakistan's run rate was never out of control, thus giving the team confidence to finish in style during the latter part of the innings.

Faheem Ashraf finished off the game with a phenomenal display of hitting, scoring 29 not out off 11 balls, including 2 fours and 3 sixes with a strike rate of 263.64. From the Qualifier of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, four teams would earn the main competition tickets. On Wednesday, we saw the first two bookings from this tournament as Bangladesh Women and the Netherlands Women have qualified for the upcoming competition.

Just like the Bangladesh Women, the Dutch Women also needed a win on Wednesday to secure their spot for the upcoming T20 World Cup. After restricting the USA Women to 129/7 in 20 overs, the Netherlands Women scored 90/2 in 12 overs before the rain interruption and won the match by 21 runs in the DLS method.

Netherlands Women previously featured in four ICC Women's Cricket World Cups

The Netherlands Women previously played in four ICC Women's Cricket World Cups, in the 1988, 1993, 1997, and 2000 editions. However, the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 will be their T20 World Cup debut, which England and Wales will host from June 12 to July 5, 2026. A total of 12 teams will participate in this upcoming tournament, out of which four teams will qualify from the ongoing Qualifiers. 

Scott Edwards produced one of the most remarkable innings ever seen in T20 cricket. The Netherlands captain smashed an unbeaten 229 runs off just 81 balls in a domestic T20 match played in Australia.

Edwards achieved the feat while representing Altona Sports Cricket Club in the Division One Clenzo Group Shield, an Australian first-grade T20 competition. The match was part of the fourth round of the tournament, where Altona faced Williams Landing Sports Club. The Clenzo Group Shield is organised by the Western Suburbs Churches and Community Cricket Association and features several competitive club teams.

Opening the batting, Edwards made a steady start with 11 runs in the first over. He accelerated in the fourth over, hitting three boundaries off fast-bowling all-rounder Prince Chouhan. Edwards reached his half-century in just 23 balls, scoring back-to-back sixes. At the halfway stage, he was one run short of a century. He later lost his opening partner, former Melbourne Stars player Lachlan Bangs, after the pair added 150 runs without loss by the 11th over. Edwards completed his hundred with a single, three balls after Bangs’ dismissal.

However, as first-grade cricket is not officially recognised as T20 cricket, the innings does not count as Edwards’ maiden T20 century, despite being one of the most extraordinary knocks at club level.

Edwards Powers Altona to Huge Total

Batting first, Altona posted a massive 304 for 2, with Scott Edwards completely dominating the innings. He reached his half-century in just 23 balls, brought up his century in the 11th over, and crossed 150 runs by the 17th over. The final overs were brutal for the bowlers, as Edwards smashed 12 sixes and 14 boundaries in the last four overs.

Chasing a target of 305 runs, Williams Landing were bowled out for 118, giving Altona a crushing 186-run victory.

Despite this stunning performance, Edwards is yet to score a century in international cricket in any format. His highest score in international T20s is 99, and he has also not registered a hundred in Tests or ODIs.

Vivian Kingma, a fast bowler from the Netherlands, has been suspended for three months by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after testing positive for a recreational drug in an ODI match against the United Arab Emirates earlier this year.

The 30-year-old seamer provided an in-competition sample after the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match in Utrecht, on May 12, 2025, which tested positive for Benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. According to the ICC Anti-Doping Code, its presence in his system identifies him as having committed an anti-doping violation because it is classified as a Substance of Abuse.

Kingma accepted the charge and explained that he had taken the substance out of competition. While his admission did lead to Kingma avoiding a lengthier sanction, the ICC confirmed the violation and implemented a suspension.

Kingma will serve a period of ineligibility for three months from August 15, 2025. However, the suspension can be reduced to one month if Kingma completes a rehabilitation or treatment programme approved by the ICC. The ICC also confirmed that all of Kingma’s results from the ODI match on May 12, 2025, and all subsequent applicable matches, have been disqualified in accordance with the ICC Anti-Doping Code.

ICC suspension sidelines Netherlands seamer after positive test

Kingma has been a crucial component of the Dutch bowling attack since his international debut back in 2013. Although known for swinging the ball with the new ball, he has played ODIs and T20Is for the Netherlands, including appearances at major ICC tournaments. Kingma will be missed as the Dutch team tries to find its footing in the World Cup League 2 competition.

The entire case raises several questions on the ICC’s commitment to preserving the image of the game. In the case of recreational drugs, even if used outside competition, it is just as out of bounds in samples provided during international matches. The governing body mentions that education and knowledge are important to avoid when players think using recreational drugs is acceptable.

For Kingma, the potential return to the international game will now depend on completing the suspension and treatment course (if applicable). As the date of return is uncertain, the Dutch team will need to use other seamers to replace Kingma.

The race to gain qualification to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Global Qualifier has begun, with both Ireland and the Netherlands qualifying from the Europe region. The Netherlands qualified in style with a 65-run win over Germany, and they join Ireland as the two European countries that qualified for the next stage of the event. 

Ireland made their mark in the European Qualifier, having won their first five matches in a row, which ensured they finished top. The Dutch kept their focus in a must-win match against Germany, knowing that a win would finish them in the top two, regardless of what happened in Italy's final game against Ireland. The performance showed how the women's game is growing in the Netherlands, and it is encouraging to see it consistently progressing.

European Teams Eye World Cup Berths After Qualifier Success

With these outcomes, Ireland and the Netherlands will now compete in the Global Qualifier, where a total of 10 teams will compete for 4 spots at the Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in England in 2026. Hey, now join Scotland and Bangladesh, who have already secured direct qualification for the qualifier as a result of being there in the 2024 edition of the tournament.

Other areas have also contributed a number of teams to the whole.
