Vivian Kingma, a fast bowler from the Netherlands, has been suspended for three months by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after testing positive for a recreational drug in an ODI match against the United Arab Emirates earlier this year.

The 30-year-old seamer provided an in-competition sample after the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 match in Utrecht, on May 12, 2025, which tested positive for Benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. According to the ICC Anti-Doping Code, its presence in his system identifies him as having committed an anti-doping violation because it is classified as a Substance of Abuse.

Kingma accepted the charge and explained that he had taken the substance out of competition. While his admission did lead to Kingma avoiding a lengthier sanction, the ICC confirmed the violation and implemented a suspension.

Kingma will serve a period of ineligibility for three months from August 15, 2025. However, the suspension can be reduced to one month if Kingma completes a rehabilitation or treatment programme approved by the ICC. The ICC also confirmed that all of Kingma’s results from the ODI match on May 12, 2025, and all subsequent applicable matches, have been disqualified in accordance with the ICC Anti-Doping Code.

ICC suspension sidelines Netherlands seamer after positive test

Kingma has been a crucial component of the Dutch bowling attack since his international debut back in 2013. Although known for swinging the ball with the new ball, he has played ODIs and T20Is for the Netherlands, including appearances at major ICC tournaments. Kingma will be missed as the Dutch team tries to find its footing in the World Cup League 2 competition.

The entire case raises several questions on the ICC’s commitment to preserving the image of the game. In the case of recreational drugs, even if used outside competition, it is just as out of bounds in samples provided during international matches. The governing body mentions that education and knowledge are important to avoid when players think using recreational drugs is acceptable.

For Kingma, the potential return to the international game will now depend on completing the suspension and treatment course (if applicable). As the date of return is uncertain, the Dutch team will need to use other seamers to replace Kingma.

The race to gain qualification to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Global Qualifier has begun, with both Ireland and the Netherlands qualifying from the Europe region. The Netherlands qualified in style with a 65-run win over Germany, and they join Ireland as the two European countries that qualified for the next stage of the event.

Ireland made their mark in the European Qualifier, having won their first five matches in a row, which ensured they finished top. The Dutch kept their focus in a must-win match against Germany, knowing that a win would finish them in the top two, regardless of what happened in Italy's final game against Ireland. The performance showed how the women's game is growing in the Netherlands, and it is encouraging to see it consistently progressing.

With these outcomes, Ireland and the Netherlands will now compete in the Global Qualifier, where a total of 10 teams will compete for 4 spots at the Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in England in 2026. Hey, now join Scotland and Bangladesh, who have already secured direct qualification for the qualifier as a result of being there in the 2024 edition of the tournament.

Other areas have also contributed a number of teams to the whole. The USA qualified from the Americas in March 2025, and Bhutan and Thailand qualified from the Asia Qualifier in May.  The final three spots will come in upcoming regional tournaments in Africa and East Asia Pacific, and set the scene for a mix of teams for a competitive tournament.

The Global Qualifier is going to be an incredible tournament, with some established teams, as well as countries aspiring for a chance on the world stage. For Ireland and the Netherlands, getting to this point signifies their regional prowess and gives them a great opportunity to challenge themselves against stronger international opponents.

As anticipation builds from all parts of Europe, I know that European cricket fans will be paying attention to their teams' preparations and wishing these two teams further historical achievements to qualify for the Women’s T20 World Cup in England.

The Netherlands' 15-member squad has been announced for their upcoming tour of Bangladesh, where the Dutch side will play a crucial three-match T20I series. A star Dutch player has been dropped from the squad, while some strong names have made a comeback to the squad.

Netherlands will have important preparation for T20 World Cup

Before the Asia Cup 2025, Bangladesh will host a three-match T20I series against the Netherlands. Sylhet will host these matches on August 30, September 1, and September 3. It will be the Netherlands' first international cricket commitment after the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Qualifiers, where they won the campaign to book their place for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which India and Sri Lanka will host in February and March 2026. So, the forthcoming Bangladesh tour will play a crucial preparatory role for the Dutch side ahead of the next T20 World Cup.

Scott Edwards will continue to lead the Netherlands T20I side, while Ryan Klien, Shariz Ahmad, Tim Pringle, and Fred Klaasen have been recalled to the squad. As some players experienced the last edition of the Bangladesh Premier League, the Dutch side has strong confidence in the upcoming away T20I series. Also, their head coach Ryan Cook previously worked for the Bangladesh men's national cricket team as a fielding coach for many years. The Netherlands are reportedly to arrive in Bangladesh on August 26.

Netherlands and Italy have booked their places in the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka. Netherlands finished at the top of the Europe Regional Final, winning three out of four matches. Italy made it through by a very small margin, beating Jersey on Net Run Rate (NRR).

Netherlands and Italy qualify for 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka

It was a close and exciting Regional Final, with Italy, Netherlands, and Jersey all fighting for a spot. Earlier on Friday, Jersey pulled off a last-ball win against Scotland. It was the first time Jersey had ever beaten Scotland in a T20 match. In the final game, Netherlands needed to beat Italy to qualify. Italy just had to make sure they didn’t lose by a big margin. Italy batted first and scored 134 for seven. Netherlands chased the target in 17 overs to win, but Italy’s better NRR kept them ahead of Jersey in the table.

Scotland was looking untouchable when they posted 369 runs on the scoreboard, thanks to George Munsey, who played a record-breaking 150-ball, 191-run innings against the Netherlands (Scotland vs Netherland). In the era of T20 cricket and crazy batting, no target seems safe, especially after the ODI match between Scotland and the Netherlands.

Friday's morning starts with the news that a mammoth target has been chased down, not by a traditional big name, but by the Netherlands. The Dutch brigade has registered the third-highest successful run chase in the history of ODI cricket. Before the run chasing by the Netherlands, Munsey's 191 itself was another record breaker—the highest score by an associate batter.

Along with the opener, Matthew Cross also snatched 59 off 49 balls. On the other side, Michael Levitt, with a 2/42 bowling figure, was the most successful bowler of the match for the Netherlands, whose economy rate was below 7.00.

O'Dowd at his Maximum

Max O’Dowd and Levitt (44 off 40) got the Netherlands off to a flying start in the second innings and established the foundation for a historic victory heist. While the second innings batting team was losing wickets at one end, Dowd was scoring runs for fun. He remained not out at 158 with a strike rate of 121.53 and landed his team safely to the home.

In the middle and lower middle order, Teja Nidamanuru and Noah Croes provided the much-needed support to Max with 51- and 50-run innings, respectively. In this manner, the Dutch destroyed the run fortress created by the Scottish in the first innings.

Highest successful chases in ODI history:

  • South Africa 438/9 vs. Australia in Johannesburg, 2006 (target 435)
  • South Africa 372/6 vs. Australia in Durban, 2016 (target 372)
  • Netherlands 374/6 vs. Scotland in Dundee, 2025 (Target 370)

Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan remains a pivotal player for Bangladesh. The left-arm spinner is closing in on 50 wickets in this World Cup cycle, maintaining an economy rate of just over six an over. Group D Prediction: Top Two Teams

Each team in Group D has its unique strengths. South Africa’s power-packed lineup, Sri Lanka’s balanced squad, Bangladesh’s mix of experience and youth, the Netherlands’ history of surprises, and Nepal’s youthful energy all contribute to a highly competitive group.

South Africa and Sri Lanka are strong contenders to advance from Group D. South Africa and Sri Lanka: The sheer star power makes South Africa a favourite for the top spot. Sri Lanka is likely to edge past Bangladesh for second place, given its better head-to-head record in the recent encounters. Bangladesh, with its blend of youth and experience, could also make a significant impact if it plays to its potential. The Netherlands and Nepal, though less favoured, have the potential to cause upsets.

The Netherlands cricket team recently announced its squad for the highly anticipated ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Scott Edwards confirmed as the captain of the Dutch side, entrusted with the responsibility of leading the team in their quest for success.

Notable Absences: Roelof van der Merwe and Colin Ackermann

The absence of seasoned campaigners Roelof van der Merwe and Colin Ackermann raised eyebrows among fans and experts. Both players had been stalwarts in the Dutch setup, contributing significantly to the team’s success in previous tournaments. However, selectors opted for a fresh approach, injecting youth and vitality into the squad.

Introduction of New Faces: Tim Pringle and Michael Levitt

In a bold move, selectors introduced two relatively inexperienced players, left-arm spinner Tim Pringle and hard-hitting opener Michael Levitt, into the squad. While their selection may have surprised some, Pringle and Levitt showcased immense potential and impressed with their performances in domestic and international cricket.

Coach’s Confidence: Ryan Cook’s Insights

Head coach Ryan Cook expressed confidence in the selected squad, emphasizing its balance and adaptability to different playing conditions. He lauded the players’ commitment and performance in recent training sessions. He highlighted the depth and quality of Dutch cricket—a testament to the country’s growth and development.

“We have selected a well-balanced team, and we are confident that it will be able to perform in the conditions against the opposition we face in the US and West Indies,” head coach Ryan Cook said.

“All players have been training well and involved in the recent ProSeries, with some exciting performances showing the growing depth and quality of Netherlands cricket. We have performed admirably in the last two World Cups we have participated in and will be determined to rise to the challenges we face to reach the next round of the tournament.”

The Group Stage Challenge: Opponents and Venues

In the group stages of the T20 World Cup, the Netherlands will face formidable opponents, including South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Matches will be held at various venues across the United States and the West Indies, offering diverse conditions and challenges for the competing teams.

The anticipated Pakistan tour of the Netherlands in the upcoming year has been temporarily postponed due to scheduling challenges, according to reports from Cricbuzz. Originally slated for May, the tour has been put on hold as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) requested the delay, citing a congested national team calendar.

In response to the PCB’s request, the Koninklijke Nederlandse Cricket Bond (KNCB) is collaborating with the PCB to identify a suitable timeframe for rescheduling the series. Initially planned to follow the CWC Super League series in Rotterdam in May 2022, the tour was strategically positioned just ahead of Pakistan’s scheduled visits to Ireland and England. However, with a home series against New Zealand in April and other engagements, the limited available window led to the postponement of the Netherlands tour.

Netherlands Tour Off: Pakistan’s Planned Visit to the Netherlands Called Off

The scheduled tour of the Netherlands by the Pakistan cricket team has been called off, leaving disappointment in its wake. Roland Lefebvre, KNCB High Performance Manager, expressed understanding of the situation, stating optimism for finding a new window to reschedule the series, whether at home or away, in an interview with Cricbuzz.

Post their participation in the ICC World Cup 2023, both teams are reflecting on their performances. Pakistan faced setbacks, failing to reach the semi-finals with five losses in nine league games, concluding fifth on the table. The Dutch team finished ninth, securing two wins and facing seven losses.

In their World Cup encounter, Pakistan commenced their campaign against the Netherlands in Hyderabad. They set a formidable total of 286 while batting first and subsequently bowled out the Dutch for 205 in 41 overs. The Netherlands managed notable victories over Bangladesh and South Africa in the tournament, with their win against the Proteas standing out as one of the surprises.

Looking ahead, Pakistan’s cricket journey will take them to Australia for a three-match Test series scheduled from December 14, 2023, to January 7, 2024. The Test matches are set to be held in Perth (Dec 14-18), MCG (Dec 26-30), and SCG (Jan 3-7).
