New Zealand Women finally win their first victory of the ICC Women's World Cup 2025, beating Bangladesh Women comprehensively by 100 runs in Match 11. The match was held at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, where New Zealand came back strongly after a sequence of early losses in the tournament. Not only did this win raise their confidence but also pushed them ahead of Bangladesh in the points table.

After winning the toss, New Zealand decided to bat first and scored a competitive 227/9 in their 50-over allotted time. Skipper Sophie Devine opened with a good 63 runs, while Brooke Halliday scored a crucial 69 runs. Both their 112-run stand for the fourth wicket took New Zealand off the shaky start at 38/3. Rabeya Khan for Bangladesh was impressive with the ball, ending on a haul of 3/30.

Chasing 228, Bangladesh’s innings never gained momentum as they collapsed to 33/6 inside the first 14 overs. Despite a late effort from Fahima Khatun (34) and Rabeya Khan (25), the team was eventually bowled out for 127 in 39.5 overs. Jess Kerr (3/21) and Lea Tahuhu (3/22), playing her 100th ODI, were instrumental in sealing a dominant win for the White Ferns. This commanding victory saw New Zealand move to fifth place on the points table. Below are the main reasons for the Bangladesh Women defeat:

1. Top-order collapse:

Bangladesh's top and middle order was in collapse against New Zealand's bowling attack in the chase of 228. They were reduced to 33/6 in 14 overs, effectively killing off their chase. Only three batters reached double figures.

2. Failure to dismiss New Zealand's middle order:

Following a strong beginning with the ball, Bangladesh could not keep up the pressure and take wickets in the middle overs. This allowed New Zealand to limit their collapse from 38/3, and build an adequate partnership between Sophie Devine and Brooke Halliday.

3. Excellent bowling from New Zealand:

New Zealand's bowlers were absolutely overwhelming, piercing through the Bangladesh batting order. Jess Kerr and Tahuhu were particularly damaging, each picking up three wickets. The continued pressure from the New Zealand bowlers meant that Bangladesh were unable to make any effective partnerships.

New Zealand Women secured a convincing 100-run win against Bangladesh Women in Match 11 of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. New Zealand batted first after winning the toss and put a good score of 227/9 on the board in their 50 overs. Skipper Sophie Devine (63 runs) and Brooke Halliday (69 runs) played their part, sharing a vital 112-run partnership to salvage the innings after early deterioration reduced New Zealand to 38/3. Rabeya Khan was the Bangladeshi bowlers' choice, with 3/30.

In reply, Bangladesh-W also struggled miserably in their pursuit of 228, being finally bowled out for 127 in 39.5 overs. Only three Bangladeshi players scored above double figures, with Fahima Khatun (34 runs) and Rabeya Khan (25 runs) showing some resistance in a losing cause. New Zealand bowlers stood out in a wonderful performance, led by Jess Kerr and Lea Tahuhu, who each claimed three wickets, providing a one-sided victory for their team.

NZ-W vs BAN-W: Who said what?

Brooke Halliday (Player of the Match):

"I guess the biggest thing after the couple of days was being okay with getting ones and being okay with being boring. We knew the plan, bat long till the 40th over and then have the party time. It’s easy to bat with Sophie; she keeps it simple, and that helps me. What we did well today was keep things simple with the ball, and it worked for us."

Nigar Sultana (Bangladesh Captain):

"We bowled well early on but couldn’t maintain consistency with the bat. After 40 overs, we leaked too many boundaries, and that cost us. The lower middle order is trying hard, but we need more from the top batters. Hopefully, the bowlers continue this form, and our batting unit steps up in the next game."

Sophie Devine (New Zealand Captain):

"Really pleasing for this side to get on the board. Conditions were tough, but Brooke and I accepted that it wouldn’t be easy. Mair and Lea were exceptional with the ball, attacking the stumps and keeping pressure on. Every point is gold in this tournament, so we’ll take each game as it comes."

NZ-W vs BAN-W, 12th Match Preview

Bottom-placed New Zealand will meet Bangladesh in Cape Town as both teams aim to stay alive in the tournament on Friday afternoon. Bangladesh Women have been beaten by Australia Women and Sri Lanka Women with New Zealand suffering heavy defeats to Australia Women and South Africa Women. With a talented bowling attack and plenty of experience in their batting line-up, New Zealand Women have massively underperformed in this competition. They have an excellent record over Bangladesh Women. Bangladesh Women have lost both games but have not embarrassed themselves in either contest. Against a low on confident New Zealand Women side they will think they have a chance.

NZ-W vs BAN-W 12th Match Probable Winners:

Neither team have anything to lose in this game and know that they must win to give themselves any chance of finishing in the top two of Group 1 and progressing to the semi-final. With the exception of Marufa Akter and Nigar Sultana, Bangladesh Women’s players have looked under the required level in the competition. Although New Zealand Women have also been poor, their players have stronger records. After four ducks for their openers from their first two games, we expect New Zealand Women’s top order to deliver some good scores in this match. Considering the team combination, New Zealand-W is expected to win this match.
