Former India batter Suresh Raina has expressed strong belief in Team India's ability to bounce back and win the ongoing Test series against England. Despite trailing 2-1 after a narrow 22-run defeat at Lord’s, Raina is optimistic that the youthful Indian side, led by Shubman Gill, can turn things around and clinch the five-match series 3-2. Speaking to news agency ANI, Raina said, “They will do it. They have that sense of desire, perseverance, and determination. Gill will make his mark as a batter and as a captain. I think he has done really well."

Raina also praised other Indian batters for their contributions during the tour so far. He highlighted the performances of KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant, pointing out the solid foundation they have laid with the bat. “We saw how KL Rahul batted, offered some solidity as an opener, and got good support from Yashasvi Jaiswal. Then Rishabh Pant, he has batted so differently, and his wicketkeeping has been great,” the 38-year-old stated.

Despite being behind in the series, Raina emphasized that India has often outplayed England in patches. “India won, then India lost, then won, then lost (talking about sessions during the Test series). However, as a player, Shubman Gill has done well. He has scored runs. Washington Sundar has done well. Jasprit Bumrah, I think his bowling was outstanding,” he added.

Gill leads with the bat, bowlers dominate charts

As things stand in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Shubman Gill is the leading run-getter in the series, scoring 607 runs at a remarkable average of 101.16, including three centuries with a best of 269. Rishabh Pant is second with 425 runs at 70.83, having notched up two hundreds and two fifties. Among the bowlers, Mohammed Siraj leads with 13 wickets, followed closely by Jasprit Bumrah (12) and Akash Deep (11).

India will look to script history in the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester, a venue where they have never won a Test match. Out of nine games, the team has lost four and drawn five. The last meeting at the venue in August 2014 ended in a heavy innings-and-54-run defeat for India, with Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali dismantling their batting line-up.

<![CDATA[WATCH: Dhruv Jurel spotted doing keeping drills in Beckenham ahead of ENG vs IND 2025 4th Test]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/watch-dhruv-jurel-spotted-doing-keeping-drills-in-beckenham-ahead-of-eng-vs-ind-2025-4th-test/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/watch-dhruv-jurel-spotted-doing-keeping-drills-in-beckenham-ahead-of-eng-vs-ind-2025-4th-test/ Sat, 19 Jul 2025 20:37:26 GMT

Young Indian wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel was seen sharpening his skills behind the stumps at Beckenham on Saturday, July 19, as India prepared for the crucial fourth Test against England at Old Trafford. In a video shared by ESPNCricinfo on X (formerly Twitter), the 24-year-old was spotted working closely with fielding coach T. Dilip during an intense wicketkeeping session. With the match set to begin on Wednesday, July 23, Jurel’s preparation suggests he may be in contention for the keeping role.

Jurel had taken over the gloves during the Lord’s Test after Rishabh Pant sustained a finger injury in the first innings. He continued to keep in the second innings as well, but questions were raised about his glovework after India conceded 32 extras during England’s total of 192 runs. Despite the scrutiny, support poured in for the youngster from the cricketing fraternity.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra defended Jurel and pointed out the difficulty of keeping at Lord’s due to the slope. “There is a problem at Lord's. The ball goes in one direction and then keeps moving in the other direction with the slope. I was seeing deliveries from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj; the kid was diving but wasn't able to reach there. The balls were so far away. If the ball had gone past the batter where it finished, you would have said it's a wide,” he explained.

Shastri: Pant Shouldn’t Play Just as a Batter

Rishabh Pant's injury has brought added focus on Jurel, especially with doubts over whether Pant will be fit enough to take the gloves in the fourth Test. Former India coach Ravi Shastri weighed in, stating that Pant shouldn’t play solely as a batter. “If Pant had sustained a fracture, then he would be better off missing the fourth Test and returning fully fit for the fifth Test match at The Oval,” Shastri said.

He also emphasized the risk of aggravating the injury by fielding. “I am not in favor of Pant playing just as a batter,” said the 63-year-old. Jurel, who made his Test debut against England at Ranchi in 2024, impressed with a crucial unbeaten 39 in the second innings to guide India to a five-wicket win.
