Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir was recently put in a disturbing spot when he received two threatening emails. Initially, it was feared that the hand of a terror organization such as ISIS was involved. However, in a turn of events, a 21-year-old engineering student from Gujarat named Jigneshsinh Parmar has been found and arrested concerning the case.

The Central District Police picked up Parmar on Friday after tracing the suspicious emails. During interrogation, inconsistencies in his statements led to further scrutiny. According to the police, Parmar’s family claims that he has been struggling with mental health issues. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities trying to determine whether there was any militant link behind his actions.

Gambhir Receives Death Threats Amid Pahalgam Tragedy: Investigation Underway

The threats against Gambhir arrived on April 22, the same day a horrific terrorist attack unfolded in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 people lost their lives. The two emails sent to Gambhir simply read, “I kill you.” Due to the sensitive timing and suspicious origin of the emails, security agencies took immediate action.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) M Harsha Vardhan confirmed the developments, stating, “Parmar is an engineering student. His family claims that he is suffering from mental health issues. Further investigation is in progress.” He also noted that Gambhir, already under Delhi Police protection, continues to receive appropriate security measures.

The Rajinder Nagar Police Station officially registered the FIR following Gambhir's complaint. Gambhir highlighted the gravity of the situation and requested immediate action and increased security for his family in his letter to the authorities. Gambhir has been threatened previously as well. He also received death threats in 2022, which led authorities to increase security around him.

Gambhir Condemns Pahalgam Attack Before Receiving Death Threats

Following the Pahalgam attack, Gambhir had taken to social media to strongly condemn the violence, stating, "Our condolences to the families of the deceased. Those responsible for this act will have to pay the price. India will strike back." It was shortly after this post that the threatening emails arrived. While the investigation continues, the Delhi Police are taking no chances with Gambhir’s safety, and further details are expected to emerge in the coming days.

Gambhir, a key player in India's cricketing past, performed pivotal roles for the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup wins. The BCCI named him Team India's head coach in 2024 and led the Rohit Sharma-led team to a Champions Trophy triumph earlier this year in Dubai.

The recent terror attack in Pahalgam has left the entire nation in grief, deeply affecting every Indian. Citizens across the country have been expressing their outrage and sorrow over the tragic loss of lives. Among them, former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has also paid tribute to the victims. He extended his condolences and expressed solidarity with the affected families, echoing the collective pain and anger felt throughout the country in the wake of such a horrifying act of terrorism.

In addition to expressing his grief, Sourav Ganguly strongly voiced his opinion on India’s diplomatic stance with Pakistan. He advocated for a complete severing of ties with the neighboring country, stressing that acts of terror cannot be taken lightly or normalized as yearly occurrences. Ganguly’s remarks reflect a growing sentiment among many Indians who believe stronger actions should be taken to ensure national security and send a clear message against terrorism. Citing this, the former India skipper told ANI that he fully supported breaking ties with Pakistan, stating that strict action was necessary. He emphasized that it was no joke for such incidents to occur every year and added that terrorism could not be tolerated.

"100 per cent, this (breaking ties with Pakistan) should be done. Strict action is necessary. It is no joke that such things happen every year. Terrorism cannot be tolerated,” Ganguly told ANI.

India and Pakistan have not played each other since 2013

It has been nearly a decade since India last played a bilateral series with Pakistan in 2013, and since then, the two cricketing arch-rivals have only played each other at ICC events. Political ramifications and security threats have halted any bilateral commitments, and earlier this year, during the Champions Trophy, India decided not to berth in Pakistan, and all scheduled matches were played in Dubai via a neutral venue.

India and Pakistan participated and played against each other once during the Champions Trophy, with India winning that match. Global interest began and peaked in the good old days when India and Pakistan used to play against each other. India and Pakistan met once during the Champions Trophy, however, they were able to demonstrate the action and intensity of their rivalry happy which became a normal ICC event match, without a bilateral series. And cricket fans across the world all continue to share an imagination on whether the bilateral series will resume forever.

Danish Kaneria, former leg spinner from Pakistan and one of only a few Hindu cricketers to play for Pakistan, has received mixed responses and ignited a strong discussion by publicly criticizing the Pakistani government after the Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 people were killed, followed by condemnation from across the world — but not from Pakistan. Kaneria’s clear condemnation has ruffled feathers both nationally and internationally.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Pakistan leg spinner chastised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for not condemning the attack of terror. He went on to accuse Pakistan of being a safe haven for terrorist organizations and indirectly making such events happen. "Why doesn't PM Sharif condemn the Pahalgam attack?” he asked publicly. In his tweet, he not only grieved for the lives lost but also condemned the state's role in allowing everyone to understand that it is OK for them to use terrorism across the line.

Kaneria went on to push the issue further, mentioning the high alert provided by the military after the attack. He suggested that there would be some knowledge of prior action or at least some level of understanding of the danger, showing there was an underlying issue in the state systems. He made it clear, however, that his denunciations do not encompass the people of Pakistan, many of whom are (in his view) victims of terrorism themselves, but the political and military elite that allow these actions to continue through their inaction or covert support.

Diplomatic Fallout and National Reckoning

In the wake of the Pahalgam tragedy, India has responded appropriately with diplomatic measures, suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, shutting the Attari-Wagah border, and watching the movement of Pakistani nationals. Kaneria's words only provide a global perspective on the Pakistani role and further international scrutiny, which will only bolster India's credibility regarding Pakistan's role in regional instability. Kaneria's comments carry more weight because they come from someone who wore the Pakistani colors on a global stage, not a traditional political leader.

The voice of Danish Kaneria offers a unique insider credibility and his critique of Pakistan's counterterrorism position. By refusing to remain silent selfishly, particularly as a minority voice in a precarious public environment, he has reignited discussions regarding accountability, reform, and complicit moral responsibilities in the absence of civic responsibility of public figures. In other words, by standing up, he holds not only Pakistan but the world to account for uncomfortable truths about state terrorism and the tragedy of silence.
