In Match 37 of the IPL 2025, Punjab Kings (PBKS) suffered a heavy seven-wicket defeat at the hands of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur. With only 158 to defend, PBKS came back with nothing to show as RCB chased down the total with seven deliveries to spare. Part of this continued run of bad luck for PBKS was not only their ineffective bowling tactics but also their inability to stage a meaningful batting challenge.

The principal reason for PBKS's defeat was their inability to dismantle RCB's batting momentum in the chase. On the bowling side, despite the early dismissal of Phil Salt very early by Arshdeep Singh, PBKS failed to apply any pressure on RCB's pair. Virat Kohli (73* off 43) and Devdutt Padikkal (61 off 35) staged an unbroken 103-run partnership in the middle and continued to punish PBKS. Yuzvendra Chahal and Harpreet Brar were ineffective, allowing RCB to reward them for unnecessarily waiting for wickets as opposed to being proactive bowlers intent on dismissals. At no point were PBKS able to disrupt, let alone dismantle, the RCB pair. RCB chased the total with difference as required.

Equally damaging was the poor batting performance PBKS displayed to arrive at a total of 157/6. The highlight was Prabhsimran's wild 33 off 17 goods to give Batters ahead hope; however, as the last three wickets tumbled to the RCB spin duo of Krunal Pandya (2/25) and Suyash Sharma (2/26), PBKS fell apart under pressure. Shashank Singh's painfully slow 31 off 33 and Sam Curran's recycling efforts of 17 off 14 amplified the damages PBKS had on the board, while RCB’s death bowling, led by Josh Hazlewood, restricted PBKS. To recover, PBKS must urgently refine their batting approach and bowling strategies to seize crucial moments in future matches.

1. Failure to Build Momentum in the Batting

PBKS could not maintain any momentum in their batting innings and finished just 157/6 in 20 overs, of which opener Prabhsimran Singh made 33 off 17 balls. PBKS' inability to build partnerships was assisted in no small part by RCB's spinners Krunal Pandya (2/25) and Suyash Sharma (2/26), who bowled PBKS into trouble in crucial situations. Also, Shashank Singh scored 31 off 33 balls, and there were other instances of batsmen such as Marco Jansen, who did little to generate momentum scoring. In the event you were wondering why PBKS' total of 157 was uncompetitive, it may mostly come down to the lack of run scoring on a 2-paced pitch.

2. RCB's Brilliant Death Bowling

RCB bowlers, particularly Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, executed brilliant death bowling, which restricted PBKS' momentum. Hazlewood kept things tight in the final overs, while Kumar (4/26, no wickets) bowled economically, and even PBKS struggled to take advantage of the last overs. In the end, because of the death bowling, PBKS were not able to set a competitive target for RCB and made it easier for RCB to run down PBKS' score.

3. Inability to Break up RCB's Batting Partnership

While chasing 158 runs, PBKS couldn't break the 103-run stand between Virat Kohli (73* off 43 balls) and Devdutt Padikkal (61 off 35 balls). Although PBKS got lucky and Brar took out Padikkal, it did not matter because the breakthrough came too late, as none of the PBKS bowlers, including Arshdeep Singh or Yuzvendra Chahal, could apply consistent scoreboard pressure on RCB early.

In Match 37 of IPL 2025, held on April 20 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) by a hefty seven wickets. RCB successfully chased 158 runs with seven wickets left and seven balls to spare.

Punjab Kings Innings

PBKS batted first after being put in to bat and finished with 157/6 in their 20 overs. After a blasting start from Prabhsimran Singh (33 runs from just 17 balls), Shashank Singh anchored the innings with an unbeaten 31 runs off 33 balls. Josh Inglis played a brisk cameo as well with a few boundaries, scoring 29 off 17 balls. RCB bowlers consistently broke the rhythm to not let PBKS score at more than just 7.85 runs per over. Krunal Pandya bowled very well, taking 2/25 in his solid 4 overs, with Suyash Sharma also taking 2 wickets, costing them 26 runs. Romario Shepherd bowled 2 tight overs, costing only 18 runs together with 1 wicket, to make sure there is no momentum late in the innings.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru Innings

With a target of 158, RCB looked comfortable pursuing the target from the word go. Devdutt Padikkal set a strong base for the innings, scoring an aggressive 61 off 35 balls, striking the ball cleanly. The innings was anchored by Virat Kohli showing his class with an effort-free 73* off 54 balls, coupled with a catch from Rajat Patidar (12 runs), leading RCB to the coveted score of 159/3 runs off 18.5 overs. Although Arshdeep Singh (1/26), Harpreet Brar (1/27), and Yuzvendra Chahal (1/36) all spun the PBKS team into a crafty innings, the low number was manageable, and RCB's clinical performance contributed to a convincing series win by 7 wickets.

PBKS vs RCB: Post Match Reactions

Shreyas Iyer (PBKS Captain): "It is good. Just a minor niggle. I feel I should be fine after this game. He pointed out that his side is playing an aggressive brand of cricket but cannot adjust to the slowing afternoon wickets, ultimately setting themselves undefendable scores. The batting unit started quite well, but the middle order didn't take advantage of their starts. He expressed that he was quite happy with how the bowlers performed. Iyer praised RCB's comprehensive win game led by Kohli but emphasized his team needs to adjust to old balls that do not skid as well, and he expects the middle order to wake up and needs to step up. He wants to use this opportunity of the next 6 days to make sure the squad is in a good state and a positive and free-going mindset in preparation for their next game.

Devdutt Padikkal (RCB): He spoke of the importance of his partnership with Kohli after Phil Salt was dismissed. He credited that his current form is from months of hard work. When batting with Kohli, he feels confident, knowing that Kohli can anchor innings and also finish off a game. Chinnaswamy Stadium being in his home city makes him feel special, and he hopes to continue contributing. Padikkal admitted that RCB has struggled with their batting at home and took responsibility for him devising a better plan.

Rajat Patidar (RCB captain): Patidar commended the bowlers for being tight with their lines, with everyone contributing at different points. The changes in fielding positions that we talked about last night had a positive response today, and he hopes to win the toss and play well in the next match to fix previous games.

Virat Kohli (Player of the Match): Kohli labeled the win as crucial for RCB moving from 8 to 10 points in the qualification and stated Padikkal was responsible for winning the game with his innings and outlined his role, indicating that he was anchoring one end and trying to accelerate when needed. Kohli said he has to adapt to conditions, learn from the first couple of games, use partnerships in T20 cricket, and let other players dominate while holding the innings together.

The IPL 2025 season is heating up, and as always, Virat Kohli finds himself right in the middle of the action. As the tournament reaches a critical stage, every match is beginning to feel like a mini-final. The clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) has quietly grown into a fierce rivalry. After PBKS outplayed RCB in their previous encounter, this fixture at the Kings’ home ground was seen as a golden opportunity for RCB to strike back and settle scores.

Fans across social media were buzzing with excitement ahead of the game, throwing around terms like “revenge” to describe the intense build-up. With both sides eyeing a spot in the playoffs, the stakes were higher than ever. PBKS began their innings strongly thanks to a decent start from openers Priyansh Arya (22) and Prabhsimran Singh (33). However, after the fall of the first wicket, the batting lineup struggled to maintain momentum as the RCB bowlers tightened their grip in the middle overs.

The match reached its turning point during the ninth over when a bizarre and hilarious mix-up between Josh Inglis and Nehal Wadhera led to a crucial runout. Both batters ended up stranded at the same end, and the RCB fielders were quick to capitalize. Virat Kohli, always sharp on the field, was at the center of the moment, celebrating passionately after Wadhera was sent back to the pavilion for just 5 runs off 6 balls. Kohli’s fiery reaction went viral, capturing the high stakes and tension of the budding PBKS-RCB rivalry.

PBKS batters succumbed under relentless RCB bowling

Punjab Kings managed 157/6 in their 20 overs, starting strong with a brisk opening partnership. Priyansh Arya scored 22 off 15 balls, while Prabhsimran Singh added 33 off 17, helping PBKS reach 62/2 early on. However, the middle order faltered with skipper Shreyas Iyer falling cheaply for 6. Nehal Wadhera’s stay was cut short due to a miscommunication with Josh Inglis, resulting in a run-out in the ninth over. Inglis remained the top scorer with a quick 29 off 17 balls before falling to Suyash Sharma.

The finishing touches were left to Shashank Singh and Marco Jansen, who added stability with unbeaten knocks of 31* and 25*, respectively. Despite their efforts, PBKS couldn’t accelerate in the death overs. Krunal Pandya was impressive with 2/20, while Suyash Sharma also struck twice. Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled economically, but others like Hazlewood and Shepherd proved expensive. The early promise faded, leaving PBKS with a par total at best.

<![CDATA[IPL 2025: Why is Liam Livingstone not playing in PBKS vs RCB clash?]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ipl-2025-why-is-liam-livingstone-not-playing-in-pbks-vs-rcb-clash/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ipl-2025-why-is-liam-livingstone-not-playing-in-pbks-vs-rcb-clash/ Sun, 20 Apr 2025 10:18:54 GMT

In an important game against Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru decided to drop England all-rounder Liam Livingstone. RCB captain Rajat Patidar confirmed this at the toss. Many fans were surprised, but there were some clear reasons behind this move.

Livingstone was bought for ₹8.75 crore in the IPL 2025 auction. He is known for hitting big sixes and bowling useful spin. But in this season, he has not played well. In 6 innings, he scored only 87 runs, with an average of 17.40 and a strike rate of 127.94. His best score was 54. He also hit only 4 fours and 7 sixes, much less than expected.

Livingstone didn’t help much with the ball either. RCB already has two main spinners in Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma, so his bowling wasn’t needed much. Since he didn’t perform well with the bat and wasn’t used much with the ball, the team decided to make a change. RCB needed more from him in the middle overs, but he often got out while trying to hit big shots. This made things harder for the rest of the batting line-up.

Poor Form with Bat and Ball, Romario Shepherd Comes In

In his place, RCB brought in West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd. He was bought for ₹1.5 crore. Shepherd is a fast bowler and also hits big shots in the lower order. Since the match is being played in the afternoon in Mullanpur, where dew won’t be a big problem, RCB decided to go with pace instead of spin. At the toss, Patidar said, “We're going to bowl first. Wicket looks decent, won't change much. Shepherd comes in for Livi.”

Livingstone has played well in past IPL seasons. In 2022, he scored 437 runs at a strike rate of 182. But this year, his form has dropped. In T20 cricket, form is very important, and right now, Livingstone is struggling. This decision shows that RCB is ready to take bold steps. They want players who are in form and can help them win games. Livingstone may return later in the season, but for now, RCB is hoping that Romario Shepherd can give them the edge.

RCB opener Phil Salt is busy providing fiery starts, while Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, and captain Rajat Patidar have the responsibility to control the innings. While they have strong bowlers like Josh Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Krunal Pandya, but need more support from others.

Nehal Wadhera demonstrated top finish with a 19-ball 33* against RCB and Shashank Singh provided additional power to their lineup. Arshdeep Singh holds the PBKS record of 86 wickets while Chahal handles the spin duties together with Marco Jansen and Harpreet Brar making up the pace unit. In their defensive performance against KKR PBKS showed their ability to adapt their tactics successfully by bundling out the opposition for 111.

RCB needs Virat Kohli to deliver stability along with Phil Salt's offensive abilities to gain redemption in his matches. Rajat Patidar joined Tim David as PBKS's new force in the middle batting lineup after David secured his first IPL half-century against PBKS. Hazlewood earned three wickets in Match 34 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar leads the pace line along with Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma forming the spin department. The four away victories of RCB exist in stark contrast to their three losing home games which creates additional pressure to succeed at Mullanpur.
