Perth Scorchers (SCO) are set to lock horns with Sydney Sixers (SIX) in the grand finale of the BBL 2025-26 at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday, January 25. The Scorchers, led by Ashton Turner, enjoyed a dominant league phase, finishing at the top of the points table with seven wins and three losses from their 10 matches, showcasing remarkable consistency throughout the season.

Most notably, the Scorchers defeated the Sixers by 48 runs in the Qualifier, successfully defending a modest 148-run target to book their place in the final.

In the Big Bash League 2025-26 Final, Perth Scorchers will take on Sydney Sixers on Sunday, January 25, at Optus Stadium, Perth. Two of the most successful teams in BBL history will face off against each other for the title.

Perth Scorchers had a good league stage as they finished on top of the table with seven wins out of ten matches. The Ashton Turner led side has been consistent throughout the season and has already beaten the Sixers twice, including a convincing 48-run win in the Qualifier. Playing the final at home gives Perth an added advantage.

Sydney Sixers ended the league phase in second place, winning six matches. They have shown good form at key moments but will be keen to turn things around against the Scorchers, who have had the upper hand this season. These two teams have already met twice in this season, and Perth Scorchers came out on top both times. Recently in the qualifier Scorchers defeated Sixers by 48 runs.

SCO vs SIX: Pitch Report

The pitch at Optus Stadium usually helps the bowlers early, with uneven bounce making stroke play difficult at times. Batting second has not been easy here this season. Teams batting first will look to put 140–150 runs on the board and defend it using smart bowling and variations.

Perth Scorchers have enjoyed a largely consistent campaign, overcoming minor setbacks to stay among the frontrunners. They have won four of their last five matches and will be eyeing a third straight victory to end the league stage on a high. Already assured of a playoff berth, a win would strengthen their seeding. Melbourne Stars have followed a similar trajectory, starting strongly before a mid-season dip. In the Big Bash League 2025-26, Match 36 will take place on Thursday, January 15, featuring the Melbourne Renegades versus the Perth Scorchers at Docklands Stadium in Melbourne. These two teams faced off earlier in the season when the Renegades defeated the Scorchers; the Renegades will look to replicate that result at home. As the tournament enters its final stages, these teams are on the hunt for valuable points to help boost their position on the points table.

This season has not gone as planned for the Melbourne Renegades, who currently have only three wins from eight games and are in seventh place with six points. The Renegades will need to put together a strong series of performances in order to give themselves a chance of reaching the playoffs. The Perth Scorchers, on the other hand, have had a solid season thus far, being in the third position on the points table with five wins out of eight. The Scorchers are hoping to continue their good play down the stretch to earn a spot in one of the top two positions on the points table before the end of the league.

With both teams heading into the contest on contrasting campaigns, the clash promises to be an exciting one. The Scorchers will enjoy home advantage and will be eager to maintain their strong momentum, while the Renegades will look to upset the hosts and improve their standing in the tournament.

The Perth Scorchers, led by Ashton Turner, have been in impressive form this season, securing four victories from six matches to sit second on the points table. Riding a three-match winning streak, they will be keen to extend their dominance. Meanwhile, the Melbourne Renegades find themselves in seventh place after winning two of their five games. However, they come into this fixture with renewed confidence after clinching a victory in the Melbourne derby.

When the Sydney Sixers pulled off a massive signing of Babar Azam, the former Pakistan captain across formats, it was expected to be one of the most exciting signings for the Sydney Sixers ahead of the 2025/26 season of the Big Bash League (BBL). Since he arrived in Australia, the expectation has been sky high for the right-handed batter to show his skills with the bat.

On the curtain raiser of the event, the Sixers faced the Perth Scorchers in the away clash at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The poor weather delayed the start of the proceedings, which saw the game converted into an 11-over per side contest. The Sixers were put into bat first as the Scorchers won the toss and decided to use the ball first as Babar Azam walked as the opening batter.

Sydney lost their left-handed opening batter, Daniel Hughes, on the third ball of the innings as the eyes shifted to the other opener to bail him out of the trouble. His first ball was hit back to the pacer for no run before a replica of a shot took place.

Babar Azam returns for 2 in BBL 2025/26 debut

Babar was nearly dismissed on the third ball of the stay when he was surprised by the bounce of the ball from Joel Parris. The Pakistan batter was late on the pull, with the ball ballooning in the air before falling short of the fielder. He finally opened his account on the fifth ball when he went aerial and came back for a couple.

Watch the video here:

But on the very next delivery, the batter was dismissed as his straight pull shot was caught inside the ring by Laurie Evans. Jack Edward’s unbeaten knock of 46 runs in 21 balls helped the Sydney side to post 113/5 in their 11 overs.

Perth completed the chase in the last over with five wickets in hand as Cooper Connolly smashed a fine knock of 59 runs in 31 balls at a strike rate of 190.32 with the help of three boundaries and five sixes. Babar will next appear at the Sydney Cricket Ground on December 17 against the Adelaide Strikers.

Perth Scorchers (PS) will face Sydney Sixers (SS) in Match 1 of BBL 2025-26 at the Perth Stadium on Sunday, December 14. This opening match brings back memories of the first-ever BBL final in 2011-12, where these two teams faced each other.

The Perth Scorchers had a below-par season last year, finishing fifth on the points table with only four wins from ten matches. As captain Ashton Turner leads the side again, the Scorchers will be eager to make a strong start at home and set the tone for a better season.

The Sydney Sixers enjoyed a solid campaign last season, ending second in the league stage. However, they failed to deliver in the knockout stages and were booted out early. Despite having experienced players in their roster, the Sixers are looking to begin a fresh campaign with a victory in the first game.

PS vs SS: Pitch Report

The pitch is a good one for an even game between bat and ball. Pacers get a lot of bounce initially, while spinners get a little support. The game becomes easier once batters are in, which is why teams prefer to chase on this wicket. Getting 190 to 200 can be a competitive score here.

The Women’s Big Bash League 2025, is moving ahead with its Match No. 12, where Adelaide Strikers Women are scheduled to play against Perth Scorchers Women on Sunday, November 16, at the Junction Oval in Melbourne. Both teams will look to strengthen their position as the tournament steps into its next phase.

The Adelaide Strikers Women are currently fourth in the points table. They have one win from two completed games, and a further match had no result due to rain. The Strikers have been in good early form and will be looking to carry on that momentum on Sunday with another win.

The Perth Scorchers Women are positioned sixth with one win from three matches. Two losses have been part of the journey so far for the Scorchers, and they will look to bounce back. Improvement in rhythm, getting back to winning ways, and collecting important points will be what the Scorchers aim for to rise up the order.

AS-W vs PS-W: Pitch Report

The Junction Oval pitch is very good for batting, especially for teams with a chase.. Batters that spend time at the crease will score freely due the surface playing consistent and offering value for shots. Fast bowlers won’t get very much help and the spinners might see some help in the first few overs. Captains might elect to bowl first with the good chasing conditions.

The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2025 will continue with Match No. 8, where Perth Scorchers Women (PS-W) will face Melbourne Stars Women (MS-W) on Friday, November 14, at the Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide. This is the first of two matches lined up for Friday in the tournament.

The Perth Scorchers Women did not have the ideal start to their season, as they lost their first game to the Sydney Sixers Women by 10 wickets. However, they came back strongly in their next game and beat Brisbane Heat Women easily. Having won a game and lost one, the Scorchers are currently positioned fourth on the points table and look to carry this good form forward.

On the other hand, the Melbourne Stars Women had their opening match against the Adelaide Strikers Women washed out because of rain. They have one point on the board and will be hoping to start their campaign properly with a strong performance on Friday. With experienced players on their side, the Stars will aim to earn two points and move up in the standings.

PS-W vs MS-W: Pitch Report

The pitch at the Karen Rolton Oval is fresh for this season. Even though this is the first WBBL match at this venue in 2025, the ground has hosted 31 WBBL games in the past. The pitch usually helps batters, offering good bounce and making it easier to score runs. Spinners might get some help as the match goes on. Teams that bat first have often done better here, so the captain winning the toss is likely to choose to bat first.

The overseas player draft for the 2025-26 seasons of the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) and Big Bash League (BBL) will be held on Thursday, June 19, ushering in a fresh season of top-class cricket in Australia. The WBBL draft starts at 4 PM AEST and is followed without a gap by the BBL draft. These drafts enable every one of the eight clubs in each of the competitions to choose from a large number of international players to complete their rosters.

How the Draft Operates

The draft is a formal four-round format.

  • Round 1: Platinum players only
  • Round 2: Platinum and Gold
  • Round 3: Gold and Silver (in reverse order)
  • Round 4: Silver and Bronze

Every team needs to pick at least two overseas players except for their pre-signed players. Clubs can miss only one round. Every team has already pre-signed one overseas player prior to the draft, and players have to be assigned to a round according to how much they are earning on their contracts. Clubs can also pick a fourth overseas player as a substitute.

Draft Order

Draft order was determined through a weighted lottery based on the standings of the prior season.

  • WBBL Round 1 Order: 1. Sydney Sixers, 2. Adelaide Strikers, 3. Melbourne Stars, 4. Perth Scorchers, 5. Hobart Hurricanes, 6. Sydney Thunder, 7. Melbourne Renegades, 8. Brisbane Heat.
  • BBL Round 1 Order: 1. Brisbane Heat, 2. Adelaide Strikers, 3. Melbourne Renegades, 4. Perth Scorchers, 5. Hobart Hurricanes, 6. Sydney Sixers, 7. Melbourne Stars, 8. Sydney Thunder.

There was a trade in the BBL draft, with the Thunder and Scorchers exchanging picks in the second and third rounds.

Pre-signed Players (Prior to Draft)

  • Adelaide Strikers: Laura Wolvaardt, Jamie Overton
  • Brisbane Heat: Nadine de Klerk, Colin Munro
  • Hobart Hurricanes: TBC, Chris Jordan
  • Melbourne Renegades: Hayley Matthews, Tim Seifert
  • Melbourne Stars: Marizanne Kapp, Tom Curran
  • Perth Scorchers: Sophie Devine, Finn Allen
  • Sydney Sixers: Amelia Kerr, Babar Azam
  • Sydney Thunder: Chamari Athapaththu, Sam Billings

Notable Overseas Nominees

More than 600 overseas players have thrown their names into the pool for the upcoming WBBL and BBL drafts, which promises to be a great mix of talent from around the globe. The BBL has some exciting names included in the nominations, including Pakistani superstars Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, Haris Rauf, and Mohammad Rizwan. England's T20 hitters include Jofra Archer, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, and Alex Hales. All of these big names are among the nominations for the BBL, along with New Zealand's Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, and Kane Williamson, who has declared himself available for three matches. Bangladesh's Mustafizur Rahman and West Indies speed demon Shamar Joseph round out the marquee BBL names.

For the WBBL, we have some Indian stars with award-winning resumes. Jemimah Rodrigues, Shikha Pandey, and Yastika Bhatia have all made nominations to the process. West Indies' Deandra Dottin and Pakistan's Fatima Sana also add some firepower to the draft. England has featured great players like Sophie Ecclestone, Heather Knight, Danni Wyatt, and Alice Capsey, while South Africa's Shabnim Ismail and Chloe Tryon help improve the quality of nominations.

Player Salaries

WBBL:

  • Platinum: $110,000
  • Gold: $90,000
  • Silver: $65,000
  • Bronze: up to $40,000

BBL:

  • Platinum: $360,000-$420,000
  • Gold: $300,000
  • Silver: $200,000
  • Bronze: up to $100,000

Retention and Replacement Rules

Each club can have a single retention pick, typically for players who played or signed for the team the season before. Replacement players will need to be selected from the draft pool unless sanctioned under exceptional circumstances.

Season Timeline and Scheduling Conflicts

  • WBBL: Late October to early December
  • BBL: Mid-December to late January

The BBL would face schedule conflicts with other competing leagues such as ILT20 (Dec 2 - Jan 4) and SA20 (Dec 26 - Jan 26). Yet, Cricket Australia still has hope that international stars could be free for the second part of the season and playoffs.

Although there were initial worries about the clash of T20 leagues causing overseas players to miss the BBL, Dobson was feeling positive about this season having better outcomes than in earlier years. He highlighted the fact that instead of a mass exodus at the later stages of the BBL, it's possible that some of the players playing in the ILT20 would be available for the back end of the tournament and finals. He added that this coincided with Australia’s Test stars’ availability, as no international matches are scheduled in January after the Ashes series.

"I think so," Dobson told ESPNcricinfo. "We probably pay more attention to our teams and players and who wants to come and play in the Big Bash. And we're hearing from players that they still love coming to the BBL. It's a bucket list for many of them. We're always looking at windows and player availability, but ultimately, I think our job is to make sure our comp is as appealing as it can be."

The 2025 drafts promise high drama and strategic decisions as clubs shape their overseas core. With global superstars up for grabs and new scheduling dynamics in play, this draft season is shaping up to be one of the most competitive yet.
