Both Vidarbha and Punjab posted over 300 runs in their allotted 50 overs batting first at the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru and bundled out the opposition cheaply to claim massive victories and qualify for the semifinals of the 2025/26 season of the Top 4 batting performances from Day 8 of Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2025/26

Devdutt Padikkal of Karnataka heads into the semifinal as the leading run getter of the season so far with 721 runs in eight innings at an average of 103, thanks to his four centuries and two half-centuries at a strike rate of more than 100.

A look at the top four batting performances from Day 9 of Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2025/26

1. Yash Rathod (Vidarbha)

Vidarbha’s middle-order batter, Yash Rathod, has enjoyed a decent record in List A cricket with an average of 42 for his close to 1000 runs hangs to his three centuries and three half centuries but in the last five clashes of the ongoing season of Vijay Hazare Trophy, he has got 29 runs in three innings which was a concern for the management heading into fourth quarter final against Delhi at the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru.

However, walking out at 136/3 in 27 overs, he proved the finishing flourish to the side. After the dismissal of Atharva Taide, there was a need for someone to stay till the end, and Yash played a sensational knock of 86 at a strike rate of 117.81, thanks to his eight boundaries and two sixes to help them reach 300 in their 50 overs.

Brief Scores: Vidarbha 300/9 (Yash Rathod 86, Atharva Taide 62, Nitish Rana 2/19) beat Delhi 224 (Anuj Rawat 66, Nachiket Bhute 4/51, Harsh Dubey 3/36) by 76 runs.

2. Prabhsimran Singh (Punjab)

Prabhsimran Singh has been in outstanding touch for Punjab at the opening spot in this season of the 50-over domestic format, as he celebrated two half-centuries in the last four innings against Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh with an aggressive batting approach. He continued the same style of batting against Madhya Pradesh in the third quarter-final.

Along with Harnoor Singh, they put up an opening partnership of 116 runs where the captain and wicket-keeper batter smashed a fine knock of 88 runs at a strike rate of over 100, thanks to his ten boundaries and a couple of sixes.

Brief Scores: Punjab 345/6 (Prabhsimran Singh 88, Anmolpreet Singh 70, Venkatesh Iyer 2/60) beat Madhya Pradesh 162 (Rajat Patidar 38, Sanvir Singh 3/31) by 183 runs.

3. Neal Wadhera (Punjab)

After Prabhsimran Singh’s 88 and Anmol Preet Singh’s 70-run knock at number three, it was important for someone from the middle order to provide Punjab the late fire in the death overs. Nihal Wadhera, who came into the 11 for this clash, blasted a splendid knock of 56 runs in 38 balls, thanks to his eight boundaries and one six.

Wadhera was in a fine touch during the last season of the Indian Premier League for the Punjab Kings, where he batted 15 times and managed 369 runs at a strike rate of over 145, which bailed the Kings out of trouble on most occasions.

Brief Scores: Punjab 345/6 (Prabhsimran Singh 88, Anmolpreet Singh 70, Venkatesh Iyer 2/60) beat Madhya Pradesh 162 (Rajat Patidar 38, Sanvir Singh 3/31) by 183 runs.

4. Anmolpreet Singh (Punjab)

Punjab’s number three batter, Anmolpreet Singh, came into this game with a 50 on his back against Mumbai in the last clash, along with his 72 against Himachal Pradesh in the previous week. The right-handed batter has enjoyed a decent List A career with 2238 runs in 58 innings at an average of 43, with the help of six centuries and 14 half-centuries.

After a strong start of a 116-run opening partnership between Prabhsimran Singh and Harnoor Singh, Anmolpreet provided them the same fire, knocking off 70 runs in 62 balls with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes that pushed them to over 300 by the time he got dismissed.

Brief Scores: Punjab 345/6 (Prabhsimran Singh 88, Anmolpreet Singh 70, Venkatesh Iyer 2/60) beat Madhya Pradesh 162 (Rajat Patidar 38, Sanvir Singh 3/31) by 183 runs.

Another emerging cricket talent is blooming under Indian cricket legend Yuvraj Singh. The emerging talent is known other than Prabhsimran Singh, who recently hammered a match-winning 102-run knock against the Australia A team for a winning cause. It was a commendable victory for India A, chasing a target of 317 runs.

Prabhsimran played his quickfire innings, maintaining a strike rate of 150.00 against 68 balls. His innings was laced with eight 4s and seven 6s. Cricket fans across social media platforms praised the top-order batter for the power-packed batting display. A day after the India A vs. Australia A unofficial one-day match, a video of the top-order batter has started to surface on Instagram. The video is all about the preparations of Prabhsimran Singh and how he keeps himself ready for the matches.

Through this video we can see how Yuvraj Singh is guiding the batter. The former international is seen instructing the Punjab-born during the net session. It is now well known that Yuvraj has been working as a mentor and coach for multiple talented Indian batters, including Abhishek Sharma, Priyansh Arya, and Prabhsimran Singh.

Prabhsimran's IPL 2025 was remarkable. He was one of the key instruments to guide Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final of the tournament, where they lost against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Singh has been with PBKS since IPL 2019. 2025 proved to be his best campaign for the franchise.

In 17 matches and 17 innings, the right-handed batter accumulated 549 runs at a batting average of 32.29, including four well-controlled half-centuries. Against Australia A team, he scored a century and a half-century as well in Kanpur.

A commendable victory for India A team chasing Australia A (IND A vs AUS A) team's first innings: 316 runs at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. The high-scoring encounter between these teams was more entertaining because of Prabhsimran Singh, who played a match-deciding102-run innings against 68 deliveries, maintaining a strike rate of 150.00. His innings was laced with eight 4s and seven 6s.

The Australia A team, captained by Jack Edwards, registered 316 runs in the first innings of the match. The Aussie skipper himself scored 89 off 75, which was the highest individual score of the match for the team. Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana did their bowling part well by clinching 6 wickets together. Arshdeep took 3, and Harshit took 3. Ayush Badoni claimed a brace. Arshdeep was the best bowler of the game, as he spent only 38 runs in 10 overs, including a couple of maiden overs, and claimed 3 scalps.

The target of 317 runs was stiff enough to chase down. But India A was ready with their own version of attacking batting. For the opening pair, Prabhsimran and Abhishek Sharma stitched an 83-run partnership in 11.2 overs.

PBKS praised the effort

Australia A team found some glimpses of hope as they quickly got rid of Sharma and Tilak Varma. But Prabhsimran Singh was then in full flow, making strokes on both sides of the field. The opener showed no mercy for Cooper Connolly, Tanveer Sangha, or Jack Edwards. On the first ball of the 20th over, he made a poor connection on a Tanveer Sangha delivery and was caught out. Prabhsimran departed for a well-made 102, which was for a winning cause.

Punjab Kings, the runner-up of the previous Indian Premier League season, from their official social media platforms shared an appreciation post for the batter's heroic innings in Kanpur. In the IPL 2025, the batter was one of the key instruments for PBKS' dominating run in the group stage.

Recently, a video shared by cricket icon Yuvraj Singh brought back memories for many young Indian cricketers of the iconic moment he hit six sixes in an over during the 2007 T20 World Cup. The moment continues to inspire a new generation of cricketers who say they owe their love of the game to that moment.

Abhishek Sharma revealed, “The entire country knows that I was inspired by Yuvi Paaji when he helped India win the 2007 T20 World Cup and hit those six sixes. That was the moment when I got inspired and realized that I wanted to play for the country.” Similarly, Prabhsimran Singh shared, “Everyone knows about those six sixes he hit. That's the one memory I want to share from my side.”

All-rounder Abdul Samad added, “Yuvi Paaji's six sixes against England are everyone's favourite.” Nehal Wadhera, another batter, echoed the sentiment: “Yuvi Paaji, I can never forget the time when you hit six sixes off Stuart Broad.
I believe that was the moment when you made every Indian feel proud.”

A Moment That Lives Forever

Golfer Karandeep singh Kochhar recalled watching the feat as a child: “I still remember being a little kid, sitting at home and watching that wonderful moment. I remember the iconic Ravi Shastri commentary as well. I think it's a moment that will live on forever. When I still see that, like, four-five-minute highlight, you know, it's just such an inspiring moment still.”

The second day of the third round of the Buchi Babu Trophy 2025 saw several players putting in their hard work for better results with the bat and ball in hand. Jharkhand was at a strong position against Punjab, while on the other hand, Mumbai was inches closer to getting to Haryana’s score of 364 runs.

On the third and final day of the round, Jharkhand set a massive target of 403 runs in 45 overs for the Punjab side, who started quickly and raced away to 25/0 in their three overs. Prabhsimran Singh celebrated a fine half-century in just 30 balls as they went off to a flying start to 86/0 in nine overs.

TNCA President’s XI also got the better of the Chhattisgarh side by 59 runs. Their teenage off-spinner, J Hemchudeshan, who took a six-wicket haul in the first innings, got another five-fer in the second. Maharashtra has also secured a massive victory in the 374 run defense.

They restricted Himachal Pradesh to 194/6 in 45 overs to earn a victory by 180 runs as Ankush Bains top scored for the HP side with 87. It wasn’t, however, enough to get them anywhere close to the target. The left-handed opening batter, for the Punjab side, is leading their charges for an unlikely hoist.

<![CDATA["It was a turning point..."- Prabhsimran Singh credits two former India internationals for turning around his IPL career]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/it-was-a-turning-point-prabhsimran-singh-credits-two-former-india-internationals-for-turning-around-his-ipl-career/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/it-was-a-turning-point-prabhsimran-singh-credits-two-former-india-internationals-for-turning-around-his-ipl-career/ Sat, 23 Aug 2025 15:52:06 GMT

Punjab Kings (PBKS) opener Prabhsimran Singh credited two former cricketers for helping him evolve as a more mature batsman. Singh has been with the Punjab-based franchise since 2019. For the first four seasons, from IPL 2019 to IPL 2022, he got to play only 6 matches. His luck started to shine when Shikhar Dhawan came as the captain in 2023. He assured Singh about regular chances. From then, the emerging keeper-batter started to grow his batting skills at a rapid pace. During a recent conversation, the 25-year-old opener said that it was Shikhar Dhawan who helped him a lot for a possible turnaround. In IPL 2023, Prabhsimran smacked his first IPL century, which was against Delhi Capitals. He concluded the season with an impressive 358 runs at a strike rate of over 150 after playing 14 matches.

In the previous Indian Premier League, as captain, he proved to be an integral part of PBKS at the top of the batting order. In 17 matches, the batter scored 549 runs at an average of 32.49 and a strike rate of 160.52.

"When Shikhar paaji was appointed as the captain two years ago, he gave me the surety that I will play all the games. In the same season, I scored a century. It was a turning point in my career," the PBKS opener said.

Yuvraj Singh also played a vital role

Prabhsimran also mentioned how another former India international, Yuvraj Singh, helped him to shape his playing style. Singh and some other well-known Indian talents used to practice under Yuvraj. Those training sessions proved effective for Prabhsimran Singh.

"Yuvi paji has played a big role in my career. I always talk to him like a brother and not like a player. I, Abhishek, Naman Dhir, and Nehal Wadhera practice with him. We had 10-12 days of camp with him last time around. He knows very well on what exact things we have to work on. On a weekly basis, I get to speak with him. He has supported me a lot," he added.

<![CDATA[WATCH: Arshdeep Singh reflects on Shreyas Iyer's captaincy for PBKS in IPL 2025]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/watch-arshdeep-singh-reflects-on-shreyas-iyer-s-captaincy-for-pbks-in-ipl-2025/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/watch-arshdeep-singh-reflects-on-shreyas-iyer-s-captaincy-for-pbks-in-ipl-2025/ Sun, 01 Jun 2025 17:41:04 GMT

Shreyas Iyer has become the catalyst for Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) incredible comeback in IPL 2025. Ahead of their clash against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 at Narendra Modi Stadium on June 1, fans and experts alike have applauded Iyer’s composed but commanding leadership. The 30-year-old, a Champions Trophy winner, has taught a side that had not reached the playoffs in 10 seasons discipline and belief in themselves. His batting performances and heady decision-making have played a significant role in what has been the best season for PBKS in ages.

In a recently aired Star Sports video, several of PBKS’s young players recalled Iyer’s leadership and how he has cultivated a winning environment for the franchise. Leading wicket-taker Arshdeep Singh revealed how Iyer gives his team complete backing and lets them play without any baggage. “I’ve played under Iyer in the Duleep Trophy, and he was a great leader. He doesn’t give strict instructions; he just tells us to trust ourselves and what we are capable of. He creates a very selfless team environment, and that is why we all want to give our best for him.” Arshdeep’s sentiments were echoed by other young stars, emphasizing the unifying effect Iyer has had on the squad.

Prabhsimran Singh, who opened the batting alongside Iyer, also spoke about the instincts and fearlessness of the Skipper. “He talks about trusting your instincts all the time. If you have to second-guess a shot, don't hit it. But if you are confident, then go for it," Prabhsimran said. “He is batting like a world number one - clean hitting, smart decisions, and match-finishing innings. He gets us to play with freedom and clarity." The message from the PBKS young core definitively notes Shreyas Iyer's captaincy has changed their perspective.

Shreyas Iyer on the verge of making IPL history

In the last IPL season, Shreyas Iyer led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title, demonstrating he is made of captaincy steel, and now leading PBKS, he is on the brink of making history. A win in IPL 2025 will make Iyer the third captain to win two consecutive IPL titles and the only captain to do so with two franchises, marking him a bona fide leader in IPL history.

Shreyas Iyer, in unfortunate circumstances, injured the index finger of his hand while practising for the game against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur. During the match, Iyer did bat but not at his usual number. The right hand batter came further down, looked down and out, and didn't have the captain's armband too while his side took the field in the second innings. Instead, he was substituted, and Shashank Singh led the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in his absence. However, there has been no confirmation yet from any source, neither him nor the franchise, about his availability in the games ahead. With PBKS affirming their playoff spot last night, and yet having a couple of matches more to play in the league, they must be prepared for all the eventualities.

The North Indian franchise's regular skipper became the first player in the history of the tournament to make three teams qualify for the playoffs as captain. He first accomplished this feat as the leader of the Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2019 and 2020. Moreover, in 2020, he took them to the finals, only to get beaten by the Mumbai Indians (MI). Second, he led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the title glory last year, and now this season with PBKS, he, as their captain, has made them qualify for the playoffs after 11 years, and the first time since 2014. PBKS, then known as Kings XI Punjab, had lost in the final to KKR.

In a worst-case scenario, if PBKS are forced to explore captaincy options due to the possibility of Shreyas' unavailability, then there can be a few candidates for the prestigious role. A deeper look into that might help understand which players can lead the franchise. Add to it the magnitude of the upcoming games, and it would be a serious headache for the team management if it goes that route.

Shashank Singh

Shashank Singh

Having been made the stand-in skipper, in Iyer's absence, against RR, he seems to have the full trust of the head coach, Ricky Ponting, and his backroom staff. Although he was guided by Shreyas and the coach while defending their total, but if left alone, he will feel confident of leading the side in this extremely vital business stage of the tournament. When batting, lower down the order for the Kings, aiming to finish well, he plays maturely and responsibly, and this character might aid him if asked to don the captaincy hat.

Prabhsimran Singh

Prabhsimran Singh

Although he has never captained any team, in any format and on any level, now being the first-choice wicketkeeper of the team in Josh Inglis' absence, he can be thrown into the skipper duties. From behind the stumps, he has a bird's eye view of the game and sees the action unfold in front of him. This game sense can help him while making all the bowling changes and setting the field accordingly.

Arshdeep Singh

Arshdeep Singh

The leader of the bowling attack for the team, he is always seen giving his valuable inputs towards making things happen. He is progressive on the field and would relish if made the captain. Being already in the think tank, he will have an added advantage and would feel strategically confident enough to lead his side in case the regular skipper cannot.

PBKS would hope that Shreyas Iyer recovers in time for their upcoming games and is deemed fit enough to not only lead but also contribute massively with the bat, as he is known for and has done positively for the team. Taking a player of his calibre out of any side would create a huge hole in their chances to progress and put a stake forward for winning the silverware.
