The seventh round, which was the final group-stage round of the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, ended on Thursday, January 8. Out of 24 teams, only 12 qualified for the quarterfinals.

Several players made good use of their chances. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Dhruv Jurel scored centuries, while Hardik Pandya and Jitesh Sharma impressed with scores in the 70s. Sarfaraz Khan also made headlines by hitting the fastest half-century of the tournament, reaching his fifty in just 15 balls.

However, many IPL players failed to perform for their teams. Players like Abhishek Sharma, Priyansh Arya, and Karun Nair could not make an impact in Round 7. Take a look at five IPL stars who disappointed in the match.

1. Abhishek Sharma

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Punjab opener Abhishek Sharma failed to make an impact against Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The left-hander scored just eight runs off 10 balls. However, Punjab won the close match by one run.

In his previous two games, Abhishek scored 30 against Uttarakhand and 48 against Maharashtra. Despite being a regular in India’s T20I side, he averages only 33.78 in List-A cricket. He has scored 2,196 runs in 69 matches, including four centuries and eight half-centuries. Because of this, players like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devdutt Padikkal remain ahead of him in the ODI race due to their ability to play long innings.

2. Priyansh Arya

Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi opener Priyansh Arya also struggled with the bat against Haryana. He was dismissed for six runs off four balls. Despite his failure, Delhi won the match easily by nine wickets while chasing a small target of 106.

Arya has been inconsistent this season, with three single-digit scores in seven matches. His low scores include one against Gujarat and five against Odisha. However, he also played some good knocks, scoring 80, 72*, 78, and 74. The 24-year-old will aim to bounce back in the quarterfinals.

3. Urvil Patel

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel have had a poor Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign. He has scored 194 runs in seven matches at an average of 27.71. His best score was 64 against Odisha.

In the latest match, Urvil was out for 15 runs off nine balls as Gujarat suffered a heavy 145-run defeat against Saurashtra. Gujarat won only three of their seven matches and failed to qualify for the quarterfinals. CSK had bought Urvil mid-season last year and retained him at his base price ahead of IPL 2026.

4. Prithvi Shaw

Delhi Capitals (DC) batter Prithvi Shaw has also failed to find consistency in the tournament. He was dismissed for two runs against Chhattisgarh and followed it up with a one-run dismissal against Goa.

Apart from a score of 71 against Mumbai, Shaw has struggled throughout the competition. The Maharashtra opener has scored 193 runs in six innings at an average of 32.16, including two half-centuries. With Maharashtra reaching the quarterfinals, the team will hope Shaw delivers in the knockout matches.

5. Karun Nair

Delhi Capitals batter Karun Nair was disappointed in the match against Madhya Pradesh. The Karnataka batter scored 10 runs off 14 balls as his team was bowled out for 207. Madhya Pradesh later won the match by seven wickets.

This was Nair’s third straight low score, after managing 14 and a duck against Rajasthan and Tripura. However, he earlier played two strong innings, scoring an unbeaten 130 and 62 against Kerala and Puducherry. Delhi Capitals retained him for his base price of INR 50 lakh ahead of IPL 2026.

Virat Kohli played a calm and classy innings in Bengaluru to help Delhi start their Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign with a win over Andhra. The match was played behind closed doors at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, denying fans the chance to witness Kohli’s masterclass live.

Chasing a target of 299, Kohli looked comfortable against a decent Andhra bowling attack that included Nitish Kumar Reddy and Tripurana Vijay. He seemed to continue his good form from the recent ODI series against South Africa, where he scored heavily.

Delhi were in early trouble after losing opener Arpit Rana for a duck. Kohli walked in at No. 3 and quickly brought calm to the chase, allowing young Priyansh Arya to settle before taking charge himself.

The celebrations were simple and restrained, reflecting Kohli’s focus rather than emotion. His knock of 131 runs from 101 balls marked his 58th List A century and helped Delhi chase down the target with more than 12 overs to spare, securing a four-wicket victory.

Kohli also shared a big 160-run partnership with Nitish Rana, which put the match completely in Delhi’s control. Earlier, Andhra were powered by a century from Ricky Bhui, but it was not enough. While Tuesday (September 30) was washed out by rain, the India A vs Australia A first unofficial ODI was started on Wednesday (October 1), which was the reserve day for the match. India A openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh provided a strong start with a 135-run partnership for the first wicket. After Singh was dismissed for 56 runs in 53 balls with six fours and two sixes, Arya continued his smashing with the skipper Shryeas Iyer. 

Arya scored 101 runs in 84 balls with 11 fours and five sixes. Then, Iyer and Riyan Parag set up another strong 132-run partnership for the third wicket. With five fours and five sixes, Parag scored 67 runs in just 42 balls.

Skipper Iyer and Ayush Badoni then quickly added a 73-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Captain Iyer scored 110 runs off just 83 balls with 12 fours and four sixes. Meanwhile, before losing his wicket in the last over, Badoni scored a quick-fire 50 off 27 balls with four fours and three sixes. 

While all the top five India A batters scored 50+ runs, including two centuries, India A scored 413/6 in 50 overs. It was the third-highest unofficial ODI total for India A, the highest in the last seven years. 

Australia A had to use seven bowlers, but the visitors had no clue at all. Captain Will Sutherland was their only bowler to pick up more than one wicket in that innings, as he had the bowling figures of 9-0-73-2.

In reply, Australia A were bowled out for only 242 runs in 33.1 overs, as India A won by 171 runs, their largest List A win against Australia A and fourth largest win against any team in this format. While the opener Mackenzie Harvey (68) and skipper Will Sutherland (50) scored half-centuries, Lachlan Shaw (45), Cooper Connolly (33), and Jake Fraser-McGurk (23) failed to capitalise on their quick starts. 

Among the India A bowlers, Nishant Sindhu got four wickets, as he had the bowling figures of 6.1-0-50-4, while Ravi Bishnoi got two wickets in his eight overs (2/49). While Australia A were once fighting at 169/2 in the 21st over, they ultimately failed to handle the constant high required run rate pressure.

Outer Delhi Warriors bounced back strongly, chasing a huge target to beat North Delhi Strikers by 7 wickets. North Delhi put up 193 runs, with Vaibhav Kandpal smashing 73 from 40 balls and Arjun Rapria scoring 33 from 19. But regular wickets meant they were bowled out before reaching 200.

Kandpal played a brilliant knock and Rapria added quick runs, but the team kept losing wickets and couldn’t finish well. The chase was all about Priyansh Arya’s explosive 76 from just 30 balls. He got good support from Rishabh Drall (38), while Keshav Dabas (46) and Dhruv Singh (26) guided the team home with ease and 12 balls left.

In Match 12 of the Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2025, East Delhi Riders (EDR) won a run chase of 232 runs after a great run chase against Outer Delhi Warriors (ODW) by 5 wickets with just 4 balls left.

EDR had won the toss and decided to bowl first, but ODW’s batters came out swinging. The pitch offered little help for bowlers, and runs flowed freely in the match. Still, EDR’s middle order, led by Anuj Rawat, brought the chase easily and won the match.

ODW got off to a dream start with captain Priyansh Arya leading the way. He scored a brilliant 111 off 56 balls, hitting 7 fours and 9 sixes. Karan Garg scored quick runs 43 of 24 balls, while Keshav Dabas and Harsh Tyagi added useful late runs. Even though wickets fell in the last few overs, ODW still managed a massive 231/7.

For EDR, Rounak Waghela was the pick of the bowlers with 2/34 from 3 overs. Rohit Yadav and Akhil Chaudhary also took important wickets. The chase didn’t start well for EDR, as they lost Sujal Singh and Hardik Sharma in the first two overs. But opener Arpit Rana kept his cool and counterattacked, scoring 79 off 45 balls with 8 fours and 4 sixes. Then came the big show from captain Anuj Rawat, who tore into the bowling with 84 off just 35 balls, smashing 9 sixes.

In the end, Mayank Rawat’s unbeaten 32 off 12 balls made sure there were no last-minute nerves. EDR crossed the line in 19.2 overs, capping off one of the most thrilling run chases of the DPL 2025 season.
