The Guyana Amazon Warriors outclassed the Rangpur Riders in style to win the 2025 edition of the Global Super League (GSL 2025). At the age of 46, South African spinner Imran Tahir did a splendid job in the final match by taking a couple of wickets, and as the captain of the team, he guided the Warriors to clinch the championship.

From the beginning of the tournament, Riders was one of the favorites to win the championship. Fulfilling the expectations, they reached the title decider stage. There they found the toughest hurdle of the tournament. To defeat Rangpur Riders, Warriors produced the highest total of the 2025 season of the title race, which was 196 for 4. Riders could only manage to get 164 on the scoreboard in reply.

In front of their cheerful home crowd, the Guyana Amazon Warriors lift off the trophy at Providence Stadium on Friday night. Apart from the main trophy, there were a few other awards as well to credit some individual performances. Like the man of the match award.

Other awards of the championship

The man of the match award went to Warriors batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The Afghanistan international scored 66 off 38 to set the Warriors up for a substantial total. A huge stand of 121 runs between Johnson Charles (67 off 48) and the Afghan keeper-batter. During the making of 66-run innings, Gurbaz smashed six 4s and four 6s, elevating the strike rate to 173.68.

Imran Tahir got the prestigious man of the tournament award for his inspiring bowling numbers. Throughout the tournament, the experienced spinner attracted 14 wickets, including a brace in the final.

History has been created in the second edition of the Global Super League (GSL) 2025. For the first time ever, the cricketing world got to witness a new title champion. The Guyana Amazon Warriors, under their veteran leader Imran Tahir, defied all odds and marched to their maiden GSL title win. The Warrior Nation was up against the defending champions, Rangpur Riders, who looked all set for a second consecutive title win.

But Tahir and his men outplayed the Bangladesh-based franchise and ruined their party in an epic final clash, beating them comprehensively by 32 runs. Playing at the Providence, the Warriors' home ground, the crowd rallied behind Tahir & Co. and backed them all the way through to bring the trophy home. Rahmanullah Gurbaz's electrifying 66 (38) powered the Guyana Amazon Warriors to an imposing 196-4.

The Rangpur Riders did not start their run chase on an auspicious note, losing their top three well inside the powerplay. Although Saif Hassan and Iftikhar Ahmed joined hands to forge a fighting 73-run stand, the Guyana bowlers were eventually able to overcome them and dismiss Rangpur Riders for 164. This win also marked the Warriors' first victory against the Riders in the short-lived history of GSL.

Imran Tahir & Co. celebrate GSL Title Win

The South African spin-bowling pro, Imran Tahir, has been a revelation for the Guyana-based CPL franchise. He previously led the Warrior Nation to their maiden CPL win in 2023. Then in 2024, his men came agonizingly close to securing two back-to-back title wins on the bounce but narrowly missed out in the final. Guyana Amazon Warriors' latest title win in the GSL certainly puts the icing on top of the cake. Tahir enjoys a glorious record as a Warriors' skipper, and his side's most recent triumph in the GSL final further demonstrates his tactical brilliance.

Even at age 46, Tahir continues to strive hard, be it as a bowler or as a captain. He rounded up the GSL 2025 season as the highest wicket-taker, claiming 14 wickets at a stunning average of 9.28. At a time when players do not think of exploring any forms of cricket after the age of 40, Tahir ages like a fine wine and continues to push on to bring his side endless success.

In the 8th match of the 2025 Global Super League (GSL), Rangpur Riders played Dubai Capitals at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. Rangpur Riders won the toss and decided to bat first. Rangpur sustained their nerves with both bat and ball to register a nail-biting 8-run win and move on to their unbeaten streak in the tournament.

Rangpur Riders Innings

Choosing to bat first, Rangpur scored a respectable total of 158/5 in their 20 overs. Iftikhar Ahmed was the rock at the crease, with 41 of 32 deliveries played with controlled stroke play. Soumya Sarkar gave valuable top-order support with 36 from 28 deliveries. Nurul Hasan, the skipper and wicketkeeper, played an aggressive cameo of 34 from just 18 balls to lift the total towards the end. Despite some tidy spells from Dubai’s bowlers—particularly Shakib Al Hasan (1/16 in 4 overs) and Qais Ahmad (1/28)—Rangpur found boundaries at key moments. Rohan Mustafa picked up a wicket in his solitary over, but the bowlers couldn’t stop Rangpur from reaching a competitive total.

Dubai Capitals Innings

Chasing 159, Dubai Capitals got a stable start with Sediqullah Atal top-scoring with 38 off 31 balls. Sanjay Krishnamurthy chipped in with a useful 27 off 22, while Dominic Drakes added late fireworks with 22 from 16 balls. However, consistent strikes from Rangpur’s bowlers kept the pressure on. Saif Hassan was the standout performer with the ball, grabbing 3/20 in 3 overs, while Khaled Ahmed (2/14) and Rakibul Hasan (1/16) supported brilliantly. Dubai lost their final wicket in the 20th over, bowled out for 150 in 19.2 overs—just 8 runs short.

Rangpur Riders are still undefeated in the tournament after this victory, moving to the top of the GSL 2025 points table; they look in a strong position to defend their title.

In one of the closest contests of the 2025 Global Super League so far, the match 5 of Rangpur Riders edged out Hobart Hurricanes by a solitary run in a thrilling finish at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. The Hurricanes, despite a strong fightback with the ball and a solid middle-order effort, fell just short of the target set by the Rangers.

Rangpur Riders Innings

Batting first, Rangpur Riders managed a competitive 151/6 off 20 overs. The top performer was Kyle Mayers, who smashed 67 off 42 balls, keeping the innings together with measured aggression. He had Ibrahim Zadran going strong alongside him, adding a useful 43 off 31 balls. Though losing traction marginally in the death overs, Rangpur pushed beyond 150. For the Hurricanes on the bowling side, Usama Mir impressed with a return of 3/15 in 4 overs, while Fabian Allen (2/38) and Odean Smith (1/20) contributed wickets to keep the total within reach.

Hobart Hurricanes Innings

Pursuing 152, Hobart Hurricanes faltered under pressure and were bowled out for 150 in 20 overs, just 1 run short of victory. Mohammad Nabi scored a gritty 44 from 36, with Ben McDermott chipping in with a fast 34 from 19 and Odean Smith scoring a late cameo of 20 from 13 balls. But tight death bowling and wickets at regular intervals halted their pursuit. Khaled Ahmed starred with the ball for Rangpur, taking 4/26, as Iftikhar Ahmed (2/13) and Rakibul Hasan (1/19) picked under pressure to win the match.

The second season of the Global Super League starts on July 10 with the opening match between Central Districts and Dubai Capitals!

The 2025 Global Super League will be held in Guyana from July 10 to 18. All eleven matches will take place at the Providence Stadium. Five teams will take part in this year’s competition—the defending champions Rangpur Riders, Central Districts (New Zealand), Hobart Hurricanes (Australia), Guyana Amazon Warriors (West Indies), and Dubai Capitals (UAE).

Every team will meet all four other teams once in a round-robin format, with a mix of day and night matches. At the end of the league phase, the top two teams, based on either points or net run rate, will meet in the final to decide the champion.

The points system is easy to follow: two points for a win, one point for a draw or no result, and zero points for a loss. This format rewards the most consistent teams and leads to a result in the big final! The Rangpur Riders will be aiming to defend their title after winning the competition in style in the first edition.

Rangpur Riders, winners of the first edition, are set to defend their title at the 2025 Global Super League, coming into Guyana with a strong and battle-tested squad for the July 10-starting tournament. The Bangladesh-based franchise wins over with a combination of the inaugural edition, bringing a strong mix of experience, international flair, and proven match-winners to the Providence Stadium in what promises to be another exciting season.

After a slow start in 2024, losing their first three matches, the Riders bounced back with style to win their last three matches and clinch the title. With the right ingredients of explosive batting, disciplined bowlers, and relentless leaders, Rangpur demonstrated why they are one of the most resilient and harmful teams in the competition.

Led once again by the inspirational leadership of Nurul Hasan, the team has retained important players such as Soumya Sarkar, last season's tournament top run-scorer, and Kamrul Islam Rabbi, who spearheaded the bowling effort. In preparation for the 2025 tournament, the Riders have strengthened their ranks with the best overseas stars like Kyle Mayers, Tabraiz Shamsi, Iftikhar Ahmed, and Ibrahim Zadran.

<![CDATA[Can cricket coaching be performed remotely? Former Pakistani head coach turns this elusive notion into a reality]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/can-cricket-coaching-be-performed-remotely-former-pakistani-head-coach-turns-this-elusive-notion-into-a-reality/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/can-cricket-coaching-be-performed-remotely-former-pakistani-head-coach-turns-this-elusive-notion-into-a-reality/ Mon, 30 Jun 2025 08:16:45 GMT

Former Pakistani head coach Mickey Arthur will remotely oversee Rangpur Riders' title defence in GSL 2025 while being as far as 7500 KM away. Arthur is currently in the UK and has an active coaching contract with Derbyshire in Division Two of the 2025 County Championship. Due to his ongoing coaching commitments with Derbyshire, Arthur has been forced to stay back and will be monitoring Rangpur Riders from another corner of the world.

The GSL 2025 will be staged in Guyana starting from July 10. Arthur's unavailability for the second edition of the GSL was made public by Rangpur's director, Shanian Taneem.

So how will the physical absence of the head coach impact the defending champions?

While Arthur will not be physically present with the team throughout the entirety of the tournament, the franchise has immense faith in his abilities. In order to fill the void, it was decided to appoint Greg Smith, who will be in charge of the players in person. Greg will be in constant touch with the head coach on a virtual basis. It is believed that Arthur fully backs Greg and has a lot of faith in him. Whilst actively coaching Derbyshire, Arthur will continue to relay his instructions and feedback to his players via Greg.

"As the English County Championship is ongoing and Mickey is coaching Derbyshire County Cricket Club, he is unavailable at the moment. Therefore, we are appointing Greg Smith as our head coach. He is someone Mickey fully trusts. Mickey will stay connected with the players and continue to offer his input. Greg will lead the team under Mickey's guidance."

Furthermore, the team director also added that Arthur's inputs were previously taken when the team was being formed ahead of the league.

"Mickey Arthur was our head coach during the previous Global Super League and the last edition of the Bangladesh Premier League. We have strong confidence in his abilities. While forming our squad, we remained in constant touch with him and discussed which players would perform well on Guyana's pitches."

In terms of technological advancement, the world has come a long way. With the advent of highly sophisticated tech, the world has become a small place, and long distances no longer seem to be a barrier anymore when it comes to facilitating seamless communication. But there also comes the downside.

While there are tools available that foster effective communication, this form of coaching can minimize physical player interaction and can also open up chances of miscommunication, especially during crunch games. To drive overall excellence and player growth, face-to-face coaching is necessary to foster a social bonding between players and coaches.

The defending champions, Rangpur Riders, have officially confirmed their squad for the upcoming 2025 Guyana Global Super League (GSL), to be held from July 10 to 18 at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence. A major highlight of their announcement is the inclusion of three Pakistan cricketers, Iftikhar Ahmed, Akif Javed, and Khawaja Nafay, all set to make their GSL debuts.

Veteran all-rounder Iftikhar, known for his powerful finishing and utility with the ball, brings valuable T20 experience from leagues like the BPL and LPL. Left-arm pacer Akif Javed, another LPL product, adds firepower to the bowling department. Meanwhile, middle-order batter Khawaja Nafay enters his second overseas league after two promising BPL stints.

Rangpur target second GSL title as Pakistan players join squad

Rangpur has retained its leadership core from last season’s dramatic title run. Nurul Hasan continues as captain, with Soumya Sarkar the top scorer in GSL 2024, returning to anchor the batting lineup. Pace spearhead Kamrul Islam Rabbi, instrumental in their bowling success last year, is also part of the squad. Rangpur’s 2024 campaign was one to remember after starting with three straight losses, the Riders rallied with three consecutive wins to lift the trophy. Their blend of attacking flair, discipline, and leadership proved decisive.

The franchise, already a heavyweight in the Bangladesh Premier League with a title in 2017 and consistent playoff finishes since, now looks to extend its dominance to the GSL stage once again. The announcement coincides with a wider update from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which has issued No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to 13 players for overseas T20 leagues. Among those approved is Khawaja Nafay, while clearances for Iftikhar and Akif are expected shortly.

The defending champions, Rangpur Riders, have officially announced their squad for the upcoming 2025 ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL), set to be held at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence from 10 to 18 July. As titleholders, the Riders will return to Caribbean shores looking to replicate their dramatic title run from last year and retain their crown.

In the 2024 season, Rangpur Riders turned it around with a grand flourish—beginning with three straight losses followed by three consecutive victories to capture the title. Their gritty fightback, which was fueled by good leadership, an attacking bowling pack, and aggressive top-order hitting, endeared them to fans and entrenched themselves in GSL lore.

With one of the best records in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) for consistency, the Riders arrive with a history of high-quality cricket. BPL champions in 2017 and constant playoff hopefuls ever since, Rangpur continues to show us the characteristics of will and reserve that define quality T20 franchises.

Star Power and Strategic Depth

The Riders have kept the mainstay of their 2024 championship team intact. Wicket-keeper captain Nurul Hasan comes back to captain the team, accompanied by top scorer of the tournament Soumya Sarkar and pace head Kamrul Islam Rabbi. They are supported by a combination of local heroics in Mohammed Naim Sheikh, Yasir Ali, and Abu Haider Rony, each of whom contributes crucial domestic and international experience.

The global playing list includes dynamic West Indian opener Kyle Mayers, South African wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, Afghan batting prodigy Ibrahim Zadran, and experienced Pakistani all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed.
