Nevertheless, not everything was going perfectly for the West Indies, as one of their key players would suffer an unfortunate injury during the innings.

Romario Shepherd, a key part of the Windies white-ball setup, would only bowl four overs before leaving the field with discomfort to the thigh area. The way the all-rounder hobbled out created an immediate cause for concern for teammates, and fans alike. A short time later the West Indies team management confirmed that Shepherd had pain in his left hamstring, and he would not be returning to the field for the New Zealand innings. 

The update also confirmed that though Shepherd was unfit to continue bowling, he was still available to bat should it be required. In an official statement, West Indies Cricket said he would be monitored closely and indicated that management did not want to take any chances with one of their leading all-rounders. This precautionary measure is meant to lessen the risk of Jenkins aggravating the injury as there are still two ODIs to be played.

Shepherd's injury has also caused a strong reaction from fans in India, particularly Royal Challengers Bengaluru supporters. The 30-year-old was a critical part of RCB's historic title win in 2025, which ended a lengthy trophy drought and his historic final quarter played an essential role in the franchise's ascendance to significant success. Given his all-area contributions throughout RCB's successful campaign, the franchise considers him an integral part of their future planning.

Just a day before the match, on November 15, RCB revealed their retention list for IPL 2026, with Shepherd highlighting the names expected to maintain the roster prevailing under Rajat Patidar's leadership. Since IPL is just a couple of months away, any injury concern surrounding the Caribbean behemoth will cause worry for the franchise. For now, the club and RCB faithful will hope that Shepherd's hamstring issue is minor, and that he is fully recovered in-time for a crucial season, built on the notion of defending the championship in Bengaluru.

Aiming to chase the target, the West Indies got off to a poor start as opener Amir Jangoo scored only five runs. Alick Athanaze added 31 runs, and Ackeem Auguste scored 24. Skipper Shai Hope left after scoring just one run.

New Zealand kept the pressure on and did not let the middle order score big. Romario Shepherd and Shamar Springer tried to fight back. Shepherd scored 49 runs off 32 balls, and Springer added 39 runs.

The West Indies came close, but Shepherd’s dismissal slowed them down. They were limited to 168 runs, and New Zealand won the match by nine runs, taking the lead in the series. The fourth T20 is also in Nelson on Monday.

The NZ vs WI 3rd T20 match is scheduled to take place on Saturday at Saxton Oval, Nelson. New Zealand levelled the series with a 3-run win against the West Indies in the last game. The 13th game of the tournament was a high-scoring contest between Guyana and St. Lucia; both teams scored two hundred-plus runs, with SLK as the winner of the night. Shepherd powered GAW to register 202 runs in their 20-over limit, batting first.

Before the arrival of the all-rounder, Guyana was struggling, losing top 5 batters for only 78 runs. From 78/5 to 202 for 6, that became possible mostly because of Romario Shepherd's heroics. Unfortunately, his efforts went in vain as the opponent easily chased down the tough target in just 18.1 overs. Performance for RCB in IPL 2025

The Guyana-born proved effective for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as well during their IPL 2025 triumph, with Romario Shepherd and RCB able to claim their maiden IPL trophy. With the Bengaluru-based franchise, the 30-year-old scored 70 runs in 3 innings, including an unbeaten 53-run knock. 

His bowling, though, needs some improvement to maintain a reputation as a pace bowling all-rounder. In 4 CPL 2025 matches, he has so far gotten only 3 wickets for GAW. And for RCB, he took 6 wickets in 8 matches at an economy rate of 10.78, which was pretty expensive. 

West Indies have announced a 15-member squad for the ODI series against Pakistan. The three-match series will be played in Trinidad. The team will be led by Shai Hope and includes several young players who have performed well for the West Indies recently. All-rounder Romario Shepherd makes a return to the ODI squad for the first time since the series against Bangladesh last year.

Coach Sammy Focused on World Cup Qualification

The West Indies are going into the series after losing the T20I series 2-1 at home. Head coach Daren Sammy said this ODI series is important for the team’s chances to qualify for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

“Pakistan will be a different challenge as we push for automatic qualification,” Sammy said. “Our main goal is to qualify, but we also want to build a winning mindset and team unity for long-term success.”

He added, “Playing against stronger teams like Pakistan gives us a chance to earn important ranking points that will help us in the road to the World Cup.”

West Indies are currently ranked 10th in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings. Pakistan are ranked 4th, behind India, New Zealand, and Australia.

In Match 16 of the Major League Cricket season 2025 , the Seattle Orcas played against San Francisco Unicorn. The Seattle Orcas won the toss and chose to bowl first, hoping to break the San Francisco Unicorns’ winning streak in this match. But it was the San Francisco Unicorns who once again stole the show and won the easy game, securing their sixth win and holding on to the top spot .

San Francisco’s bowlers turned up the heat Haris Rauf led the way with 4 for 32, and captain Matthew Short surprised everyone with 3 for 12 in just 2 overs. Romario Shepherd capped off a brilliant all-round performance by picking 2 for 16 in his 3-over spell.

Seattle were bowled out for 144 in 18.2 overs, giving San Francisco a comprehensive 32-run victory and keeping their perfect season alive.
