West Indies Fight Back but South Africa Stay on Top

South Africa, who were finalists in 2024, looked set to chase a small total. They took four wickets in the powerplay and reduced West Indies to 83-7. However, Romario Shepherd and Jason Holder added 89 runs for the eighth wicket and helped West Indies reach a total of more than 170.

Chasing the target, Aiden Markram scored a half-century in just 27 balls. He shared a 95-run opening stand with Quinton de Kock, who made 47 off 24 balls before getting out in the eighth over. Ryan Rickelton also played well and scored 45 not out off 28 balls.

Markram finished the match with his 11th boundary and gave South Africa their fifth win of the tournament in Ahmedabad. The team is now very close to the semi-finals. They will qualify if India beat Zimbabwe, while West Indies must win their last match against India to stay in the race.

Abhishek Sharma Makes Strong Comeback with Quick Fifty

Indian opener Abhishek Sharma, who was struggling for form in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, made a strong comeback against Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday. He had been out for a duck in three matches in a row earlier in the tournament.

However, in this important match, Abhishek answered his critics with a quick 50 off just 26 balls. He hit three fours and four sixes and scored at a strike rate of over 180.

India are now in a strong position against Zimbabwe and are moving well towards a big total in their first innings.

South Africa will play West Indies in an important ICC T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 match at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Even though India is not playing, the match result may still influence India’s chances of reaching the semi-finals, and many Indian fans are expected to support South Africa in this game.

If South Africa beat West Indies on Thursday and then India beat Zimbabwe, the points table will show South Africa at 4 points in first place, West Indies and India tied at 2 points each, and Zimbabwe at 0 points. In that case, South Africa will qualify for the semi-finals. Additionally, in the next India vs West Indies match, the winner will advance to the semi-finals regardless of the Net Run Rate.

Addressing this matter, social media users have shared many funny memes and jokes showing Indian fans supporting South Africa against West Indies, since a South Africa win would help India’s chances of qualifying, while a West Indies win could make the semi-final race more difficult for the Indian team.

India must beat Zimbabwe to keep semi-final hopes alive

The match between India and Zimbabwe is a crucial evening encounter, and it is a must-win game for both teams to stay in the semi-final race. If India lose against Zimbabwe, their campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 will end, and they will be eliminated from the tournament. If Zimbabwe lose the match, their chances of reaching the semi-finals will also end.

For India to qualify for the semi-finals, winning the upcoming match is very important. The team must perform well against Zimbabwe to stay in the tournament. It is also important that the South Africa team beat the West Indies in today's match.

If the West Indies beat South Africa, then India will need to win their remaining two matches against Zimbabwe and the West Indies, and they will also have to depend on other results to qualify for the semi-finals.

West Indies posted the second-highest total in T20 World Cup history and defeated the Zimbabwe national cricket team by 107 runs in the Super Eights on Monday. The Caribbean side scored a team record 254 for 6. Shimron Hetmyer, who was dropped on 9 and 70, smashed 85 runs off 34 balls with seven sixes. Rovman Powell added 59 runs from 35 balls.

Not only the batters, but the spinners also impressed. Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie delivered an excellent bowling performance at the Wankhede Stadium. They played a key role in defending the big total of 254 runs. After the strong batting display, the two left-arm spinners controlled the game with the ball. Together, they took seven wickets and did not allow Zimbabwe to build any partnership.

Addressing this matter, former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said that tougher challenges are still to come in the Super Eight stage. He believes the real test will be against stronger teams.

Hosein gave early breakthroughs in the power play and finished with figures of 3 for 28. He bowled an important maiden over and dismissed Brian Bennett and Ryan Burl. He also kept Sikandar Raza under pressure with dot balls.

Du Plessis Warns of Tougher Tests Ahead

Gudakesh Motie, who came into the attack after the powerplay, also bowled very well. He took the wicket of Dion Myers in his first over and finished with 4 for 28. The left-arm spinner troubled Zimbabwe’s middle order and dismissed Sikandar Raza and Tashinga Musekiwa in the same over.

Former South Africa national cricket team captain Faf du Plessis praised both Motie and Akeal Hosein. However, he said that bowling against Zimbabwe after scoring 254 runs is different from bowling against strong teams like India and South Africa.

"I saw them in South Africa. And I have played a lot of cricket with and against both of them. Amazing spinners. If there's a little bit of something in the wicket, both of them [will exploit it]," du Plessis was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Bigger Challenge Against India and South Africa

Du Plessis added that the real test will come in the next matches. He said playing against strong batting teams, especially those with many left-handers, will challenge the West Indies spinners.

"But the test will come now when they play against a lot of lefties in India, how're they going to respond to that, and South Africa played both of them really well in South Africa," he concluded.

West Indies have won five matches in a row in the T20 World Cup 2026, including their 107-run win over Zimbabwe. They will next face South Africa on February 26 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

South Africa and West Indies meet for the final time in the T20I series at The Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, on Saturday, January 31. South Africa have already sealed the series and will be aiming for a clean sweep, while West Indies will be desperate to avoid a whitewash.

South Africa have been dominant throughout the series. In the first match at Paarl, they chased down 174 with ease. They were even more impressive in Centurion, where Quinton de Kock’s brilliant century helped them hunt down a huge 222-run target comfortably. The Proteas’ batting has clicked perfectly, and their confidence will be sky-high going into the last game.

West Indies have shown flashes of promise with the bat but have struggled badly with the ball. Their bowlers have not been able to restrict the scoring in both the matches, especially towards the end. To end the tour on a positive note, they will need a much sharper bowling effort and better execution of plans.

SA vs WI: Pitch Report

The Wanderers is generally a batsman-friendly wicket with a most number of runs. Pace bowlers can bowl a bit of movement off the seam early with the new ball, but once the batters have settled, it gets easier to score runs. Chasing is always the better option in such a venue, as defending can be quite difficult towards the end.

South Africa will take on the West Indies in the second T20I of the three-match series at SuperSport Park, Centurion, on Thursday, January 29. After winning the opening game, the hosts will be aiming to seal the series, while the visitors will look to bounce back and stay alive.

Even after one wicket fell, Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton kept the scoring steady and finished the chase with ease, giving South Africa a 1-0 lead in the series. However, West Indies will hope to respond strongly in Centurion with their captain, Shai Hope, returningA better batting effort and sharper bowling will be key if they are to challenge the hosts.

Shai Hope will captain the West Indies team in this series. This is a golden opportunity for both teams to prepare before the T20 World Cup, which will be held next month.
