Dewald Brevis, the most costly player in SA20 history, is excited to join Pretoria Capitals for the upcoming Season 4. In an interview with SA20, he spoke on moving away from MI Cape Town and beginning a new chapter in his own town of Centurion, and how great it is to come back to SuperSport Park, and the memories he shared around that stadium when he grew up there.

Brevis was the headline story at the SA20 player auction, with Pretoria Capitals securing his services for INR 8.3 crore, making him the costliest signing in the league’s history. The move reunites him with familiar South African faces and adds explosive firepower to an already strong Capitals lineup.

The young star said, “I’m very excited. You always reflect back, and I think it was a special three years I had with MI Cape Town. We had our ups and downs, and it was amazing what we did in the last year. I’ll always remember that. But this is a new chapter for me. To be with Pretoria, I’m super excited. It is my hometown. I know SuperSport Park very well—it’s very close to my heart. The ground where me and my brother grew up watching cricket, running around the field, playing next to the field. To be able to be there now, I’m really excited. I can’t wait to see the team, get together with them, and just make memories and have fun.”

Brevis on Pretoria Capitals, SA20 Growth, and Fans

On joining the Pretoria Capitals squad, Brevis said, “I think it’s great. It’s great to have Lungi Ngidi there, we’ve spent a lot of time together. It started in Bangladesh, and we’ve got good memories. Then Lizaad Williams, and a lot of our local guys. I’m so happy for Connor Esterhuizen as well. He’s a great player, and he’ll do great for us. If you look at all the overseas players, I think we’ve got a well-balanced team: a strong batting lineup, power-hitters, guys that will love SuperSport Park. If you look at Rutherford, Andre Russell, it’s a great all-round team. I’m very excited to see how the boys go and how they enjoy playing there, because it’s a beautiful place to bat and play cricket.”

He also spoke about the growth of the SA20 league: “SA20, every year it just gets better. And that’s exactly what’s going to happen. Season 4, the competitive levels will rise, the quality, everything just gets better. The competition, I think, will be even tighter. The teams are always balanced and competitive, and it’s T20 cricket. The conditions in South Africa are some of the best, you get all kinds of conditions. If you play at the coast, Cape Town, everywhere it’s different. That variety is very cool, and it’s what SA20 has to offer. And I think the crowds, I can’t wait for that again. It’s a great time of the year, and it’s going to be lots of fun.”

On why fans should attend, he added, “People would also love to come and watch because everyone is on holiday, relaxed.
So why not come and relax next to the cricket field? We’ll take the bit of pressure, and everyone can enjoy. As a youngster, when it was Test cricket, I was always next to the field or watching on TV. Now it’s a privilege to be able to play during that time and to have your family there next to the field. So, it’s very exciting times.”

<![CDATA[[WATCH] Durban Super Giants make unique post to announce new captain for SA20 2025/26]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/watch-durban-super-giants-make-unique-post-to-announce-new-captain-for-sa20-2025-26/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/watch-durban-super-giants-make-unique-post-to-announce-new-captain-for-sa20-2025-26/ Sat, 13 Sep 2025 12:31:59 GMT

The two-time SA20-winning captain, Aiden Markram, headlined the auction for the Durban Super Giants as their highest-paid player in history. The T20I captain of the South Africa side, who is already part of the Super Giants family in Lucknow of the Indian Premier League (IPL), fetched R14 million at the paddle bidding war.

The Durban side made a unique post of a ship going towards their new mission for the 2025/26 season, as they named Aiden Markram as their new leader of the side. It was given after they didn’t retain or get back their former leader, the left-arm spinner of the side, Keshav Maharaj. After the last season’s poor performance, a change was expected anyway.

Markram, the 30-year-old, has smashed 4950 T20 runs in 190 innings at an average of 30.74 and a strike rate of 133.67 with 32 fifties and one century. The Centurion-born has clubbed 967runs overall in SA20 at a strike rate of more than 130 with five fifties and one century.

With a huge superstar of the shortest format, Heinrich Klassen, in the side, the speculation was whether Markram would get the responsibility of leadership, but his fine CV of two titles for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape has perhaps pushed him to the position. He is expected to open with Davon Conway in the format.

In the spin department, they will have to seriously great spinners, Noor Ahmed and Sunil Narine. Jos Buttler is expected to bat at the number three position as they will have the mixture of youth and experience of Kwena Maphaka and Gerald Coetzee in the pace bowling department.

Durban will begin their campaign against the MI Cape Town on December 26 through the curtain raiser at Newlands before their first home clash two days later against the same side at Kingsmead.

<![CDATA['The Price Tag Reflects His Past Performances' – SHR star batter advice to brevis as SA20 auction sets new milestones]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/the-price-tag-reflects-his-past-performances-shr-star-batter-advice-to-brevis-as-sa20-auction-sets-new-milestones/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/the-price-tag-reflects-his-past-performances-shr-star-batter-advice-to-brevis-as-sa20-auction-sets-new-milestones/ Thu, 11 Sep 2025 21:05:35 GMT

The SA20 Player Auction has taken place and produced several notable discussion points, with views from several key stakeholders in South African cricket. Super Giants wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen had words of advice for record-signing Dewald Brevis, Pretoria Capitals Head Coach Sourav Ganguly spoke about his team’s new acquisition, and League Commissioner Graeme Smith reflected on the growth and seriousness of the league. Klaasen emphasized the auction price for Brevis represents his past success and ultimately should not represent pressure for the future. He also indicated the sport is about ups and downs and new players must use the opportunity within the SA20 to show their ability with confidence.

“It’s important for Brevis to remember that the price tag he’s earned is because of what he’s already achieved, not what he still has to do. In this game, you can train as hard as you want and still get out on the first ball; that’s just part of the job. The price reflects his past performances, his work ethic, and the many boxes he’s ticked along the way, all of which give him the best chance to succeed,” said Klaasen.

“Over the next three years, I don’t see his team releasing him, so this period is about building towards the next auction and showing what more he can bring. But ultimately, that big price tag is a reward for his past performances and the potential everyone knows he has,” Klaasen added.

Ganguly on Brevis for SA20’s Rise

Pretoria Capitals Head Coach Sourav Ganguly compared SA20’s growing stature to the IPL, highlighting the value of domestic players in franchise cricket. “As you’ve seen in the IPL, domestic players hold immense value, and it’s the same across world cricket, including here in South Africa. It was expected that players like Aiden Markram and Dewald Brevis would attract big bids given their availability and the number of retentions. Brevis is an exciting talent; his game has improved, and we saw that against Australia in the recent series. In auctions, though, money isn’t always a reflection of a player’s quality; it comes down to supply and demand. We’re delighted to have Brevis with us. The Centurion offers a good wicket, and I’m sure he will enjoy playing there,” Ganguly said.

“There’s also a lot of talent coming out of that region, which I wasn’t fully aware of before this auction. We’ve received excellent feedback about Brevis from both the MI setup and the South African team. He’s young, and someone we’re looking at as a long-term asset, just like Connor Esterhuizen and some of the exciting young fast bowlers, including a 19-year-old, Bayanda Majola, who is rated very highly. These players will only get better with time. As a franchise, we look at the bigger picture, and we’re very happy to have secured Brevis,” he concluded.

A total of 541 players are confirmed for the fourth season of SA20, but there are no Indians in the final list.
