Scotland is now in deep trouble after losing their previous ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier, 2025 match against Italy. Italy on the Verge of T20 World Cup History After Stunning Win Over Scotland

The Italy men’s cricket team is just one step away from making history. On Wednesday (July 9), they pulled off a thrilling 12-run win against Scotland at The Hague in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier 2025. With this victory, Italy have moved closer than ever to qualifying for their first-ever T20 World Cup, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka in early 2026.

After three matches, Italy now sit on top of the points table with five points.
Their final group game is on Friday (July 11) against hosts Netherlands at Sportpark Westvliet. If they win, they will seal their place in the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Even if they lose, all hope isn’t lost. They’ll still have a chance to qualify provided they stay ahead of Scotland and Jersey on the points table.
Right now, both Scotland and Jersey have 3 points each and will face off on Friday. Only one can reach 5 points, but Italy have a stronger net run rate, giving them an edge.

Captain Joe Burns, a former Australian Test opener who now leads Italy, called the moment “very surreal.” The 35-year-old said the team is proud but knows there’s still work to do.
“We can’t celebrate too hard just yet,” Burns said, “but to beat a quality side like Scotland is a huge reward for everyone who’s worked so hard behind the scenes.”

He added, “This could be just the beginning. The team is full of emotions right now we’re so close to the World Cup, it’s hard to believe.” The 2024 T20 World Cup saw first-time appearances from teams like USA, Canada, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, and Nepal. USA even pulled off a shock win over Pakistan. Now, Italy are hoping to be the next underdog story at the 2026 edition.

A double-header Wednesday as four teams from the European group will try hard to gain a much-needed win, with the hope of getting a chance in the upcoming ICC T20I World Cup. Today, the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier will witness a couple of matches. The first match of the day will be between Italy and Scotland, and the next game will be between Guernsey and the Netherlands. On pen and paper, the Italy vs. Scotland match is looking more interesting, as both teams are on the same points, but because of the Net Run Rate, Italy remains at the top of the points table.

Scotland will step onto the field with boostedconfidence, as they defeated the Netherlands in their previous match. The Netherlands cricket team, today, has a great chance to get back on the winning track. Their rival for tonight, Guernsey, has been experiencing an extremely poor run for the last few matches. The points table of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier can be looked at differently after the double fixtures.

Greaves got the man of the match award for his 3-wicket bowling spell to dismantle the Dutch side.

As of now, Italy and Scotland both have3 points after playing a couple of matches. But with a +2.971 Net Run Rate, Italy is still leading the race. Scotland will look to grab a win with a big margin to better their NRR, which is now +0.300. Italy has started their qualification phase with a big win versus Guernsey. <![CDATA[Scotland suffer massive setback in T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/scotland-suffer-massive-setback-in-t20-world-cup-europe-qualifier/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/scotland-suffer-massive-setback-in-t20-world-cup-europe-qualifier/ Sun, 06 Jul 2025 18:21:06 GMT

In a significant setback for Scotland's chances of getting direct qualification for the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, their group match against Guernsey in the Europe Qualifier was called off without a single ball being bowled because of continuous rain at Sportpark Westvliet, The Hague, on Saturday. Toss never happened because the outfield was still too damp for play, and the officials had to call off the match early in the day.

Scotland, ranked among the favorites to advance from the five-nation tournament, is now under added pressure after losing points from a game that was supposed to be a comfortable one against a lower-ranked Guernsey team. The rainout evens out the playing field and offers a big chance to both Jersey and Italy, two teams still in the running to challenge for the top two qualification positions.

With only the top two from this round-robin tournament making it to the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year, each point is critical. Scotland had begun their campaign on a strong note, but the weather-triggered no-result interrupted the momentum and can have a long-lasting effect on their net run rate and table standing.

Rain Forces No-Result in Key Clash, Qualification Race Wide Open

The abandoned match results in Scotland and Guernsey both getting one point. Underdogs of the group Guernsey might consider this a positive result against a much superior side, while Scotland will regret the missed chance to enhance their qualification effort.

The teams for the game consisted of a combination of tested campaigners and youth. Scotland's team was capped with known faces such as George Munsey, Richie Berrington, and Safyaan Sharif, whereas Guernsey had captain Oliver Nightingale and wicketkeeper Isaac Damarell.

As the event continues, Scotland will have to recover fast and win their other matches comprehensively. On the other hand, the likes of Jersey and Italy will be looking at this postponed match as a golden opportunity to disrupt the standings and fight for their position on the world stage. As the race to the World Cup intensifies, the weather has provided yet another element of uncertainty to an already closely fought tournament.

Scotland was looking untouchable when they posted 369 runs on the scoreboard, thanks to George Munsey, who played a record-breaking 150-ball, 191-run innings against the Netherlands (Scotland vs Netherland). In the era of T20 cricket and crazy batting, no target seems safe, especially after the ODI match between Scotland and the Netherlands.

Friday's morning starts with the news that a mammoth target has been chased down, not by a traditional big name, but by the Netherlands. The Dutch brigade has registered the third-highest successful run chase in the history of ODI cricket. Before the run chasing by the Netherlands, Munsey's 191 itself was another record breaker—the highest score by an associate batter.

Along with the opener, Matthew Cross also snatched 59 off 49 balls. On the other side, Michael Levitt, with a 2/42 bowling figure, was the most successful bowler of the match for the Netherlands, whose economy rate was below 7.00.

O'Dowd at his Maximum

Max O’Dowd and Levitt (44 off 40) got the Netherlands off to a flying start in the second innings and established the foundation for a historic victory heist. While the second innings batting team was losing wickets at one end, Dowd was scoring runs for fun. He remained not out at 158 with a strike rate of 121.53 and landed his team safely to the home.

In the middle and lower middle order, Teja Nidamanuru and Noah Croes provided the much-needed support to Max with 51- and 50-run innings, respectively. In this manner, the Dutch destroyed the run fortress created by the Scottish in the first innings.

Highest successful chases in ODI history:

 • South Africa 438/9 vs. Australia in Johannesburg, 2006 (target 435)
 • South Africa 372/6 vs. Australia in Durban, 2016 (target 372)
 • Netherlands 374/6 vs. Scotland in Dundee, 2025 (Target 370)

In an exciting ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 match at Forthill, Dundee, Nepal secured an amazing one-wicket win against Scotland in a record chase of 297 runs - Nepal's highest successful ODI chase ever. After Nepal had moved from 152-2 to 192-7 after Scotland's Brandon McMullen (3-47) sparked a collapse, all-rounder Karan KC came in to bat at nine and turned the game with a huge knock of 65* from only 41 balls, with four sixes and three fours, as Nepal edged to an amazing finish amid passionate fans waiting as the final over approached.

After Nepal had won the toss and elected to field, Scotland had posted a formidable 296-7 innings, with Charlie Tear (80), Finlay McCreath (55), and Richie Berrington (40), and vital contributions were also made by Matthew Cross (39).
Nepal's bowlers, led by Karan KC (2-43) and Sompal Kami (2-66), were able to control the damaging runs that Scotland could have made, but chasing 297 was always going to be a tall order. Nepal’s reply started strongly with Kushal Bhurtel’s 53 and Bhim Sharki’s 40, but the loss of key wickets, including captain Rohit Paudel, shifted momentum until Karan’s heroics reignited hope.

The final over, delivered by Mark Watt, was pure theater; needing 7 runs with only two wickets in hand, Nepal lost Sandeep Lamichhane on Watt's first ball, stumped by George Munsey. A wide and a single held Karan on strike, requiring five runs from three balls. Karan hit two twos, making scores level before Watt’s second wide—a hefty wide, which might have brushed Karan’s pad—sealed the win, sparking a pitch invasion by jubilant Nepal fans.

A Defining Victory

This stunning upset saw Nepal, ranked second from the bottom in the League 2 table and four places below Scotland, overcome a recent loss to a Scotland A side in a warm-up match. Karan KC's all-round effort, which saw him take 2-43 and record a winning score of 65*, has brought him wide acclaim for his poise under pressure. This result has given Nepal's campaign a new lease on life, with the potential to shake up the League 2 picture.

After this historic win, Nepal will move on to their next ODI tri-series match against the Netherlands on Wednesday at Forthill, even keener to win. The win not only represents a boost in confidence, but it also suggests they can challenge higher-ranked teams during the World Cup qualifying process.

<![CDATA[Great Britain Cricket Team is set to compete at LA 2028 Olympics with new team]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/great-britain-cricket-team-is-set-to-compete-at-la-2028-olympics-with-new-team/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/great-britain-cricket-team-is-set-to-compete-at-la-2028-olympics-with-new-team/ Sat, 19 Apr 2025 16:06:35 GMT

Cricket is set to return to the Olympic Games after 128 years, and the United Kingdom may enter with a single team under the name of Great Britain. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Scotland have started talks to form a combined team for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The boards get on well and are cooperating to compile a Team GB cricket team, Cricket Scotland Chief Executive Trudy Lindblade says. The reason behind this is that the British Olympic Association (BOA) needs a British team that represents the country in the Olympics as one entity. The 2028 Olympics will include men’s and women’s T20 cricket tournaments. Only six teams will take part in each event, and each team will be allowed to select 15 players. The qualification process has not been confirmed yet by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) or the International Cricket Council (ICC).

England and Scotland Working Together

England is currently ranked second in the world in men’s T20 cricket and third in the women’s rankings. Scotland, however, is outside the top ten in both formats. Forming a single Great Britain team could give both countries a better chance to qualify and compete under the limited six-team rule. In most Olympic sports, athletes from England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland compete together as Great Britain. Football has been an exception, but even there, the BOA hopes to bring a Team GB men’s football team to the 2028 Olympics.

Cricket was last played at the Olympics in 1900 in Paris. Back then, a team from Great Britain beat France in the only match of the tournament. In 2028, the cricket matches will be held at a temporary venue in Pomona, California. The idea of a Great Britain cricket team is gaining strong support. Talks between the ECB and Cricket Scotland are ongoing, and both sides are hopeful. If everything goes well, cricket fans could see a united British team on the Olympic stage for the first time in over a century.

England Women delivered a dominant performance, thrashing Scotland Women by ten wickets in their Group B encounter at Sharjah in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Chasing a modest total of 109, the English openers made light work of the target, reaching it in just 10 overs. This win cements England’s place at the top of the Group B points table, having won all three matches so far.

Safe start for Scotland but struggle against English bowlers

After Scotland Women opted to bat first, openers Saskia Horley and Sarah Bryce provided a steady start, reaching 29/0 at the end of the powerplay. Horley was the first to depart after a 38-run partnership, dismissed for 13 by Nat Sciver-Brunt.

Wicketkeeper-batter Sarah Bryce fought to stabilize the innings but fell for 27 off 31 balls, stumped by Amy Jones off Sophie Ecclestone’s bowling. Captain Kathryn Bryce took charge with a determined 33 off 28 balls, including four boundaries, but received little support from the other end. Scotland Women finished with 109/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

England women’s bowlers dominate

Among the English bowlers, Sophie Ecclestone was outstanding, taking 2 wickets for just 13 runs in her four overs. Ecclestone's efforts, along with contributions from Nat Sciver-Brunt and Charlie Dean, kept the Scottish batters in check. Scotland’s innings was further dented as captain Kathryn Bryce’s resistance ended when she was bowled by Dean.

Alisa Lister provided a brief spark, hitting the only six for Scotland in the tournament, but was dismissed for 11, leaving Scotland with a sub-par total.

English openers make easy work of the chase

England’s opening duo of Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge came out with attacking intent, and by the end of the powerplay, they had already reached 66/0. Both openers completed their half-centuries in style, with Wyatt-Hodge hitting 51* off 26 balls (seven boundaries) and Bouchier smashing 62* off 34 balls (12 boundaries). The English duo wrapped up the match in just 10 overs without losing a wicket, underlining their dominance.

This commanding win takes England Women to the top of Group B, with three wins from three matches and a net run rate of +1.716. South Africa Women, who have played four matches, also have six points but with a slightly lower net run rate of +1.382. Meanwhile, West Indies Women, with four points from three matches and a net run rate of +1.708, must secure a victory in their upcoming match against England Women to keep their hopes alive for a semi-final berth.

England Women thrashed Scotland Women by ten wickets at Sharjah in the Group B match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

After Scotland Women chose to bat first, they scored 109/6 in 20 overs. England Women reached the target in 10 overs without losing any wickets.

Openers set up a safe start

Saskia Horley and Sarah Bryce provided a safe start as Scotland Women scored 29/0 at the end of the powerplay. After a 38-run opening partnership, Horley (13) was dismissed by Nat Sciver-Brunt.

The wicketkeeper-batter Bryce was dismissed for 27 runs off 31 balls with three fours. Sophie Ecclestone took her wicket through a stumping.

Kathryn Bryce played a leading knock

Captain Kathryn Bryce produced some challenges against the English bowlers, but she didn’t have any partners. She scored 33 runs off 28 balls with four fours before Charlie Dean bowled her.

Alisa Lister hit the only six for Scotland Women in the tournament, but she was out for 11 runs.

Ecclestone was exceptional

Among the English bowlers, Sophie Ecclestone was exceptional, as she had bowling figures of 4-0-13-2.

English openers reached the target comfortably

England Women openers Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge both started strongly as they scored 66/0 at the end of the first six overs. Both completed their half-centuries before England Women reached the target. Bouchier scored a 30-ball fifty, and Wyatt-Hodge recorded a 26-ball half-century.

Bouchier scored 62 not out off 34 balls with 12 fours, while Wyatt-Hodge scored 51 not out off 26 balls with the help of seven fours.

England Women are on top of the Group B points table

By winning all three matches of Group B, England Women are leading the points table with six points with a positive net run rate of 1.716. South Africa Women have earned six points after playing four matches, and their net run rate is + 1.382.

West Indies Women have four points after three matches. So, the Caribbean team must secure a win against England Women to open their semi-final qualification chance. West Indies already have a strong net run rate of +1.708.
