Former India cricketer and coach Sanjay Bangar said that Shubman Gill should have responded to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s call for a quick single to avoid the run-out on Day 2 of the second Test against the West Indies.

The two batters were involved in a big mix-up, which led to Jaiswal’s dismissal for 175 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday, October 11.

Jaiswal, who was close to scoring his third double hundred, wanted a quick single early in the first session on Day 2. He played a shot toward mid-off and ran for a single. However, Gill did not respond and sent him back after looking at the ball.

By that time, Jaiswal had already reached too far and could not return to the crease. The fielder’s quick throw to the wicketkeeper led to his run-out. Jaiswal showed his frustration toward Gill before walking back to the pavilion.

Fans and experts have been divided over who was responsible for the mix-up. Sanjay Bangar, however, blamed Shubman Gill, saying that in such situations, the non-striker should trust the striker’s call.

Bangar Criticizes Gill for Run-Out

“The drive was played, and Shubman Gill looked at the ball and started to run from the non-striker’s end before saying no. Because of the speed at which Jaiswal hit the shot, Gill might have been unsure. But the call was the striker’s, and he should have supported it. By then, Jaiswal had already covered a lot of distance,” Sanjay Bangar said on Jio Hotstar.

Yashasvi Jaiswal could not make the most of his strong start on Day 1. The young batter now has seven Test hundreds, with three coming on home soil.

Gill Shines After Jaiswal’s Dismissal

Shubman Gill scored his highest Test score at home as India declared at 518-5 in the IND vs WI 2nd Test 2025.

Gill guided the innings after Jaiswal’s early dismissal on Day 2. After a careful start on Day 1, he played freely to pressure the West Indies bowlers. He built key partnerships with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel, scoring his 10th Test hundred.

Gill remained unbeaten on 129, beating his previous best of 128 from the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Ahmedabad. India declared at 518-5 after Dhruv Jurel was dismissed by Roston Chase in the 135th over.

Team India’s star batter Shubman Gill has officially been appointed as the new ODI captain ahead of the upcoming tour of Australia. The opener replaces Rohit Sharma as the team management has made a big statement about their vision and plan for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Shubman Gill was Team India’s vice-captain during their recent ODI series against England and also in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Amid strong talks about Rohit Sharma’s long-term future, the selection committee has made a clear decision by announcing this major change in leadership.

On that note, let’s look at three reasons why Shubman Gill replacing Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain is the wrong move.

Also Read -Jasprit Bumrah trolls Mohammed Siraj after his brilliant performances in IND vs WI first Test

1. Leadership overload at an early stage could hurt his growth

Taking charge of a Test team in transition and an ODI team that has been dominant recently — both with little room for error — is a huge challenge for any player, even for a talented one like Shubman Gill.

Looking back, Virat Kohli didn’t lead in all formats until 2017, after nearly nine years of international experience. Rohit Sharma became all-format captain only in early 2022. MS Dhoni was an exception, but his rise to leadership came under very different circumstances.

While Gill has full backing from the team management and is seen as the future leader, handling captaincy across formats this early might backfire. He has started well as Test captain, both in terms of form and results, but giving him ODI captaincy so soon feels rushed. It would have been wiser to let him grow into the role gradually rather than burdening him with too much too soon.

2. Multi-format captaincy could make workload management harder

As India’s all-format leader and a key top-order batter, Shubman Gill will find it tough to get any rest. With crucial games in every format leading up to major ICC tournaments, there’s hardly a match where his presence won’t be needed.

Players like Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, or Arshdeep Singh also play multiple formats, but they often get rest due to rotation or workload management. Gill, being both captain and premier batter, may not have that luxury.

If India push too hard to maximize his form as both batter and captain, it could lead to burnout or injuries. Considering the packed international schedule followed by the IPL, managing Gill’s workload carefully is essential — and all-format captaincy could make that nearly impossible.

3. India might have acted too soon

During the squad announcement, Ajit Agarkar mentioned that Shubman Gill would be given time to settle into the ODI captaincy before the 2027 World Cup. However, with over two years still left and around 27 ODIs to be played until the end of 2026, India had ample time to make the transition more gradual.

The decision to hand Gill the role now feels premature. He is already adjusting to Test and T20I leadership, and the selectors could have waited until he was more comfortable in those roles. While giving him time before a World Cup makes sense, doing it this early may be unnecessary.

In short, India may have pulled the trigger too soon — and the pressure could end up affecting both Gill’s form and his development as a long-term leader.

Shubman Gill, who is playing for India in the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE, had a great Test tour of England. After Rohit Sharma retired from Tests, the 26-year-old was named captain. He scored 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40, including four centuries. With this excellent performance, he also proved the critics wrong.

Gill started the series with a brilliant 147 in the first Test at Leeds. He then scored 269 in Birmingham and 261 in the second innings of the same Test. In the fourth Test at Manchester, the right-handed batter made 103 as India drew the match.

Gill has played 37 Test matches so far. Before India’s next red-ball series against West Indies, we compare his stats with head coach Gautam Gambhir at the same stage.

Shubman Gill vs Gautam Gambhir – How They Compare After 37 Tests

Shubman Gill, currently representing India in the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE, has already made a mark in Test cricket. With 37 Test matches under his belt, he has shown consistency and the ability to score big runs, especially in England. As India gears up for its next series, it is interesting to compare Gill’s record with that of former India opener Gautam Gambhir at the same stage of his career.

Runs and Batting Average

In 37 Tests, Shubman Gill has scored 2,647 runs at an average of 41.35. Of these, 1,346 runs came in 15 matches against England, where he averaged 51.76. Against Australia, he scored 537 runs in nine Tests at 35.80, 324 runs in five matches against New Zealand at 32.40, and 321 runs in four games against Bangladesh at an average of 45.85.

Gautam Gambhir, after 37 Tests, had scored 3,077 runs at a much higher average of 50.44. He made 648 runs in nine matches against Sri Lanka at 40.50, 612 runs in six Tests against New Zealand at 68, 492 runs in five matches against Australia at 49.20, and 361 runs in two Tests against England at an outstanding average of 90.25.

Centuries and Half-Centuries

Shubman Gill has struck nine hundreds and seven fifties in his first 37 Tests. Six of his centuries came against England, including four during the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He has also scored two hundreds against Bangladesh and one against Australia.

Gautam Gambhir also had nine centuries but more fifties – 14 in total. His best score of 206 came against Australia in Delhi in October 2008. Of his nine hundreds, two came each against Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka, with one against England.

Record in SENA Nations

Gill has played 16 Tests in SENA nations (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia). In these matches, he scored 1,268 runs at an average of 42.26, including four centuries and two fifties. He averages 52.62 in eight Tests in England and 35.20 in six matches in Australia. In two Tests in South Africa, his average drops to 18.50. He has not played in New Zealand yet.

Gautam Gambhir, at the same stage, had played only four Tests in SENA nations. In eight innings, he scored 530 runs at an average of 75.71, with two hundreds and two fifties. He averaged 89 in six innings in New Zealand and 42.50 in one Test in South Africa. Gambhir had not played Tests in England or Australia at this point.

Performance in Winning Matches

Shubman Gill has featured in 18 matches that India won. In 33 innings, he scored 1,573 runs at an average of 54.24, including six centuries and three fifties. In 13 Tests India lost, he scored 657 runs at 25.26, with one century in a loss and two in drawn matches.

In contrast, Gautam Gambhir played in 19 wins out of his first 37 Tests. In 32 innings, he scored 1,429 runs at 49.27, with four hundreds and eight fifties. In six losses, he averaged 29.66. Five of his nine centuries came in drawn games.

Conclusion

While Gautam Gambhir has slightly better numbers in runs, average, and fifties after 37 Tests, Shubman Gill has shown tremendous potential, especially in SENA nations and in wins. At just 26, Gill’s consistency, big scores in England, and ability to perform in winning causes suggest he could match or surpass Gambhir’s record as his career progresses.

The former England captain, Joe Root, has drawn a bold comparison between modern-day great players and the current red-ball captain of the Blue Brigade, Shubman Gill, following the latter’s successful stint with the bat, where he amassed over 750 runs in five Tests in the United Kingdom against England.

Shubman Gill also led the side incredibly, ending with a 2-2 series margin, including the famous victory during the fifth and final game at the Kennington Oval. Root compares Gill with some of the greatest modern-day players of the game and expects the Punjab-born to reach that level.

“I think Kane is a wonderful player. I think Steve has been incredible, especially against us. Virat Kohli and Rohit are the same. Shubman Gill, I think, is going to be a very good player across the formats. Harry Brook is another whom I am watching from the other end, and he makes my life so much easier with the pressure he puts on the bowlers.” Root expressed during a recent interaction on Stick To Cricket.

Watch: Joe Root compares Harry Brook with Kevin Pietersen’s aura

Harry Brook is another upcoming superstar for the England side, and Root has compared him with Kevin Pietersen’s aura and demeanor. He reckoned that Brook’s aggressive style of batting could pay the opposition team many ways, where they would mostly look to stop the runs rather than getting him out.

“Harry is pretty similar to KP. When KP used to be at the crease, his aura, demeanor, and presence were intimidating, whereas with Harry, you just don’t know where he could hit the ball. As a bowler, you would think that I would bowl top of the off-stump, and it actually could either go over fine-leg or go over mid-off for a six.”

“You are batting at the other end, thinking it’s Christmas. So many people are trying to control the rate, and in many ways, you try to stop the runs, and when people do that to you mentally as a batting group, it makes life so easier. Then there is no threat from the opposition.”

Leading the Indian team in the five-match Test series in England, Shubman Gill performed superbly and proved his critics wrong. Not many experts thought India could do well in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. India went to England with a young side. Even though Gill was named captain, he had yet to prove his batting skills overseas.

The Indian captain had a memorable tour as both a batter and a leader. In 10 innings across five Tests, he scored 754 runs at an average of 75.40. The 25-year-old made four centuries, including his career-best 269 in Birmingham. He started the tour with 147 in Leeds and also scored a determined 103 under pressure in the Manchester Test.

Gill is often referred to as the heir to Virat Kohli in the Indian team. The two are often called the 'prince' and the 'king'. Kohli has played 37 Tests so far. After his batting performance in England, we compare Gill’s stats with Kohli at the same stage.

Indian team is prepping up for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 scheduled to commence in September. The squad for the same is slated to be unveiled in less than a week’s time. While there are speculations going around as to whom should be included in the squad, the surprising question about who should be the captain of the side is also in the list of speculations.

India’s current T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav has done well in leading the team in T20Is and some fans are popping Shubman Gill’s name to be the next T20I captain. The suggestions come as Gill, leading India in Tests managed to level the five match series against England by 2-2. And some cricketing fans want Gill to continue as the captain of T20 side too.

It is worth noting that, in around 23 matches Suryakumar Yadav has led the side, he has managed to win around 20 games for India making his winning percentage hover around 80. On the other hand, Gill has not featured in the T20 squad since July 2024. It would be a fair way for Board of Control for Cricket in India to stick with Suryakumar Yadav as the batter has delivered results for the team through his captaincy.

The Day 5 of the Oval Test was filled with intense drama as at one stage India needed just one wickets and England needed less than 10 runs. The plot became even more thrilling as one of the batter, Chris Woakes entered the field with injured shoulder and was taking runs with one hand wrapped under his sweater.

Indians were eager to finish things off early but Woakes and Gus Atkinson were adamant in taking single on the final ball of the over to keep Woakes away from strike. Before the end of the Atkinson, the final ball of Mohammed Siraj’s penultimate over, provided an opportunity of potential run out. Mohammed Siraj discussed the tactic they indulged to gwt Woakes on the strike and get him out.

“That wide yorker was our (Siraj and Gill’s) plan. It was the last ball of the over, and we knew they won’t want to get Woakes on strike. So he said that we can bowl a wide yorker because there was a chance of a run-out too. They wouldn’t have been able to hit it for a six, and we wanted a dot ball,” Siraj said as quoted by News18.

Siraj had told me to ask Jurel to remove his gloves : Gill

The game would have concluded in the Siraj’s penultimate over, if and only wicketkeeper had thrown the ball onto the stumps. But Woakes was quick to run towards the other end unscathed. After the game Shubman Gill provided insight into what traversed on the field.

“He had told me to ask Dhruv Jurel to remove his gloves for the run-out," Gill said. “Jab tak maine Dhruv ko bola ye bhagne lag gaya aur usko time ni mila. Toh usne miss kardi and isne mujhe bola, ‘Tuune bola kyu nahi?’ (Till the time I could go and tell Dhruv, Siraj had already started running for the ball. So he missed the run-out, and he came asking me why I didn’t tell Dhruv!),” Gill added.

On his way to this rare feat, he has broken several records and with one innings to go in the series, there are some records he might as well break before boarding the India flight.

Records Shubman Gill can break in Oval Test:

Breaking Graham Gooch’s record

If Shubman Gill scores 10 more runs in the Oval Test, he will break former England cricketer, Graham Gooch’s record for most runs in a Test series played between India and England. Gooch has scored 752 runs in three match Test series in 1990.

800 runs in a Test series

If Gill scores 57 or more runs in the second innings of the Oval Test, he will become the first batsman from Asia to score 800 or more runs in a Test series. No other batter from Asia has achieved this milestone yet.

Breaking Don Bradman's record

Gill needs 68 more runs to break Don Bradman's record for most runs in a Test series as a captain. Bradman had scored 810 runs against Australia in thr 1936-37 Ashes series as a captain.

Thanks to captain Shubman Gill and KL Rahul’s unbeaten partnership of 174 runs for the third wicket after losing both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan in the opening over against Chris Woakes at Old Trafford in Manchester. At one point, it felt like the game would finish by the end of the day, but both showed resilience.

The former Indian batting coach, Sanjay Bangar, has expressed that both the right-handed batters had displayed excellent character during difficult conditions when the ball seamed and swung in cloudy conditions, as Ben Stokes tried various plans to break the stand.

‘Even coming into the England conditions, the opening partnership has worked brilliantly, along with the top order, is for the contribution of KL Rahul, who plays the new ball. Shubman Gill also did that because they lost two wickets in the opening over. He played the early overs beautifully when the ball was swinging much, and there was uneven bounce.Bangar expressed during a recent interaction on Star Sports.
