In the Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 game at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka played against Bangladesh. Sri Lanka put up 168/7 on the board. Dasun Shanaka made a fine and quick 64 off 37 balls. But Bangladesh went after the target without breaking a sweat and they reached 169/6 in 19.5 overs. The collapse of the Lankans’ middle order and the lack of rhythm in bowling encouraged the Bangladeshi batsmen to dominate the game and thus, they handed a four-wicket loss to the Sri Lankan team. Below are the main reasons for Sri Lanka defeat:

1. Middle-Order Collapse

After a positive start by openers Pathum Nissanka (22) and Kusal Mendis (34), Sri Lanka quickly lost wickets in the middle overs. Sri Lanka reached 55/1 after the powerplay, then 98/4 with six overs remaining. The collapse ensured Sri Lanka was not able to build a stronger total despite an impressive innings by Dasun Shanaka.

2. Bangladesh's Solid Chase

The top order of Bangladesh, Saif Hassan (61/45) and Towhid Hridoy (58/37), were the main factors that made the innings a failure for the opponents, as they both scored half-centuries. The steady partnership and timely aggression helped Bangladesh to get 169/6 in 19.5 overs, which means a comfortable win.

3. Effective bowling by Bangladesh

The Bangladeshi bowlers took advantage of the slow Dubai pitch conditions. Mustafizur Rahman was brilliant, taking 3 wickets for 20 runs in his 4 overs, especially in the death overs. Mahedi Hasan also provided support with 2 wickets for 25 runs. The key wickets and tight bowling bundled Sri Lanka's scoring.

Bangladesh got their revenge against Sri Lanka (BAN vs SL) in the Super Four of Asia Cup 2025 on September 20, 2025. The Tiger brigade successfully chased down the target of 169 runs in their 20-over limit. Saif Hassan emerged as one of the main protagonists behind the Bangladesh cricket team's thrilling win over their archrival. His stellar performance from the beginning of the run chase offered Bangladesh the slight edge they needed to win the match. During the second innings, Hassan sent a delivery from Nuwan Thushara into the stand using the wrists.

Batting first, Sri Lanka, who defeated Bangladesh in the group stage of the tournament, registered a competitive total of 168 on the scoreboard. Sri Lanka started the second innings by quickly taking the wicket of Tanzid Hasan. Hasan departed with a duck. After sustaining early damage, Bangladesh bounced back with the help of the partnership between Saif Hassan (61) and skipper Litton Das (23). They pulled out their team from the early setback. Later, Towhid Hridoy, who scored 58 off 37, joined Hasan and took Bangladesh closer to the target.

Sri Lanka lost the match, but their bowlers tried well. The match stretched up to the very last over of the innings. Dushmantha Chameera intensified the match by clinching the wicket of Hridoy. Bangladesh had to hold their nerves to collect the last 10 runs to close the match. On the fifth delivery of the 20th over, they claimed the winning run.

Saif Hassan dispatched Nuwan Thushara for a six:

Hassan played a match-winning 61-run against 45 balls. During this time, he smashed a couple of 4s and four 6s. One of the 6s he hit was against Sri Lankan sling pacer Thushara. Thushara delivered a full-length delivery on the pads of the right-handed opener of Bangladesh.

The on-song batter, who was on the line of the delivery, just used his wrists to flick the ball over the long-on for a huge over boundary. It was the batter's technique and balance that turned the decent ball into a maximum.

Tanzid Hasan was dismissed in the very first over of the second innings during the Asia Cup 2025 Super Four clash between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday, September 20. The in-form Nuwan Thushara sent the Bangladesh opener back to the pavilion for a two-ball duck.

Sri Lanka batted first after Litton Das won the toss and chose to field. Dasun Shanaka played a sensational innings, scoring 64 off just 37 balls with three fours and six sixes. There were also some valuable contributions from Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, and Charith Asalanka to help the Sri Lanka Lions post a score of 168/7 in their 20 overs.

In response, Sri Lanka would have hoped for a strong start with the ball. Thushara, who had dismissed Tanzid for a six-ball duck in the first over of their previous Group B meeting, struck again, sending the southpaw back early.

Thushara’s Clever Bowling

While Thushara had previously bowled Tanzid with an in-swinger, he employed a well-disguised slower delivery this time to catch the 24-year-old off-guard. Tanzid advanced down the track in search of a boundary but failed to pick the off-cutter, allowing the ball to pass his bat and crash into the top of the off-stump.

Currently, Bangladesh are on 159/4 in 18.4 overs and need only 6 runs from the last 8 balls to chase down Sri Lanka’s total. This narrow finish has created a fantastic end to the Super Four match, with every ball now being the most important.

This early breakthrough by Thushara put Bangladesh on the back foot right from the start, giving Sri Lanka a significant psychological advantage in the Super Four encounter.

Sri Lanka batter Dasun Shanaka hit Shoriful Islam for a huge six. The ball traveled a mile and landed on the top part of the gallery of Dubai International Stadium. A much-needed over-boundary for Sri Lanka (SL vs BAN).

After an encounter in the group stage of the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh locked horns in the first match of the Super 4s of the tournament. Accumulating the stats from the last few encounters between these two teams, today's (September 20, 2025) match is nicely poised for an entertaining encounter.

Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bowl first, asserting the wicket could behave more in favor of the batter in the second half of the match. Though, the Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka was not too unhappy to lose the toss, as he mentioned he was not happy losing the toss and batting first. He was hoping for positives from the track batting first. But, in reality, Sri Lanka, the first side to bat, was struggling to gain a high run rate.

Dasun Shanaka launched the ball into the orbit for a giant 6

After the first 10 overs of the first innings, when Sri Lanka's run rate was around 7 and they were struggling to find big hits, Dasun Shanaka hit a mammoth six to allow some oxygen for the team. Before reaching the individual 50-run mark, that six was the evidence of his form against Bangladesh.

During the second ball of the 13th over, Bangladesh bowler Shoriful Islam was up against Shanaka. For that delivery, the bowler tried to put the ball on the line of the stumps but went slightly towards the off. Shanaka picked up the opportunity to gain the maximum result. The batter stood tall and delivered it over the deep square leg for an over boundary.

<![CDATA[Asia Cup 2025: Is Dunith Wellalage playing today in SL vs BAN Super 4 match?]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/asia-cup-2025-is-dunith-wellalage-playing-today-in-sl-vs-ban-super-4-match/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/asia-cup-2025-is-dunith-wellalage-playing-today-in-sl-vs-ban-super-4-match/ Sat, 20 Sep 2025 20:33:44 GMT

Just two days ago, Sri Lankan cricketer Dunith Wellalage got the tragic news after the end of the group stage match in the Asia Cup 2025 against Afghanistan. While he returned to the team on Saturday morning (September 20), is he playing the match against Bangladesh in the Super Fours of the Asia Cup 2025 on Saturday evening?

Dunith Wellalage returned home to pay his last respects to his late father

After Sri Lanka beat Afghanistan by six wickets with eight balls remaining in the last Group B match in the Asia Cup 2025 to secure their place for the Super Fours, youngster Dunith Wellalage learnt that his father had passed away due to a cardiac arrest. Dunith returned to his home, and it was initially expected that he wouldn't return for the Asia Cup.

However, last Friday night, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed that Dunith would join the team on Saturday morning, and he would be available for selection for the match against Bangladesh in the Super Fours of the tournament. But the question was still on, as it was about to be practical.

Dunith Wellalage is in Sri Lankan playing XI

Ultimately, at the toss, while Bangladesh chose to field first, Sri Lanka announced the unchanged squad. It means that Dunith is playing the match against Bangladesh, which is surely a big courage for the youngster. Sri Lankan cricketers are also wearing the black armband as a sign of respect.

It is the second match for Dunith in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, who has recorded seven wickets in five T20Is. In the match against Afghanistan, the left-arm spinner had the bowling figures of 4-0-49-1. Although he bowled well in his first three overs, his bowling figures were damaged due to conceding 32 runs in the final over of the innings, where Mohammad Nabi smashed five sixes in consecutive legal deliveries.

Sri Lanka proved their mettle in the group stage of the Asia Cup 2025 by defeating their archrival Bangladesh (SL vs BAN Asia Cup 2025). Before the tournament, Bangladesh proved to be the better team than Sri Lanka by clinching a T20I series. In today's (September 20, 2025) game of the Super Four, both of the sides will play for their pride. In this stage of the tournament, the Net Run Rate of each team can play a vital role in confirming the top two teams. So far, in the contest, the island nation looked more confident than the Tiger brigade. Bangladesh qualified for the best of four teams by defeating Hong Kong and Afghanistan. Sri Lanka got their ticket for Super Four by defeating Afghanistan.

Toss Update:

Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bowl first. They made a couple of changes in their playing XI.

Litton Das, the Bangladesh captain, said that they are not sure about the character of the surface. They took a gamble on the odds. The wicket in Dubai, in the past, helped the team batting second.

SL vs BAN Super-4, Match 1 Expert Opinion and Match Prediction:

Sri Lanka is in good form, having won three matches in a row. Sri Lankan top-order batsmen are in red-hot form. Pathum Nissanka smashed 2 half-centuries in 3 games, and Kusal Mendis was awarded player of the match in the previous game. Additionally, they have experienced spin attacks.

On the other hand, Bangladesh lack consistency, especially from their batting unit. If they manage to post a good total on the board, we can expect a nail-biting contest. In our opinion, Sri Lanka is ahead in this contest

Wanindu Hasaranga could have easily added another wicket to his tally if the bail response had been its usual way. The ball hit the stumps, but the bail remained still as a rock. The blinking red light in the wicket was the signal that the ball hit it properly, with enough force. But it was Hasaranga's misfortune and Jaker Ali's fine luck.

Sri Lanka started off their Asia Cup 2025 campaign with a solid win against Bangladesh. Bangladesh, who began their campaign with a controlled win over Hong Kong, China, found themselves in deep trouble within the very first two overs of the match, as Sri Lankan pacers produced back-to-back two-maiden-wicket overs. After 2 overs of the first innings, Bangladesh was 0 for 2. From there, they somehow got a total of 139 runs on their scorecard, thanks to Jaker Ali's talent and lucky innings.

In the total of 139 runs, Ali added 41 runs in 34 balls with only 2 boundaries. Interestingly, he remained not out after the lucky escape against Hasaranga. Ali and Shamim Hossain (42) stitched an 86 off 61 partnership together to deliver their team a respectable total. Though that was not enough to prevent Sri Lanka from registering their first win of the tournament.

Sri Lanka chased down the target in the 15th over of the second innings with 6 wickets in hand. Pathum Nissanka's stable 50-run knock off 34 balls provided Sri Lanka solidity in the beginning of their innings. Number three batter Kamil Mishara's unbeaten 46 ensured their win against the archrival.

Hasaranga in the match took a couple wickets in the match. During the second ball of the 10th over of the first innings, a movie ball from the spinner sneaked past between Ali's bat and pad and went straight to the wicket. The red lights in the stumps started to blink, and Hasaranga was about to begin the celebration. But then he suddenly realized that the bails did not go down. Ali was then batting on only 5 runs and ended with an unbeaten 41. Though, the Bangladesh cricket team was not as lucky as Ali.
