The International Cricket Council (ICC) has come up with an update on the return of South Africa and the West Indies to their homes after the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.

South Africa and West Indies players were stuck in India

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 ended on March 8, which India and Sri Lanka jointly hosted, while India hosted all the knockouts of the tournament. West Indies were eliminated from the Super Eights, while South Africa lost the Semi-final against New Zealand. Both ended their tournament journeys in India but couldn't return home due to the ongoing military conflict in West Asia.

Meanwhile, England, who lost to the hosts India in the second Semi-final, have returned to their home on time. Even South Africa and the West Indies have reportedly blamed the ICC for giving preference to the English team over them. However, the ICC has denied the allegation, as the global governing body has made the decisions after assuring safety, feasibility, and welfare.

Final travelling parties have safely departed for home

Now, we have got an update. According to the report, the final travelling parties of South Africa and the West Indies have safely departed for home. Earlier this week, nine Caribbean players left for their homes. The ICC has also confirmed that the complex travel strategy was done to ensure their safe travel amid an unrest situation.

Amid tensions in West Asia, India is preparing to begin the IPL 2026, which has been scheduled to start on March 28. Top foreign players are ready to join their respective franchises before the beginning of the new IPL season.

<![CDATA[South Africa Whimper Away Without the Knockout Madness]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/south-africa-whimper-away-without-the-knockout-madness/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/south-africa-whimper-away-without-the-knockout-madness/ Sun, 08 Mar 2026 12:20:29 GMT

A Good South African Tournament often sees them go really well in the Main stages of the tournament. They dominate, look very much favorites, and do it all with very little superstars only for the Madness to unfold in the Knockouts. The Trend was slowly moving away. In 2024, they won the Semi-Finals, made the finals, were30 runs away from the Trophy with 30 balls to go and then madness unfolded. The knockout stories are a plenty for them but in this case it was not madness, it was a complete hiding.

Starting the tournament, South Africa had no obvious flaws and were a team of good role based cricketers. They did lose starters Donovan Ferreira and Tony De Zorzi to start but Tristin Stubbs and Ryan Rickleton more than made up for the two missing players. In Lungi Ngidi South Africa had a pacer with an Arsenal of slower balls and Marco Jansen was there with the pace and bounce to complement Kagiso Rabada’s explosiveness. It was a well-rounded bowling attack.

The batting line-up had experience with Quinton De Kock back, Aiden Markram and David Miller doing well, and youth in the likes of Dewald Brevis. Coming into the tournament South Africa had a thriller of a game with Afghanistan, using two super overs to win coming some early tournament nerves. The dominance started in the group stages and went on to the Super Eights when they trounced the favorites, India.

The stage was set. A semi-final with New Zealand. The ones who gave the heartbreak of 2015 in a final over finish. The ones who also gave a heartbreak in the 2011 Quarter Finals were madness saw South Africa fail to chase 221 in an ODI. The two sides were semi-finalists in the most recent ICC Event as well facing off in the Champions Trophy. New Zealand, a side South Africa just can not seem to crack past.

New Zealand to there respect did their homework. A relatively new bowler in 34 year old Cole McConchie, it was his off spin that did the trick. Off-spin downing the two top order lefties in Ryan Rickleton and Quinton De Kock. Tight lines from there and the innings did not seem to recover until brilliance from Jansen and Stubbs took them to a fighting 168. A semi-final chase, a few wickets and the nerves begin. Tim Seifert and Finn Allen though to cue from Brendon McCullum back in 2015 and took the game on. They killed the chase with an 80 run powerplay and no recovery could be made. There was no fightback, no madness, just sheer dominance and professionalism from the New Zealand camp.

Knockout baggage, something that fails to leave South Africa, has struck again in a different way this time. The WTC win should have marked an end to their ICC tournament struggles, but that could well be a one-off as they still look for a World Cup win. They have a home World Cup next year and a good chunk of the current squad is expected to feature there too. The tournament here though, was theirs for the taking. Beating the hosts, playing multiple games where the Finals was to be hosted, the Semi-Finals was just a step in the way to glory.

Incidentally, the dominance shown by New Zealand left no room for tears. The same group was left in shambles after a thrilling Semi-Final against Australia in Kolkata three years ago. This time, there was room for none of that as the trouncing was evident. Kolkata has now witnessed two South African knockout defeats and South Africa whimper away hoping the next one will be theirs.

Ahead of the India vs England (IND vs ENG) semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Yousaf, through his ‘X’ post, suggests the International Cricket Council (ICC) change rules from the next editions of the T20 World Cups.

Mohammad Yousaf observes that the level between the finalists and the other participating teams is massive. To make the title race more competitive, the former Pakistan cricketer asks the ICC to change the format of the tournament.

The former Pakistan batter explains that to take the competition to a higher level, the council should consider two different stages. For the initial stage, it can be between the associate teams and previous non-qualifiers. For the next stage, some of the best-performing teams from the first stage will join the next stage, where they will meet the top six teams for the main event.

“The level and skill gap between teams that reach the finals and the rest has become huge. To make #T20WorldCups more competitive, we may soon need two separate stages. One where associate teams compete with previous non-qualifiers, before the top six teams join the main event #icc”, Mohammad Yousaf’s suggestion for the ICC.

In the same ‘X” post, he predicted the two finalists of the ongoing T20 World Cup. According to Yousaf, Team India and South Africa can be the two teams to square off in the summit clash.

Former Pakistan cricketer asks ICC to change rules in the T20 World Cup

“Feels like another #SAvsInd final is on the verge, hard work pays off”, he further added.

Before qualifying for the Finale, the Suryakumar Yadav-led team will have cross the English hurdle. On March 5, Team India will be up against England in Mumbai in the semi-finals. And South Africa will face New Zealand on March 4.

<![CDATA[T20 World Cup 2026: Was Jasprit Bumrah underused in India’s defeat to South Africa?]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/t20-world-cup-2026-was-jasprit-bumrah-underused-in-india-s-defeat-to-south-africa/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/t20-world-cup-2026-was-jasprit-bumrah-underused-in-india-s-defeat-to-south-africa/ Fri, 27 Feb 2026 16:19:13 GMT

India’s Super 8 clash against South Africa exposed tactical concerns that extended beyond their batting collapse. Jasprit Bumrah was outstanding in claiming 3 wickets for 15 runs and removing several important batsmen while continuing to exert pressure over the batting team. However, despite Bumrah's best efforts, South Africa were still able to score a total of 187 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. The middle period of play was instrumental in South Africa dominating India's spin bowling attack and changing the momentum of the game. Even after taking 3 wickets with the new ball, India were unable to assert themselves and were subsequently out of control during the scoring explosion that would determine the fate of this match.

Questions were raised regarding the distribution of Bumrah's overs throughout the innings after he bowled two overs at the beginning of the innings and was held back for some time before bowling again late in the innings. Many commentators believe that this hold up period allowed South Africa to settle into their innings and establish partnerships with one another. If Bumrah had been utilized correctly in the middle overs he may have been successful in breaking up multiple partnerships of the batting team, subsequently disrupting their rhythm and preventing the rapid scoring that occurred thereafter.

The timing of Bumrah's bowling spells has been talked about recently. The usual approach is to save him for the death overs; however, because of the current state of play, India needed to show some flexibility. South Africa's attacking middle order used this quieter spell to score additional runs and put India onto the back foot during a time they were struggling for control. Despite Bumrah's outstanding bowling figures, delaying his return to bowl may have cost India the opportunity of regaining the initiative in a game that had already slipped away from them.

Could India have used Jasprit Bumrah differently?

Looking back, deploying Bumrah to the middle overs when the partnership was going well would likely have changed the game. His track record of taking wickets when the pressure is on could force South Africa into a more defensive mindset. While it may require shifting death-over responsibilities, it may have reduced their scoring rate and stopped or slowed the direction of the innings. Tactical flexibility in high-stakes contests often leads to decisive outcomes, and this scenario has heightened discussions about India’s bowling philosophy.

Ultimately, this discussion demonstrates the necessity of situational awareness in T20 cricket. Bumrah is India's most successful lightning-fast bowler, and has a long history of being the player who wins matches, but optimal utilisation is critical in tight situations. As qualification scenarios tighten, India must not rely solely on rigid planning. Decisions made in upcoming matches will increasingly require proactive decision-making, and bold uses of the ball, to ensure that India's strongest weapon will be employed at the most critical junctures.

<![CDATA[Sunil Gavaskar snubs India, names top two contenders to win T20 World Cup 2026]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/sunil-gavaskar-snubs-india-names-top-two-contenders-to-win-t20-world-cup-2026/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/sunil-gavaskar-snubs-india-names-top-two-contenders-to-win-t20-world-cup-2026/ Fri, 27 Feb 2026 12:30:30 GMT

Thursday (February 26) was a good day for India in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. South Africa defeated the West Indies by nine wickets, alleviating concerns about India's net run rate. India then defeated Zimbabwe by 72 runs to maintain its position in the semi-final race. Now, India will have to defeat the West Indies to secure a place in the semi-finals. The match between these two teams is scheduled for March 1 at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata.

While all Indian fans and former cricketers are hopeful that Team India will once again win the T20 World Cup, Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has a different opinion. Gavaskar doesn't point to India, but rather to two other teams that have already qualified for the semifinals.

See Also: Watch: Heartbreaking news!! Star India player's father passes away during T20 World Cup 2026

Sunil Gavaskar has described South Africa, which has qualified for the semi-finals from Group X, and England, which has secured a place in the final four from Group Y, as strong title contenders. Under Aiden Markram’s captaincy, the Proteas remain unbeaten in the tournament, having defeated India by 76 runs and the West Indies by 9 wickets in the Super 8. England, after losing one group stage match, rebounded with a 51-run win over Sri Lanka and a 2-wicket victory against Pakistan in the Super 8.

Sunil Gavaskar picks England and South Africa as favourites

During a discussion on India Today, Sunil Gavaskar picked England and South Africa as the two favorites to win the T20 World Cup. Gavaskar also said that England may have lost some wickets quickly in the middle against Pakistan, but that it's not a cause for concern.

The Indian legend praised the English team, saying:

"For me, the two favorites are South Africa and England. England might have had a close victory, but that again is down to the modern tendency to try and finish the game off with a six. Otherwise, the England win would have been a very, very easy win against Pakistan."

"England, because they've got the bowlers who can bowl spin as well as quick. They've got a very good bowling attack and the batting also, they've got a fair bit of depth over there. So I think England and South Africa are the two teams to watch out for," he added.

England and South Africa still have one match each remaining in the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2026. England will face New Zealand on 27 February, while South Africa will take on Zimbabwe on 1 March.

Pakistan legend urges ICC probe into WI vs SA T20 World Cup 2026 clash]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/match-fixing-allegation-pakistan-legend-urges-icc-probe-into-wi-vs-sa-t20-world-cup-2026-clash/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/match-fixing-allegation-pakistan-legend-urges-icc-probe-into-wi-vs-sa-t20-world-cup-2026-clash/ Thu, 26 Feb 2026 19:30:32 GMT

Was the Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2026 between West Indies and South Africa (WI vs SA) fixed? Pakistan legend Saqlain Mushtaq raised concerns over match number 47 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Mushtaq claimed that the Caribbean might have deliberately lost the match.

Again South Africa, West Indies' batting line-up was troubled by a sudden batting collapse. South African pacers- Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch- were all over the West Indian batting order during the initial stage of the first innings.

Within the 12th over of the first innings, West Indies lost their 7 batters for only 87 runs. Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd finally did the much-needed rescue job. Holder missed a half-century by only one run, and Shepherd remained not out for 52 off 37. Because of these two batters, the former champions of the T20 World Cup posted 176-8 in 20 overs.

The batting collapse of the West Indies came as a shocker as they scored over 250 runs against Zimbabwe in their previous Super 8 match. A part of cricket fans and experts might have expected the same fireworks from their blades, instead, it was mostly misfired by the attacking batters of the West Indies. South Africa won the match by 9 wickets, and 23 balls to spare.

After the one-sided match, Pakistan legend Shaqlain Mushtaq requested the International Cricket Council to take a look at the match. He claimed that money might have involved in the clash, as multiple West Indies cricketers are linked with several IPL teams.

Former Pakistan cricketer casts concern over WI vs SA Super 8 match, T20 World Cup 2026

"This pitch was flat, and despite that, the West Indies delivered an extremely poor batting performance. Several West Indies batsmen got out playing reckless shots, which is unusual because wickets were falling continuously from the other end. Their players receive expensive contracts in the IPL, and the West Indies Cricket Board may benefit financially in some way, perhaps this match was designed in a certain manner", Shaqlain Mushtaq raised the concern.

"How a team like West Indies could perform so badly on such a surface even though there was a visible lack of effort in their bowling performance", he added

South Africa has created a stir by defeating India by 76 runs. The massive defeat put India's chances for the semi-finals in the T20 World Cup 2026 in uncertainty. Not only by points, but India's chances to play the semi-finals are also wavering because of the low net run rate.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has a solution to dismiss them from the title race. Afridi asks South Africa to lose deliberately against the West Indies in their next fixture of the Super 8. During a conversation, the former cricketer said that South Africa should allow the West Indies to win against them on February 26.

In Group 1, South Africa and the West Indies got massive wins in their respective matches. The Proteas outplayed India, while the Caribbeans thrashed Zimbabwe by a long margin. After these two matches, West Indies is currently on top of the points table of Group 1 with 2 points and +5.350, with the same points, South Africa is in the second spot with a net run rate of +3.800. India (net run rate -3.800) and Zimbabwe (net run rate -5.350) are in third and fourth places respectively.

Why did Shahid ask South Africa to lose vs West Indies?

If India manages to win against Zimbabwe and the West Indies, then they will be back in the title race again. If the top three teams of the group secured 4 points each, then the net run rate will decide the two semifinalists. India can be in serious trouble if the net run rates are considered, as currently, they have a negative run rate. Keeping this equation in mind, Shahid Afridi advises South Africa to lose against the West Indies deliberately. Eliminating India, South Africa can easily win the trophy, feels Afridi.

"If South Africa wants to win the World Cup, their best chance is to deliberately lose against the West Indies and knock India out of the tournament, because India is the only obstacle in their path. The moment India is eliminated, South Africa’s road to the World Cup becomes completely clear, and they can go on to win the World Cup easily", Shahid Afridi said.
