Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) had a tough and inconsistent season in IPL 2025. The team eventually finished seventh with six wins and eight losses in 14 matches. Long before the season started, LSG created huge noise by buying Rishabh Pant for INR 27 crore, which is the highest amount paid for any player in an IPL auction. Many fans expected LSG to have a great season, but the team could not perform consistently.

LSG started the 2025 season with a strong squad that included Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran, Mitchell Marsh and some youth in Ayush Badoni and Digvesh Rathi. While some players did well, there were just too many setbacks for the team. Rishabh Pant had a hit-or-miss type of season consistently, so he could not ever really provide match-winning innings. Their pace attack let the team down with a lack of consistency, leading to defeats and preventing LSG from gaining any type of momentum.

Before the start of IPL 2026, important changes were made in the trade window by LSG. They brought in experienced fast bowler Mohammed Shami from Sunrisers Hyderabad. His presence will make their bowling attack stronger along with Avesh Khan, Prince Yadav, Akash Singh and spinner Ravi Bishnoi. LSG also traded Shardul Thakur to the Mumbai Indians and received Arjun Tendulkar in return. Arjun adds a young left-arm fast bowling option to the squad.

LSG Retentions, Releases and Trades for IPL 2026

LSG decided to keep most of their important players for IPL 2026, such as Rishabh Pant, Nicholas Pooran, Aiden Markram, Ayush Badoni and Avesh Khan. They also retained several all-rounders and bowlers for balance in the squad. Simultaneously, LSG let go of the experienced players David Miller and Ravi Bishnoi to make room for new signings at the mini-auction.

With these changes and important trades already done, LSG now go into the IPL 2026 mini-auction with a purse of ₹22.95 crore. They are expected to strengthen their middle order and add more backup bowlers during the auction.

The Gujarat Titans (GT), champions of IPL 2022, had a strong season in IPL 2025, finishing in fourth place. Their group-stage run was one of the most consistent of the tournament, mainly because of the brilliant performances of their top-order batters, who dominated bowling attacks across different venues. Their strong starts with the bat have played a crucial role in GT securing a playoff spot for the third time in four years.

Sai Sudharsan, captain Shubman Gill and England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler all scored more than 500 runs each in the season. This made them one of the best top threes in the tournament. However, since they scored most of the runs, GT’s middle order didn’t get much time to bat, creating concerns about their depth in pressure situations. Because of this, GT are expected to target new middle-order batters in the mini-auction on December 16 in Abu Dhabi.

Over the years, Gujarat Titans became one of the most successful franchises in the IPL. After claiming the title in their maiden season in 2022 under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya, they were in the finals in 2023 and barely missed the playoffs in 2024. All ahead of the 2026 season, GT intend to retain their strong core players while also releasing players who haven't performed well to improve their good squad.

Gujarat Titans Retentions, Releases and Trades for IPL 2026

GT retained most of the key players ahead of IPL 2026, which included their skipper Shubman Gill, leading performers Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler, and match-winners like Rashid Khan, Mohammed Siraj, and Rahul Tewatia. They have also retained some other all-rounders and bowlers for maintaining team balance. Meanwhile, GT released some players who didn’t feature in their long-term plans.

The team also made one notable trade, sending West Indies batter Sherfane Rutherford to Mumbai Indians. With a remaining purse of ₹12.9 crore, Gujarat Titans will look to fill crucial middle-order and backup slots at the mini-auction and prepare a stronger lineup for IPL 2026.

<![CDATA[Farooqi, Naib, Janat dropped as Afghanistan name squads for Bangladesh series]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/farooqi-naib-janat-dropped-as-afghanistan-name-squads-for-bangladesh-series/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/farooqi-naib-janat-dropped-as-afghanistan-name-squads-for-bangladesh-series/ Sun, 21 Sep 2025 01:06:00 GMT

The Afghanistan national team has named their ODI and T20I squads for the white-ball tour against Bangladesh in the UAE, and a few players that have been included are new faces and there have been players that were omitted from the squad.

Among the players unreleased from the squad are left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi, and the allrounders Gulbadin Naib and Karim Janat. Farooqi has been replaced by Fyaz Ahmad, a tall left-arm seamer at 20 years of age and yet to play at the international level, regardless of having played 14 T20 matches with 12 wickets at a respectable economy rate of 9.06.

Another name added to the squad is the young top-order batter, nephew to the Afghanistan captain, Wafiullah Tarakhil, only available for the T20I squad. He had a strong run in the recent Shpageeza Cricket League, ending as the third highest run-scorer with 298 runs at an average of 37.25 and a strike rate of 155.20 over the course of nine innings.

Abdullah Ahmadzai has been added back into the T20I squad after being included as just a reserve in the Asia Cup and mystery spinner, AM Ghazanfar has been included in the ODI squad, with Rahmat Shah also among those listed as reserves for the T20I series, rather than the ODI series.

Rashid Khan's team relies on its spin depth and new players ahead of the Bangladesh white-ball series in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi

In regard to the squad refresh, ACB CEO Naseeb Khan said "this refresh is part of Afghanistan preparations towards the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup," and that the team has "a busy season ahead with many T20Is planned." He acknowledged the disappointment of being ousted from the Asia Cup, but is optimistic that AfghanAtalan will "bounce back strong."

Afghanistan's spin depth is a big asset. Even without Ghazanfar in the main T20I group, they have Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi available. They will have captain Hashmatullah Shahidi back to join Rashid, Nabi, Ghazanfar and Nangeyalia Kharote for the ODIs and in the conditions of Abu Dhabi, it could be effective to have Ghazanfar and Kharote available.

The tour begins with three T20Is in Sharjah on October 2, 3 and 5, then will follow with three ODIs in Abu Dhabi from October 8 to 14. This will complete the second part of a rescheduled all-format engagement between these two teams having Afghanistan won the ODI leg of the engagement in November 2024 by a score of 2-1.

Afghanistan suffered a narrow defeat against Bangladesh by eight runs in their last T20 International during the Asia Cup held in Abu Dhabi, and they will be keen to reverse that outcome this time.

Afghanistan T20I squad: Rashid Khan (capt), Ibrahim Zadran (vice-capt), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Mohamamad Ishaq (wk), Sediqullah Atal, Wafiullah Tarakhil, Darwish Rasooli, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Bashir Ahmad, Fareed Ahmad Malik, Abdullah Ahmadzai.

Reserves: AM Ghazanfar, Rahmat Shah.

Afghanistan ODI squad: Hashmatullah Shahidi (capt), Rahmat Shah (vice-capt), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Ikram Alikhil (wk), Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Darwish Rasooli, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Nangeyalia Kharote, AM Ghazanfar, Abdullah Ahmadzai, Bashir Ahmad, Mohammad Saleem Safi.

Reserves: Bilal Sami, Faridoon Dawoodzai.

In the Duleep Trophy 2025 Final, South Zone will face off against Central Zone, and both teams will be coming off emphatic wins in the semi-final of the tournament. As two of the tournament's in-form squads battle it out for the domestic title, it promises to be an exciting contest.

South Zone reached the final after a dominating performance over North Zone with a 197-run onslaught from Narayan Jagadeesan on a first-innings score of 536 for South. With further contributions from Devdutt Padikkal and Ricky Bhui and a consistent performance from Gurjapneet Singh, the combination of South Zone's depth in batting and bowling proved too much for North and South moved on comfortably.

Central Zone booked their place in the final with an all-round performance against West Zone. Saransh Jain took five wickets as they replied to 438 with a daunting 600 thanks to important knocks from Shubham Sharma (96) and Rajat Patidar (77) and support from the middle order. With Jagadeesan and Malewar at the top of the runs charts and Dubey and Singh at the top of the bowling charts, the Duleep Trophy final promises a thrilling contest where individual brilliance could determine the champion.

The second match of the Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2025 will see the North Delhi Strikers face the Central Delhi Kings at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The two sides had contrasting fortunes in the last season of the tournament and will be eyeing a winning start to their new campaigns. North Delhi Strikers reached the semifinals last time but were defeated by East Delhi Riders. Vaibhav Kandpal was the top scorer of the team with 314 runs, and Siddhartha Solanki was the highest wicket-taker with 13 wickets. However, their present squad looks very weak on paper, and no massive expectations are there for finishing in the playoffs.

Central Delhi Kings were placed fifth in the last edition and missed out on the qualification by a narrow margin. Dhruv Kaushik, who contributed 294 runs, was their top scorer, while Rajneesh Dadar took 11 wickets in the tournament. The Central Delhi Kings, with their more balanced line-up for DPL 2025, are being tipped as serious contenders for a spot in the knockouts.

The third match of the Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2025 is scheduled to take place between Outer Delhi Warriors and New Delhi Tigers at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Both of them are new teams in the tournament, having not played in the last edition. New squads, with not many experienced players and limited firepower, will not go a long way towards the expectations of the two camps that are looking to make a mark in their first DPL appearance.

Outer Delhi Warriors have their lineup, which is quite average and lacks depth, especially in the batting department, and thus they are seen as dark horses for the semifinal berth. New Delhi Tigers, also, do not have a very high-profile squad with many unknown players and few proven match-winners. Still, both sides will be racing to upset the schedule and embark on a winning streak in DPL 2025.
