Before the start of the opening clash of the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, the players showed a great spirit of solidarity as they wore black armbands to observe a minute’s silence to pay homage to the left-arm spinner of Sri Lanka, Dunith Wellalage’s father, Suranga.

The one-minute silence was observed before the national anthem to honor the former player, who passed away during Sri Lanka’s last group-stage clash against Afghanistan on September 18. Dunith Wellalage received incredible support from the cricket fraternity around the world during the difficult phase.

The spin all-rounder left the national camp after the end of the last game and attended his father’s funeral before rejoining the team on September 20. He has also been named in the playing eleven for the vital clash against Bangladesh. Wellalage has shown great courage and mental strength in this aspect in his short life.

SL vs BAN Super-4, Match 1 Expert Opinion and Match Prediction:

Sri Lanka is in good form, having won three matches in a row. Sri Lankan top-order batsmen are in red-hot form. Pathum Nissanka smashed 2 half-centuries in 3 games, and Kusal Mendis was awarded player of the match in the previous game. Additionally, they have experienced spin attacks.

On the other hand, Bangladesh lack consistency, especially from their batting unit. If they manage to post a good total on the board, we can expect a nail-biting contest. In our opinion, Sri Lanka is ahead in this contest

In modern days, the cricket council uses the zinc bails on the electric stumps. But there are several instances when these heavy bails don’t tend to come out of their groove despite being flashed hard by the ball of a spinner or sometimes even a pacer. Such an instance took place during the Men’s Asia Cup 2025 contest between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi.

It was the third delivery on the tenth over. Wanindu Hasaranga went for the googly as the ball pitched on the length and went with the spin into the right-handed batter, Jaker Ali, who had no idea of the movement of the delivery. He got a big stride forward for the defense as the ball sneaked through the gate to give him a lucky escape.

The ball, however, brushed the outside edge of the off-stump to get the lights on. But the bails didn’t come off, and as the rule suggests, the batter remained unbeaten for the ball. Sri Lanka couldn’t believe their luck. The bowler, wicket-keeper, and the captain had their hands on their head.

Watch: Wanindu Hasaranga’s ball fails to drop bails against Jaker Ali in Asia Cup 2025

It was a very poor start from Bangladesh, who got their first run on the board on the 14th ball of the evening. Both the opening batter, Tanzid Hasan, and Parvez Emon returned to the dressing room for their respective ducks. After the dismissal of Litton Das, for a moment, it appeared incredibly tough for them to cross the 100-run mark.

However, Jaker and Shamim Hossain posted an unbeaten 86-run stand for the sixth wicket in just more than 10 overs to shoulder them to 139/5 in their 20 allotted overs. Sri Lanka didn’t need to sweat much in the chase during the second innings.

Pathum Nissanka played a fantastic knock of 50 runs in 34 balls with the help of six boundaries and one six at a strike rate of 147.06, while Kami Mishra raced away to 40 runs in 26 balls, thanks to four boundaries and a pair of sixes at a strike rate of over 150.

Defending champions of the T20 Asia Cup, Sri Lanka, have got a dream start in the Asia Cup 2025, as Bangladesh's top-order batters have no answers against the Lankan pacers. Bangladesh lost their third wicket inside the powerplay, while Kamil Mishara stunned with a successful long-range throw that directly hit the wicket to dismiss Towhid Hridoy

Sri Lanka are the last team to start the eight-team Asia Cup 2025 journey, as they chose to field first after winning the toss against Bangladesh on Saturday (September 13) at Abu Dhabi. Bangladesh openers failed to open their accounts, as the Sri Lankan pacers started the tournament with a wicket maiden in the first two overs of the match.

At the end of the powerplay, Bangladesh were struggling at 30/3, as the last wicket was a brilliant run-out that stunned the cricket fans. Bangladesh skipper Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy were busy building up the innings after the opening batting collapse. While they were just trying to settle the innings by scoring hard runs, their 11-run partnership was broken in the fifth over.

Kamil Mishara's long-range throw resulted in Towhid Hridoy's stunning dismissal

It was the third ball of the fifth over, when Hridoy played a pull shot to the deep square leg on the short delivery of Nuwan Thushara, and they attempted for the third run after completing the first two runs. Kamil Mishara grabbed the ball from the deep square leg and threw to the bowling end, which hit the stumps while Hridoy was far away from the crease despite his desperate dive.

While the umpire went to the third umpire, it was no doubt for the Lankan players, and Hridoy knew his unlucky fate. The replay didn't take much time, as it was another wicket fall for the Tigers, as Hridoy was dismissed for only eight runs.

Bangladesh created history by winning the three-match away T20I series against the hosts Sri Lanka after thrashing them in the T20I series decider by a record margin.

At the 1-1 series level situation, Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka chose to bat first in the third and final game of the T20I series at Colombo (RPS) on Wednesday evening (July 16). While Sri Lanka scored 132/7 in 20 overs, the visitors chased down the target in 16.3 overs after losing only two wickets. With an eight-wicket win with 21 balls remaining, Bangladesh recorded their joint largest T20I win (by wickets) against Sri Lanka and also the largest T20I win (by balls remaining) against the same team

Bangladesh won their first T20I series against Sri Lanka

With this win, Bangladesh won this away T20I series by 2-1, which became their first bilateral T20I series win against Sri Lanka. Previously, the Tigers lost three T20I bilateral series and drew one T20I bilateral series against Sri Lanka (excluding one-off T20I).

Player of the Match Mahedi Hasan dominated with the ball

The hosts had an off start as they scored 40/3 in the powerplay. Apart from the opener Pathum Nissanka, the other four out of the first five Lankan batters failed to reach double-digit scores, as the hosts were struggling at 49/4. While Nissanka scored the highest runs in the innings with 46 off 39 balls with four fours, Kamindu Mendis and Dasun Shanaka were the others to reach double-digit scores in that innings. Mendis scored 21 runs, and Shanaka fought hard to score 35 not out off 25 balls with four fours and two sixes. In the last over of the innings, Sri Lanka added 22 runs, while Shanaka scored 20 runs out of those.

The off-spinner Mahedi Hasan was the hero of the evening with the ball as he had the bowling figures of 4-1-11-4. He dismissed four out of the first five Lankan batters, including the important wicket of the opener Pathum Nissanka.

Tanzid Hasan assured a comfortable win

In reply, although the opener Parvez Hossain Emon lost his wicket on the first ball of the innings, another opener Tanzid Hasan batted strongly and got enough support from the other batters to secure a comfortable win. Hasan had a 74-run partnership with the skipper Litton Das for the second wicket. The Player of the Series, skipper Litton Das, scored 32 runs in the match before getting out. However, Hasan continued his strong batting performance with the next batter Towhid Hridoy to ensure no more frustrating hiccups for the visitors. They had the 59-run partnership for the unbroken third wicket, where Hridoy scored 27 not out and Hasan scored 73 not out off 47 balls with one four and six sixes.

Litton Das and Shamim Hossain performed strongly after opening flops

The visitors had a poor start as they lost both the openers in the first two overs (Parvez Hossain Emon 0 and Tanzid Hasan 5), while they scored 39/2 at the end of the powerplay, courtesy of a steady partnership between captain Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy. They ultimately built up a 69-run partnership for the third wicket, where Hridoy scored 31 off 25 balls with two fours and one six.

Although Mehidy Hasan Miraz (1) only stayed for two balls, Das had another strong support from Shamim Hossain, as they set up a 77-run partnership for the fifth wicket. While the skipper scored 76 off 50 balls with one four and five sixes, Hossain was run out in the final over after scoring 48 off 27 balls with five fours and two sixes.

Among the Sri Lankan bowlers, Binura Fernando took three wickets (3/31), while Nuwan Thushara (1/30) and Maheesh Theekshana (1/30) got one wicket each.

All five Bangladesh bowlers managed to pick up at least one wicket. While Rishad Hossain bagged three wickets (3/18), Shoriful Islam (2/12) and Mohammad Saifuddin (2/21) got two wickets each, and Mustafizur Rahman (1/14) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (1/26) had one wicket each.

A bizarre visual took place during the second T20I game between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium, where the home fans left the field before the 15th over of their batting. It was bound to happen with the Charith Asalanka-led side finding themselves 86/8 on the 15th over of the chase.

The reports claimed that tickets were sold out for the encounter two days before the encounter, but a poor performance during the second T20I saw the fans leaving the ground way before it ended. Sri Lanka was never in the chase as they kept losing wickets in the second innings against the Bangladesh spinners.

The home side came into the second game after their inspiring all-around performance, where they chased down the 160-run score with seven wickets in hand and one over to spare. They batted well in that game in Pallekele but couldn’t repeat the same performance in Dambulla two evenings later.

Batting first, Bangladesh put 177 runs on the board for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs. They lost both openers, Tanzid Hasan and Parvez Hossain Emon, for single-digit scores before their captain, Litton Das, rescued them with 76 runs in 50 balls, shouldering on one boundary and five sixes at a strike rate of 152.

Shamim Hossain also provided them a late order firing attack with 48 runs in 27 balls at a strike rate of nearly 180, with the help of five boundaries and two sixes to shoulder them to 177/7 in their 20 overs. But the requirement was to still come up with a better bowling performance to restrict them.

In the second innings, Bangladesh was excellent, with only two batters for Sri Lanka, Dasun Shanaka and Pathum Nissanka, making it into the double digits. None of the other batters were able to do so. They lost their first three wickets for 25 runs before getting restricted to 71/6. Shoriful Islam and Mohammed Saifuddin picked up two wickets each while Rishad Hossain registered 3/18 in 3.2 overs. That helped the visitors earn a victory by 83 runs and level the series by a 1-1 margin.
