Team India’s new ODI skipper Shubman Gill had a disappointing start to his 50-over captaincy tenure as his side fell to a seven-wicket defeat against Australia in the opening match of the ODI series at Perth’s Optus Stadium on Sunday, October 19. With this result, the 26-year-old joined a rare list of prominent cricketers who began their captaincy careers in all three formats with losses.

Captaining a national side is never an easy task, the pressure, expectations, and tactical responsibilities can often be overwhelming at the start. While many skippers endure initial hiccups, only a handful have experienced defeats in their first game across Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.

Here’s a look at five star players who lost their first match as captain in all formats.

1. Shubman Gill

Gill’s ODI captaincy debut against Australia did not go as planned, as India stumbled to a modest 136/9 in a rain-affected encounter before the hosts chased the target comfortably under DLS conditions.

Earlier this year, Gill’s first Test as captain came in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 opener at Headingley, where England chased down 371 to clinch victory. Before that, he had led a young Indian T20I side in Zimbabwe in 2024. Despite India being firm favorites after reducing the hosts to 115/9, the team collapsed to 102 all out, with Gill’s 31 off 29 being the top score.

2. Virat Kohli

One of the most accomplished modern-day captains, Virat Kohli also endured defeats in his first games as skipper in every format. His Test captaincy debut came in the 2014-15 Adelaide Test against Australia, where he scored centuries in both innings but couldn’t prevent a narrow loss. In ODIs, his first outing as captain was during a 2013 tri-series match against Sri Lanka in the West Indies, where India suffered a 161-run defeat.

In T20Is, Kohli’s first match as skipper came against England in Kanpur, where India managed 147/7. England chased down the total with ease to win by seven wickets.

3. Shaun Pollock

The South African legend became the first captain to experience this unfortunate streak. Pollock’s ODI captaincy debut came against Pakistan during the 2000 Coca-Cola Cup in Sharjah, where South Africa were bundled out for 101 in pursuit of 169. His Test leadership began in Sri Lanka, where the hosts won by an innings and 15 runs thanks to Muttiah Muralitharan’s 13-wicket haul.

In T20Is, Pollock led just once, a rain-shortened match against West Indies in Port Elizabeth, where South Africa were restricted to 58/8 in 13 overs and eventually lost by five wickets.

4. Stephen Fleming

Regarded as one of New Zealand’s finest captains, Stephen Fleming too began his leadership career with defeats across all formats. His first Test as captain in 1997 against England at Christchurch ended in a four-wicket loss after the visitors chased down 307. His first ODI as skipper, also at the same venue against Sri Lanka, saw the Blackcaps post 201/9 before the visitors chased it down comfortably.

Fleming also captained in the first-ever T20I in history, played against Australia in 2005 at Eden Park. New Zealand lost that game by 44 runs following a blistering performance from Ricky Ponting.

5. Brendon McCullum

Another Kiwi great, Brendon McCullum, who later revolutionized New Zealand’s approach to cricket, also endured a poor start in all three formats. His first T20I as captain came against England at Eden Park, where New Zealand fell short by 32 runs while chasing 185. In ODIs, McCullum’s captaincy debut in 2009 against India ended in a heavy defeat, as Sachin Tendulkar’s 163 powered the visitors to 392/4. Despite McCullum’s brisk 71, the Kiwis were bowled out for 334.

In Tests, McCullum led for the first time during the 2013 South Africa tour, where New Zealand suffered a crushing innings defeat after being dismissed for just 45 in the first innings.

While these initial setbacks might have been forgettable, each of these cricketers went on to leave a strong legacy in their own right. Leadership in international cricket often begins with tough lessons, and for players like Shubman Gill, these early challenges could serve as the foundation for future success.

<![CDATA['It was a big moment' - CSK head coach Stephen Fleming lashes out after Dewald Brevis DRS controvery]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/it-was-a-big-moment-csk-head-coach-stephen-fleming-lashes-out-after-dewald-brevis-drs-controvery/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/it-was-a-big-moment-csk-head-coach-stephen-fleming-lashes-out-after-dewald-brevis-drs-controvery/ Sun, 04 May 2025 13:24:45 GMT

In a match that went down to the wire, Chennai Super Kings' narrow two-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Saturday was marred by a controversial DRS incident involving Dewald Brevis, which head coach Stephen Fleming has labelled a decisive moment.

The drama unfolded in the 17th over of CSK’s high-octane chase of 214. Facing Lungi Ngidi, Dewald Brevis was struck on the pad by a full toss that was quickly adjudged LBW by the on-field umpire. However, instead of reviewing immediately, Brevis and Ravindra Jadeja set off for a single. By the time the run was completed and a brief discussion ensued, the 15 second review window had lapsed. Brevis attempted to signal for a DRS but was denied, prompting a visible disagreement with Jadeja and an animated exchange with umpires Nitin Menon and Mohit Krishnadas.

“It was a big moment,” Fleming said in the post-match press conference. “In talking to Jaddu and Brevis, there was a lot going on with the running. I think they saw the ball ricochet and actually thought it had gone for four. In all that, the timing of the review got lost.”

Fleming says missed DRS cost CSK the match in close loss to RCB

Fleming stressed the complexity of the moment, acknowledging the confusion but also the costly nature of the delay. “As soon as you’re given out, the timer starts. The play kept going with the run and the throw at the stumps. Whether Brevis ran out of time or not, in the umpire's view he did. And that cost us big time.”

Adding another layer to the moment, Fleming explained that since Brevis was given out, the single wouldn't have counted even if the decision was overturned. “We’d have kept the wicket, yes, but not the run. Still, five runs would’ve made a difference.”

RCB's imposing 213/5 was built on quickfire knocks from Romario Shepherd (53 off 14) and debutant Jacob Bethell (62), with Virat Kohli also contributing 55. Despite Ayush Mhatre’s explosive 94 and Jadeja’s unbeaten 77, CSK finished at 211/6 just two short.

CSK now shift focus to their upcoming clash against KKR in Kolkata, hoping to bounce back from a defeat that could have gone very differently.

<![CDATA[Will Dewald Brevis Play Today Against SRH? CSK Coach Gives Hint]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/will-dewald-brevis-play-today-against-srh-csk-coach-gives-hint/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/will-dewald-brevis-play-today-against-srh-csk-coach-gives-hint/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 17:07:09 GMT

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is about to play Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2025’s 43rd match at MA Chidambaram Stadium on the 25th of April. CSK hasn’t had a great season, losing six out of eight matches and ruining their chances of making the playoffs this season. CSK’s season has been inconsistent, particularly in the batting department, preventing CSK bowlers from giving them a defendable total.

CSK’s issues are rooted in auction strategy, where CSK placed importance on establishing a good top order but didn’t build a middle-order plan. This lack of quality or depth in the middle order became apparent when CSK top-order players didn’t play well in the majority of matches. Additionally, when Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was injured, it depleted the batting lineup further. While CSK’s bowlers made great efforts to keep CSK in games, the batting lineup failed to either set a competitive total or chase the total down, leading to CSK’s poor start.

Now CSK will go against SRH with a very weak chance of starting an upturn, and CSK’s management faces a lot of pressure on how to fix the situation and improve overall squad composition. If CSK does make changes as they are speculated to, then they will select players to get CSK back on track.

Dewald Brevis: An Impact Player in the Making?

Recently, CSK acquired 19-year-old South African batter Dewald Brevis to replace injured Gurjapneet Singh at a cost of INR 2.2 crore after Brevis went unsold in the mega-auction. Brevis played the last two IPL seasons with the Mumbai Indians, so CSK must be familiar with his explosive potential, as the young Indian had an overall strike rate of 133.72 in ten IPL matches and 230 runs. CSK's addition of Brevis is noteworthy, given that they were able to take advantage of their one replacement overseas player in this situation.

Head Coach Stephen Fleming said Brevis could play against SRH. In fact, Fleming said Brevis could be playing against them. But he stated CSK will stay loyal to many players who have stuck it out for the duration of the season. "He's one of the options that we'll look at... Brevis is a good addition to the squad, but we just have to manage what we think will be the best team." As CSK desperately searches for a spark, Brevis may be able to provide the explosive impact that allows them to reinvigorate their season.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the remainder of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) after suffering a hairline fracture in his elbow. In his absence, MS Dhoni will take over the captaincy duties for the rest of the season, as confirmed by head coach Stephen Fleming ahead of their upcoming clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Friday, April 11.

Prior to CSK’s recent match against Punjab Kings, speculation was rife about captain Ruturaj Gaikwad sustaining an injury. Despite the concerns, he featured in the game, which CSK ultimately lost by 18 runs. Following the match, the franchise confirmed the leadership change via a post on their official X account, extending wishes for Gaikwad’s swift recovery. The injury reportedly occurred when Gaikwad was struck on his right forearm during CSK’s earlier defeat to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Guwahati.

"Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out of the season due to a hairline fracture of the elbow. MS DHONI TO LEAD. GET WELL SOON, RUTU !," posted CSK on their X account.

He got hit in Guwahati: Stephen Fleming

During the pre-match press conference ahead of Chennai Super Kings' upcoming game against Kolkata Knight Riders, head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed that an MRI scan had revealed the full extent of Ruturaj Gaikwad's injury. The CSK skipper sustained a hairline fracture on his right forearm, ruling him out for the rest of the IPL 2025 season. Fleming also officially announced that former captain MS Dhoni would lead the side for the remaining matches. The decision marks Dhoni’s return to leadership duties, bringing a wave of anticipation and excitement among CSK fans as the team navigates through the rest of the tournament.

"He got hit in Guwahati. He's been operating with an amount of pain. We got an X-ray, which was inconclusive, and we had an MRI, which revealed a fracture in his elbow, in the radial neck. So we're disappointed and feel for him. We appreciate the efforts that he's gone to in terms of trying to play, but unfortunately, he'll be out of the tournament from now. We have an uncapped player, MS Dhoni, who will take over as captain for the remainder of the IPL," Fleming said at the pre-match conference.

CSK's problems are digging them deep down. Out of 5 matches, they have lost 4, continuously leaving fans in agony. CSK's recent match is an example where your single mistake can ruin the entire effort of the match. They have failed in all departments which is why they are in the 9th position in the league table. Even they won their first match with enough struggles. It has ignited a fuel fire among the fans where they have felt frustrated to see their players playing so cheaply.

Their last game against Punjab Kings (PBKS) left a big question mark on the team's denting performance where they failed as a fielding unit, though it was a blunder from both sides, total 8 catches were dropped in that match, but a team which faced the maximum damage was CSK. They dropped the centurion Priyansh Arya two times, which paved the confidence in him to play freely.

After the match CSK coach was asked about the dropped catches and he felt disheartened and said this is a tough season going on for them. He said we had lost the match infield itself when you do lots of blunders in the field then you can't win the match. It seems batting was quite Ok compared to the rest of the games. We are trying to figure out things that are in our hands.

Immense Pressure Building On Team

It has been four matches on track which CSK has lost and every time an error of negligence has cost them the match. CSK scores in powerplay are the lowest compared to other teams, the tendency of acceleration has been missing completely. Stephen Fleming accepts that CSK batting has done quite a good job in their last outing.

CSK coach says We're 18 runs short in a big run chase, so we can look at three sixes here and there. It's been a frustrating season so far. The catching has been poor, but it was poor from both sides tonight. Whether it was something in the light, I'm not sure, but certainly for us, that was an area of concern.

CSK batsman has utilized their powerplay compared to the last 4 matches where they scored 61 runs in 6.3 overs. The positives are we batted a bit better. We've had some substance from the top order, which was a bit lacking, so we were able to then construct the chase. We just weren't able to keep the run rate at a good level through the middle, and it was just too much towards the end.CSK's next game is against KKR who lost their match in mere margin. Both the teams had a good match-up in past which would be replicated in tomorrow's match.

IPL 2025: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has started their IPL 2025 campaign in the worst way possible. The 5-time Indian Premier League winning team faced 3 defeats in 4 games they played so far, including last night's match against the Delhi Capitals, where CSK lost the battle while chasing the target.

The situation for the team becomes more rough when a journalist asks CSK head coach Stephen Fleming about Ravichandran Ashwin's YouTube channel. Earlier, before the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League, a video was uploaded on Ashwin's YouTube channel, where some panelists criticized the team building of Chennai Super Kings and the performance of the team.

Noor Ahmed was mentioned in the video

One of the panelists present in the video said that Noor Ahmed should not be picked from the auction by CSK management. Noor Ahmed is now the most consistent performer in the team. Perhaps the young Afghan was not bright enough against Delhi Capitals, but on average he tried to perform steadily, taking 10 scalps in 4 matches at a 7.86 economy rate, which makes him the highest wicket-taker in the ongoing IPL 2025 edition.

So the reporter asks Fleming whether this kind of video has any influence on the team's performance. CSK coach took some time to understand the question and then replied, "Mate, I have no idea. I don't even know he had a channel, so I don't follow that stuff. That's irrelevant. You guys are important."

DC vs CSK match

Last night, DC put a competitive 183/6 on the scoreboard. In reply, CSK was bundled for 158 in 20 overs despite 5 wickets in hand. Before Delhi, CSK tasted defeat against Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru; in all three matches, CSK fell short when they batted second.

Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming explained that MS Dhoni is batting lower in the order because of his knee issues. After CSK’s narrow 6-run loss to Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025 on Sunday, Fleming addressed the curiosity around Dhoni’s batting position. This season, Dhoni has been coming in between No. 7 to 9, and in this match, he batted at No. 7.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Fleming said the decision is mainly about managing Dhoni’s fitness while balancing his role as a wicketkeeper.

“It’s all about timing. MS knows his body well, and his knees aren’t the same as before. He’s still moving fine, but playing long innings at full intensity is tough. He decides on the day how much he can give.
If the game is tight, like today, he’ll come in earlier. Otherwise, he backs the other batters to do the job,” Fleming explained. He also mentioned that the team prefers Dhoni to bat after the 13th or 14th over, depending on the match situation.

“I said this last year too he’s too important to us as a leader and wicketkeeper to send him in too early. He has never been someone who bats for 9-10 overs. So from around the 13th or 14th over, he makes the call based on the situation,” he added. Even though Dhoni has played some quick cameos this season, his leadership and wicketkeeping remain the biggest priorities for CSK in IPL 2025.

Chennai Super Kings bowling department has struck a huge blow before the match against RCB in Chennai at Chepauk Stadium. Csk won their opening encounter against Mumbai Indians by 4 wickets as it would have been a tricky chase if Rachin Ravindra hadn't been in the crease who finished the proceedings. In that very match Csk was missing their premium bowler Pathirana, who was ruled out in last year's IPL season due to a hamstring injury.

It's been said that Pathirana is still in the recovery phase and may take time to recover, so he will be missing the second match against RCB which would be another exciting contest between these two teams.RCB would be using this advantage as they have not won in Chennai since the victory in 2008, its been 17 long years of wait which RCB try to rectify.

Pathirana Ruled Out At Last Year's IPL
Sri Lankan young bowler Pathirana was bought as a replacement player in 2022, whose death over bowling was quite impressive and soon he was an integral part of the team. He has taken 34 wickets at an average of 17.41. Till then Pathirana has been on player for the Csk franchise. He played a crucial role in the 2023 victory triumph which was his first IPL trophy too. Everything was going on w for him but last year he struck with a hamstring injury in mid of the season.

Since that, he has been in the recovery phase despite his injury, and Csk has retained him for 13 crores. It has been said that Pathirana is in the final stage of his recovery and requires a medical clearance certificate from the SLC board then only he would be able to take part in the league. Already Pathirana had missed the first game against Mumbai Indians and it was clearly seen that Csk was badly missing Pathirana at the death overs, where Deepak Chahar bashed Csk bowlers at the end.
Stephen Fleming On Pathirana Comeback
CSK is having an important match against RCB, where Pathirana services would have been much important but it has been stated by coach Stephen Fleming that Pathirana has been ruled out against RCB, as he is still recovering from his injury. Fleming portrayed both team's achievement and their complexity with each other.

Things change quite quickly. The RCB from last year and the CSK from last year are quite different. We don't look at all into past performances. Certainly looking at their team, Kohli is a big part of it, but they've got other strengths as well. With playing conditions always a factor in any game, the CSK head coach admitted that adaptability will be key as the team navigates different pitches throughout the tournament. Each pitch plays differently and one should be ready for every challenge.

New Zealand have won the second semi-final against South Africa in Lahore. The Champions Trophy final will be played against India Vs New Zealand in Dubai. It's going to be a hefty work for both the teams. New Zealand crushed South Africa by batting first putting upon a huge, total of 362 runs, cudos to Rachin Ravindra and Willamson for centuries which laid the strong foundation despite losing early wickets. They never looked freckled and South Africa looked clueless when they were bowling. There was no plan of action from South African captain Temba Bavuma.

When South Africa came to chase they were already in huge pressure of chasing a huge total and its been a habit of them chocking in crunch situation. Even today partnership of Temba Bavuma and Rassie Van Der Dessen couldn't save them, because rest of them fell like bunch of cards even though Miller crunched till end but it was too late.

It's New Zealand Vs India For The Finals

New Zealand will once again travel to Dubai for one last time where India is waiting for them. Both New Zealand and India were the best teams to be deserving in the finals. India has been unbeaten in the tournament like they were in the 2023 World Cup and New Zealand has just lost only one game that too against India, In the rest of the other games they have crunched the opposition.

India and New Zealand were in the same group of the Champions Trophy where India topped the table by beating New Zealand, thanks to the spell of Varun Chakravarthy who took a fifer and finished his redemption when he got hammered 5 years back in the same Dubai ground. It is a match between two quality sides who have equal firepower yet India still has the pain that they will never forget which was delivered in 2000

Repetition of the 2000 Champions Trophy Final

Let's take back to your days of late 2000 when the same teams which are now playing the finals of the 2025 Champions Trophy, played the highly intense final 25 years ago too. Where Stephen Fleming the current CSK coach and Saurav Ganguly leading their teams respectively. India won the toss and chose to bat first. It was Ganguly for India who was leading from the front scoring a fantastic century and accompanied by little master Sachin Tendulkar half a century gave New Zealand the target of 265.

When New Zealand came to chase believing it was not the kind of start they wanted they lost their openers Craig Spearman and Nathan Hassle, backed by Stephen Fleming even though half of the side was in the dugout. It was a match in hand for India, But then Chris Cairns expanded the innings completely he scored 102 runs from 113 balls supporting Chris Harris who scored 46. New Zealand won the match by six wickets with 2 balls to spear. It was a clear turn that no one expected and after 25 years the clock has come to its full rotation, where India and New Zealand going to face each other on Sunday 9 March.
