The 2025 season of the Asia Cup is knocking on the door as most teams have started their last-minute preparation. India, since the end of the fifth Test of the five-match series against England at the Kennington Oval, hasn’t played any competitive game and will turn up straight into the event.

They will be back in action in the T20 format of the Asia Cup. Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the United Arab Emirates are preparing for a tri-series at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, while Sri Lanka is facing Zimbabwe in an away T20I series. India’s opening game against the Arab Emirates will be on September 10 in Abu Dhabi.

Shubman Gill, after his famous 750+ run series in the United Kingdom during the summer, has returned to the shortest format with an additional responsibility of T20I captaincy. Suryakumar Yadav is the leader of the group, as Jitesh Sharma, the wicket-keeper batter, is expected to come at number six in the batting line-up.

Let’s take a look at the top 3 players to watch from India ahead of Asia Cup 2025.

3. Hardik Pandya

India’s premier pace bowling all-rounder, Hardik Pandya, brings the best balance to the team in the shortest format. With his ability, he can bat at number six in the lower order and can also offer four overs with the ball in the middle order. That provided the management with the option to play either an extra batter or bowler in the eleven.

Overall, Hardik has smashed 1812 runs in 90 innings of T20Is at an average of 27.87 and a strike rate of 141.67, with the help of five half-centuries at the best score of unbeaten 71 runs. In the bowling department, the right-arm pacer has picked up 94 wickets in 102 innings at an average of 26.43 and an economy rate of 8.20, thanks to the best figure of 4/16 in an inning.

During the IPL 2025, for the Mumbai Indians, Hardik smashed 224 runs in 12 innings at an average of 24.88 and a strike rate of 163.50 with the best score of unbeaten 48 runs. With the ball, he collected 14 wickets at an economy rate of under 10.

In T20s, Hardik has overall drilled 5575 runs in 263 innings at an average of just under 30 and a strike rate of 142.47 with 21 fifties, while with the ball, he has picked 204 wickets at an average of 28.11 in 242 innings.

2. Suryakumar Yadav

India’s T20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav, is known for his aggressive batting skills in the shortest format of the game. At number four, the right-handed batter has displayed all the power and skills to blossom in batting.

In 79 innings of the shortest format, Sky has smashed 2598 runs at an average of 42.33 and a strike rate of 167.07, thanks to four centuries and 21 half-centuries at the best score of 117 runs. On the other hand, in overall T20s, he has clubbed 8620 runs in 301 innings at an average of 35.47 and a strike rate of 153.32 with six centuries and 59 fifties.

During the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League, the Mumbai batter has got 717 runs in just 16 innings at an average of 65.18 and a strike rate of 167.91 with five fifties at the best score of unbeaten 73 runs.

3. Jasprit Bumrah

The premier pacer of the Blue Brigade, Jasprit Bumrah, is the best all-format bowler in world cricket. Whether it’s about bowling with the new ball inside the powerplay, or in the middle overs, or at the death, the Ahmedabad-born has displayed his various skills.

On T20Is, the right-arm pacer has picked up 89 wickets in 69 innings at an average of under 18 and a strike rate of 16.9 with an economy rate of just over six, thanks to the best figures of 3/7. His contribution with the ball during the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa in Barbados was a prime example of how vital the player is for the Blue Brigade.

During the IPL 2025, the Gujarat bowler collected 18 wickets in 12 innings at an average of under 18 and a strike rate of 15.7 with an economy rate of 6.67, thanks to the best bowling figure of 4/22 in an innings. In the overall 244 T20 innings, he has grabbed 313 scalps in an average of 20.22 and an economy rate of under seven.

If these three players of the Indian team do well in the batting and bowling departments, the Blue Brigade will have the best chance to defend their title, which they won during the 2023 Asia Cup in the 50-over version. The vital game will be against Pakistan on September 14 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the UAE.

Several current cricketers and former cricketers took to social media and shared their celebration pictures.

The likes of India T20I captais Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and former cricketer VVS Laxman were seen celebrating the festival with their family members. <![CDATA[‘Fingers crossed, feeling really well….’- Suryakumar Yadav shares major fitness update before Asia Cup]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/fingers-crossed-feeling-really-well-suryakumar-yadav-shares-major-fitness-update-before-asia-cup/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/fingers-crossed-feeling-really-well-suryakumar-yadav-shares-major-fitness-update-before-asia-cup/ Tue, 26 Aug 2025 21:10:47 GMT

India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav shared a fitness update after spending nearly six weeks at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. He has been undergoing recovery sessions following his recent surgery.

Suryakumar revealed that a carefully designed and structured plan played a major role in his comeback process. The training schedule was tailored to ensure steady progress, focusing on strength, conditioning, and injury management.

Thanks to this systematic approach, he managed to regain full fitness at the right time. Now, he is set to lead the Indian side in the upcoming Asia Cup, which begins in just two weeks, marking an important step in his return to competitive cricket.

Suryakumar Yadav Shares His Fitness Update:

Following the end of IPL 2025 in June, Suryakumar Yadav confirmed undergoing successful sports hernia surgery in Munich, Germany. After his return to India, he continued rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

Weeks of dedicated training and recovery paid off, as the 34-year-old expressed that he is “feeling good” in a video shared by the BCCI on X, updating fans about his fitness progress. He said, “ I'm feeling good right now. It's been five to six weeks. A good process, good routines for the last six weeks, and fingers crossed, feeling really well.”

Suryakumar disclosed that his injury was detected during the final stages of the IPL season. Interestingly, it was quite similar to the issue he had faced the previous year, making the recovery process both familiar and challenging for the experienced batter.

He further said, “ It actually got diagnosed close to the end of IPL. I felt it because I had a similar kind of injury last year as well, and that's how I got to know. So a few checklists were there. I tried those things and then I realised that it's time to go and do a small MRI.”

He added, “ When I did it, it was very clear in that. I did it after IPL and then went to Germany. It went really well, and I knew how the recovery is going to be step by step. So I was prepared for everything. So we took one week at a time, and we are here, and I'm feeling good.”

Suryakumar Yadav Thanks The Management:

Suryakumar shared that his rehabilitation program was quickly structured by the management soon after his injury was confirmed. He expressed gratitude to the staff at the Centre of Excellence, acknowledging their constant efforts and guidance, which played a key role in helping him regain fitness and return to peak performance gradually.

He said, “ I think the most important thing for me is when you come here at COE or when I was here at NCA last year as well, they understood how my body reacts to certain situations. So all the strength and conditioning coach and the physios, they understood how his body works, and accordingly they planned all the workouts. It was all instant. As soon as I used to hit the gym and I came here, they would plan the sessions, and that's how we took one week at a time, and slowly but steadily we are here.”

The Indian T20I captain spoke highly of the advanced equipment available at the Centre of Excellence. He described the facility as “unbelievable” and praised it as the finest setup he has come across in recent years for training and recovery.

He said, “ The place is huge. Let me talk about the gym first. I think more than 30-35 people can train here together. We have that big facility, and I actually used most of the equipment here. Some new equipment, which is actually very useful from an athlete's point of view. The place is amazing.”

He added, “ Not only for a rehab but if someone, any contracted player or a targeted player wants to come here for a few weeks, train, use the ground and everything. I didn't count, but I think there are more than about 60-70 wickets to practise as well. Then you have three grounds. Unbelievable facility and it's the best which I've seen for a really long time.”

Suryakumar Yadav is set to make his on-field return in the eagerly awaited Asia Cup, starting on September 9. Team India will launch their campaign a day later, facing off against the UAE, with Suryakumar ready to lead the side after completing his recovery and regaining full fitness.

The T20I captain of the Indian side, Suryakumar Yadav, has reflected on his recovery process at the new Centre of Excellence by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as he looked to recover from the sports hernia in his lower right abdomen to comeback during the Asia Cup 2025 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Suryakumar had a struggling home series against England as he accumulated 28 runs in five innings at an average of 5.60 and a strike rate of 116.66, with the best score of 14 runs. The right-handed batter will expect to continue the same skills and rhythm with the bat from the IPL, where he crossed the 600-run mark for the Mumbai Indians.

“Feeling good. It’s been a good process for five to six weeks. It actually got diagnosed during the IPL. I got to know that because I had this injury before. Very checkups, and then I did an MRI, which was clear of a requirement for surgery. I went to Germany, and post IPL, I did it. I was prepared for the recovery and took one week at a time. The Mumbai-born expressed his view on the BCCI CoE.

Surya will bat at number four in the line-up as they will be opened by Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma. The left-handed batter, Tilak Verma, will bat at number three while Jitesh Sharma will shoulder the responsibility of the wicket-keeping job and bat at the lower order.

“The most important thing for me, as I was at NCA last year as well, is that they understand how my body reacts to certain situations. All the body strengthening coaches and physios understand that. They planned all the instant workouts. Slowly but steadily, we are here as we took one week at a time. The Mumbai Indians-batter observed.

“This CoE is massive. More than 30-35 people can train together in the gym. Some of the new equipment is really good for rehab. There are nearly 60-70 wickets to practice at the ground, so that any contracted player can come and train here for about a week. Unbelievable facility that I have seen for a very long time.Suryakumar Yadav concluded.

The Indian squad for the Asia cup 2025 was announced on August 19. A 15 member squad was announced that had a mix of young talent and veterans. The likes of Shubman Gill, Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh made a come back into the squad. At the same time, there were apprehensions from the fans as many of the players missed out from the 15 member squad. The likes of Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal missed out from the squad, and this followed a huge uproar on social media regarding their snub.

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag has putforth his opinion on the squad. He has said that the new Indian squad has a mix of young talent and experience. He also showered praises on India captain Suryakumar Yadav. He added that Surya has a fearless mindset and has an attacking approach which will play a huge role in India winning the Asia 2025.

"This Indian team has the right mix of youth and experience, and under Surya's fearless leadership, they can dominate Asia once again. His attacking mindset suits the T20 format perfectly, and if the team plays with the same intent, I have no doubt India can lift the trophy," Sehwag said on Sony Sports Network.

India will play Pakistan in Asia Cup 2025

For the unversed, Asia cup will commence on September 9. India are placed in group alongside Pakistan, UAE and Oman. India will play Pakistan on September 14 at the Dubai Internation Stadium in Dubai. This fixture has drawn a lot of flak from the fans as they are calling Indian team to walk away from the game on the back of growing geopolitical tensions between the two countries.

<![CDATA[‘No chance of winning T20 World Cup...’- Former India selector drops shocking verdict on Asia Cup 2025 squad]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/no-chance-of-winning-t20-world-cup-former-india-selector-drops-shocking-verdict-on-asia-cup-2025-squad/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/no-chance-of-winning-t20-world-cup-former-india-selector-drops-shocking-verdict-on-asia-cup-2025-squad/ Wed, 20 Aug 2025 11:45:09 GMT

The former chief selector of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Kris Srikkanth, has slammed the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee and the T20I captain of the Blue Brigade, Suryakumar Yadav, for removing Axar Patel from the vice-captaincy for the Asia Cup 2025. He also questioned the presence of Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh, and Shivam Dube.

Srikkanth has struggled to find a reason for the removal of vice-captaincy for Axar, who was in charge during the home five-match T20I series against England earlier this year. Shubman Gill replaced the left-arm spin all-rounder in that position, as Srikkanth also predicted that even if the national side went on to the Asia Cup 2025, they might not do the same with the T20 World Cup 2026.

“We might win the Asia Cup with this team, but there is no chance of winning the T20 World Cup with this bunch. Are you going to take this team to the World Cup? Is this the preparation for the T20 World Cup, which is hardly six months away?” The former opening batter of India expressed on his YouTube channel.

Kris Srikkanth questions India’s decision to appoint Shubman Gill as vice-captain for Asia Cup 2025

In the press conference, Suryakumar added that Gill was always in the position of vice-captaincy. But they had to change it because the Punjab-born couldn’t play many T20Is due to the Champions Trophy 2025 and several other ODI and Test series, including the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 and recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy (ATT) 2025.

“They have gone backwards. Axar Patel has been axed from vice-captaincy. I don’t know how Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, and Harshit Rana have come in. IPL is considered the main criterion for selection, but the selectors seem to have considered performances before that.” The former Tamil Nadu opener reckoned.

India’s opening contest of the Asia Cup 2025 will be against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on September 10 before they lock horns with the arch-rivals, Pakistan, on September 14, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

<![CDATA['I cannot think of a reason for...' - Former India coach unhappy with exclusion of Shreyas Iyer from Asia Cup 2025 squad]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/i-cannot-think-of-a-reason-for-former-india-coach-unhappy-with-exclusion-of-shreyas-iyer-from-asia-cup-2025-squad/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/i-cannot-think-of-a-reason-for-former-india-coach-unhappy-with-exclusion-of-shreyas-iyer-from-asia-cup-2025-squad/ Tue, 19 Aug 2025 20:17:20 GMT

The Indian selectors, alongside skipper Suryakumar Yadav, announced the squad for the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to begin on September 9 in the United Arab Emirates. The meeting, originally set for 1 pm in Mumbai, was delayed due to bad weather, but Yadav and chief selector Ajit Agarkar later addressed the media in a joint press conference. Suryakumar will captain the team, while Shubman Gill has been appointed vice-captain. The announcement carried a few surprises, sparking debate among fans. Yashasvi Jaiswal, despite his promising performances, was left out of the 15-member squad, with Agarkar hinting that Abhishek Sharma is likely to open the innings alongside either Samson or Gill.

However, the biggest talking point was the shock exclusion of Shreyas Iyer, which left many fans and experts questioning the decision. Iyer, who has been a consistent performer and recently led Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final, was widely expected to feature in the squad. Agarkar acknowledged that Iyer had “not done anything wrong” but explained that it was difficult to find a replacement for him without disrupting the balance of the squad. Still, the decision has not gone down well with several former cricketers, including Abhishek Nayar, who openly voiced his disappointment.

“I cannot fathom Shreyas Iyer not being in that squad. If you say that he is that good a player, why is he not even in the reserves? Selection meetings can be quite interesting. I cannot think of a reason for Shreyas Iyer not being there in the 20-member squad. This sends a message to Shreyas Iyer that he is not in the scheme of things”, said Abhishek Nayar on the exclusion of Iyer.

Why Shreyas Iyer was dropped from Indian squad for Asia Cup 2025

When asked about Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion, chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified that the Punjab Kings skipper had done nothing wrong to be left out, acknowledging his strong numbers in T20 cricket. Agarkar explained that India’s batting order is already stacked, with the likes of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma all competing for the top four spots. Including Iyer, he added, would only disrupt the balance of the side. While questions were raised about Gill’s inclusion as vice-captain, skipper Suryakumar Yadav dismissed the doubts during the press conference. Despite not featuring in T20Is since 2023, Iyer showcased his quality in the IPL, lifting the trophy with KKR in 2024 and guiding PBKS to the final in 2025.

India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad looks well-rounded, with a mix of youth and experience. Jasprit Bumrah has been named to spearhead the pace attack, though he may not feature in all matches. Supporting him are Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, with all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube providing additional seam options. Given the UAE conditions, selectors opted for a spin-heavy approach to strengthen the bowling attack. For wicketkeeping duties, Jitesh Sharma joins Sanju Samson, ensuring depth in the batting order. The squad reflects India’s strategy of balancing proven match-winners with emerging talents, even though Iyer’s absence remains a hot talking point.

<![CDATA[Why was Shubman Gill appointed vice-captain in India’s squad for 2025 Asia Cup?]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/why-was-shubman-gill-appointed-vice-captain-in-india-s-squad-for-2025-asia-cup/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/why-was-shubman-gill-appointed-vice-captain-in-india-s-squad-for-2025-asia-cup/ Tue, 19 Aug 2025 18:54:02 GMT

India’s Test captain Shubman Gill has been recalled to the T20I squad and handed the vice-captaincy for the Asia Cup 2025, as announced on Tuesday, August 19. The 25-year-old replaces Axar Patel in the leadership group and will be playing his first T20I since July 2024. With the continental tournament beginning on September 7 in the UAE, Gill’s comeback adds both leadership and batting depth to the squad, as he prepares to resume his role in the shortest format after focusing on red-ball cricket.

Skipper Suryakumar Yadav said that Gill's absence from T20Is over the past few months was largely due to his commitment to Test cricket. Also, Gill was vice-captain even in his last T20I, so he had been entrusted with responsibilities. His return will bolster India days ahead of the Asia Cup by adding balance and experience to a team seeking another title.

"Last time when he played T20 post WC, when we went to SL, he was vice-captain. That's where we started new cycle for T20WC. After that we got busy with Test cricket, and he didn't get opportunities. We're happy to have him," Yadav said on Tuesday (via ESPN Cricinfo).

We obviously see leadership quality in him: Ajit Agarkar

Men’s selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar expressed confidence in Shubman Gill’s leadership and form, noting that the right-hander had already been leading in Test cricket and was also the vice-captain in the last T20I he played for India, as highlighted by skipper Suryakumar Yadav. Agarkar emphasised that the selectors clearly saw leadership qualities in Gill and hoped he would carry his outstanding form from the England tour, where he amassed 754 runs in five Tests, including four centuries, into the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 campaign.

“He is already leading in test cricket, like Surya mentioned he was VC in the last T20I he played for India. We obviously see leadership quality in him. His form in England is what we are hoping for," Agarkar said on Tuesday.

IPL performances rewarded for Asia Cup 2025

The biggest highlight of India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement was the recall of Shubman Gill, who was also handed the role of vice-captain. The 15-member squad saw the absence of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had been part of India’s victorious 2024 T20 World Cup squad. Jaiswal, however, was named among the five standby players. Meanwhile, wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma earned a spot in the main squad, joining Sanju Samson as one of the two keeping options for the continental tournament in the UAE.

Rinku Singh, who had only been a standby during the 2024 T20 World Cup, was rewarded with a place in the main squad this time. On the flip side, some big names were left out, including Shreyas Iyer, who missed out on both the main squad and the standby list. The selectors focused on balancing the squad with a mix of experienced campaigners and young talent as India aims to strengthen its side ahead of the Asia Cup challenge.

Shubman Gill was included in the Asia Cup 2025 squad and was named as the vice captain of the side. Gill will be playing a T20I game after almost one year if he features in the first game of the Asia Cup 2025. After the selection committee meeting on August 19 in Mumbai, Suryakumar Yadav addressed the question.

Suryakumar asserted that the Tests and ODIs kept Gill busy all this while. He also added that Gill being the vice captain of the side was a long running thought and the same was set as the cornerstone during Sri Lanka series. He also added that he is happy to see Gill back in the fray.

“In my opinion, the last time Shubman Gill played a T20I for India was when we went to Sri Lanka. When I was leading, he was the vice-captain. That's where we started the new cycle for the T20 World Cup,” said Suryakumar.

“After that, he got busy with all the Test series. He didn't get an opportunity to play T20Is because he was busy with Test cricket and the Champions Trophy. He is in the squad and we are happy to have him,” he added.

As per the weather forecast, there will be heavy rain in Mumbai. Multiple areas of the city are reportedly under water, and daily life has been disrupted. BCCI invited media persons for a press conference to announce the squad for the Asia Cup 2025. But because of relentless heavy rain, the press conference ran late from the actual scheduled time.

Meanwhile, Surykumar Yadav, the captain of India's T20I setup, has arrived at BCCI's headquarters in Mumbai. The moment of Yadav's arrival in the office was captured on camera. He reached there in a black full-size SUV. He too was talking about the rain. After getting out of the car, Surya said, "Bohot barish (heavy rain)." Though Yadav is able to reach the BCCI headquarters without any serious trouble, the other officials related to the press conference were not able to arrive, maintaining the scheduled time.

As per several claims, only Surykumar Yadav and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar are in the city. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia is delayed due to heavy rain and poor weather conditions. The flight operations are also being interrupted by the conditions. Surykumar Yadav arrived in the office with a casual outfit and a black eye.
