It was only the fourth time Surya has opted to bat first in T20Is, with three of these four games being dead rubbers as India own all of the previous three with margins of 133 runs, 135 runs, and 21 runs. The third game was a cakewalk for the Indian side as they completed the 155-run chase by eight wickets in just ten overs, which shocked the entire world about India’s aggressive batting unit ahead of the World Cup. They slipped in the fourth and previous T20I in Vizag, losing the contest by 50 runs.

Earlier in the game, New Zealand got a strong 100-run opening partnership thanks to Devon Conway’s 44 runs in 23 deliveries, while Tim Seifert smashed a fine knock of 62 runs in just 36 balls with the help of seven boundaries and three sixes that set the platform for the Blackcaps.
