The South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi made his Big Bash League debut in the 23rd Match of the BBL 2025–26 season. The experienced left-arm spinner for the Adelaide Strikers had an excellent game against the Perth Scorchers at the famous Perth Stadium.

The 35-year-old, who has played over 300 matches in T20 leagues across the globe, made an immediate impact. Shamsi struck in just the second over to get the best of a well-set Mitchell Marsh, giving the Strikers a much-needed break after seeing the excellent start by the home side.

Shamsi celebrated his first wicket in the BBL match in his special way. He removed his shoe and made a playful “phone call” gesture, a celebration fans have seen many times in other T20 leagues. The moment added excitement and quickly became a talking point of the match.

Shamsi’s Strong Spell Not Enough for Strikers

Shamsi continued his fine spell by striking again in the same over. He dismissed Cooper Connolly for a three-ball duck, putting extra pressure on the Scorchers’ batting lineup.

Later in the innings, the South African spinner picked up his third wicket by removing Scorchers captain Ashton Turner. Shamsi finished with excellent figures of 3 for 30 from his four overs, helping reduce Perth from a strong 72 without loss to 153 for 8.

Despite Shamsi’s impressive debut and a four-wicket haul by Lloyd Pope, the Adelaide Strikers failed to chase down the target. They lost the match by 33 runs, having lost three of the five matches played this season. At the moment, the Strikers, led by Matthew Short, are ranked sixth in the eight-team points table of the BBL 2025-26.

The Gauteng High Court has ruled against Cricket South Africa (CSA) in favour of their left-arm wrist spinner, Tabraiz Shamsi, which has been a landmark judgement to show the interest of the players over the global game. Shami has played 127 international games across formats and withdrew his SA20 contract with MI Cape Town in order to play the ILT20 and the Big Bash League (BBL).

Shami was signed by the franchise for USD 29000 approx. But he has given a personal issue for his withdrawal. He breached the terms of his auction agreement in doing so. He was signed for the Gulf Gants and was granted a NOC by CSA, which ran until December 19, midway through the ILT20. But the court has extended the NOC for Shamsi till January 04.

“I am grateful that the Court recognized the urgency of my situation and granted interim relief. I was reluctant to take this matter to court, but it became necessary to bring certainty and resolve a situation that could not be resolved in any other way.” Shamsi expressed in a statement by his management company.

Tabraiz Shami takes CSA to High Court for this reason

After the end of the ILT20, Shamsi will arrive in Australia to feature for the Adelaide Strikers. CSA, however, will take the next course of action after studying the judgment, as issuing the NOCs has become a significant subject in recent years, with various franchise leagues around the world.

“Shamsi was not granted an NOC to participate in another T20 league due to SA20 contractual stipulations. CSA has issued the NOC based on the interim relief and will study the court's decision to grant the same before deciding on the way forward.” Pholetsi Moseki, the CSA CEO, addressed ESPNcricinfo.

“I have always taken immense pride in representing South Africa and remain fully committed and available to play for my country whenever called upon. Representing South Africa has been the greatest honour of my professional career.” Shamsi added in a statement that he is now unlikely to feature in SA20 in the future. 

India and South Africa were playing a T20I on 12 December 2023 in Gqeberha. South Africa spinner, Tabraiz Shamsi brought up phone celebration, where he took out his shoe and put it on his ear after he grabbed Suryakumar Yadav’s wicket. Though the celebration was his trademark style, it was not well received by several fans on the social media.

Shedding light on the incident, Shami said that he received immense backlash for the celebration which had nothing to with the player. He even said that not only him, his family too received derogatory messages online after the incident traversed. Recently, he took to twitter and reminisced his statement again to clear the air over celebration and conveyed what he and his family went through.

“What do people achieve by abusing players and even the player's families? Do u feel good about yourself after that?

South Africa tour India in November 

South Africa will tour India to play 2 Tests, 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is. The long tour will start from first Test on 14 November 2025 in Kolkata to the last T20I on 19 December 2025 in Ahmedabad. It would be interesting to see if Tabraiz Shamsi makes the cut in the T20I and ODI squad and simmering rivalry will have another chapter to its lore.

Both Rangpur Riders and Hobart Hurricanes had an excellent start to the tournament, both winning their opening matches and currently stand in 2nd and 3rd position on the points table, respectively.

Rangpur Riders beat the Guyana Amazon Warriors by 8 runs, while Hobart Hurricanes defeated Dubai Capital by 7 wickets.
