Team India pacer Prasidh Krishna has revealed his heated exchange with Joe Root during the fifth Test against England at the Oval in London. Krishna said that Root thought he was being abused on the field. Although Root is usually a calm player, he got angry when England tried to take the advantage from India on Day 2 of the fifth Test. During the conversation, Root reacted aggressively, and the umpires had to step in and separate them.

Krishna on Heated Moment with Joe Root

Speaking in a recent interview with ESPN Cricinfo, Prasidh Krishna talked about his heated moment with Joe Root. He said, "I don't know why Rooty reacted. I just said, 'You're looking in great shape,' and then it turned into a lot of abuse. I spoke to most of them, including Root. I asked him what happened. He said, 'I thought you abused me.' I said, 'No.' He replied, 'I just wanted to get myself going, so I had to pump myself up.'"

“That’s what I love about the sport. That’s the way I’ve always played it. To see everybody, especially a legend like him, putting it all out there and fighting for the team, is something for everyone to learn from,” Krishna added.

Krishna Praises Root and Key Performance

Although Krishna struggled in his first two Tests, he played a key role in helping India win by six runs at The Oval. He took eight wickets across two innings as India defended 373 on Day 5. Krishna also praised Root for giving his best to help his team. He said, "That's what I love about the sport. To see everyone, especially a legend like him, putting it all out there and fighting for the team, is something for everyone to learn from. Sometimes it takes more than skill; it takes mental grit to be part of that journey."

More Incidents During the Test

Root was visibly upset at something Krishna said, shouting at the seamer before the umpires warned India about their behavior.

Ben Duckett was involved in two incidents during the match. In the second, he appeared to anger Sai Sudharsan after his late dismissal. Earlier, he was heard on stump microphones telling Akash Deep, “You can’t get me out,” only to be dismissed by the pace bowler and receive an unusual send-off.

The five-Test series ended 2-2, and India and England shared the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

Former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar said that Shubman Gill performed as well as Virat Kohli in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. India had a tough series, with senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli missing from the team. Still, the new Indian batting lineup stepped up and played well, dominating the English bowlers in their own home.

Bangar also pointed out that Yashasvi Jaiswal filled Rohit Sharma’s place and showed his talent in English conditions. With senior players stepping down from the Test format, Gill, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja performed strongly. All three scored more than 500 runs in the series.

Batting at No. 4 for the first time in his career, Shubman Gill finished as the top run-scorer in the series with 754 runs at an average of over 75, including four centuries. He also broke many records, including becoming India’s highest scorer in an innings in England with his 269 runs in the second Test at Edgbaston.

Gill and Jaiswal filled big shoes, says Bangar

Talking about how India coped with the absence of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar said on ESPN Cricinfo:

"Who were they replacing? If you look at the No. 4 spot, Shubman Gill has done as good as Virat Kohli could have done. And who has taken Rohit Sharma's place? It is Yashasvi Jaiswal, and he has also had an equally good series to show for. Because Gill and Jaiswal got the runs, the Indian team never missed the services of Rohit and Virat."

India still searching for a fast-bowling all-rounder

Bangar also said India may continue to try different lineups in Tests due to the lack of a proper fast-bowling all-rounder. "The Indian management has prioritised that over the last three to four seasons. But you want to have a fast-bowling all-rounder, and if India gets that, then the combination will settle itself. Till then, you’ll always have these question marks," he said.

India did not play spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the series. Instead, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar were picked as spin-bowling options because they are also good batters.

A new side of KL Rahul

Bangar also praised KL Rahul for his solid performance in the series. He said Rahul showed a new level of focus and helped Shubman Gill during difficult moments.

"He certainly looked the part and added to whatever he has done as a batsman by playing a lot of balls and being very consistent. His slip catching was good, and he supported Gill well. You could also see a new side of KL Rahul—he was more involved, talking to opponents and umpires at times," Bangar said.

The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy is turning out to be one of the most intriguing India-England test rubbers to have ever been contested. After a record chase of 371 runs by the Ben Stokes-led English team at Headingley, Leeds, India bounced back at Edgbaston in Birmingham to square the series at 1-1. With three more tests to be played, the battle is intensifying, and cricket is becoming scintillating. Both teams, fielding relatively younger sides as compared to the past, have evened out the clash, and this sets up beautifully for the rest of the English summer.

The Shubman Gill-led India produced a fitting and emphatic reply to that embarrassing defeat in Leeds. The newly appointed test skipper became the protagonist of a famous win in Birmingham, to level the series. They outplayed England in all facets, thumped them to claim a win for the ages, and a first at the venue in their ninth attempt. Gill displayed a batting masterclass by scoring 430 runs in two innings and becoming the batter with the second-highest aggregate in a test match, behind Graham Gooch's 456 against India in 1990. At 25 years and 301 days, the elegant Indian player also became the youngest skipper to win an overseas test. Akash Deep, the rising pace sensation, looked a class apart and returned the best match figures for an Indian bowler in England by finishing at 10/187.

A victory as fashionable as this one brought with it several records, but none of them greater than the Indian team registering their biggest away win in a test match by a margin of runs. This Edgbaston classic of 2025 is now etched in history as the first one in that list, courtesy of England being vanquished by a humongous margin of 336 runs. This creates curiosity among the statkeepers about other such test wins by India, ranking behind in the order. A magnified look into them might help understand the magnitude of those wins and the simultaneous ignominy inflicted on the opposition.

List of wins are;

North Sound, Antigua, 2019

India's first-ever test match in the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) 2019-21 cycle was against the West Indies in the Caribbean. Having been sent in to bat at the North Sound in Antigua, the Virat Kohli-led India went all-out for 297 runs but with sizeable contributions from KL Rahul, Ajinkya Rahane, and Ravindra Jadeja. Ishant Sharma's five-fer restricted the opposition to 222, helping take a valuable lead. In the second innings, India set the West Indies a mammoth target of 419 runs, courtesy of a century from Rahane and fifty-plus scores from Kohli and Vihari. In their chase, the home team bundled out for a meagre 100 runs. Jasprit Bumrah was at the heart of the bowling by bagging gobsmacking figures of 8-4-7-5 in a lethal spell. India eventually won by 318 runs, their biggest away test win at that time.

Galle, Sri Lanka, 2017

India toured Sri Lanka for an all-format series in July-August 2017. It began with the tests, and the first match was played at the picturesque Galle stadium. Opting to bat, India posted a massive total of 600 runs, with huge 150-plus scores from Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara. The hosts scored 291 runs in their first reply. With Virat Kohli leading the charge with a hundred in the second innings, Sri Lanka were set a gigantic total of 550 runs to chase. However, they were bundled out at just 245 runs, conceding the match to India by 304 runs.

Perth, Australia, 2024

In the biggest series of 2024, India toured Down Under for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Entering the Australian shores while having been in rough waters before, courtesy of an infamous home series loss against the Kiwis, the Indians had their task cut out. The pressure was to retain the trophy and also put forward a strong stake for the imminent WTC final. The backs were against the wall, and the chips were down. But against all the adversities, India produced a magical and memorable performance in the first test at Perth, shunning the Aussies and their media alike. Choosing to bat, India could only manage a paltry total of 150, but stunned the hosts by bowling them out for even lower, a team score of just 104 runs. In the second turn, India turned the tables and outbatted the Aussies by accumulating 487 runs through essential contributions from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli. While chasing, Jasprit Bumrah's bowling heroics foxed the opposition batters, and India, in unbelievable circumstances, defeated Australia by 295 runs.

Leeds, England, 1986

The Kapil Dev-led India toured Great Britain in 1986. In the second test match at Leeds in June, the Indians scripted a historical win over the Englishmen. Coming into this one on the back of a victory in the first game in London, India's World Cup-winning captain in 1983, elected to bat. In both innings, they scored 272 and 237 runs respectively, with impactful contributions from Dilip Vengsarkar (61 and 102). He also went on to win the man of the match award. England, in their batting scorecard, could only manage 102 and 128 runs, respectively, in their two innings, with Roger Binny scalping the most number of wickets. India claimed a victory by 279 runs and took an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the series.

The Indian Cricket Team's highly anticipated test tour of England is almost around the corner. The bumper five-test rubber marks the beginning of the new World Test Championship Cycle (WTC) for 2025-27. The teams will be playing for the 'Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy' as the name of the mega series has been changed from the original 'Pataudi Trophy'. The five matches are slated to be played at Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord's in London, Old Trafford in Manchester, and The Oval in London. The first of the marquee clashes commences on Friday, 20th June, and fans are eagerly waiting to witness some exhilarating red ball cricketing action.

The India Test Team enters this new cycle while being in a transitional phase. With the retirement of stalwarts like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin, a new era beckons for the young group of players in the UK. It's up to the next generation, surrounded with only a few notable senior players currently, to carry forward the legacy and build further. With Shubman Gill being handed over the skipper duties, and some new additions in the squad, it will be interesting to see their blueprint for a healthy transition ahead.

India's time on the British shores began with an unofficial test series between the England Lions and India A. The purpose of this series was to provide some match practice to the players entering the test arena from IPL T20 cricket. The two 4-day encounters served as red ball game time for a lot of First-Class (FC) cricketers in the reckoning for the senior team. With a few chances of impressing the coach and national selectors by their cricketing skills on English soil, players like Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Harshit Rana, Anshul Kamboj, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and Sarfaraz Khan took the field against the Lions. Both matches ended in draws, however, there was a bigger picture associated with the outcome of the games. Understanding the conditions and analyzing a few players for some potential spots and backups in the main starting XI against England in Leeds were at the topmost of the agenda.

An intra-squad warm-up match was organised in Beckenham to precede the series opener. All the players from the touring party were divided into two teams for one final simulation and to decide on players staying back. In a surprising and unexpected selection move, Harshit Rana was favoured and added to the test squad for the first game as a bowling cover. The rest of the 'India A' players were on their way back home. In a move that has faced backlash since, it is seen as an unfair one on Anshul Kamboj, potentially the most deserving candidate to be included in the squad, but not to be for now. Both of them, originally, were not in the squad, but Harshit, a 23-year-old right-arm Delhi pacer, got the nod over Anshul, a 24-year-old quick from Haryana. The former debuted in Australia in late 2024 and picked up just four wickets from two 'Border-Gavaskar Trophy' tests. However, the decision of his current inclusion hasn’t gone down well with a former Indian cricketer, who reprimanded the team management for their obsession with Rana.

Standing on the right side of numbers in First-Class (FC) cricket, and in the recently played series against the England Lions, Anshul has produced better returns than Harshit. A statistical comparison between the two, in red ball cricket, upholds this fact.

Keeping the stats under scrutiny and then considering this bizarre decision, speculations have arisen over bias. Fans and former cricketers have spoken out against the team management, selectors, and head coach, Gautam Gambhir, for their favouritism towards Harshit Rana. Anshul Kamboj deserved to stay back and get added to the main squad for the series. It will be interesting to see if Rana can pay back the faith shown in him. Regardless of that, as Shubman Gill takes guard at the dawn of India's next test, unless batters don't play responsibly, much can't be expected from the outcome of the series. India has a great arsenal in their bowling ranks, and they will certainly deliver the goods from the word go.

India vs England 5-match Test series is starting today, Friday, 20 June, in Leeds. This series is being launched with a new name – the Tendulkar-Anderson Series. Before the start of the series, former England cricketer and commentator Nasser Hussain praised one player a lot. His statement about Virat Kohli is getting a lot of attention.

Nasser Hussain also said that while he has many favourite moments between England and India, the one he remembers the most is how the Indian team became a mirror image of then-captain Virat Kohli during the 2021 Lord’s Test. In that match, England lost to India by a big margin of 151 runs.

Virat Kohli, who was part of Team India during the last tour, is not playing this time. The 36-year-old batsman said goodbye to his favourite format, Test cricket, last month. His decision left his fans disappointed.

'It is important to note that Virat was one of the biggest supporters of Test cricket during the rise of T20 cricket.' Speaking to Sky Sports before the first Test, former England cricketer and commentator Nasser Hussain spoke about Kohli's impact on the longest format of the game. He said that Virat Kohli gave a lot to Test cricket.

What Nasser Hussain said

"It was great to hear what he said about Test cricket after winning the IPL. He told the next generation how they can make a name in Test cricket. I remember the ECB asked me something the next day — what is your favourite India vs England moment in history. There have been many, but one that stayed with me the most was from the 2021 Lord’s Test," Hussain said.

"He was in the huddle on the final day. England were trying to chase a target. Virat was motivating every Indian player, asking them to attack England’s batting for 60 overs. That’s exactly what they did. They attacked and played with intensity. The team looked like a mirror image of Kohli – full of energy and passion. Test cricket was so much better when Virat played."

Hussain recalled how players like Siraj, Bumrah, and Shami played with aggression, reflecting Kohli’s character on the field.

He added, "We will move on. We moved on from Gavaskar to Tendulkar, then to Kohli, and maybe now to Gill. But Kohli gave a lot to the game of cricket. Fans and experts may move on, but his impact in Test cricket will always be remembered."

Sachin Tendulkar has finally addressed the recent controversy surrounding the renaming of the India-England Test series trophy to the 'Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy.' The move, jointly announced by the BCCI and ECB, has replaced the long-standing 'Pataudi Trophy,' which honored the legendary Indian captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. This decision sparked considerable backlash from fans and experts who felt that the legacy of Pataudi should not have been sidelined.

Speaking to RevSportz, Tendulkar revealed that the decision to retire the Pataudi Trophy was entirely that of the cricket boards. “Let me then tell you the full thing. First things first, the decision to retire the trophy rested with the BCCI and the ECB. Only after they had taken the decision did they communicate that to me,” he clarified. Tendulkar also expressed deep respect for the Pataudi family's contributions to Indian cricket, acknowledging both Pataudi senior’s and junior’s impact on the sport. “I am conscious of the contribution they have made to Indian cricket… those stories inspire us all,” he said.

Determined to ensure that the legacy was not erased, Tendulkar took personal steps to keep it alive. “That’s why I was determined to ensure that the legacy was kept intact,” he stated. He further revealed that he had conversations with the Pataudi family and followed up with discussions with ICC President Jay Shah, the BCCI, and the ECB to explore ways to honor the Pataudi legacy.

Pataudi Medal and England Connection

Thanks to Tendulkar’s efforts, a new honor—the Pataudi Medal of Excellence—will now be awarded to the winning captain of the series, preserving the Pataudi name in a different form. Tendulkar emphasized the importance of this outcome, stating, “I spoke to Mr. Jay Shah, the BCCI and the ECB, and mentioned to them that something had to be done to ensure the legacy stayed on.”

Reflecting on the naming of the trophy after himself and James Anderson, Tendulkar shared his deep personal connection with England. “Not many know that the first-ever flight that I took was also to England in 1988... My first international hundred was at Old Trafford… I was the first non-English cricketer to play for Yorkshire... my mother-in-law is English... I feel humbled that the trophy was named after Jimmy Anderson... and myself.”

<![CDATA[ENG vs IND: Kapil Dev not happy with Pataudi Trophy getting a new name, says it feels a bit odd]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/eng-vs-ind-kapil-dev-not-happy-with-pataudi-trophy-getting-a-new-name-says-it-feels-a-bit-odd/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/eng-vs-ind-kapil-dev-not-happy-with-pataudi-trophy-getting-a-new-name-says-it-feels-a-bit-odd/ Wed, 18 Jun 2025 23:44:55 GMT

Kapil Dev has said he felt a bit surprised by the decision to rename the Pataudi Trophy as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He called the change “a little strange.” The trophy, given to the winner of the Test series between India and England in England, has now been renamed by the ECB to honour cricket legends James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar.

“It feels a little strange… like, does this also happen? But that’s okay, everything happens in cricket. In the end, it’s still the same game. What matters most is the cricket played on the field,” Kapil said at an event held by Three Sixty, where he was honoured for his famous 175 not out against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup.

The name change has also upset other former players, including Sunil Gavaskar, who called it “disturbing.” The Pataudi Trophy was started in 2007 and named after former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. His family has a strong connection with India-England cricket both he and his father, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, captained India and played county cricket in England.

Though the name of the trophy has changed, the Pataudi legacy will still be remembered. A special Pataudi Medal will be given to the winning team’s captain at the end of the series.

June 18 also marks 42 years since Kapil Dev’s historic innings at Tunbridge Wells, where he scored an unbeaten 175 against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup.
India were struggling at 17 for 5 when Kapil turned the game around with 16 fours and six sixes. His knock is still remembered as one of the best ever in one-day cricket and played a big role in India’s first World Cup win.

Legendary English pacer James Anderson has reacted to the new name of the England vs India Test series trophy, which is the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

India vs England Test series trophies have two different names depending on the hosting nation. Previously, the England vs India Test series in England was known as the Pataudi Trophy, in honour of Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, who was the only cricketer to play for both England and India in Test cricket. On the other hand, the India vs England Test series in India is known as the Anthony de Mello Trophy, in honour of one of the founders of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy replaces Pataudi Trophy

However, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has decided to replace the Pataudi Trophy with the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The new name is in honour of the two legends, former English cricketer James Anderson and former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar is the leading run-scorer in Test, ODI, and international cricket, while Anderson is the leading Test and international wicket-taker as a pacer (third leading Test and international wicket-taker as a bowler).

It's a huge honour: James Anderson

The 42-year-old former English pacer James Anderson, who retired from international cricket last year but is still active in the game, feels a huge honour, which he still finds unbelievable.

During a WP World event at Lord's, Anderson told ESPNcricinfo, "It's a huge honour. I still can't quite believe it. Sachin is someone I looked up to when I was growing up, though I don't want to do him a disservice with his age. I remember watching him, an absolute legend of the game, and I played against him a lot as well. So to have this trophy is a huge honour for me, and I couldn't be more proud."

<![CDATA['You've lost all respect' - Former cricketer slams move to rename Pataudi Trophy as Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy ahead of ENG vs IND 2025 Tests]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/you-ve-lost-all-respect-former-cricketer-slams-move-to-rename-pataudi-trophy-as-anderson-tendulkar-trophy-ahead-of-eng-vs-ind-2025-tests/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/you-ve-lost-all-respect-former-cricketer-slams-move-to-rename-pataudi-trophy-as-anderson-tendulkar-trophy-ahead-of-eng-vs-ind-2025-tests/ Mon, 09 Jun 2025 13:29:09 GMT

Former Indian cricketers have openly criticized the renaming of the Pataudi Trophy to the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy ahead of the upcoming five-match Test series in England. The decision, made to honor Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson — the highest run-getter and wicket-taker in the format among the two nations — has sparked backlash from those who felt the original name held historic significance. Previously, the trophy was named after Nawab Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and his son, former Indian captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi.

Saad Bin Jung, former first-class cricketer and a member of the Pataudi family, expressed deep disappointment. Speaking to Mid-Day, he said,

“It’s baffling to see a cricketer permitting a trophy to be taken away from a former Indian Test captain and renamed in his own honor.
This reflects a total disregard for the cricketing community and his seniors in the game.”

He further added, “It speaks volumes about how far people are willing to go for recognition — any form of fame, even if it means overshadowing those who led Indian cricket before them.
In doing so, you’ve lost all respect in my eyes and in the eyes of the entire cricket fraternity,” he added.

Calls for Respecting Cricket’s Legacy

Former India player Yajuvendra Singh echoed similar sentiments, slamming the decision to scrap the historic title.

“It is ridiculous to retire the Pataudi Trophy.
Tiger, to me, was one of the greatest Indian cricketers to play the game. He led India for over a decade and played with one eye — that’s greatness personified! I can’t imagine a single international cricketer performing the way he did at the highest level. Milburn, Ranji, and many others tried and failed. The BCCI should have stepped in before the proposal came from the England and Wales Cricket Board [ECB].”

Former India spinner Venkatapathy Raju has also weighed in on the controversy, stating that replacing the Pataudi Trophy was not necessary.
Raju, who represented India in 81 international matches, said (via Mid-Day):

“Sachin Tendulkar is the highest run-scorer and Anderson the highest wicket-taker [against India], so maybe that was the reasoning behind this decision, but discarding the Pataudi Trophy entirely feels unnecessary.”

The Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy is scheduled to be unveiled ahead of the first Test between India and England, which begins at Headingley in Leeds on June 20.

India vs England Test series gets shocking new name!]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/goodbye-pataudi-trophy-india-vs-england-test-series-gets-shocking-new-name/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/goodbye-pataudi-trophy-india-vs-england-test-series-gets-shocking-new-name/ Thu, 05 Jun 2025 22:13:37 GMT

The upcoming five-Test series between England and India is to mark the beginning of an era of cricketing competition with the launch of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. The series, which is to start on June 20 in Headingley, is to pay tribute to two contemporary greats—India's batting kingpin Sachin Tendulkar and England's greatest fast bowler James Anderson. This change is a break with the past since the series will no longer be contested for the Pataudi Trophy, which had been the emblem of India-England Tests in England since 2007.

The Pataudi Trophy was introduced to celebrate 75 years of Test cricket between the two countries and honored the legendary Pataudi family. Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and his son Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi both led India and have left a lasting mark on the game. The retirement of the Pataudi Trophy has evoked responses from all over the cricketing universe, especially from retired Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar, who has criticized the move as insensitive to the contributions of the Pataudis to cricket in both nations.

In spite of the controversy, the new Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy seeks to honor two icons who defined the contemporary age of Test cricket. Tendulkar, the record run-scorer in Tests with 15,921 runs, and Anderson, the leading fast bowler of all time with 704 wickets, played 14 Tests against each other. Anderson particularly bowled out Tendulkar nine times—the most by any bowler—which made their tussle a bookend saga of 21st-century cricket.

Tribute or Tradition: Trophy Renaming Debate

Sunil Gavaskar's criticism is part of a larger debate regarding cricket's changing attitude towards paying tribute to its icons. While the ECB and BCCI might consider the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy an apt tribute to two superstars of the game, there are people who consider the retirement of the Pataudi Trophy a decision that forgets greater historical context.
