To err is human. Yes, this saying can't be any truer for the umpires who have been at the forefront of numerous howlers since the very inception of the game. As human beings themselves, they are also entitled to commit mistakes. While umpiring standards have remained questionable for the most part before the post-DRS era, the use of technology has certainly eradicated some of the common blunders that used to be committed time and again by the umpires.

Although the close caught behind appeals and contentions LBW calls have now been put to rest, thanks to the timely arrival of Snicko and DRS technologies, a rather strange kind of umpiring howler has surfaced in recent times. It has got to do with umpires failing to accurately count the number of balls in an over. Although these instances are a rarity in the contemporary cricket world, when they do, they tend to create an unprecedented buzz throughout the cricketing fraternity. From calling an over prematurely to allowing an additional delivery, here are the top five moments when umpires miscounted an over in modern-day cricket (21st century).

Pakistan vs Netherlands, 2023 ODI World Cup

In Pakistan’s 14th over, only five deliveries were bowled. The on-field umpires, Adrian Holdstock and Chris Brown, mistakenly believed a six‑ball over had been completed after Saud Shakeel hit the fifth ball for a boundary. They promptly moved to what they thought was the next over. The TV umpire, Rod Tucker, did not intervene to correct the miscount, and the match continued. Besides, there was no involvement from the scorers and the match referee, either, when the incident occurred. By the time the mistake was uncovered, the game had already progressed by a few overs. As a result, the official scorecard graphic had to be taken down as the correct scores could not be updated on time. After nearly 30-long minutes, the scorecard finally appeared on the TV sets, giving the viewers some clarity regarding the scores.

Bangladesh vs New Zealand, 2023 ODI tour

In the 47th over of New Zealand’s innings, bowled by Mahedi Hasan, the on-field umpire (Sharfuddoula) lost track of the deliveries. As a result, instead of the regulation six balls, Mahedi Hasan ended up bowling seven deliveries in that over. Fortunately, the extra delivery didn’t influence the match outcome. New Zealand captain Lockie Ferguson swung and missed, and no runs were scored off that illegitimate ball. The error occurred mid to late in New Zealand's reply, during a key phase of the innings. Despite the blunder, there was no tangible consequence on the scoreboard. Bangladesh went on to lose the match by 86 runs, largely thanks to Ish Sodhi’s 6-wicket haul.

Sri Lanka vs South Africa, 2021 Sri Lanka tour

Another instance of a seven-ball over occurred during South Africa's white-ball tour to Sri Lanka in 2021. During the 1st ODI, one of the on-field umpires miscounted while Aiden Markram was bowling, resulting in a seven-ball over in the 16th over of Sri Lanka’s innings. As Markram was sifting through his deliveries, the scorers had had no time in alerting the on-field umpires about the impending blunder. As a consequence, Sri Lanka went on to win the game by 14 runs, with Markram playing a crucial role by adding a gutsy 96 to take his side close to the finishing line.

Sydney Sixers vs Perth Scorchers, 2019–20 BBL (Big Bash League)

A controversial moment ensued when Michael Klinger was dismissed on the seventh legitimate delivery of the over, an illegal occurrence because the umpires miscounted. The on-field dismissal had to stand according to the laws, even though the broadcaster noticed the extra delivery during the review. The over, bowled by Ben Dwarshuis against the Sydney Sixers, mistakenly allowed a seventh legal delivery. During that delivery, Klinger edged a shot and was caught at third man by Steven O’Keefe. Upon delivery, the umpires consulted the TV umpire to validate the catch, but no one noticed the extra delivery, even though it was indeed the seventh legal ball with no wides or no-balls preceding it. Cricket Australia later acknowledged the umpiring blunder and stated a review process would be established to probe this matter further.

Negative consequences of a miscalculated over

The immediate impact of a miscounted over is felt by the broadcasting team, who are responsible for showing accurate scores to the viewers at all times. The scoring system is predominantly designed to handle only six balls in an over. As per the current mechanism, the scoring system can potentially crash if the over is to be called earlier, before the completion of six balls, or if another delivery is allowed outside the six balls. During the ongoing ODI WC clash between Pakistan and the Netherlands in 2023, the entire scorecard graphic had to be taken down for 30 minutes as the broadcasting team continued to grapple with updating the right score.

Besides, the scorers who tend to work behind the scenes during a live game also get a headache when such obstacles are encountered. Apart from overall team scores, scores need to have a close tab of individual scores and performances. But when an umpire miscounts, the scorers need to make additional amendments to that miscalculated over and also accurately adjust the total number of overs against the bowler, who played a part in that miscounted over. Moreover, counting the balls in an over is of paramount importance in a limited-overs fixture. In white-ball cricket, the number of deliveries isn't infinite, hence every ball has significance. Minimizing or stretching an over by even a single delivery can result in the umpires unintentionally giving undue advantage to either of the two sides.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has raised serious concerns over the performance of TV umpire Adrian Holdstock during the first Test against Australia in Barbados. Following a series of controversial decisions on Day 2, Sammy reportedly met with match referee Javagal Srinath seeking clarity on multiple calls that went against the West Indies. He also recalled similar frustrations with Holdstock's officiating during the recent ODI series in England, where the South African served as TV umpire twice and stood on-field in another game.

Two incidents in particular left the West Indies camp dismayed.
The first involved the dismissal of captain Roston Chase, adjudged lbw to Pat Cummins despite what Sammy and the team believed was a clear inside edge. The second was the decision to give Shai Hope out caught behind off Beau Webster, a catch ruled clean upon review by the third umpire. Sammy, frustrated, said, "We are just trying to find some sort of understanding as to what the process is... We only hope for consistency. That’s all we could ask for. When there is doubt in something, just be consistent across the board."

Sammy didn’t mince words, stating that doubts about this particular umpire's consistency began during the England series. "Yeah, look, you don't want to get yourself in a situation where you're wondering about certain umpires. Is there something against this team?
But when you see decision after decision, then it raises the question," he said. "So I want to have that conversation as to the process... so we could all be clear. Because, at the end of the day, you don’t want to be going into a Test match not trusting the umpires."

Sammy seeks clarity amid growing frustration

While Sammy stopped short of confirming whether a formal complaint would be filed, he admitted to having questions. "You'll have to wait and see for that," he said when asked about lodging an official protest. Speaking specifically about Chase's dismissal, which broke a 67-run partnership with Hope, he added, "In our opinion, we saw the ball deviate onto the pad." On Hope's catch, Sammy referenced a similar incident from the previous day, when a catch taken by Hope to dismiss Travis Head was ruled not to have carried. "I'm just saying, judge what you see," Sammy remarked. "Again, I don't know what he's seen, but from the images that we've seen, the decisions are not fair enough for both teams. I just want fairness."

Australia, too, shared some of the unease. On Day 2, they had an lbw review against Chase turned down due to “insufficient evidence,” despite replays suggesting a pad-first impact. Mitchell Starc voiced doubts about the syncing of visuals and audio. "As players, you can only ask a question. We don't use the technology to make that decision... it sort of felt like, or looked like, the Snicko and the images were out of sync," he said. Sammy, aware of the boundaries when commenting on officials, had already instructed his players not to speak publicly. "We know the rules. We know fines are going all across the board... but look at the Test match (us) against our own selves, some of these decisions, and we're still in a position to win," he added.

Rishabh Pant, who delivered a record-breaking performance with twin centuries in the ongoing Headingley Test against England, was officially reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday, ahead of Day 5. The reprimand came due to an incident during England’s first innings, where Pant’s on-field behavior was deemed in breach of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Pant was found guilty of violating Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match.” As a result, the 27-year-old was issued an official reprimand and also received one demerit point for his actions during a dispute over the condition of the ball.

The incident occurred in the 61st over of England’s first innings while Harry Brook and Ben Stokes were at the crease. Pant was seen arguing with the umpires over the condition of the ball. “When the umpires refused to change the ball after checking it with the ball gauge, the wicket-keeper showed his dissent by throwing the ball on the ground in front of the umpires,” the ICC noted. The report was filed by match referee Richie Richardson following inputs from on-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Mike Burns. Pant admitted to the offense and accepted the sanction, avoiding a disciplinary hearing.

Pant’s Heroics Overshadowed by Dissent Incident

Level 1 breaches under the ICC Code carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum of a 50% match fee fine along with one or two demerit points. While the incident didn’t escalate further, it marks a rare off-field blemish in an otherwise outstanding Test match for Pant.

The Headingley Test heads into a dramatic final day with England needing 350 runs to win. Pant’s twin centuries, totaling 252 runs, were crucial in putting India in command. His performance is now the highest aggregate in a Test match by an Indian wicketkeeper and places him alongside Andy Flower as only the second keeper in history to score two hundreds in a single Test.

India vice-captain Rishabh Pant had a heated argument with the on-field umpire during the morning session on Day 3 of the current first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Pant was seen clearly agitated by the state of the Dukes ball and walked up to the umpire, asking him to check it. The umpire complied and passed the ball through the official gauge, but Pant’s concern was ultimately dismissed.

The incident took place during the 63rd over, while Ben Stokes and Harry Brook were at the crease. As seen in a now-viral video, Pant seemed displeased with the umpire’s response and, in frustration, threw the ball away after the conversation.
His gesture highlighted India’s dissatisfaction with the ball condition during a key phase of the match when England was building a partnership.

Earlier in the day, both teams took the field wearing black armbands to honor former England fast bowler David Lawrence, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 61.
A moment’s applause was also observed before the start of play on Day 3 in tribute to Lawrence, fondly known as ‘Syd.’

Tributes Pour In for Former England Pacer David Lawrence

David Lawrence, the first British-born Black cricketer to represent England, played five Tests and one ODI between 1988 and 1992. He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in 2024 and had been battling the degenerative illness for over a year. The BCCI confirmed the tribute in a statement: “Both teams are wearing black armbands to pay their respects to former England Cricketer, David 'Syd' Lawrence, who has sadly passed away.”

Lawrence, a Gloucestershire legend, took 515 wickets in 185 First-Class matches and 155 wickets in 113 List A games. Famous for his hot pace, his international career was cut short by a dreadful kneecap injury in a Test against New Zealand in Wellington in 1992. In his later life, he wrote a book, Syd's Voice, to bring awareness about MND and continued to be involved in fundraising for patients suffering from the disease.

South Africa will clash against Australia in the 2025 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final at the illustrious Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. Australia will play as the defending champions after defeating India in the 2023 WTC final at The Oval. For South Africa, this will be their first time playing in a WTC Final, a historic moment for the Proteas.

While Australia is considered the favorite with a strong record, South Africa is close behind and has a chance to make history. Both teams took some important decisions when they announced their respective playing XIs, especially regarding their bowlers. In South Africa, Ryan worked with Lungi Ngidi over Dane Paterson, while Australia chose Josh Hazlewood over Scott Boland, and the biggest talking points will be moving Wiaan Mulder and Cameron Green to No. 3 for their teams.

Australia will enjoy a dominant record in head-to-head matches with 54 wins compared to South Africa’s 26 wins. South Africa has had more consistency in recent years, and this could be an even contest.

SA vs AUS, WTC 2025 Final—Toss Result

South Africa won the toss and decided to bowl first in the final. Speaking after the toss, captain Temba Bavuma said:

"We will bowl first. The surface looks like a good one. Overhead conditions dictate that we will bowl first. We will look to make inroads early on. Happy. I think we have selected the best team for these conditions. Massive. All of us have been confident. Being in the final, that’s what we wanted to do. It should be a spectacle of a game."

Australian captain Pat Cummins stated that he was happy to bat first.

Australia: Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.

SA vs AUS, WTC 2025 Final—Pitch Report

Nasser Hussain and Stuart Broad shared their assessment of the Lord’s pitch:

“It is cloudy, but there’s a very slight chance of rain. The pitch will play really nicely—it looks like a nice surface, and it should be great to bat on Day 2. It's a big decision to make at the toss for the captains, given the cloud cover.”

The initial cloudiness makes bowling first a logical option, but batting conditions are expected to improve from Day 2 onward, creating an intriguing balance for the rest of the Test.

During their IPL 2025 match against SunRisers Hyderabad on Friday, May 2, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Shubman Gill's explosive innings for Gujarat Titans came to an end in controversial fashion. Gill was run out on the last ball of the 13th over, which led to significant debate about whether the run-out was legitimate. The run-out came at an important juncture of Gujarat's innings when Gill was well on his way to scoring a century.

It all started with Harshal Patel making an excellent throw to the striker's end, and Gill, who was well short of the crease. But subsequently, the big talking point was whether or not SRH wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen removed the bails with the ball in hand. While it was clear Gill was off his ground, the circumstances of how the bails were removed were not very clear. From some angles, it would appear that Klaasen removed the bails with his glove along the base of the stumps and not the ball. "Does he dislodge the bails with the ball or his gloves?"

TV umpire Michael Gough watched the same sequence of replays from multiple angles. One replay, for instance, showed Klaasen flicking the ball on towards the stumps at the same time the bails were being dislodged. However, the best angles showed no clear evidence to decide one way or another if the ball has made contact with the stumps and dislodged the bails. Despite this uncertainty, Gough ruled Gill out, which led to a visibly furious reaction from the GT captain, who later confronted the fourth official near the boundary line, demanding an explanation.

Gill’s Masterclass Cut Short

Before the controversial exit, Shubman Gill was batting phenomenally, showing class and timing for his 76 runs off just 38 balls; 10 fours and 2 sixes were struck, all with no risk taken. The talismanic opener had brought up his 50 in just 25 balls, exhibiting pleasing strokemaking and strong level-headedness. Gill firstly stitched an 87-run opening partnership with Sai Sudharsan, who offered a scintillating performance of his own with a rapid 48 off 23 balls, before passing on to his rapid 52-run partnership with Jos Buttler, all leaving Gujarat to target a 200-plus score.

The IPL’s match referee and governing council have not issued an official statement regarding the incident. It remains to be seen whether the matter will be addressed formally or dismissed as a judgment call. Either way, the controversy has added fuel to ongoing debates about umpiring standards in the world’s premier T20 league.

<![CDATA[Tanmay Srivastava: From Player to Umpire – A New Innings Begins!]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/tanmay-srivastava-from-player-to-umpire-a-new-innings-begins/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/tanmay-srivastava-from-player-to-umpire-a-new-innings-begins/ Wed, 19 Mar 2025 13:12:03 GMT

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has gone through many changes, but as the 2025 season approaches, Tanmay Srivastava has created a story that is unlike any other. A former cricket player who once featured for India in the 2008 U19 World Cup, where he played with Virat Kohli. Srivastava is now moving on and becoming an umpire.

From Promising Batter to IPL Umpire

From Talented Batter to IPL Umpire Tanmay Srivastava was a very talented left-handed batsman who made his mark in age-group cricket. He was also India’s highest run-scorer in the U19 World Cup, in which the team won the World Cup under Virat Kohli's captaincy. His performances opened up opportunities that he took in domestic cricket, and he also played in the IPL for teams such as Kings XI Punjab now Punjab Kings.

As talented as he was as a young player tho, Srivastava didn't get to live out his dreams of playing internationally, but he did have a nice domestic career playing for Uttar Pradesh and other teams in the Ranji Trophy until winding down his professional career in 2020.

Cricket has traditionally seen many players become coaches or commentators, but Srivastava’s move into umpiring is both rare and laudable. While one might think that being an umpire simply requires an understanding of cricket, it is much more involved. To be a successful umpire, a level of knowledge about the game is needed; the ability to quickly, confidently, and calmly make decisions must not only be supported by the understanding of the rules, but by experience playing at a high level.

Srivastava has shown it can be done and there is life beyond serving in a playing position a player can still impact the sport from many angles. Taking into account the IPL is synonymous with high-pressure moments, Srivastava will face a different type of challenge making real-time and accurate calls for the game, with the pressure on knowing many millions are watching a tall ask for anybody! If an indicator for success is based on his previous playing career, he has temperament and the necessary knowledge behind his decisions.

As IPL 2025 unfolds, all eyes will be on Tanmay Srivastava, not for his batting strokes but for his ability to make the right calls—this time, as an umpire.

Cricket tends to create interesting stories, and one of them is Tanmay Srivastava's. From being a bright young batman and a team-mate of Virat Kohli in India's triumphant 2008 U-19 World Cup team, Srivastava has today adopted a new role within the game umpiring in the IPL.

Srivastava was a very good cricketer in his younger days, topping the Indian run-scorer list in the 2008 U-19 World Cup. Though a few of his colleagues, such as Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, had extended international careers, Srivastava took a different route. Following years of domestic cricket, he retired in 2020 and turned his attention to umpiring.

His path to umpiring is a proof of his innate love for the game. Given his background in playing, Srivastava carries with himself useful experience into his new function, ensuring play fair on the ground. Here now, having entered the IPL in an official role, he has come the full circle of going from runs scored under lights to taking those fateful middle decisions.

Cricket does find such peculiar ways to keep its players in its folds, and Tanmay Srivastava's tale is yet another case of the unpredictable yet intriguing nature of the game.

1. ICC Selects Neutral umpires to avoid any controversies between nations.

2. India's top umpire, Nitin Menon withdrew due to personal reasons.

3 . Ongoing, Indian and Pakistan tensions.

4. Indian umpires refused to travel Pakistan.

5. ICC rotates official representation for fair game play.

But the official reasons still need to come.
