At the start of the second day of the second day-night Test of the Ashes 2025/26 at the Gabba in Brisbane, Marnus Labuschagne provided a fine one-handed catch to end the England innings with the dismissal of Jofra Archer. The batter pulled the short ball against Brendan Doggett as Labuschagne dived at the deep square leg region to grab the spectacular catch.

Later, in the evening, Will Jacks battered that catch with another spectacular grab to send back the Australia captain and their number four batter, Steve Smith. The right-handed batter was in top form in that contest and celebrated his half-century as Cameron Green was bowled at the start of the 56th over for 45 runs.

Three balls later, Brydon Carse put another short ball at Smith, who got cramped for room and looked to pull the ball behind the stumps. But Smith grabbed a spectacular one-handed catch at the backward square leg. He was in the air while attempting the catch and swung the game like a pendulum of a clock.

Earlier in the game, England posted a massive total of 334 runs on the board, which is the second-highest team score against Australia in the day-night pink-ball Test. Their opening batter, Zak Crawley, notched up 76 runs in 93 balls at a strike rate of 81.72 with the help of 11 boundaries, while Joe Root remained unbeaten on 138 runs with 15 fours and one six.

Jofra Archer smashed a fine knock of 38 runs at a strike rate of 105, shouldering on two boundaries and two sixes. Mitchell Starc picked up six wickets for 75 runs in 20 overs. Australia’s top five was excellent with the bat as all of Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Jake Weatherald celebrated their respective fifties.

Cameron Green smashed 45 runs while Alex Carey remained unbeaten on 46 runs. Australia made their way to 378/6 by the end of the second day as they had already collected a decent lead of 44 runs with the bat.

With the injury of premier pacer Mark Wood, the management of the England Test side has decided to pick the Mumbai Indians star, Will Jacks, for the second day-night Test of the Ashes 2025/26 at the Gabba in Brisbane, starting on November 04. It will be the spin all-rounder’s first red-ball appearance in three years after leapfrogging Shoaib Bashir as their main spinner.

It will be the third Test game for Will Jacks, having earned his first two in Pakistan in 2022, where he picked up 6/161 on his debut at the Rawalpindi ground. The 27-year-old was one of the multiple spinners on those two occasions, but now finds himself not just in an Ashes series with 1-0 down, but also as a primary spinner of the pink-ball affair.

Jacks featured in just five-class matches in the last two seasons, and picked up five wickets in the three County Championship 2025 games at an average of 38.80. If he gets a wicket at the Gabba, then it will be his 50th scalp in first-class cricket since his debut in 2018.

England include Will Jacks in second D/N Ashes 2025/26 Test at Gabba

Bashir became the first-choice spinner of Stokes’ side since the start of the 2024 summer, debuting in India earlier that year, but has been left out for the very first time regarding the choice of the spin options. He didn’t find himself in the 12-member side in the previous Perth Test as they opted for an all-pace attack.

“Talking about the tactical element of a day-night game, you do try to look at Australia. They play a lot of day-night cricket here, how they use their spinner as an attacking option, or more to give the bowlers an easier rotation and to get through the overs quicker to have more time with the new ball under lights.” Captain Ben Stokes expressed in the press conference.

Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith (wk), Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer.

The Rockets have been one of the most dependable teams this season, taking six wins in eight outings to grab second place and seal their playoff position. <![CDATA[4 Mega trades that could take place before IPL 2026 Auction]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/4-mega-trades-that-could-take-place-before-ipl-2026-auction/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-analysis/4-mega-trades-that-could-take-place-before-ipl-2026-auction/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 20:38:38 GMT

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 mini-auction is just a few months away, and trade rumours are already heating up. Big names like Sanju Samson, KL Rahul, and Ravichandran Ashwin are reportedly in the mix for possible moves. Although the new season will kick off next summer, franchises have begun analysing their squads, identifying weaknesses, and exploring ways to strengthen ahead of the auction. Discussions around player retention, releases, and strategic signings are already shaping the build-up to what promises to be another thrilling IPL season.

The league has witnessed major trade deals in the past, with Hardik Pandya’s return to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans for INR 15 crore ahead of IPL 2024 being one of the most notable. Pandya’s move came after he led the Titans to their maiden title in 2022, their debut season. As the auction approaches, similar blockbuster trades could be on the horizon. Here’s a look at four high-profile player moves that might take place before the IPL 2026 auction begins. Lets look some of the eye catching trade;

Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals to CSK)

Sanju Samson RR 2025

Reports indicate that Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Sanju Samson could be traded to Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who are looking for a successor to MS Dhoni. Samson offers leadership qualities and reliability as a wicketkeeper-batter. Potential trade options for CSK include Shivam Dube, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, or Ravichandran Ashwin to balance the deal.

Samson has been associated with RR since 2013, except for the 2016 and 2017 seasons when the franchise was banned. Over the years, he has become one of their most consistent performers and a key figure in their setup. He recently shared his experiences of playing for the Jaipur-based team.

Will Jacks (Mumbai Indians to Delhi Capitals)

Will Jacks MI 2025

England all-rounder Will Jacks had a below-par IPL 2025 with Mumbai Indians (MI), scoring only 233 runs and taking six wickets in 13 matches. This could see him on the move ahead of IPL 2026.

Delhi Capitals (DC) are a potential destination, with reports hinting they may trade Vipraj Nigam or Ashutosh Sharma. Jacks also plays for Pretoria Capitals in SA20, DC’s sister franchise, where he has scored 740 runs and taken 13 wickets in 27 matches.

KL Rahul (Delhi Capitals to KKR)

KL Rahul 2025

In a surprising development, wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul could be traded to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Delhi Capitals bought him for INR 14 crore, and he delivered a strong season with the bat.

Rahul scored 539 runs in 13 matches, including three fifties and a century. As per The Times of India, KKR view him as both a batting boost and a potential captain, with his good rapport with assistant coach Abhishek Nayar adding to the appeal.

Venkatesh Iyer (KKR to RCB)

Venkatesh Iyer KKR 2025

KKR bought Venkatesh Iyer for INR 23.75 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction, but he underperformed, scoring only 142 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 139.21, with just one fifty.

Reports suggest Venkatesh could be traded to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for Phil Salt, who scored 403 runs in 13 matches with four fifties. RCB head coach Andy Flower had earlier admitted they tried to sign Venkatesh in the IPL 2025 mega auction, engaging in a bidding war with KKR.

Oval Invincibles made a perfect start to their hunt for a third straight men’s Hundred title, beating London Spirit by six wickets at Lord’s. Spirit had a night to forget, bowled out for just 80 runs in 94 balls their second‑lowest score in the tournament’s history. Star batters David Warner and Kane Williamson, both making their Hundred debuts, could only manage 9 runs each. The rest of the batting line‑up also struggled as Invincibles’ bowlers took control.

Oval Invincibles thrash London Spirit in opening men’s Hundred match

Afghan star Rashid Khan, playing his first match for Invincibles, was the pick of the bowlers. He spun his way to brilliant figures of 3 wickets for just 11 runs. England all‑rounder Sam Curran was just as effective, taking 3 for 18 with clever slower balls that kept Spirit guessing.

Chasing only 81 to win, Invincibles never looked in trouble. Openers Will Jacks (24 from 24 balls) and Tawanda Muyeye (18 from 20) gave them a steady start. Both fell to left‑arm spinner Liam Dawson, who bowled well for Spirit, taking 2 for 9 in his 20 balls. Dan Worrall and Ashton Turner picked up a wicket each, but the game was already in Invincibles’ control. Even a fox running onto the field briefly could not hold up their march to victory.

The winning runs came with plenty of balls to spare, sealing an easy win for the defending champions. This was a clear statement from Invincibles that they mean business again this year, while Spirit will need to regroup quickly if they want to compete.

The Mumbai Indians have just dropped exciting news for their fans! Jonny Bairstow, a prominent cricketer who has been leading Yorkshire this year, announced on social media that he’ll be joining the Mumbai Indians for the remainder of the IPL season as a replacement for Will Jacks. The announcement, made on May 20, 2025, has sparked a wave of enthusiasm among fans, who are eager to see how this talented player will contribute to the team’s campaign. Bairstow shared his gratitude to Yorkshire for their support and expressed his excitement about returning to the IPL with Mumbai Indians.

In his heartfelt post, Bairstow reflected on the tough decision to leave Yorkshire mid-season, noting how much he’s enjoyed leading the club. However, the opportunity to play for Mumbai Indians, one of the IPL’s most successful franchises, was too good to pass up. The Mumbai Indians, known for their dynamic gameplay and passionate fanbase, have consistently been a dominant force in the IPL, and Bairstow’s addition is expected to bring fresh energy to the squad. His experience and leadership skills could prove vital as the team pushes through the latter stages of the tournament.

The announcement has already created a buzz on social media, with hashtags like #MumbaiIndians and #IPL trending among cricket enthusiasts. Bairstow’s post concluded with an enthusiastic message to Mumbai fans, saying he can’t wait to “get started and experience the energy of Mumbai.” His optimism is infectious, and fans are already counting down to his first match in the Mumbai Indians jersey.

Jonny Bairstow is in talks to join Mumbai Indians as a temporary replacement for Will Jacks, if the team makes it to the playoffs. Jacks has returned to India and is expected to play MI’s last two league matches, but he won’t be available for the playoffs due to England’s ODI series against West Indies, which clashes with the rescheduled knockout matches. According to Reports, Bairstow could step in for him, as long as he gets the required No-Objection Certificate (NOC).

Bairstow went unsold in last year’s auction and hasn’t played for England since June 2024. If everything goes as planned, he’ll fly to India after leading Yorkshire against Surrey in the County Championship this week. He would miss one Championship game and a couple of T20 Blast matches if he joins MI.

The experienced English batter has played 50 IPL games across five seasons, turning out for Sunrisers Hyderabad (2019-2021) and Punjab Kings (2022, 2024).
He has a great record, with an average of 34.54 and a strike rate of 144.45. He also has two IPL hundreds, including a memorable one during a record chase at Eden Gardens last season against KKR.

Will Jacks has been an important player for MI this season, featuring in 11 of their first 12 games.
He has scored 195 runs and taken five wickets with his off-spin. He was named Player of the Match in two key home wins against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants.

Mumbai Indians are currently in fourth place on the points table, with two league games left against Delhi Capitals on May 21 and Punjab Kings on May 26.
After a slow start to the season, they bounced back with six wins in a row, but lost narrowly to Gujarat Titans just before the tournament was paused due to tensions between India and Pakistan. MI could also lose Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch for the playoffs, as both have been picked in South Africa’s squad for the World Test Championship final next month.

In the match played between Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants in 45 match of IPL 2025, Hardik Pandya's platoon has won by 54 runs. With this, Mumbai has now reached the second position in the points table. This is Lucknow's fifth defeat this season. With which it now seems very difficult for Rishabh Pant's team to reach the playoffs. Let's take a look at today's match.

In the match, Mumbai Indians batted first and scored 215 runs in 20 overs. This included 58 runs from opener Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav's quick 54 runs. Apart from these two, Will Jacks 29 and Naman Dheer also played quick 25 runs. Due to which Mumbai's score crossed 200. In response, Lucknow's innings was limited to 161 runs. Ayush Badoni scored the highest 35 runs for Lucknow. While in Mumbai's bowling, Bolt took 3 and Bumrah took 4 wickets. These two bowlers of Mumbai had wrapped up more than half of Lucknow's innings. In this way Mumbai has won the match by 54 runs.

The journey of both the teams in this season

Now let's take a look at the performance of Mumbai and Lucknow in the current IPL season. In which such a performance is no less than a miracle for Mumbai. Because it won only 1 match out of its first 5 matches. After which it was believed that this season too the Mumbai franchise would not be able to reach the playoffs. But now this team is at second place in the points table with 6 wins and 4 losses in 10 matches.

On the other hand, the current IPL season has been full of ups and downs for Lucknow. The team loses one match and wins the other. Lucknow has currently played 10 matches in this season. In these, the team has won 5 matches while it has faced defeat in 5 matches. This is the reason why Rishabh Pant's team is currently at sixth position in the points table.
