The former Indian captain, Aakash Chopra, has shed light on the explanation of a hybrid pitch where it explained how the grounds men put five percent of the plastic grass on the turf which never allowed the turf to earn wear and tear on it. These surfaces were used at Edgbaston during the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025.

In India, this new innovative idea was granted last year at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium in Dharamshala. The hybrid surfaces was unveiled in the grand ceremony, in the presence of the IPL chairman, Arun Dhumal, and other cricket dignitaries including Paul Taylor, who was a former England player.

‘In Edgbaston, they say that there are fiber grasses which have been sowed on the surface, unlike the normal turf. They are sown into the ground. It sounds really strange. But there are several advantages of it, because the plastic grass doesn’t go anywhere. So, if you put 5% of it in the square, then there are hardly any wear and tear.” The former England opener, Aakash Chopra, revealed during a video on Instagram.

The hybrid pitches are a common factor in England with several grounds like Lord’s and Oval using them on several occasions. India look forward to grant it in Mumbai and Ahmedabad in the future. ICC has sanctioned them for the 50-over and shortest formats of the game, while there are plans to use them in county grounds.

The playing conditions expectedly vary in those surfaces. Most of these surfaces are batting friendly, with the new ball anticipating of offering some swing and seam movement off the air when it’s new. But once it gets old, it hardly helps the fast bowlers as the batters enjoy their time in the middle.

The former West Indies left-handed opening batter, Chris Gayle, was present during the season two of the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 in England, where their side didn’t do well and got knocked out of the group-stage after their defeat against India, who qualified into the semifinal clash, which later on was canceled against India due to political reasons.

Along with Gayle, there were several notable players of the Caribbean side, including Dwayne Smith, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, L Simmons, and others. Their batting wasn’t up to the mark in the three-week competition, even though Fidel Edwards breathed fire in a few games. But Gayle, the skipper of the side, looked forward to making a strong comeback for next season of WCL.

‘It’s a bit of mixed feelings, and I'm disappointed to get knocked out of the competition. But I must say the second season of WCL was fantastic and well put together. We did have a bad season, but we will learn from the mistakes and come back next season bigger and stronger. The fans were excited, especially the Indians, who support the West Indies, but they also want to see good cricket.’

‘From here, the memories of the Caribbean will be good to see the players we haven’t seen for a long time. Some of them have finished their career a bit too early. When asked whether he would want to spend some time in the middle or against his old teammates from the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Virat Kohli and Ab de Villiers, the southpaw had a smile and excitement on his face.

‘We (and Virat Kohli) had some great times on and off the field. It was great to share the same dressing room. Like I said, he is a phenomenal player and a legend of the game. He is still playing, which is good news. But we will miss him whenever he fully quits. The best moment will be to see me, AB de Villiers, and Virat sharing the ground in the future WCL.’ Gayle concluded.
