<![CDATA[Simon Doull picks India’s five most iconic T20 World Cup moments]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/simon-doull-picks-india-s-five-most-iconic-t20-world-cup-moments/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/simon-doull-picks-india-s-five-most-iconic-t20-world-cup-moments/ Mon, 26 Jan 2026 20:12:19 GMT

The New Zealand former cricketer Simon Doull has brought back to life for cricket fans the best T20 World Cup games in India history through his selection of five top matches which include exciting plays from matches and display intense emotions and show the players who made their mark on cricket history.

The upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 has made Doull's selections popular with fans because these selections show how India developed its T20 cricket style through key events which went beyond normal match results.

1. Virat Kohli’s “Shot of the Century” (2022 vs Pakistan)

The cricket world received its first shock when Doull selected this incident at a Melbourne Cricket Ground match. The Indian cricketer Virat Kohli executed an impossible shot by hitting a six over long-off against Haris Rauf during a critical India-Pakistan match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Kohli used his perfect timing and steady body control to execute a dangerous batting technique which allowed him to win the match by successfully hitting 160 runs. Doull considers this performance his top choice because he believes the player showed great bravery when he tried to perform this shot at that particular moment. The shot became an instant cricketing legend because it produced more than just a boundary.

2. Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes (2007 vs England)

T20 cricket evolution reached its highest point through this particular event. The 2007 Durban match witnessed Yuvraj Singh hit six consecutive sixes against Stuart Broad which created an enormous impact throughout international cricket.

The 36 runs which India scored during a single over surprised spectators because it established India as a dangerous team in a completely new cricket format. Doull ranks the moment high because it brought T20 cricket to the public and showed baseball enthusiasts a historic battle.

3. Virat Kohli’s Mohali masterclass (2016 vs Australia)

Kohli achieved his performance through a virtual knockout combined with a powerful Australian pace attack and heavy game pressure. His 82 runs without losing a wicket in 51 balls during the match at Mohali stands as one of the greatest T20 chases ever accomplished by an Indian cricketer.

Kohli used his batting technique to face Starc and Hazlewood and Cummins while he carried India to victory through his unbreakable mental strength. According to Doull the batting performance constitutes the perfect demonstration of batting skill which withstands difficult conditions during an essential match.

4. Suryakumar Yadav’s match-turning catch (2024 final vs South Africa)

Fielding moments have not earned recognition on lists of this nature but this particular moment required inclusion. Suryakumar Yadav completed an incredible boundary catch during the 2024 final which brought India full control of the match after the boundary catch.

Doull describes it as “athletic magic” - a moment that summed up India’s sharp fielding standards and played a crucial role in sealing their second T2O World Cup title.

5. Sreesanth’s catch to seal history (2007 final vs Pakistan)

The moment that started it all. Sreesanth caught a high-pressure catch during the final over of the first T20 World Cup final which resulted in Misbah-ul-Haq's dismissal. The catch won the game for India while it created the Indian T20 legacy which brought home the first world championship in the T20 format.

Doull creates a list which combines nostalgic elements with current information to showcase exceptional skills and the key events which changed game results and tournament outcomes and established Indian T20 cricket identity. The five moments which exist in Indian cricket history will remain permanent despite different discussions regarding player rankings.

The entire cricket community was astonished when the news of Yuvraj Singh's cancer broke out. How he overcame the life-threatening situation and got back into international cricket again is, to date, a testimonial for sports fraternities.

During a recent conversation with former England batter Kevin Pietersen, Yuvraj Singh reveals that he had only three to six months to live. He was on the verge of leaving cricket as doctors explained how dangerous the tumor had grown. Singh had to choose only one between cricket and his life—a do-or-die situation in real life. But he refused to leave Cricket. In disbelief, Pietersen uttered 'Jesus' when the former India batter said that he had only three to six months left.

Singh and his family had to decide what to do to get back to a normal life. They went to the USA for treatment; after that, what happened is inspiring. Yuvraj Singh, who hit 6 sixes in an over against Stuart Broad, made a comeback for team India in international cricket.

Yuvraj said, "I wanted to go on the Australia tour because I was just starting to find a place in Test cricket. I didn't want to retire, and I've been waiting for this (test debut) for seven years. I spoke to the doctor. He said, 'You only have three to six months to live.' Now, it's up to you to decide whether you want to play cricket or get treatment."

Yuvraj Singh further explained, "The tumor was between my lungs and heart and was compressing the heart's arteries. So the doctors said that if I didn't get chemotherapy, I could have a heart attack. And then they sent me for treatment."

He added, "I still remember the doctor's words when I entered the hospital. All my tests were done. He said, 'You will come out as someone who never had cancer.' Those were the first words of encouragement from the doctor."

Yuvraj Singh's first international match after battling cancer was an emotional T20I against New Zealand in Chennai in September 2012, where he scored 34 runs off 26 balls and took a catch as well.

KL Rahul: 18 balls vs Scotland (Dubai 2021)

It was the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 second round group stage match, where India faced Scotland in the crucial encounter. While Scotland were bundled out for only 85 runs, Indian opener KL Rahul slammed an 18-ball 50 with the help of six fours and three sixes, as India chased down the paltry target in just 6.3 overs after losing two wickets.

Abhishek Sharma: 17 balls vs England (Mumbai 2025)

Hardik Pandya: 16 balls vs South Africa (Ahmedabad 2025)

It was the last game of the five-match T20I series between India and South Africa at Ahmedabad, where India were leading by 2-1. Coming to bat at no.5 in the 13th over, Hardik Pandya started with a six, which was just an example of what would happen in that innings. With the help of four fours and five sixes, Hardik completed his half-century in just 16 balls to record India's second-fastest T20I half-century.

Yuvraj Singh: 12 balls vs England (Durban 2007)

It was the key Super Eight fixture in the inaugural ICC World T20 (2007), where India and England faced each other. While India batted first, both openers Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag provided a powerful start with their half-centuries, but Yuvraj Singh was the show. The left-handed middle-order batter slammed six sixes in an over to English pacer Stuart Broad, and the last six of that over was Yuvraj's completion of the historic 50 runs in just 12 balls. Now, it is the second fastest half-century in T20I history, behind Nepal cricketer Dipendra Singh Airee's 9-ball 50 against Mongolia during the 2023 Asian Games.

Abhishek Sharma, the left-handed explosive opening batter of the Indian cricket team, activated his explosive batting against Bengal during the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025/26 season at the Gymkhana Ground in Hyderabad. The opposition side was led by the veteran Indian pacer, Mohammad Shami, but that hardly mattered to Abhishek.

The southpaw batter smashed his half-century in just 12 deliveries, which equaled the record of his mentor, Yuvraj Singh, when he got to that landmark against England at Kingsmead in Durban during the 2007 T20 World Cup. Later, he went on to register the joint fastest T20 century by an Indian by 32 deliveries.

Abhishek Sharma ended with 148 runs in just 52 deliveries at a strike rate of 284.62 with the help of eight boundaries and 16 sixes. This becomes the second top score in T20 cricket among the Indian batters. Sharma went past Shreyas Iyer’s 147 against Sikkim, while Tilak Verma stays at the top with his fabulous knock of 151 against Meghalaya.

The left-handed batter has now smashed 91 sixes, which is the most by an Indian player in a calendar year. His 16 sixes in that innings are the second most in a T20 innings by an Indian player. He has scored 128 runs, which is the second-most T20 runs scored in boundaries in an innings by an Indian.

Abhishek has now smashed eight centuries in the T20 cricket, which is equaled with the former World Cup-winning captain and the opening batter of India’s shortest format, Rohit Sharma. He stays only behind Virat Kohli, who has accumulated nine centuries in his T20 career. Apart from Abhishek, Punjab’s wicket-keeper batter, Prabhsimran Singh, has dashed 70 runs in 35 balls at a strike rate of 200 with the help of eight fours and four sixes.

Punjab ended with 310 runs as they became the second T20 team after Baroda to record a 300-plus score. It’s only the fifth team overall to achieve the feat in all men’s T20 cricket.
